    People forget if this released before Crash or Mario 64 I reckon people would have still been quite impressed with it. I mean imagine if this were late 1995 and 3d being experimented those days, it probably would have been looked at somewhat fondly at the time.

      Honestly, even if it did I still don't think it'd even compare to something like Jumping Flash.Even then, once those games did come back X-treme would still look bad by comparison.Sonic games don't exactly have a short shelf life after all.
      Honestly, everything I've ever seen of Xtreme looks more like a tech demo of the Saturn's hardware capabilities than something you'd ever want to actually play.

      @@jeffreywilliams1347Sonic X-treme never progressed past the tech demo state. They were not able to get the levels to run on Sega Saturn.
      There are actual level layouts drawn by Sonic 2's level designer and they are available online. But they were not implemented and its unclear if those levels can even run on Sega Saturn

    • @MB-cb2he
      @MB-cb2he 4 месяца назад

      Yes, the revealed footage of Sonic X-treme was just tech demo footage. They had difficulty even getting Sonic to move on Saturn.
      There are also only a few fully drawn level layouts. Practically no progress was made with Sonic X-treme development other than graphics (which may of changed anyway)

    10:07 Actually, the creator has moved on to creating an FPS Shooter for the Saturn since Z-Treme was met with a lot of unfounded criticism and he's not much of a Sonic fan. It's unclear if he'll return to the project.

      @@That_Guy- It wasn't the dev's fault, Bernie Stolar never asked Naka permission before he gave it to them. Then the one who was doing all the work on the project got extremely sick and couldn't finish it. IMHO they should have made Naka and Sonic Team do a 3D Sonic game first and have it ready by 1996 at the latest. Letting them do Nights Into Dreams left the Saturn without a 3D Sonic platformer for its entire lifespan. Alternatively, they could have had Traveler's Tales do a fully 3D Sonic platformer instead of Sonic Blast and Sonic R. They managed to achieve polygon transparencies and good graphics with Sonic R, it's just too bad all that effort went into a racing game instead of a platformer.

    • @overwatch761
      @overwatch761 4 года назад +24

      It's hard to know. Nights has a very short draw distance. 3D worlds weren't a good fit for Saturn. A 2D Sonic with fancier graphics would've done the trick. Or perhaps the Crash style of bendy corridors to hide draw distance and reduce load on system.

    Fact Check: The Sonic X-Treme Boss Engine was *not* based on NiGHTS.
    Chris Coffin the coder has refuted such claims fully. It was mostly using tools created from Panzer Dragoon II - which Sonic Team also used for NiGHTS.
    The full time window from when STI saw the NiGHTS engine code, to when executives ordered them to erase all copies (at the demands of Yuji Naka) was less than a week.
    Some of this confusion comes from Christmas NiGHTS having a Sonic mode Easter Egg, which was mostly an internal snub by Naka to his former STI teammates, that Sonic Team was well ahead of where they were (to the detriment of course of Sega itself).

    It's a real shame they Sega made no real effort into bringing out a decent Sonic game like this to the Saturn. It may have helped improve sales for the console. When both Saturn and Playstation were launched I went to my local "video shop" and rented both consoles before I decided which one to buy. This was before Sony released any serious 3D games and I actually preferred the Saturn at the time. I bought Saturn in January 1996. I still have that console in storage today. Just a few more great games could have saved Sega. What a waste.

    • @neobogard
      @neobogard 4 года назад +2

      The real reason why Sonic Xtreme game was never released for the Saturn was because at that point of time Sonic was the main rival for Mario and any Sonic game they released had to live up to the quality of the Mario game on the rival console which at the time Sega wasn't able to do. Sega just didn't have the time and resources to come up with a Sonic game that rivalled Mario 64.

    • @Klonoahedgehog

      Sega of America really didn't care about the Saturn at all. A lot of its big killer apps stayed Japan exclusive.

    • @neobogard
      @neobogard 4 года назад +1

      @@Klonoahedgehog It's not that Sega of America didn't care, It's just that Sega of Japan design the Saturn as a console to mainly fit the Arcade scenes at the time to emphasise on fighters and Shooters with great 2D capabilities and which Sega of America didn't want much to do with.
      So what we ended up with was a console which Sega of America wasn't interested in what the console was designed for which resulted in a console that consisted mostly of terrible games which Sega of America thought was the right way to go because they were either digitised or in 3D despite it being a pile of crap.

    • @Zaphod-ef9yz
      @Zaphod-ef9yz 4 года назад +1

      @@neobogard There was a lot that the Saturn was capable of that was never realised due to lack of development support to third parties too as I understand it. Some of it's best 3D stuff features many work arounds.
      You raise a good point though about the arcades. Saturn was quite the "2D Powerhouse" it has been said. I can't speak for Japan at the time but this came at a time arcades were dying off. I don't think the shoddy port of arcade flagship Virtua Fighter 1 helped either in that respect.

    • @THENAMEISQUICKMAN
      @THENAMEISQUICKMAN 3 года назад

      It also doesn't help how much Sega of Japan were screwing around Sega of America during the Saturn era. Sonic was much more successful in the west than the east, so Sonic took a backseat. Sega of Japan basically sacrificed every bit of goodwill they had with fans just so they could finally beat Nintendo in their home country. Which they did, as the Saturn outsold the N64 there. Too bad it cost them everything else.

    Evidently there are also builds of the game for PC, as (oversimplification incoming) evidently that was the manner in which it was developed.

    and then get a red sonic costume so i could literally call you redhotsonic.

    You didn't cover all of the builds for Sonic X-Treme - there is one build that is more complete, but it WON'T work on Saturn as it is a PC build. It's a more complete version of the second build and you should DEFINITELY check it out - there is a video of gameplay of it on RUclips - it has ACTUAL levels with interactability.
    I have a Phoebe so I knew about the other 3 betas working on real hardware, but I had NO idea that Z-Treme would work and that's FANTASTIC news! Thanks for that.
    -Anyhow do a follow up video on the PC build of the beta.

      "You didn't cover all of the builds for Sonic X-Treme - there is one build that is more complete, but it WON'T work on Saturn as it is a PC build." - Well, that answers your question to as why I didn't cover it; as it's on PC. I am aware of there being more on PC. May cover them on my secondary channel as a live stream soon.

    its impressive how the z-treme one runs on the real sega saturn, considering its has full 3D models and, well, its the saturn! kind of showcase that we could had a 3D sonic main title before the dreamcast, if sega was a little less sega >:T

    I love Saturn, its great for 2D but these just prove the Saturn could never have made full scale 3D Sonic adventure. These are tiny 3D spaces, much like the hub in Sonic Jam.

      Bug! and Bug Too! would like to have a word with you...
      EDIT: To be fair though, these games used narrow 3D paths and there was no free movement (although Bug Too! actually has some semi-open spaces to run around, mainly hub worlds and some parts of the levels)
