Just heard that Mr. Labé passed away on 1-18-2022. This is by far my favorite rendition of Claire de lune. We are all fortunate enough to be blessed with this music and talent. Rest in peace.
I'm really sad to hear this, I discovered this version of Clair de lune maybe 14 years ago when I was trying to play it myself, and it has since become my all time favorite . I come back sometimes to listen to it, even if Mr. Labé is no longer there, his music will remain.
Each time I listen to this piece I can't help but think it is describing the journey of life. 0:00 - 1:20 = Childhood 1:20 - 1:51 = Adolecence 1:51 - 2:03 = Realisation that the world isn't against you ;-) 1:57 - 2:38 = Young adulthood, time to grow as a person 2:38 - 2:54 = Love 2:54 - 3:09 = Relaxing into routine of adulthood 3:09 - 3:25 = Senior work years 3:25 - 4:08 = Retirement years 4:08 - 4:48 = Elderly years with your soulmate 4:48 - 5:13 = Time of reflection A beautiful piece
I use to hold my baby girl in my arms every night and play this for her till she fell asleep. The just sit and be thankful for the love I was given. She is 7 now and I still do that. I love my little girl so much.
I have looked and listened to a number of Clair de lune performances on RUclips and I always come back to this one. One of my favorite performances of my favorite classical piece of music. So beautiful!
This is suck a wonderful piece of music. My mother loved classical music and played it while I was young and growing up. It now makes me cry remembering her. Hello, Mom! I Love and Miss You so much.
Music is capable of doing many things. One of which is awakening the mind to what may have been forgotten through time, even simple emotions. No one knows how, but that’s ok, because it shows the beauty that one person can create through creativity. Van Gough using pain to create beauty. Beethoven working to create what he knew would be a masterpiece even though he’d never hear it.
Thank you for not rushing through this piece as so many performers do. This is about comparing a lover's soul to a peaceful walk in the moonlight. I do not believe that this would be a time to run; it's a relaxed walk that allows you feel intense love and romance. Thank for observing what this poem/piece is truly about.
God, this is the most beautiful and moving song ever. It always brings me to tears every time I listen to it. It's so wonderful and full of meaning. The first time I heard it I fell in love with it and that was Victor Borge's version, but everyone since is just as enchanting.
this was my mom's favorite song as mine i play by ear and by hands lol. i played it at my daughters. funeral who died in 9/11 w my late wife in tower 1 i love this song so much happy thanks giving all
+Captain MARK Serrato I am extremely sorry for your loss. I grew up in NJ and overlooking NYC. In the 70's I watched the towers go up foot by foot with my father's telescope. This song brings eternal solace to the soul. I play soprano saxophone and am downloading the sax version from Amazon. This music goes to show that we are really in God's hands.
+Captain MARK Serrato This is a wonderful piece to remind us that there's beauty and hope all around us, even in the worst of circumstances. Here's a hug from the other side of the world. (I'm writing this while my daughter is trying to play this same song on her keyboard, and that was what brought me here in the first place. The story never ends, my friend.)
One of the most beautiful & soul stirring pieces ever written. This pianist pulls from this musically mystical, melancholy enchantment like few other pianists. Bravo! Most pianists rush through this rich pool of music, compromising the tumult of emotional expression which defines this incredible piece. Thanks for uploading & sharing such a marvelously translated masterpiece.
Absolutely beautiful , perfectly played aswel. this song is one of those classical songs that will never be forgotten, Its a song that churns your stomach , it brings back memories of child hood and lonlyness and it reminds us all how wonderful the world can be , how beautiful music makes happiness and tears, Claude Debussy was definately one of the greatest and genuine minds in the world.
I listen to this daily, I couldn't imagine my life without this beautiful piece to help me feel comfort & calm when life is tough. Thank you so so much
Absolutely beautiful. This was my mother's signature piece, she studied to be a concert pianist. I have her original copy of this piece and treasure it. This is done in extraordinary fashion, thank you!
here i sit, thinking that this sounds like quite the good quote, i should maybe check out that movie... Of course it is filthyfrank Was pretty obvious from the getgo wasn't it ^^
It makes me remember my mom who passed away a few years ago. It evokest a flood of memories all good, and strong as if she is somehow still here. She loved listening to Debussy.
I agree " Jeremias Nater " said. Google doodle for Debussy 151st birthday brought me back the life when I was single listened beautiful music a lot...... but listenless by now. Thomas Labe played so beautiful, really showed the view of " Clair de Lune" front my eyes.
As someone who doesn't play the piano, I can't speak to Mr. Labe's adherence to Debussy's instructions, but this rendition was absolutely magical for me. Just astoundingly beautiful. I wish I could get a CD-quality version of this rendition.
Stunning! This piece is the reason I started to play the piano and something I won't master for many years to come. Love how the expression can change with each performer but remain beautifully dreamy….
I think he played it very with technicality and precision, but the whole first section just seems like a chore for him. Its like he thinks its beneath him. The whole point of Debussy I personally think is to really reach into and and take out what you want (within the guidelines he leaves). And he just plays the intro and finale (mostly the intro) very robotic. I find it is missing the emotion that Debussy wants people to find. I might be bias because i have interpreted the song in a different way, but the only version that I have ever enjoyed hearing another person play is Angela Hewitt's. As said i am bias because I play my opening very similar to the way she dynamically builds it up, but if you have not heard it. Go listen to it, I think she is an amazing pianist and you can see the enjoyment she has in playing the piano.
I think Angela Hewitt plays it from a woman's perspective. Her rendition sounds softer and more lingering. Whereas this one is stronger and more rigid. I prefer this one because it gives more room for imagination in my opinion.
i found this by chance. Entered random word on youtube search bar. Thought of a random number pressed down that number on my down key, pressed ener. Picked another random number scrolled down and skipped the videos and stopped on the number i picked. As for the video very relaxing, Enjoyed it a lot. :)
I first heard this song over 30 years ago in a Delta Airlines commercial!! I over heard my 3 year old daughter playing this song on her Nabi and I had to SoundHound it and instantly the memories came back!!
Your words fill my heart with joy. There are very few adult people today who can really understand what it is like to be a child, because they gave up being "childish" for so long, drowning the child in them with tons of coffee and alcohol, trying to become "mature". But you are perhaps one of the few who still understands who simple and beautiful life can be if you preserve a part of your childhood. This process is what I call true maturity.
I have not words to express how Beautiful I find this piece of music! Only wished I had continued to learn the piano when younger, so I could express my love, to the one I love! My heart lifts, when I hear this!!
So gentle but powerful and moving. One of the best songs ever written in my opinion. This was beautifully done. Debussy was incredible. Thank you for posting this wonderful piece.
This song always reminds me of the only woman I can say with confidence I've ever truly loved, up until now. It would be arrogant however, to surreptitiously display my personal emotions and attachment to the piece when it's played so beautifully. The composition is flawless, and the timing (without question) the best I've heard outside of original recordings. Worthy of the 1.7 million views it has, no doubt. It is surely an absolute shame that it hasn't been listened to in this particular venue even more...
Yep. Have another go. I'm no pianist (though I play be ear ok). Takes me forever to learn score but perseverance pays off! Like you I started this piece over a year ago and have recently had another go. Pretty fluent for the first half now! A few more weeks haha.
I am the proud owner of a 1967 Steinway & Sons Hamburg Model D Concert Grand Piano, just like this one. I can tell you that my piano sounds very much the same as this one and it is a dream come true for me to have been able to buy it. I bought it from an older Gentleman who bought it brand new at the Hamburg Factory 45 years ago, it is in as new condition today, so the quality is like no other. God Bless you all and God Bless the Steinway Family who have always made the best pianos
I got here cause some guy was from Chicago music exchange was playing part of this on a gibson SG. some guy put Clair de lune in the comments. so I looked it up. I've heard this many times I dig it. not what I would usually listen too but it's calming. somewhat melencholy
I love Claire de Lune. It is one of the most relaxing piano concertos I have ever heard. It takes all the cares and woes away and sends me into another world of peace.
Hands down my favorite song of all time. I seriously almost cired the first time I listened to it. It gives me a feeling of comfort, but also the feeling of being away from home, from leaving childhood.
This song reminds me of my sons infancy, in a strange way this song would play at random moments at that time I find it peaceful. I grown to love it.... it takes me back ♥♪
I am learning this piece right now and here is a decision i am deliberating. At 3:25 when it returns to Tempo I, the way it is written it has the bass note of each left hand arpeggio through that section HELD, through beat two, under a REST. In order to hold that bottom note, i broke the arpeggio so that my right hand does the top note of each one through that section allowing my left pinky to stay on the bass note.. it undoubtedly sounds better but takes so much work so I come on here to see what this guy does... he releases the bass note and just pedals it :P Screw it thats what im doin.
This is my favorite composition. I never get tired of it. I listen to it before I go to sleep. It brings me painful memories, but I don't care- I love it.
This is one of the best covers I've heard of this piece. So many people play it too fast when it's supposed to be played like THIS! To some of the guys saying they've learnt this piece after 2 years of playing piano, not taking it away from you, but I sincerely doubt it, this is a RCM grade 10 piece. So many believe that being able to read the music and play the notes means you can play it, when its all down to the timing, the touch and articulation which is why it is a grade 10 piece.
I absolutely love this song, and this rendition. I play this at key moments of quiet in my life, each time it is a defining moment. I expect to hear this in Heaven one day.
I've been working on it for 2 years on a 1924 Gulbranson upright. (My Great Grandparent's) It doesn't perform like that Steinway and I can't do it like he does but it is fun and frustrating. I think I sound bretty good but I don't get a whole lot of compliments...
chairs She would be playing it to send him on to the next life, realm, state of being, etc., like a tribute to/for her father. I have already heard this song played at a funeral and my own mother would love me to play this song at her funeral as well. I can play the song, but not by memory, but I doubt I could concentrate anyway enough to play it by memory.
I wasn't going to, but I actually feel compelled to say that my last comment where I directed the C word at you was intended as a joke... hope no offence was caused. It just seemed like an opportunity for some comedy.
Coughing would be almost as annoying as a pointless comment about the possibility of a cough. Maybe it will rain today, maybe the sky will fall...waaah. Clickbait fail!
The clarity, and mystery, of this piece, bring together the both the known, and unknown, of love...in a way no one can clearly describe, yet everyone seems to understand. It causes both tearful joy and painful repose, knowing that while we may find love, we still fail to grasp its eternal meaning...
A lot of this song seems pretty easy. Is it? I want to learn it. I don't take lessons and I never have but I'm fairly good. I can play about half of the entertainer at fairly fast tempo. So is it hard?
Nero Vuk Thanks for your negative comment, cynic. Yes, objectively speaking there's a clear difference in difficulty. But that's not what it's about. I often hear students and friends say "I can't do that. That's too hard." .. and then they're unable to learn the piece simply because they're already convinced they can't do it. There's also a bunch of young kids who don't have this internal voice saying they can't do it, and they progress really fast.
It is a deceivingly difficult song, especially if played in its original 5 flats. There are a lot of subtle inflections and rhythmic oddities. My mum is a piano teacher and she assigns it to her grade 10 students (the final grade before you go for your ARCT Performing Arts certificate in the Royal Conservatory of Music's system).
In reply to your question: It’s not about if you can learn to play the music but rather can you find the beauty of it deep within yourself to bring it out so lovingly that birds can sing along with you while you play, and nature can breathe something fresh for a change, and that the Moon and the Earth can meet and kiss each other, or to deliver it like in this performance. That’s the question you should ask. But go for it!
It's so beautiful and so pure! Every single note is just so perfectly allocated! The contrast between the perfection and delicacy of this piece and the world I'm in is astonishing! Just close your eyes and allow Debussy to sweep you off for a few minutes.
Luscious melody . Debussy is great . This music has the tremendous power to purify the human soul . This play leaves me spellbound . My heart wavered with emotion . It's too cozy music so it's going to fall into an eternal sleep .
Just heard that Mr. Labé passed away on 1-18-2022.

A beautiful piece
What a beautiful comment
very poetic and romantic
This performance is incredible. I play it over and over and still can't seem to get enough of the emotions that I feel from the music and the pianist.
I use to hold my baby girl in my arms every night and play this for her till she fell asleep. The just sit and be thankful for the love I was given. She is 7 now and I still do that. I love my little girl so much.
You're an awesome dad

This piece awakes some kind of nostalgic, maybe melancholy feeling. It's astonishingly beautiful.

I'm amazed no one coughed.
That's just how awesome this is, you couldn't even if you tried.
Rick Deckard lol
*cough cough
How could they cough.... they were all breathless.
lmturmenne if you're breathless you tend to cough to release the carbon and gasp for air........
Looking at these magnificent hands and hearing that extraordinary music just makes me think: God thank you for your creation and kindness.
A chaque écoute, mon poil s'hérisse, Merci Monsieur Debussy pour ce moment d'extrême douceur.
Absolutely incredible interpretation. Astounding. I watch this video every day, and it makes my day.
Beautiful beautiful beautiful, and no RUclips crickets. Best version. Thank you.
Every touch he makes is so beautiful, no unnecessary movements.
God, this is the most beautiful and moving song ever. It always brings me to tears every time I listen to it. It's so wonderful and full of meaning. The first time I heard it I fell in love with it and that was Victor Borge's version, but everyone since is just as enchanting.

Oh I'm so sorry for your losses. This is indeed a beautiful song :)
+Captain MARK Serrato Was my mothers favourite song too, it must comfort you to listen to this as it does I, so sorry for your loss
+Captain MARK Serrato This is a wonderful piece to remind us that there's beauty and hope all around us, even in the worst of circumstances. Here's a hug from the other side of the world.

Most pianists rush through this rich pool of music, compromising the tumult of emotional expression which defines this incredible piece. Thanks for uploading & sharing such a marvelously translated masterpiece.
To me this music depicts the journey of life perfectly.
.....all the way to Vegas!
If asked what piece of music to hear before I die, I would choose this.
Bravo Bravo. Beautiful rendtion, thank you x. A man in his 40's bought to tears from such joy!
"Music is the silence between the notes." - Claude Debussey

This has been my favorite composition since childhood.

This piece will continue to amaze and sooth the people long after we are gone. In this, Debussy is immortal. Happy Birthday Claude, we thank you.
Absolutely beautiful. This was my mother's signature piece, she studied to be a concert pianist. I have her original copy of this piece and treasure it. This is done in extraordinary fashion, thank you!
Absolutely stunning, beautiful piece by Debussy. One of my all time favourite pieces of music.
This will forever be my favorite piece. Ever.
Magnifique 👌🏼
i knew everything in the universe yet i could not fall in love
I was forever trapped in an infinite timeline of pain and suffering. I envy death.

CLAIR DE LUNE

Best interpretation ever. Bravo !
Quite simply the most elegant & beautiful piece of music ever composed.
Quelle merveille!

And what might your problem be? He was messing around on RUclips and found a video he liked. Don't insult his whole life because of a one time event.

It's very crazy because this is exactly what I imagine. I imagine myself in Paris.

Why that camera switch at 2:40 when he's about to play the most visually interesting part of the piece ?! Why ?
because it's TOP SECRET lol

It sounds so easy yet I tried to play it last year and gave up maybe I should try again
Try again!!! :)
Yep. Have another go. I'm no pianist (though I play be ear ok). Takes me forever to learn score but perseverance pays off! Like you I started this piece over a year ago and have recently had another go. Pretty fluent for the first half now! A few more weeks haha.
tunnelmax took me a solid year to perfect this piece. Don't regret a minute of it. Don't be demoralised, I'm only grade 1!
Adam Jones Oh, so while you're not playing guitar in Tool you're practicing piano? Good to know.
Keep going...Enjoy the journey
I could listen to this all night and appreciate the beauty of Clair De Lune!
I love Claire de Lune. It is one of the most relaxing piano concertos I have ever heard. It takes all the cares and woes away and sends me into another world of peace.
R.I.P. Thomas Labé
Hands down my favorite song of all time. I seriously almost cired the first time I listened to it. It gives me a feeling of comfort, but also the feeling of being away from home, from leaving childhood.
Sounds like the first beautiful day after a war.
+Ron B indeed
+Ron B My "First Day" was tomorrow, but everyday is yesterday. (Iraq 05-07)
+Ion Hunter play regularly bach-buisoni Chaconne in D by Hélène Grimaud especially from 8 till 12 minutes, that might help a little bit...
What a beautiful comment, how very appropriate.it seems.
I do it the same way. Why worry about holding the note when the pedal will do it for you
This is my favorite composition. I never get tired of it. I listen to it before I go to sleep. It brings me painful memories, but I don't care- I love it.
meu filho dorme ouvindo Debussy.
Man, I have got to play The Evil Within, again!
Jajajaja..
that's where remember this from! the song is also mentioned in a game called white night and I had to look it up.
I absolutely love this song, and this rendition. I play this at key moments of quiet in my life, each time it is a defining moment. I expect to hear this in Heaven one day.
Eargasmic. One of the pieces I wanna learn before I die; imagine how euphoric it must be to play that on the keys.
currently trying my hand at this now, and i haven't played piano since a kid
I've been working on it for 2 years on a 1924 Gulbranson upright. (My Great Grandparent's) It doesn't perform like that Steinway and I can't do it like he does but it is fun and frustrating. I think I sound bretty good but I don't get a whole lot of compliments...
debussy is my favorite composer and you play it beautifully. thank you, thomas.
My dad plays this song just like this and I feel when he dies (IN A LONGGGGGG TIME) I want to play this for him.
Why would you say that lmao
chairs She would be playing it to send him on to the next life, realm, state of being, etc., like a tribute to/for her father. I have already heard this song played at a funeral and my own mother would love me to play this song at her funeral as well. I can play the song, but not by memory, but I doubt I could concentrate anyway enough to play it by memory.
wow i just finished learning this and came across this comment from 2 years ago.. what the heck was i thinking when I wrote this?
ANZIZZY so it is possible 🙏
Beautiful...simply beautiful.
Now this is real music, Not like the crap they play today.
stfu gangnam style iz DA BOMMMM jus cos a song has mor notes dont mean it bettr
My favorite of Debussy when feeling nostalgic. It's possible that music calms the soul. I love this piece.
Great melody; the only problem is now I can’t see debussy without laughing
Same brooo
Does Arima Kousei play this...eventually??? (Shigatsu wa kimi no osu...Your Lie in April?)
Yes he does, and it's done very beautifully!
Gabriel Garcia Yes when his best friend (girl) gut dumped and was crying :>
Gabriel Garcia yep.... haha
Ahahaha that anime brought me here! Yeah, I remember when kousei was singing this song while walking in the seashore with tsubaki
+Gabriel Garcia yeah he played it in episode 15 where tsubaki finally realized her true feelings
One of my favorite piece by Debussy ... Simply mind blowing ... 😇👍
His name is what now 😭
debussy 🤤
Sublime. The most beautiful piano piece I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Bravo
Someone probably already commented this but was anyone else waiting for some prick to cough loudly for half the performance?
no.... why would you expect someone to do that?
YES OMG
I wasn't going to, but I actually feel compelled to say that my last comment where I directed the C word at you was intended as a joke... hope no offence was caused. It just seemed like an opportunity for some comedy.
Coughing would be almost as annoying as a pointless comment about the possibility of a cough. Maybe it will rain today, maybe the sky will fall...waaah. Clickbait fail!
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.
I wish he was my dad
The clarity, and mystery, of this piece, bring together the both the known, and unknown, of love...in a way no one can clearly describe, yet everyone seems to understand. It causes both tearful joy and painful repose, knowing that while we may find love, we still fail to grasp its eternal meaning...
A lot of this song seems pretty easy. Is it? I want to learn it. I don't take lessons and I never have but I'm fairly good. I can play about half of the entertainer at fairly fast tempo. So is it hard?
It is only as hard as you think it is. Anyone is able to play anything with enough practice and focus. Keep at it. You'll get it!
***** Thanks for nothing, philosopher. There is difference between learning Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and learning Rondo Alla Turca.
I've been brought to tears by a song .... im speechless
This song, for me, the slower the better
It's so beautiful and so pure! Every single note is just so perfectly allocated! The contrast between the perfection and delicacy of this piece and the world I'm in is astonishing! Just close your eyes and allow Debussy to sweep you off for a few minutes.
