- Please press the subtitles botton (c/c) near the lower right of the window if you want to see the credits (Painting's title and painter's name) for all the paintings in this video. There is only one painting (at minute 3:41) for which I haven't been able to find who the author is, so please let me know if you know.
This is a vinyl recording of Debussy's Clair de Lune performed by the London Symphony Orchestra; arranged and conducted by Stanley Black. It is an arrangement because Mr. Black adds a few countermelodies not found in the original piano score and takes a few liberties with the expression, but overall the final result is awesome and effective. Although there are many orchestrations of this piece (among them a well-known one by Stokowski) I particularly love this arrangement because the orchestra sounds large, but the interpretation is always slow and delicate (or let's say, never too loud, always within the boundaries and the mood that the title of the piece suggests). Also listen to the emphasis on the basses, and the subtle building of emotion achieved with appropriate phrasing! Other highlights are the way the main theme comes back (at 3:45); the violins playing so incredibly soft... and then the reaching of a climax at the end of the phrase with a particularly passionate and daring emphasis on the basses (4:21).
I'm an old man of 78 and just heard this masterpiece of music again today which brought me to tears. Unfortunately we will never be privileged to hear it again in such a volatile world, music like this comes from the heart which is now only history.
There will always be music like this. I'm an old man of 86
Honesty, I've tried to listen to other arrangements and I just keep coming back here... Thank you for posting this gem.
Yes I agree! I’ve been trying to download it from one or another plateforme but I’m not to good with that, any chance you would know where I can purchase it? Thank you!
@@caroledube8365 I think it is only available on vinyl. Never seen a CD with this track.
Check out “channel3youtube”piano version
This, my friends, is perfection.
If you've ever lost your soul, here's where you'll find it again.
This splendor of words can not arrive
My love for Debussy’s this masterpiece is higher than the mountain and deeper than the sea
A corner of Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun🇯🇵
No beauty is as inspirational and admirable and captivating as the beauty of this performance
London/ Decca Phase Four stereo. Marvellous recordings!
Yes!🙂
The most beautiful piece ever written! Even the name is beautiful!
I hate it when people say they don't like classical music. It's the most beautiful, peaceful thing known to man.
I don't get how one can possibly NOT fall in love with a song like this.
Taste is a thing you shouldn’t take from someone, but you’re right lol.
Sometimes due to the lack of exposure, the person just have not had the chance to appreciate something different from what they know.
They are not People bro or sis, they are things whitout soul...
Song?
its also known to woman. debussy was a genius!. i think he would roll over in his grave, if he ever heard all the garbage they have out now!!!
This was our symphony. Her smile was so enchanting and heartfelt just like this composition, she'd give a beautiful pause and then she'd crash into her wide smile that always took my breath away. Time just stops around me when I listen to this arrangement and think of her smile
This beautiful music will quench and moisturize the dryness of the soul
Creo que es maravilloso no tener todos el mismo gusto por la música.
En la variedad está la belleza del Arte.
Melancolía,rabia,dolor,locura,etc.
Es la expresión del yo interno, refleja nuestro estado de ánimo.
This is the best arrangement I've ever heard. Thank you for uploading this. I hope you and your family stay safe in this difficult time
@lucy10by: Arguably the best impressionist piece (even if Debussy didn't like that apellation) of all time. Even the simplest piano version evokes in me a whole range of emotions...from melancholy through insouciance and whimsy...to philosophical reflection or nostalgic yearning and ultimately - hopefulness and aspiration. Likewise, this instrumental rendition leaves me smiling in a puddle of tears, and somehow - uplifted.
My late mother had this on a 12-inch 78RPM record. I still get a little nostalgic for her whenever I hear the piece.
Norman Hinrichs oH! Very sad and sorrow !Give my regards.! From Japan
the best version I have finded
Thank you Katey. I'm a painter myself so every now and then I like searching on the net for great painters, known and not so known. I have found many I didn't even know existed, and some of them (like some of the ones showing in this video) are amazing indeed.
beautifully done... not rushed like so many others...
THX for putting this up...

This wonderful performance embodying the musical aesthetics of Debussy
Magnifique version... J'ai écouté beaucoup de versions différentes de Clair de Lune mais celle là est particulièrement saisissante ! Pleine d'émotions
@417midget Hi, the painting at 1:15 is titled "Moonlight on the Sound" by the great American impressionist painter Frederick Childe Hassam (1859-1935). The same painter has another beautiful moonlight painting called "Moonlight Scene", and another one called The Athenaeum - Isle of Shoals. They are all hard to find in high resolution.
Utterly beautiful! My favorite piece ever, nothing can compare to the beauty of this piece. I see my mom young again, the grass waving with the wind. It touches my very soul.
Reminds me of grandpa, he loved it so muc I´ve always appreciated this music, but even more now, 45 years in the making
Thanks... the painting at 4:51 is by victorian-era artist John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893). He is known for his remarkable night scenes. However, if you search for this painting you'll notice the original is much darker (but not less impressive). I wanted my video to to have a lot of color so I added color to this particular image. I guess my editing makes it look more fantastical and more "contemporary"...
This is, by far, my favorite version of this song. Sounds so grand!
Wonderful music. And the art you've chosen works fantastic with this song!
I think this has to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard, it takes me to another place and is so calming.....Love it
Una obra inmortal y bellísima en cualquiera de sus versiones para deleite de los mortales.
Genial Debussy
That's what I keep saying man! Glad you appreciatte that... thanks for you comment.
Nothing short of musical magic! The art only adds to a magnificent posting. The London SO's arrangements are always among the very best. THANKS!!!
Your love of music is equal to your selection of art. Well done and thank you for posting the artist names.
This splendor is undisputed
After listening to this masterpiece ,
I might have a dream
It's a dream of Debussy walking in the crowds of Paris in the effulgent night
Nothing short of incredible artistic expression on every level!!
The graphics which are delightful enhance the gorgeous melody.
Wonderful visual accompaniment to a gorgeous piece of music!
THANK YOU for posting this ! The orchestral version of this classic will Always be My fave. When the woodwinds kick in it can bring Me to tears of joy in the middle.
Magnificent recording and superb art....thank you!
@Composerwizard Indeed. It's my favorite version too, I wonder why it isn't very well known. I'm not talking about personal taste, this particular version is outstanding at all lights; you have already pointed many characteristics in your description. Anyway, I'm glad you found and uploaded this, now I can enjoy it too.
This is the most beautiful love song ive ever heard -the arraignment is incredible n touched me deeply the first time i listened to it - and certainly not the last- thank you De lune for this music
Nice comment! However, the composer's name is not "De Lune" it is Debussy, Claude Debussy... ha ha ha. Or perhaps you meant to call me Mr. De Lune? Mr. Lunatic? "de Lune" is the French phrase for "from de moon" or "of the moon". "Clair de Lune" could be translated to English as "moon glade" or "moon gap" or "moon clearing". Some might simply translate is as "moonlight". Just saying!
superb recording of a perfect arrangement! THANKS!!
@B17Boy Thank you for the link! Yes, it is a very beautiful arrangement and performance. I loved the sound of the strings (specially the first time they appear), and the interpretation was never too loud, and also very sensitive. I had heard that version before (it is an orchestration by Stokowsky) but not by that conductor in the video. I must admit it is at least as good as this version I have here, and not too different (if I compare it to others that I've heard), except for the beggining.
Love when what I think is an Oboe comes in.
Siv Jensen un deleite para vista y oído!
Thank you 🇨🇦
You are welcome PA
THIS IS A FINE WORK FROM MR. DEBUSSY.A STUNNING PIECE OF WORK.
Thank caress the soul. Beautiful work.
Thank you! The painting at 5:10 is one of the many moonlight scenes by 19th century english painter John Atkinson Grimshaw (1848-1918). All his moonlight paintings are remarkable. They are gloomy and splendid at the same time. Just do a google image search typing his name and you'll find plenty of them.
My favorite is the painting @ 3:44. It’s similar to the scene I beheld at our summer camp in NH one evening around midnight. I couldn’t sleep and had put on this music as I sat on the dock and watched as the moon came from behind the tall pines and broke through the few clouds. As the moonlight danced across the gentle waves toward me, the music matched exactly what I was seeing. I understood them that Debussy had seen the same scene and had managed to capture it in music. Magical.
My soul leaves the body and
will stay in the air
and will fall asleep.
I love all kinds of music but this is my favorite song such a beautiful piece of music so amazing music can just be so beautiful I almost have tears of happiness, joy and love
Achingly beautiful video...Exquisite and sublime!
Thank for posting this masterful work! Bravo!
Thank you for posting this wonderful video. Matching a sublime musical recording with great visuals... bravo!
Wonderful music!
And great work, nice video!
This has got to be the best!!! 💕💕💕
Magnificent arrangement!!!
@TheRevmack Yes, but the one in Oceans Eleven (if Im not mistaken) is a recording by the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy. Ormandy is one of my favorite conductors, and the "Philadelphia sound" is often breathtaking. But his version of Clair de Lune gets a bit too loud and pompous for my taste. It is still never the less, a beautiful interpretation also (and that scene in the movie was remarkable).
MAGNIFICENT piece of ART...
what a magnificent arrangement!
The skill of Stanley Black is recognizable here in this rendition by the great London Symphony Orchestra of Debussy's sublime melody.
Totally agree.
So beautiful, I fill up every time I hear this piece. The paintings are exquisite..
propably one of the very best recordings.
I can see the moonlight....
Joyeux anniversaire Monsieur Debussy
That was a fantastic video and a really nice arrangement of the piece.
Thanks for posting.
Really great video.
awesome! It's perfection! And fantastic art!
Meravigliosa interpretazione. Grazie ❤
I totally love the horn at 4:22 and 4:33! This C-Flat in that Db chord makes the ending so perfect!
I am immersed in pleasure while listening this masterpiece .
From Tokyo in Japan where deeply love Debussy and France .
Which national are you watching this video
@mctimilsworth Thank you for this nice comment. Yes, I agree that a lot of what you hear in commercial music today is superficial (not to say worse things). I'm glad you like this. That means there still hope, and young people who also have a desire for the beautiful and the sublime.
@organboi Oh, and I do agree Debussy would not have used this orchestration. He was also an unique orchestrator with few equals. But other orchestral versions of Clair de Lune have more radical instrumentation changes than this one. So, I’m intrigued: Besides the sugary presence of the Celeste, what instrumentation changes here seemed “too much” for you? I rather feel this version blends almost all instruments most of the time, with not too many contrasting colors…
Hey, but I was wondering if you knew the name of the painting at 4:51? Thanks, and great video by the way, the artwork compliments the music so naturally and beautifully.
its so beautiful that hurts me...
This masterpiece is Japanesque scenery .

Arigatou ! ( Japanese thanks words )
Thank-you very much to your wonderful reply !
I think that Debussy,s works are similar with Japanese atmosphere .
The moon of 「Clair de Lune」looks like Sagano,s excellent moon of Kyoto in Japan .
Someday please come to Japan and watch Sagano,s excellent moon (嵯峨野名月).
If you are misplaced somewhere in Japan , a strange Japanese will always help you .
There is a world as it is 「 Bridge over Trouble Water 」 of Simon and Garfunkel .
Especially , Japanese old people and a mass of kindness .
The Japanese food is full of variety and is anxious about your weight because it is very delicious .
How is your condition and your country ?
How do you think and know about Japan ?
Take care of each other
Good luck

@itschokechap Yes, the C flat makes the chord be Db dominant seven (V of IV) instead of the usual Dflat major. Sounds like a bittersweet "goodbye" chord to me... first resolving to the elegant subdominant, and then to the nostalgic Bb minor in those 4 bars. Both the Ormandy version and this one have the horn doing that note... it does sound like the perfect choice.
Thank-you very much to this incomparable and exquisite performance
Hi! My dad is a huge fan of this song. Whenever he is asked what his favorite song is he always says Claire de lune but emphasizes vehemently that this version is the best one. I noticed you had the word Vinyl at the end... Do you know of anywhere I can get my hands on a Vinyl Record for him? It would mean the world to him and be such a great surprise. ❤️
Dear Katherine, you can find this vinyl on sale in eBay and in Amazon, but ususally used, and only a few sellers sell it. Hope you find a good one for your dad! He must have a great musical sensitivity :).
Jorge Bennett He really does! Thank you so much for responding and for sharing a great taste in music with my dad. 💕
@Atheneastro LOL you are the second person to say this here. I wasn't aware Ren & Stimpy had some classsical music albums. I think I found the link you are referring to (it is a very nice version of Clair de Lune too) but I tried to post it here and I couldn't (an error window popped up).
This song is one of my favorite song .This song is great ,splendid and superior,,This composer is best artist in the world,I am interesting in this composer,,What nationality are you who are listening to this song? tell me it

Awesome orchestal :D
When I see the moon of Hiroshige,s Ukiyoe while listening to Debussy 「 Clair de Lune 」 ,
I am impressed with the feeling of strong yearning to the Japan of Van Gogh .
Debussy,s 「 Clair de Lune 」 fits well with the moon of Hiroshige,s Ukiyoe .
The paint of Hiroshige blue enhances the effect of 「 Clair de Lune 」 .

Debussy,s beloved daughter , who has a great direct gene , died when she was 14 years old .
It's very sad .
The genes of the great Debussy,s direct lineage have disappeared from this world forever .
If Debussy,s beloved daughter had lived long ,
we might have heard of her or her child,s works .
It's very sad
I am sorry .

@purplemelody9008 The painting is from John Atkinson Grimshaw
What is the painting at 5:10? Great slide show for this piece by the way.
@majorshibalover123 I didn't know what "Friday" (the song) was (I'm 43 years old, and I prefer music from the 60's, 70's & 80's)) so I went into your channel and saw the video. Hahahahaa ok I see your point more clearly... and thank you for the nice comment! And oh... I like Satie too...
doesn't get much better than that
What is the painting at 1:42 ,anybody please ? it catches my heart.
"Pont-Aven in the Moonlight" by post-impressionist painter Ferdinand du Puigaudeau.
Beautiful 🤩
A genius composer like him will seldom appear in this world.
Chris Moyles plays it every morning at 7:20 and it sends me off to work on a cloud...nuff said!!!
