The point I always bring up when people start to gatekeep punk rock is this: Before the music industry and radio stations wanted to make it more commercially viable and distance themselves from the "punk stigma" by relabeling some of it as "New Wave", bands like Blondie and The Talking Heads were considered punk bands.
Punk rock in its infancy didn't have a specific "sound" or a "look", and was much more diverse and inclusive than it became after that initial first wave of bands.
Yes, there were bands like The Clash, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, The Dead Boys, etc., but they weren't solely what punk rock was, and when people try to say "x" band isn't punk rock based on some arbitrary criteria that wasn't even present when punk rock was arguably at its commercial peak, I point them back to the history of punk rock itself.

Hmmmm, you should probably watch The Decline of Western Civilization. The early LA punk scene was just as bad or worse. They had an entire crew dedicated to beating up "posers" and specifically targeted dudes with long hair, they did the exact same shit. Violence and rape were VERY common back then in the scene. Look up the Suicidal Cycos gang. Maybe where you're from it was different or you came along after things got toned down, but in all the big scenes like LA and NY it was definitely NOT all lovey-dovey and acceptance.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the fact you've had nothing but positive experiences, but your comment is coming from a very...uninformed point of view when you consider the scene on a larger scale than your own personal experience.

I wouldn't frame it so much as "You can't cancel bands for what their views were when it was somewhat acceptable" so much as "If they aren't truly hateful and grew past it" kind of deal. Remember, in their early years a lot of these bands were 14, 15. 16 year old dudes and gals. Idk about you all, but I said and did some pretty shitty things at that age that I've regretted for a very long time.

I applaud the guy because he actually became one of the most ardent anti nazi's in the uk punk scene worked with bands like chumbawumba(worked with), Magazine (worked with), cardiacs (worked with) and white town(championed them on his radio show) etc. apparently it was really heavy for him because the boneheads used to send him death threats for years etc.

One could argue that that was both the lowest or highest time of my life depending on how much you weigh nihilistic hedonism. People called The Clash punk...in my opinion they were WAY more than punk( if even punk at all aside from their views and "style." From what I've gathered punk, it's a modified version of what Spicoli said "Well Stu I'll tell you, being "punk" is not a sport, it's a way of life, it's no hobby.
