OK so I found the first mention that I can remember of the term being mentioned. There is a commercial on RUclips called "Monsters of Rock Platinum Edition" the CD's they are selling according to Discogs came out in 2007. I do feel like there might have been something in the late 90's with a different commercial selling CD's

I believe the origin of that term is all over the place and depends who you ask…. So I went and googled that question (as good as that result is) and got this: Use of the derogatory term "hair metal" started in the early 1990s, as grunge gained popularity at the expense of 1980s metal.

I would disagree , I don’t see creatures of the night as a hair metal album . That along with animalize may be kiss heaviest albums . And yes I classify the second wave of hair metal starting around Crashdiets debut along with the rest coming out of Sweden /Europe 🤘

Ya, you could see i didn't agree with Steve on that one! :) (regarding CoTN) - I do find Asylum has the Hair Metal Look (and a few songs), Crazy Nights was all hair metal... Thanks for watching and commenting! :)

It was definately NOT used in the 80ies! I was there in L.A. and interviewed most of these bands at the time or while they were on tour in their heyday, the term "Hair Metal" was coined in the 90s I think, a significant amount of time after the genre had died down. Before that, it was called Hard Rock, Heavy Rock, Glam Metal and in the early 80s, was referred to simply as heavy metal!
That term is actually a derogatory term coined in the grungy 90s to make fun of those groups made up by the bands who were not so good musicians as for example Warren deMartini, George Lynch or Rod Morgenstein!

Ya, I believe it was coined "popular" in the 90s for sure... BUT, i do remember in HS that one moment where someone dissed me with that saying... and I graduated in 1991 :) But it was a one-off for sure... I didnt see the Warrant interview my friend said he saw on tv for either Cherry Pie or Dog Eat Dog though...
And wow, talenless DeMartini, Lynch and Morgenstein eh? Riiiiiiiight! :) LOL

@@offthecharts2272 That was a misunderstanding, as English is not my mother language. Of course I meant that those 3 were exceptionally great musicians. I thought that was clear with my statement? Obviously not! (?) So please excuse my *Bad English.* Rod is my favorite drummer with Ken Mary. Warren ist one of my fave guitar players...

@@johann_casparbaumgartner6972 LOL All good my friend! I find it difficult to express myself in the comments at times also... It seems it was a misunderstanding... Rod Morgenstein is my favorite drummer also! Warren is up there as great guitarist also! Your english is not bad... it was just misunderstood by me... :) I do appreciate you commenting on my videos so don't let this misunderstanding stop you! :)
