This is one of the most British songs i know. Such an awesome band.
Another Brick In The Wall and Holding Back The Years are dripping with Britishness too. It's all so wonderful.
@@prestigeworldwide5239 And the Verve with bitter sweet symphony.
Exactly why we love it!🥰
And of course Never gonna give you up by Rick Astley, Mel & Kim and so much more.
No need for Cliff Richard though
@@Delphiwizard I'm not talking about well known British songs. There is a very long list of those. I am talking about songs that are quintessentially British. I guess it is a subjective opinion at the end of the day.
I'm pretty sure every British person is born knowing this song.
Also germans, you know we prefer british Music to american
Like Films and books
@@Miristzuheiss Most Americans know it. Most popular British Music is a take on early American blues.
@@normitos Madness.... blues... nah mate, ska mate... big burly Jamaican black men coming over to London and bringing their music with them. One Step Beyond is literally a cover of a Prince Buster song.
To be fair most kids of today were conceived to Madness
Members of Madness are like human gremlins. They multiply if they touch water. Never feed Madness after midnight.
Gizmo doesn't eat after midnight.
Hahahahaha
and they wear baggy trousers
Oh man now I need to recommend Gremlins for his movie reactions!
🤣🤣🤣🤣💯
There are 7 members in Madness.. Suggs (vocals), Carl “Chas Smash” Smyth (backing vocals, dancing, and Father in this video), Lee “Kix” Thompson (sax and Mother), Mark “Bedders” Bedford (bass guitar), Chris “Chrissy Boy” Foreman (guitar), Mike “Barso” Barson (piano/keyboards), and Dan “Woody” Woodgate (drums).
“Our mum she’s so house proud, nothing ever slows her down. And a mess is not allowed” such genuine respect for their mum, precious! I ❤️ Madness!! Thank you for more Madness and a fabulous reaction as always! Much ❤️
1. There are seven members of Madness. 2. They are not a parody act, but serious musicians who just don't take life too seriously. 3. House of Fun, Night Boat to Cairo, and Shut Up next please.
Great choices and all you have to do is watch a live version of any track and you'll see just how good they are as musicians !!
Lovestruck
Yeah, NBTC is brilliant.
@@Islendingar I'm lucky enough to have seen them live around the time Oui, oui, Si si, Ya ya, Da da was released. They were faultless.
Serious - Is not something I associate with madness - Just having as much fun as one can that is what i associate with madness
Madness were a big part off my youth..they were called a ska band at the time...it was a big movement in the late 70s early 80s ..great times real bands real music and musicians....the selector,,the specials..there was so many at the time...YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO THE SPECIALS...THERE EXCELLENT...LOVE YOUR WORK PAL..💚🙂
Specials would be peng
Rat Race and Ghost Town are brilliant
Ghost Town, definitely! He liked Shawn of the Dead.
If its The Specials then the live video of skinhead moonstomp / enjoy yourself
The 90s had a pretty good ska resurgence for a bit, it had a punk influence that added a different dynamic that worked well
This One Was A HUGE Hit When It Dropped,, BIG COUNTRY "IN A BIG COUNTRY"...TRUTH!!
I love that song!!!!
Madness are a UK national treasure and sherished ❤️
incorrect. madness are a planetary treasure
@@dylanotto1675 😉
Fun fact: the song was all finished, mixed and produced, but when presented to the record label executives they felt it needed a chorus. Madness went back into the studio came up with and recorded the “our house, in the middle of our street” bit, which became the chorus and was spliced into the original song.
Listen carefully. Slightly different tempo, but imagine a) being able to just come up with it and b) the song without that bit in it!
It’s brilliant!
I have never heard that and it certainly wouldn't have been either a single or a finished song without the chorus. Have you a source?
If so, what can I say? Sometimes record execs get it right!
Thanks, Daniel; that is a genuinely fun (and QI) fact.
Your really the best for making people happy.
I agree!
I agree, and I love hanging out with this dude.
You can tell he is real and funny.
💯
Even his frustration of the internet makes me happy in a weird way because he's all of use. Why the hell does my internet go out at the worst times? I don't know. That's a question wiser men than me can only answer.
"The kids are playing up down stairs" words to live by...
💯💯💯💯💯❣️🎶
Wings of a Dove by Madness- a fun and upbeat tune, You won't be able to resist that "ooh-oh ohh-oh" bit!😆
This beat is FIRE. Was one of my favorites as a kid, a gem from the UK's New Wave.
You’re gonna sing that chorus for days now. We’re not sorry. 😁
This was my sister's favorite song. Our house used to be in the middle of a field after the houses surrounding us were demolished. She sang this song all the time.🙄
That's adorable!
House of Fun and Must be Love are iconic Madness songs. House of Fun is a boys coming of age song. Must be love has to be one of the top wedding songs of the 80s. BTW boys didn't dance until Madness came out.... They have a lot to answer for 😁
They played this on the roof of Buckingham Palace a number of years ago with the Jubilee. Must have blown their minds performing up there.
When they played on the roof of Buckingham Palace, one of my friends joked that if you had told Madness about that in the early 1980s, they would have responded "Will that be before or after the revolution?"
As a teen in the early 80s this song always spoke to me as a working middle class anthem, british yet worldly. Fun song. Growing up, I related to it fully. ❤
'In the middle of our street' makes sense to everyone in the UK, 😆 it means his house is in the middle of the row of houses on the street he lives in. A street being a road with rows of houses on either side.
When I was a kid and heard this song I pictured a house that was in the middle of the road
Makes sense here too, we've just been smokin lmao
Finally. Clarification after, what, 40 years? This was one of my upper-echelon High School songs, equal to Hungry Like the Wolf, Africa, She Blinded Me with Science, anything from Dio, too many from 80 -84 to list really.
I always thought it was a not-so-serious band having a bit of artistic license.
Did you just explain what a street was!?😂😂🤣 If not, sry for laughing. Just sounded funny;)
Makes sense to me, and I'm American. Even when I heard it as a kid. It just means in the middle of the block. 🤷
DAVID BOWIE - "LET'S DANCE" Young Stevie Ray Vaughn plays the guitar solo in this song before he became famous!
What ?
Theres this british sitcom about hooligan college roomates and they have a thing where they bring out bands at random points. Friggin brouth out Madness n they played this song. The show is called The Young Ones...pretty psychedelic
I loved that show!
@@etc7070 R.I.P. Rik Mayall.....🤔 that his name

How many people in Madness The answer is lots Great group of blokes all having a good time with some great music 🎶 👵🏼🙏🏽
Love the 80s I really enjoy watching your reactions you definitely know how to brighten up my day🎶🤗❤
Oh, how we loved this song when I grew up. Our house in the middle of our street! 🎶And Madness, how can you not love that name! 🎵❤️🇸🇪😍
I recommend Safety Dance by Men With No Hats next
Oh, yup....I think Leo would have a great time with that one!! (might need a few smokes before and after, too...)
Ahem, Men Without Hats. I mean, it would be easy for him to know if that's the name of the band.
And, oh, yes please. I love that song.
@@letmadora28 Wow...didn't even notice that!! haha...just goes to show how the brain sees what it wants to. Good thing I'm not a proofreader!
@@patdonnelly9392 So true.
Ha! Yes!!!
This song is one of the first songs I couldn't get out of my head as a child lol.
The original line-up of Madness was 7 members. They still play today but with 6 members instead of 7. "House of Fun" is a really enjoyable song & video of theirs from the early days, around the same time period/band line-up as "One Step Beyond" and "Our House." They also performed live on the excellent absurd-comedy Britcom series "The Young Ones," twice I believe.
“What’s up with Mama, y’all?” Love it! 😆Great, great song! 🙌🏻
Found u yesterday, subbed right away, good times
Best thing I ever did! I'll tell ya!

Welcome to the gang! He always brightens up our days with his hilarious take on great songs.
@@mangerinegirl 🔥🎶🎧🎶🔥
When I was a little kid, I thought it was our house in the middle of the street 🤣. The concept was hilarious to me
I think my generation had the best music, Gen X and this song is a perfect example of why and now I'm going to ask you to react to some Cure (again) Friday (I'm in Love) but I would be cool whatever song of The Cure you choose.
I lived in a squat with about 6/ 7 other people when I was young, which was a BIG BUILDING and litterally encompassed half of the street (not a really long street, but hey!) So we would sing "Our house, is the half of this whole street. Our house.." Which was great since it was indeed the truth. And I lovely song to sing about something true ;)
When that bass grumbles in at the beginning!
The Specials- Ghost Town, Gangsters, A message to you Rudy
unplug your cable modem for about 10-15 seconds and let it reconnect, you can also reset your wifi router.

Madness - “It must be love” is a great one. Great saxophone solo
💜💜💜💜👍👍👍👍. Love Love madness. I lucky too see them in mid 80's great concert💜💜💜👍👍👍
An absolutely amazing song, relatable lyrics to an era of British life for many families, outstanding brass and string accompaniment, just such an uplifting song.
This was one of my favorite videos on MTV back in the day. And, this song is STILL on my music playlist! Thanks for reacting to this one! Cheers
I'm glad because you make it so. Love from England.
You can't help but smile when you listen to any madness like you they just bring joy.
"What's up with Mama? Mama look a little different!" 😁
Btw, your internet issues could be a maintenance issue in your neighborhood... my husband is a cable guy, there's lots of random things that can cause problems
While there is a slight probability of that, it seems as if the mac itself is disconnecting from the router. A disruption in service will generally not disconnect the system from the router. It will stay connected but show no service message.
@@brinbar34 If his router runs off a landline then he might need to get a new micro-filter, i used to have the same issue with buffering, i changed the micro-filter and the problem was resolved. Micro-filters need to be changed every couple years, they only cost a couple a quid (£££'s or $$$'s)
Nah, just clear the temp folder. After all you do watch a lot of RUclips videos. LOL
@@garymcatear822 Understood. I am just referring to the mac itself being disconnected. Could possible be a driver issue with the mac. I also have a mac, for work, and several windows systems. Historically, if there is an issue with my router or service, the mac stays connected just reports no service. His mac was disconnected.
@@NightFogFilms good suggestion.
Music, to me, is like a diary... a record of whatever I was doing, where I was, what I was thinking or feeling. This song gives me the bestest of feelings. It has a catchy beat but the magic lies in the sentiment of the song and how family is always special even if there's a bit of Madness involved.
"It must be Love" is my fave. I was lucky to see them once in NY. Wonderful crowd.
One of the All time Best Songs!!!! Timeless.... Love this track!!!!!!
This song is apparently based on a real house in Camden Town, London.
I remember when this was on the radio constantly. The white house they showed near the end of the video reminded me of the first house I lived in when I was stationed in England. I lived in England for nine wonderful years '85-'94, I lived in the town called Banbury.
You know why you’re the best?
Because you make people smile my brother
Been with you since the start GOAT❤️
Good choice!
Please also check out "Walking on broken glass" by the ever amazing Annie Lennox!
I used to think "middle of the street" was like an obstruction. *face palm. Oooh.. middle of the block. Gooot it.
I always thought that “Our house, in the middle of our street” was a metaphor for how your home, everyone and everything in it, are really the centre of your world...especially when you’re young. (We don’t really use the term block in the U.K. in reference to streets/buildings, weirdly, block is most likely to be used in regards to an obstruction...either that or a building block)
Same! My son says it would make him think of one of those houses that they move going down the street or highway when he would hear it 😂
Madness filmed the video for this at Stocks House. The jacuzzi in the video was the largest in the UK. I used to work there when it was a magnificent hotel and country club, early 90s (currently privately owned). It was beautiful. Also it was a legendary, former playboy mansion. All the big movie stars and rock stars of the 70s would frequent it: Peter Cook, John Cleese, Christopher Reeve, Jack Nicholson, Keith Moon, Tony Curtis, Hugh Hefner, Mick Jagger, Warren Beatty, Roman Polanski, Bryan Ferry. In recent times, Oasis in the 90s produced the fabled cover for the Be Here Now album - in and around the hotel swimming pool.
And don't forget...."CANDY" by Cameo! It's a must 🎧
Seven people in Madness
Classic band 👍
The piano guy is Mr.Barzo, the "true" leader of the band
Who wouldn’t want to invite you in their home! It would be a blast to have you as a guest.
Madness is one of the best bands of all time. So damn talented musicians and so damn underrated. And when it comes to music videos, they were groundbreaking and far ahead of their time (most music videos in the early '80s were still mostly just filming while playing playback, but Madness made it an art form).
They have so many really great songs (with great music videos)
"Night Boat to Cairo"
"Baggy Trousers"
"Shut Up"
"It Must Be Love"
"Driving in My Car"
"Michael Caine"
"Bed and Breakfast Man"
"Embarrassment"
"Grey Day"
"One Step Beyond"
"Grey Day"
"Tomorrow's (Just Another Day)"
"My Girl"
"The Sun and the Rain"
"(Waiting For) The Ghost Train"
"The Prince"
"Cardiac Arrest"
"Wings of a Dove"
"Uncle Sam"
This was my first introduction to Madness as a child, and I didn't know it at the time, but also British humour (yes, humor spelled with a 2nd U). Their videos had a lot of Monty Python-esque elements, but back then I just liked the wacky look of it all. Try "House of Fun" next, it's about a teen trying to buy condoms! lol
If you are going into this era and genre here are a few you may dig:
Duran Duran
Depeche Mode
The Cure
Echo and the Bunnymen
Butthole surfers
🤘🏼
And....U2!! :)
The Smiths:)
I’ve never heard about Butthole Surfers but I love their name ;) The others were all part of my youth together with U2, Simple Minds, Ultravox, John Foxx, The Police and several more incl. bands from my home country
@@prebenpoejensen8256 Bahahaha!!!! I HAD to comment.... I'd never heard of the Butthole Surfers either.... Not quite as clever as Pearl Jam though!!!! ;) ;) And, if you've never seen the '92 interview where Eddie Vedder and the guys were asked the meaning of the name PJ.... you should, It's pretty funny!!
@@michaelgilbert197 I haven’t seen that interview with Eddie Vedder. Thanks, I’m gonna look that up :) Bye the way, I bought a ticket to a concert with Pearl Jam scheduled June 26 - 2020. It’s postponed twice! If I’m lucky, I will see them before they have retired ;)
Madness was the name my Hockey, Rugby and Lacrosse friends called me. My friends said I was intense when I played sports. That tune got lots of play back in the day.
One of my favorite bands ever. Love them.

In the 6th grade I heard this song every single day on the school bus.
It Must Be Love. Madness. Brilliant.
Baggy trousers is a must and my most fave from them 👌🏼👏🏼☺️ love madness. This is what I grew up listening to.
Great song. Miss the 80's. Reminds me of highschool.
This song always reminded me of our place, with 5 kids with 15 years between the oldest and youngest, and all their friends!
One of my favourite songs of all time.... Love this guys spirit
Madness we're known for their jerky dancing. They were a bunch of cool kids who still sing today. The lead singer is called Suggs.
I remember when this came out and my best friend Ross brought the 7" single to mine so I could listen to it and it blew me away !!!! Still love it over 35 years on and they are still on the go too ! ! Tour was postponed to accommodate cover so its next year as far as I know & can't wait to see them ! ! Brilliant band !!
I 100% know you will love this band and the sax in the middle will melt you buster 👍🏻😂

I'm here to see if he's remembered the dance.
When I do the Madness dance...my cats run under the bed. They have NO respect for my dance moves!
this so reminds me of my childhood. There were 4 kids in our house and 6 next door always in and out during the summer or playing outside in the street on our bikes and PoGo sticks. There was fewer cars and our street was a dead end anyway. Wings of a Dove and It must be Love are my other favourites.
I agree with Jennifer.... FORIEGNER: "Dirty White Boy", "Feels Like The First Time", "Hot Blooded", "Cold As Ice", "Urgent".... Great group with some pretty well known songs.... You'll probably recognize a few!!
Crap!!! I forgot "Waiting For A Girl Like You".... You should probably do that one first. All of their songs are GREAT but that one is special. I think you'll agree...
Do the songs "My Girl", "Embarrassment" and "It Must Be Love" - which are more musically serious, then "House of Fun" and "Baggy Trousers", " Michael Cane" for more fun... but whether the song is a fun one or not, these guys are brilliant musicians and song-writers. Part of the Ska revival in the UK in the 80's.
I heard this song for the first time when I was around eight and it was at a skating rink. Great memories!
This is a really fun song that was HUGE when it was released. Likely their most well known song worldwide, but they have several that are good (you've already reacted to One Step Beyond.) they are legends in this type of music and in Europe (especially in the UK.) Thanx for sharing! ~Be Blessed
40 years later and they're still touring! Well done Nutty Boys.
React to their song "House Of Fun" next.
Also a lot of the humor in this video is Monty Python inspired.
At the time of this song's release (1982), there were 7 core band members of Madness.
Madness are fricken' UK legends!!! Their song's? Many symbolize what the UK was like back then and when they were young but their videos were soooooo fun!!! Whacky as heck!
Great song! I love Madness 💜🎸🎶👏

Aww yiss, MOAR MADNESS has been satisfied. Madness is from Camden Town (if you've watched Peaky Blinders that should register.) Camden Town is *very* close to Tilbury, where the HMV Windrush arrived back in 1948, carrying the Calypso musicians Lords Woodbine, Beginner, and Kitchener. Lord Woodbine became the promoter for The Beatles in their early days. The musical influences of the 492 West Indian passengers coming from Kingston, Jamaica shaped the music that arose in the UK from there, Ska becoming influential in the working class communities of that part of the UK.
Madness is currently comprised of:
Chris Foreman: guitar (1976-1986, 1992-2005, 2006-present)
Mike Barson: keyboards, pianos, vibraphone, and backing vocals (1976-1984, 1992-present)
Lee Thompson: saxophone, percussion, and backing vocals (1976-1977, 1978-1986, 1992-present)
Graham "Suggs" McPherson: lead vocals (1977, 1978-1986, 1992-present)
Dan Woodgate: drums, percussion (1978-1986, 1992-present)
Mark Bedford: bass guitar (1978-1986, 1992-2009, 2012, 2013-present)
Ska was originally from Jamaica, and became linked with the working class subculture of the skinheads. Skinheads were not anything racist-connected, but in order to play on the popularity of the look and subculture the NP co-opted the music and look. As a result SHARPs arose, (S)kin (H)eads (A)ren't (R)acist (P)****, and the organization Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice.
Madness often had issues with the NP-converted racist skinheads coming to their shows, even though they were never associated with that co-opted subset.
