    Maggie's violent behaviour is attention seeking. Homer and the kids frequently forget her existence and Marge treats her more like a doll than anything else. All the intelligent stuff she does, it's always ignored by the adults. Even when she shoots Mr Burns or attacks Homer with mallet, within a few minutes she's back to being ignored.
    Most likely, as she gets older, she's going to try harder and harder to get attention. Just like Bart (who acts out because punishment is a form of attention) and Lisa (who hopes that she'll be noticed if she becomes famous).
    Of course the roles of 'the smart one' and 'the fun one' are already filled- so if Maggie wants attention she's going to have to find another way to get it and, judging by how she's going so far, violence might be it. I wouldn't be too surprised if, in a few years, Maggie buys a gun of her own, deciding that if her family won't love her, perhaps they'll fear her instead.
    When you look at it, Marge and Homer are awful parents.

    • @alexturlais8558

    I'm surprised they didn't go a step further with the Id, Ego, Super Ego theory and state that Bart, Lisa, Marge, and Maggie aren't real and are, instead, mental representations of Homer's mind. Bart is his Id and represents Homer himself as a child being raced by Abe. Lisa is his Ego and his everything Homer could have been had his mother never left and kept a firm hand on him. Marge is the Super Ego, the desire Homer has to just fit in but knowing he never can. And Maggie is his inner child, representing his potential.

      Michael Swaim thanks for all that you guys do. I'm a fan of the show and I only wish you all could do more. I have a pitch for you: tie all the 90s-00s black movies together. I can help if you'd like. It's pretty easy because some of the same directors and actors were sort of type-casted for much of that time period. Some crazy funny theories could come of it. Like, what if Bishop from juice survived and moved to the west coast to get his life together and became a mail carrier.

    Just to recap, the theories are:
    • When Steamboat Itchy was made, it changed media to be hyper violent going forward
    • Springfield is a bunch of clones
    • The Simpsons themselves are Freudian
    • Uhhh.... All the kids are geniuses but the parents are terrible?

  • @user-ig4dl4iv1j
    @user-ig4dl4iv1j 8 лет назад +160

    I prefer the Marxist interpretation of the Simpson family to the Freudian one; Homer and Marge represent the reproduction of bourgeois ideology among the proletariat, (in Homer's case alcoholism and apathy, in Marge's case moral puritanism and social conservatism) Bart and Lisa represent a proletarian class-consciousness that is still teathered within the confines of the bourgeois socio-political order (Bart's anarchism, Lisa's liberalism) and Maggie represents the latent revolutionary potential of the proletariat. (Hence why she shot Mr. Burns, Springfield's embodiment of the bourgeoisie)

    while I do find 99% of this video to be plausible, insightful and funny as hell, I have to point out one of the first things mentioned. In the "Space Coyote" episode, Homer promises not to drink. You guys say that he does, but after watching the episode dozens of times over the years, its clear that he upholds his promise to Marge. He almost has some beer while trying to wash down the pepper, but nope. He DOES NOT DRINK in that episode. Shame on you, calling yourself Simpsons fans and getting trivial details wrong. SHAME!

    • @OmegaGamer1989
      @OmegaGamer1989 2 года назад +12

      Also, they say that Homer breaks his promise and catches the fish, but that's wrong also. He goes out to take a walk, and through no fault of his own, ends up getting dragged into a boat with a fishing pole that the first had just bit on. He had no choice in the matter. And he he couldn't just let the pole go, either, because he had no oars and no way to row back to shore, so holding on to the fish and hoping it dragged him back closer to shore was his best bet.
      There are plenty of other times when Marge DOES have good reason to leave Homer, but she never does. And the only times when she DOES come close to leaving him, are the times when he hasn't actually done anything wrong!

    You know what my Theory is? While Homer is an idiot in almost every category . . he is a musical genius.
    think about it. He won a Grammy while in his band the B-Sharps, which he WROTE songs for, He wrote that song about hating Ned Flanders which was on top of the charts for awhile and had several spinoffs (the least of which being William Shatners cover of it), And when Lisa auditioned for sort of a child American Idol singing contest Homer acted as her agent and wrote a song for her to sing in her first act in less then a minute, and continued to write songs for her which took her to the finals.
    Homer could have easily settled for a career as a Musician and left his Power Plant job, but since the premise of "Idiot in the most dangerous job possible" is comedic gold of course it never happened.

      +TomboTime thats Because homer is a genus he just has a crayon up his nose somehow disabling part of his brain. (ep 257, s12, 2001) where do you think the kids get it from? problem is he shoved it back in because Lisa was jealous.... Lisa is completely self centered..
      who knows if he secretly takes it out to do things like writing music or anything else.

    • @TomboTime
      @TomboTime 8 лет назад +15

      It's been a while since I've seen that episode, but i thought Homer put the crayon back in because he was outlasted by the rest of the stupid town? Also I'm pretty sure lisa didn't ask him to put it back in, in fact she was scared when she realized one of the crayons in her box was missing.

      +DarkShadowsX5 Actually he put it back in because he was losing friends from being too smart, he annoyed them when he corrected what they said. Also in one of the newer episodes (say what you will) Carl (Karl?) is revealed to have an iq over 200. I believe it is the Google glass episode. Back on topic though that episode you are referring to has a terrible message, be smart, or have friends and that is not something you want to teach kids.

      However, since then we have further evidence that episode happened. We have never seen Fit Fat Tony lay flowers at his deceased wife's grave on Sunday or Michael, his son. We do however see a playboy Tony who hooks up with Selma, Fat Tony would never have slept around as he cares too much for his wife.

    I always thought the reason everyone acts and sometimes looks the same is because Bart not only missed his dad, but imagines how he would have reacted to today's world. Way back in season 4 " Homer's triple bypass", Homer has a series of heart attacks and they went to Dr. Nick for the operation where he dies on the table. Bart becomes so upset with the loss that he creates a world were the smartest person he knows could have done a better job. This is why here after, Lisa is allowed to do incredible feats such as to perform the operation and save there dad. First Dr. Nick appears to tell the family Homer died, but in Bart's mind Lisa comes from behind to say it was a success. This could be like the ending of Rosanne where she is writing a book about her family where Dan didn't die. The entire show could be Bart's memoirs about his family for a book he writes while he is a Supreme Court judge. This why the Simpsons keep predicting the future because for Bart... it all has already happened.

    Something to support "Bart is actually smart" is an episode (i can't remember which) where it's learned that all MALE Simpsons and male Simpsons only, go through a kind of neural degradation as they age. Before Lisa learns that it only affects male Simpsons, she begins to worry that she's going through that process. she rifles through some of Bart's homework of when he was younger and learns that he was a straight "A" student until he was affected by whatever it is that causes Simpsons men to decrease in intelligence around the age of 8

    All these points actually make sense if you consider the Simpson's coma theory. It's the one that suggests that everything from the episode "So It's Come to This" has been taking place inside Homer's head, as he's in a coma. The episode's a clip show, which I assume is why they didn't mention it - however, it does explain a lot of things. Springfield is so violent because Homer himself loves violence (we've seen how much he laughs at itchy and scratchy), marge always forgives him because in his mind he doesn't understand that he's done anything truly wrong. And Bart, Lisa and Marge become the id, ego, and superego of his own subconscious. It also explains why no-one really ages, or why most characters can't seem to die

    I honestly believe you guys are better, more insightful and more intelligent pop culture commentators than just about anyone. You do a really good job of pointing out thought provoking elements while also being highly amusing. Also, you somehow manage to bring up issues pertaining to (gasp!) social justice without incurring the wrath of all those people who seem to think that suggesting the world isn't always an entirely fair place all the time is tantamount to calling for the death penalty for everyone who has testicles or relatively low melanin levels. Wow, that sentence kind of dragged on, sorry.
    Anyway! Some of your points are more flippant than others, obviously, but that's cool, you don't want to start taking yourselves too seriously. Keep up the good work!

    Two things I caught: 1) one of the patches Bart sewed onto his Boy Scout uniform (Junior Camper uniform, technically) was for Patch Forgery, so I think it's safe to say he didn't earn ALL of them, and 2) that bit about Homer drinking after promising not to left out the part about being goaded into eating a dangerously hot pepper and searching desperately for any liquid to cool his tongue with. And hell, he still didn't actually drink any of that beer because Marge distracted him and he didn't even get any in his mouth. Also, even though Marge was mad at him for that, that episode was actually about Homer thinking about leaving HER because he started to feel like she didn't understand him, so her proving herself to him at the end isn't as backwards as they said. Not to say Marge isn't an enabler, though, because wow is she an enabler.

    5. Homer is blissful ignorance: not conncered with itself or given outcome
    6. Maggie is creativity: her portrayal as a problem solving, intuitive and artistic capabilitiy she is the intuitive/creative self
    7. Itchy and Scratchy are violence: self explanatory
    8. Canon deaths represent forgiveness: recurring tropes to preserve the living
    9. Sringfield is the chaos: wild things occur frequently
    10. Peace only happens when the selves cooperate against outside forces (2 to 6 suffice dependant on sitation/chaos element)

    Homer does not drink beer in the Johnny Cash/Desert coyote/"The Mysterious Voyage Of Homer" episode. He almost drinks beer because the chili is too spicy and he grabs the nearest drinks (after trying to use an ice cream cone) but at no point does he drink beer. The reason for his hallucination is the pepper (anyway I've never hallucinated because of alcohol...meh...well, not directly anyway lol).

    *1)*: Episode from last night: Lisa saving a raccoon and says it was her first true kiss. Nelson is present and played for laughs as either an insignificant mistake in Lisa's past or secretly pining for her (which would make him on par with Milhouse).
    *2)*: Bart learns Spanish during a flight to Brazil. This is impressive in itself, but when Lisa points out that in Brazil they speak Portuguese, he bashes his head and says "all gone". What kind of superpowers does he have to turn on and off his intellect? Almost like he can adjust it to allow only for relevant data to work at full capacity.
    *3)*: The episode "Bart The Genius" sort of pissed me off. Bart switches the test with Martin and Bart gets send to a school for gifted children. Yet when it's revealed he's not a genius Martin is not only not sent instead to the same school, but he's kept in the same class as Bart. He doesn't even get to skip a class or something.
    *4)*: Freud isn't considered bullshit by today's psychiatrists/psychologists. In fact some years ago I spoke to a psychology student regarding the curriculum and I've been told that Freud is the basis of modern psychology, while C.G. Jung is practically not taught at all. This was in Sweden, but I think the curriculum is similar throughout the Western World and if you want to become a Jungian psychoanalyst you have to go through a different program.

      1) While I do agree with you, not being open to any argument presenting a different viewpoint, is somewhat counter productive.
      2) It was kind of inevitable. Either a) you keep writing the same plot lines, and stick to what you know, and the show eventually goes stale. or b) you keep trying something different, like new plot lines and how to use characters, and people complain about how different it is.
      Eventually, with the show going on this long, it is inevitable that one of the two will happen.

      The Gentleman Probably would have been best if they just stopped the show at a high point, its sadly something that many succesfull shows won't do. Most jump the shark at some point.

    Homer didn't get drunk! He ate chilli that made him have pretty much an acid trip
    Not drunk. He got the beer to sooth the chilli and didn't drink it when Margie caught him.
    No drunk, just bad timing

    There's a blurry line between fan theories and just talking about what's already there.. so then it's not a theory it's just observations. This is a huge pet peeve of mine.

      It's like those revenge stories that just involve someone filling out a complaint form when someone is unprofessional and then hearing back that a couple of other people also filled out complaint forms and the person was fired
      It's not revenge in the slightest, just civic duty.
