    Owned my Grenadier for about a month. I live in a rural area and tell people it’s like driving a well built, well equipped tractor with highway gears. Time and long term reliability will decide if it’s worth the price and the unique quirks.

    In Australia you can select a “permanent off” setting for the speed alarm. I’ve owned mine since early November 2023 and I’m very happy with the decision to buy a grenadier. If you’re parting with your cash I recommend going for the two tone leather heated seats. It makes the car feel luxurious given you’re spending a fair bit of coin anyway. Seat covers are the solution for when you are heading towards red dust😂 BTW it’s a very comfortable car for driving long distances in a day both on or off road.

    I pulled my GX550 order and picked up an available Trialmaster Grenadier a couple months ago. So far it has been a great decision!
    After having off-roaded and owned many Jeeps, Land Cruisers, 4Runners, FJ's and GX's, (and a Patrol GU & LC 105 in Australia), I feel like the Grenadier is a combo of some of the best off roaders and a great alternative to not having the 70 Series Toyota Land Cruisers here in the states.
    The aftermarket is really taking off with the Grenadier as well. Some of the niggles mentioned in the reviews about the speed warning or steering feel have validity, but honestly after 2 months of ownership you get used to the work arounds and driving experience. I have no reservations about ownership so far and highly encourage folks to take a test drive.

    I agree with Roman, on multiple accounts. Nice coach buses are super comfortable, they have air ride and just float down the road. And I think more first owners of the grenadier are going to have them off road a lot sooner than first owners of the GX. I think stock for stock the GX Overtrail may be more capable, but I think the compromises in amenities in the Grenadier means that people who buy them are going to be more task focused on off-roading and overlanding.

  • @RJ-vc2ju
    @RJ-vc2ju 2 месяца назад +13

    Roman has a great point in this video regarding the "mindset" that a vehicle puts you in - quite an insightful statement, and absolutely true. For most people presented with both the Grenadier and the GX550 and asked to pick one for primarily overland use would likely feel less worried, apprehensive, concerned, about damaging the vehicle if they went with the Grenadier. You can do the test yourself by imagining how you would classify a scratch on the Grenadier vs the GX550. On the Grenadier, most people may think of it as a scar and adding character, and on a GX550, it would likely be viewed as damage to be repaired.
    Now this is only if you're going to cross-shop the vehicles, which most people won't. If Toyota brought in the 70-series wagon, then for sure the GXL version would be cross-shopped with the Grenadier, but the 70 series would never be cross-shopped with the GX550.

      @@Gemini_0815 It would be so nice if people would read and understand comments prior to responding. They're comparable only in the mindset of the drivers. Someone purchasing either a LC70 Wagon GXL or a Grenadier would, in their mindset created by those vehicles, be much more open to tolerating visible wear and tear on their brand new vehicle, than someone driving off the lot in their brand new GX550 Overland. Of course, there are exceptions and people with significant financial resources that feel ok trashing everything they own...

      A 70 series is a 40 year old vehicle. Its design is from the late 1970s! To compare this to a LC 70 shows that you have absolutely zero technical insight in these cars. Everything about the grenadier is modern tech. The transmission, the engine, the suspension, the body, the chassis… Everything. In contrast, almost everything on the J7 is 40 years old. The engine and transmission are about the most modern component, but even those are not even close to the Grenadiers powertrain. The J7 Body has corrosion protection which lasts 1 year before visible corrosion starts. Come on people. Be realistic.

    On the Lexus, they’re all going to come in that same price range - they will have a ton of posh features the Grenadier doesn’t have, but Grenadier owners are paying for the frame and the axles and and the overbuilt connectors etc. Most GX 550’s are not going to be Overtrails, and most of them will never touch a dirt road. It’s not a knock on capability- it’s just a reality of how most will be used, the price of most of them, and the features that will attract a certain kind of buyer.

    Nice editing. Nice extra bits of interest to see other than just dirt on the trail. Said a lot about the IG in other videos, so, won't recap again. Roman, you had me with the honest reveal that On-X Off Road trail rating is tainted. Moab rating that trail lower is a more accurate opinion (if there is such a thing) than what On X gave it. I maintain, we need specificities to how these rating criteria come about. A lot of articulations, deep holes, terrain/soil is loose, muddy, etc. I 100% agree with the fact that there are a LOT of vehicles that would have smoothed that trip out big time. The IG is better suited for short difficult trips. Where you need the lockers. The trail you were on, obviously all 3 of you were bobbing around like bobble heads. I won't even go into all the different vehicles that would have been more compliant for that trip.(not the point here I know) Roman, I agree with your opinion about the d/c sway bar would have helped that situation. Anything else than Toyota like reliability will make this an unsustainable ownership experience. The first recall will be very telling. Equipping a grenadier for over landing will be amazingly expensive vs equipping a 4Runner.

    I do not take Lexus seriously as an off road overlanding rig what so ever. For the same reasons as you mentioned. Not because they are precious because I personally think they are over priced rubbish. But because they seem as though they are just putting a few accessories on their suvs and calling them off roaders. I also think the screen and ridiculous gear select computer looking joystick in the Enios is disappointing

      I actually think he’s right - all the money on the Grenadier is in stuff like the frame, axles, etc. Everything is really stripped down. You wipe it off or hose it out - even the paint is easy to spot fill - don’t have to take it down to metal. Trail pinstripes are a badge on honor, not a defect. Even at a lower price for the GX Overtrail, I think most of those owners will sweat the small stuff (no matter how hard they pretend, they’ll always have that Lexus badge in front). And most of the GX 550 owners will probably be picking trims or packages that put it equal to or above a Grenadier.

    No.there are not enough body options, the landcruiser and proper Defender are better, they need to have a chassis cab option, single and double, in rhd with the wheel on the proper side, there is a big hump, which from what I've seen on RUclips can be uncomfortable on long journeys,
