    I'm surprised you haven't tried the dutch way of celebrating a festive dinner yet! It's called Gourmetten and most dutch people eat like this on Christmas. You have a little electric grill or little pans in the middle of the table and small pieces of meat, fish and vegetables, sauces, bread and salads and you just sit around the table all night cooking your own little meal all night long, so nobody is cooking dinner in the kitchen all day long. I really think you and the fam will love it! Lots of love from the Netherlands ❤️

    Loved these different meals! As a Brit who moved to Aus 12 years ago it’s very strange to wrap your head around not having a proper roast but let me tell you, it suuuucks cooking a roast in temps in the high 30’s. Did it once and never will again. Over here it tends to be more of a brunch/lunch situation with lots of fresh seafood and salads plus a Christmas ham, then I personally do a mini roast for a late evening meal when it’s a bit more enjoyable to eat. It’s mango and stone fruit season so there’s always a mango salad and usually a big bowl of cherries. Plus pavlova for dessert passion fruit on top.

      I live in the southeast USA so it's technically winter at Christmas but it can be hot here, like 80f (27c) sometimes and we definitely do more outdoor and fresh foods than some parts of the USA. When I was a kid my dad smoked porked loins or fried turkey every year. We have broccoli salad usually, cold dessert/cream salads as well, but we still do a lot of heavy traditional northern hemisphere stuff!

      As an Aussie that moved to Europe for work, to me it was the complete opposite! It was so strange having to adjust to celebrating Christmas in winter, on Christmas eve and at night! But, after more than 6 years in Europe, I couldn't see celebrating Christmas any other way! Plus over here we have all the Christmas markets and mulled wine

    1) over season the meat as it boils out!
    2)put the oil in and fry them until the cabbage browns before putting water
    3) season the water with more than salt and pepper, I normally do it in veg stock.

    The thing about Australia is that there are so many nationalities so everyone's Christmas looks a little bit different and is inspired by different cuisines. If you wanted to do a 'traditional' Australian Christmas it would probably just look exactly like an English one. Also lol Christmas in Australia is one of the hottest times of the year hence barbeques and salads

      Do they call lanttu swede in English? I was so confused why it was the Finnish christmas dinner and she kept talking about swedes 😅 I had a comment thread recently where I was trying to explain lanttulaatikko but appearently it’s an extremely rare vegetable that few know about outside of scandinavia, and the only translation I could find was rutabaga.
      (And we also have peas on christmas btw)

    • @suski2634
      @suski2634 2 года назад

      @@Eucis93 haha I was sooo confused too when she kept talking about swedes while making Finnish food, but eventually I realised she was talking about lanttu, not Swedish people 😂 so I wasn’t familiar with the translation either, I’ve also heard that some people call lanttu ”turnip” (but that translates to nauris?)

    • @razzuie
      @razzuie 2 года назад

      The English language seems to wildly use the word turnip for both kålrot/lanttu (big yellow)and majrova/nauris (small white and purple)depending on which English speaking country you’re in. But rutabaga/swede is lanttu and turnip is nauris.

We just fry them sharply before cooking it in the oven and the filling is minced meat, but mostly spiced like regular meat balls (pepper, salt, paprika, mustard, one egg). And the gravy is made out of the remaining in the pot and some tomato paste 🤗

    Greek here🙋‍♀️ I am impressed I really liked your video and the soup looked amazing!In general good representation of what we eat on the holidays. If I can only correct you on the laxanodomlades(cabbage rolls)the leafs for your cabbage rolls were to hard and you roll them a little bit to big . Normally when done properly this dish melts in your mouth. Most Greek families make them with onion, ground beef and rice and the spices everyone uses varies however everyone I know makes it with cumin,salt,paprika,pepper and sometimes parsley. We always serve them with an augolemono sauce like the one you made for the chicken soup.

I've honestly havent heard of people making pork for Christmas but the cabbage dish seems different to what my family makes. A good tip is to actually boil the head of cabbage until its more tender so that it prevents it from breaking! It just seemed underseasoned to me, it can be in the same flavours as the chicken soup. And yes greek food has A LOT of lemon, I use lemon in everything!

    As a British ex-pat in Australia, I vowed fervently that I would always maintain our traditional Christmas dinner. I have never done it in 16 years! I cannot imagine trying to survive in a hot kitchen in a Queensland summer and eating all that heavy food! Surf and Turf all the way for us, these days - the biggest, best prawns and steak we can afford, together with boiled new potatoes and a simple green salad. Yummers. Smoked ham and a selection of salads for supper. Easy as pie, too!

Also you could do a video eating only portuguese mealsfor 24 hours or just trying some of our food and snacks. Loved the video, much love from Portugal! :)

    I’m Hungarian and I think it was only my family as Hungarian traditional don’t eat meat on Christmas Eve but my Nan was like nah we’re having meat.
    So we have Breaded Chicken - Rántott hús, potatoes with caramelised onions, cucumber salad - Uborkasaláta, rice with onion and peas- Rizi bizi and to finish it all off beigli - rolled dough with either poppy seeds all walnuts! In my opinion the best Christmas dinner.
    My husband is Australian and they have a mix of traditional and new but if they can use the bbq they will. Love your channel btw

    A finn here, the swede casserole is really nothing like the traditional finnish dish (no cheese in ours, also it's always pureed), but i think not many people would like the classic finnish xmas casseroles :D They're a bit of an acquired texture. I might have to try that gratin you did though, it sounds great!

    I’m a Tasmanian (Australian), we have a traditional roast Christmas lunch. Tea time is usually cold meats and salads. Never have I had a mango salad! Tassie is the most southern state and our weather can still reach quite cold temperatures even in the summer, snow is not unheard of in a Tassie summer!

    • @JB-vd8bi

      Mango salad is great. Or try a Thai pawpaw/papaya salad. So good

  • @louiseb5046
    @louiseb5046 2 года назад

    As an Australian, never heard of any of those salads but totally on brand. You should try a Wombok salad in the Summer, it is almost always at gatherings and been at all my Christmas meals. Definitely is divided whether to have a hot meal or a cold meal, but my solution is generally one of each - having a roast + potato bake, hot salads etc meal for lunch, then using the roast ham cold with salads for dinner so you can still go all out for dessert.

    Hey! You nailed the Polish fish, it looked amazing! You asked in the video about whether or not you eat the salad with the fish so thought I'd let you know what we do. The potato salad is usually ate with bread/ more of as a Christmas breakfast thing more than with the actual dinner itself (at least in my household). The fish would normally be served with some mashed potato or bread as well. Also I know they are a lot of hassle but you should defo try making pierogi at some point, they are the centrepiece of most polish xmas dinners
