Yeah so let’s not forget what these people are. Nobody becomes that rich without destroying the lives of others and being infinitely selfish. Fuck the rich forever.
I can't hate this. He gave an artist a job, which is great. Years ago I had a master who was a sculptor, and we would work with him in his studio and follow him to places where people had commissioned sculptures. I wish there was more crazy random sculptures like this in public spaces.
Honestly? This sculpture is better than the coloniser statues everywhere, and I'd love a public space with stuff like this, that actually inspire some thought and reaction. And I do love the idea of an artist actually getting commissioned. If we're bound to the capitalist system, at least a hard-working person got paid fairly!! But yeah, a single statue for a private appreciation (except it's like, a public flex, for a guy who could very much afford to fund wellbeing causes) still isn't nearly as good as even just, art commissioned for the people, let alone the many, many things the cost of it could've funded that are literally endangering lives to go without. Basically, in this wealth gap leading to do many ruined lives of innocents, any opulent gesture from a repressive billionaire is a little sour.
Historically artists have survived on the cash from rich patrons. You get a fat paycheck so you don’t have to worry about food and bills and just make the amazing art that you do without worrying about being a salesperson and catering to the wants of potential customers who just may not get your art.
As a traditional artist, I can see how sculptors, especially those who create giant works, would really only be able to get work through rich people. That is extremely time consuming and cost demanding work. Yr average middle class person would not be able to afford or rather spend that kind of money on something so extravagant. And with AI taking so many artists jobs away, it's nice seeing traditional arts still being appreciated, whether or not it's your style.
I know I'm really late to comment and the chances are tiny that anyone seeing this will ever be in the area, but if you enjoy bizarre, random statues and ever find yourself in Eastern Finland, you simply _must_ visit the Parikkala Sculpture Park. Block off an afternoon if possible, there are well over 200 statues for you to look at. In the summer the garden is pretty magical and in the winter the snow gives the place a haunted vibe (worth freezing your butt off for a couple hours IMO). I remember how fun it was when I was a kid (I'm 38 now) and the single artist who created them all was steadily adding to the collection and we used to visit every summer (my mom's family is from the area) to see what was new.
Him bringing up ancient Rome in the caption of the statue makes so much sense. If I have to be honest the whole Roman Empire thing is giving special interest (trust me, real recognizes real). As for the statue, I don't think people should be allowed to hoard that much money in the first place. That being said, commissioning an artist for a gift for a loved one is probably the least offensive thing to do if you are rich. I'm happy that artist got the bag

honestly, i'm so down. if we're going to have billionaires, they should at least be returning to tradition and commissioning artists to contribute culture to the world. not saying that this wife statue is historic material lol, but people forget that most of the most famous works of art throughout history were commissions - art costs money!!!!
As a Musican myself I really don't want to bring back those times. I don't want to life in the palace of a Lord and compose wishy washy music to his personal liking and needs. I much rather get supported by the state or city to make art, like it is common in many parts of europe and create things, that are important to me, something that is a critique of the unbalances in our societies. I want my music to be heard and seen by normal people and not just some fancy billionaires. Btw i really don't think that this artists was dependend on the Zuck check, becausehe was presenting his work in venice of all places. @@WesternJons Yeah but the art world is an ecosystem with multiple niches in which artists can thrive. The more niches available, the more diversity of careers available for the artists. What has happened is here is fine. What you describe is also fine. Both should exist.

As to an homage to his wife I don't have an opinion. You do you bro. I'm just down for rich people actually supporting the arts. Like hey Zuck, wanna maybe spread that money around to some local, lesser known artists too? I'm sure they'd gladly make a whole gallery dedicated to her.

As an artist I really love the sculpture. it's unique and the artist is incredible. Traditional art is nearly dead, as opposed to a century ago, so bringing it back to the mainstream is something that makes me happy. I hope art like this makes a comeback. Historically, portraiture is meant to immortalize a person and commemorate their existence for many years to come. That part makes it weird considering its so grandiose lol

Out of all the weird shit about billionaires, this is some of the least weird shit. People are just choosing to be mad. These are upper middle class people at best. If I had the money maybe I'd make cool custom statues. At least he paid for art, doesn't really matter who of. I'm okay with rich people paying to get stupid art done tbh, its literally a story as old as time. God, it makes me happy that D'Angelo mentioned Mr. Beast's philanthropy as a cover ("shield") for doing shady actions behind the cameras. I tried to mention that on another video about him and no one seemed to understand this perspective 😢
I'm definitely a zuck 0 lmao. Though, as a public library worker, I'm gonna second your "coulda built a public library" approach. I just think that would have been cooler. Like naming something beautiful and ultimately good that everyone can see and appreciate all the time after your wife/partner seems more romantic to me than some metal.
I'm pretty chronically online, and still managed to not hear anything about this. He made a good point about Zucc relative to the other tech billionaire villains. Like, this is weird and dystopian for like, 2015. These days? Elon has probably managed to be this weird with more harm every week, and Zucc faded into just being the King of the Boomer AI enrichment daycare/wasteland. Tbh, billionaire gestures are always exhausting and a boring dystopia. Like, people literally can't afford housing, healthcare, to fund third spaces anymore, and he wants to drop that much on a weird and off-putting statue?
I think the big divide on this shows the changing of times. In the past, a artists made paintings, statues, stories, poems, etc about their lover/partner. It was considered “romantic” for a man to tattoo the name of his partner. I remember a lot of classical stories show their love with grand gestures like “I’ll fight a war for you”. But in the perspective of the recipient, you may feel “obligated” to return that love (for better or for worse) Nowadays, we see those gestures as “love bombing” or “impractical” or “too much”. If you’re not a big fan of your partner, but then they tattoo your name on them, it makes leaving harder or more awkward. If one of them cheats, that permanent gesture of love will feel… pretty awkward.
How does this even translate to respect? Me buying a snickers for my (imaginary) partner would be have a bigger financial impact on my life. He didn't carve it himself. He just commissioned a thing and gave it to the person he's married to. It doesn't show any more thought than that.
I agree he should definitely be sent into the sun with the other billionaires. But it's still a piece of art that a person made, and I think the sculpture is pretty cool and required a lot of skill. Zuck doesn't deserve it though, for sure.
What man? Assuming you’re referring to Julius Caesar, who didn’t actually destroy the library of Alexandria and was never an emperor, Caesar Augustus is an entirely different person.
i think his expression for love is nice. especially bc he already has a track record for liking the roman empire , he made something he is passionate about into someone he loves that’s cute
Idk it is really pretty. I really like the artist's work. But it also really doesn't matter in the long run. I hate my face so I'd hate a sculpture of myself but if someone gave me a sculpture like this of my cat I think I'd literally suffer a heart attack and die of pure joy 🤷🏻
I wonder if seeing your face in art instead of just the mirror would soften your feelings about your face. I did an experiment where I decided to work as an artists model for a year (drawing, painting and sculpture) because it was kinda my worst nightmare and I also kinda hated my face and body. It really changed my life! Hearing people speak unemotionally about my features, like in terms of shadows and light, symmetry and color theory, etc, and then seeing sO many wildLy different depictions of them just snapped something apart inside of me and I started to be able to see myself without judgement. Idk if I'm explaining it right, but I highly recommend it✌️❤️
@@sashie253I wouldn't be able to pose tbh I detest being perceived. I do love the portraits that my niece draws of me though. Especially one where I'm actually two creatures, one of which is some type of terrifying beast.
I really struggle with the notion of being perceived in real life but I’ve learned how to take really great selfies and a partner of mine made a portrait quilt of me! Completely altered how I imagined others saw me and I’ll forever be grateful for it. Perhaps if you can find a way to perceive yourself in a way you find wonderful, you’ll have an opportunity for someone you trust to see you in that way in the future ❤ Edit to add: I love that your niece gets to depict you in that way! Sorry I meant to mention it first and got carried away 😂
@@glupik1234Tbh it was very torturous for many months! I almost couldn't physically do it for so long, but that's kinda what I was trying to wrestle with so I just kept at it (plus getting paid wasn't bad either and I was broke😭) it's also helpful when I realized that mostly all the artists are in their own heads wrestling with their own insecurities at the same time I was dying inside so it all balanced out🤩
Zuck1 here. I feel like out of all the billionaire things to be mad about, this is small potatoes. It's a nice statue, it's pretty, if a little weird. Hell, I'm grateful that money is going to an artist, support the arts yay! But yeah, there are much worse things that billionaires are doing that are worth focusing on instead of this.
The fact that rich people are being congratulated for doing something that rich people have always done means that AI has brought the bar even lower somehow
I feel it's okay, he commissioned artists to make it, kinda cute. That's all I feel for the statue, and that alone. But other than that I fully don't care, I'm just entertained from watching you
Zuckerberg doing kind things for his wife and being a billionaire and therefore automatically unethical can happen in the same universe but personally I wouldn't vibe with a statue of me or paintings of myself. However, I have personally commissioned an artist to create pet portraits for gifts for others and I often tell people if I win the lottery I will get a painting inspired by "My Wife's Lover's" (a giant oil painting of a wife's 40 most favorite cats). Supporting art is good, of all the reasons a tech giant could be in the news this one is pretty nice
As you described them, I felt like I fell into all four categories simultaneously. I don't really care much, but I do kind of like the statue, but I do think it's weird, but I am glad an artist got paid, but I also can't help thinking how many artists would get paid by the National Endowment for the Arts if billionaires paid a fair share in taxes. I think the last one, Zuck 3, is where I ultimately land, which surprises me. But then I think about it even more and, like... the Caesar thing is extremely Ozymandias from _Watchmen_ coded and I have Concerns. And yeah, now I do kinda wonder if maybe he didn't do it for his wife _or_ for PR but just because it was the kind of thing an Emperor would do. So am I actually Zuck X? I never imagined “Mark Zuckerberg commissions weird turquoise statue” would cause me such internal turmoil. Thank you for this. (I did find the couples therapist who described it as a “red flag” because it was such a huge gift was pretty funny. It would for sure be a red flag if _my_ spouse bought me a seven foot statue of myself, but relative to income, I'm pretty sure her saying “you seem exhausted, let's order from the good Thai place” is probably a more lavish gift.)
No because people like to buy what they find pretty. I have a turquoise mug and 2 turquoise steel bottles (1L for at home, 560mL for the go). I have turquoise dental floss picks. And a turquoise many other things. I love the colour. Maybe this is her favourite colour, and that's why her husband picked it for the statue.🎉
@@sabiha.sayeedexactly, I love everything in black and white, and my mom has a very simple color palette of deep navy blues, silver, light light blues, and the occasional dark cool purple or periwinkle. Some people just like a certain color.

Zucc X, being obsessed with ancient rome has a weird flavour to it in and of itself but with zucc being zucc and also a billionaire it's just kinda worse. The guy is planning something, and I don't know if it's something bad or just something obscenely weird.
I think he's just a white guy whose money and power has allowed him to be a little too bought into the classic white guy obsession with Greek mythology - not the Olympian Gods kind of mythology, but the "Greece was full of hella straight warrior poets who exude virtuous masculinity, that's so me" kind of mythology *about* Greeks.
It sounds like an autistic hyperfixation so IDK. If I had money I’m pretty sure my hyperfixations would come out in weird (but hopefully awesome) ways.
Can we appreciate how Dangelo picks his aesthetics. I discovered him when his main channel had the universe theme and here we are with the ancient history class theme. Preach Prof. Wallace, we are listening.
If I came into Zuck money and there was a sculptor whose art I really enjoyed, the first thing I’m doing is getting a beautiful statue of my partner made. The beauty of the person I love so much deserves to be immortalized for decades to come, hopefully within museums. (Not to say Zuck’s wife statue is beautiful to me per se, but I’m not knocking it if that’s what the guy enjoys.)
Listen some of the modern art features we have displayed on museums today was due to some rich aristocrat commissioning an artist to make of a loved one. While i may not jump for this one, i will say this is following along that line of tradition. Think about it. Every painting in a museum now was commissioned
6:55 I’ve been watching your videos for a few years now and honestly finding out how passionate you are about ATLA makes you even more lovable than you already were. If you ever did make a video series like this I would absolutely watch it more than once

@@lasagnahog7695 i love this question, and i probably don't have an answer for it. i certainly don't have one prepared. but off the dome real quick, i guess i believe rarely can bad come from another artwork existing. unless the art is explicitly harmful, which has historical precedent to be concerned with and look down on as Bad (think antisemitic propaganda in WWII or a great deal of political cartoons), perhaps we should either welcome a statue like this with indifference or warmth in some way? though on the other hand, it bears considering that in a case like this we can't separate the existence of this piece with the very nasty man who wanted it made for a woman who is obviously complicit in his crimes, so you could consider me in all of the categories that were discussed. i hate it, i love it, i wish it didn't exist, i want more of it, i wish i had never seen it, and i hope it stays up and finds its own value. is it just me, or does it sometimes feel so complicated to love everything we create so passionately? i've resolved that i'll live long enough to see if it's worth it.
Honestly, I’m between not caring and thinking it was sweet. We don’t have statue money, but if we did and my husband did this for me I’d think it was incredibly thoughtful and I’d love it. Heck, if he commissioned someone to draw me I’d be so thrilled. I feel like people only care because it’s Zuck, if it was any other person, no one would care. I’m happy for her and I think he’s being sweet.
as someone who did rome in high school, and is doing a classics degree rn because of how obsessed i got with them, i can say i completely understand the roman republic/empire brain rot. those petty guys get into your head like crazy. but it's one thing to post cicero/antony fanfic on ao3, it's a different story when you have the power and influence to actually colonise the land on indigenous people.

honestly, i'm so down. if we're going to have billionaires, they should at least be returning to tradition and commissioning artists to contribute culture to the world. not saying that this wife statue is historic material lol, but people forget that most of the most famous works of art throughout history were commissions - art costs money!!!!
Billionaires are just paying other rich people to make art without a bigger purpose.
@@WesternJons Yeah but the art world is an ecosystem with multiple niches in which artists can thrive. The more niches available, the more diversity of careers available for the artists. What has happened is here is fine. What you describe is also fine. Both should exist.
@@WesternJonssome artists wouldn't like the idea and some would.
As a work of art I really like it. If I saw it in a museum or sculpture garden I'd spend a decent amount of time looking at it because it's really well done.
I just want to add something completely random: thank you for subtitling your videos. I appreciate you.

Out of all the weird shit about billionaires, this is some of the least weird shit. People are just choosing to be mad. I'm definitely a zuck 0 lmao. Though, as a public library worker, I'm gonna second your "coulda built a public library" approach. I just think that would have been cooler.
@@lilpetz500 like yeah sure but don't read the stuff Mark Zuckerberg does to have a nice house in Hawaii, it might contradict your perception ;)
But in the perspective of the recipient, you may feel “obligated” to return that love (for better or for worse)
Nowadays, we see those gestures as “love bombing” or “impractical” or “too much”. If you’re not a big fan of your partner, but then they tattoo your name on them, it makes leaving harder or more awkward. If one of them cheats, that permanent gesture of love will feel… pretty awkward.
Imagine you come home and your partner has a 7ft tall sculpture of you being devoured by the terminator. That’s gotta be some type of threat.
The fact that a man is being hyped for "respecting" the woman he married and had children with is preposterous
i get what you mean and you are totally correct, but he literally made a statue of her.... this is far beyond respect. this is like, worship. maybe
That's okay, he loves his wife and she's his muse
I didn't even know he had a wife and children lol
the statue is beautiful tho, props to the artist
How does this even translate to respect? Me buying a snickers for my (imaginary) partner would be have a bigger financial impact on my life. He didn't carve it himself. He just commissioned a thing and gave it to the person he's married to. It doesn't show any more thought than that.

Perhaps if you can find a way to perceive yourself in a way you find wonderful, you’ll have an opportunity for someone you trust to see you in that way in the future ❤

I feel it's okay, he commissioned artists to make it, kinda cute. That's all I feel for the statue, and that alone. But other than that I fully don't care, I'm just entertained from watching you
exactly. i think it’s kinda cute but i don’t really care at all. they can do what they want when it comes to this situation.
Lorde said it best in her song Still Sane: “Only bad people live to see their likeness set in stone.”

Why do you have to love or hate it? There's more art in the world than you can possibly ever think about. Why put any thought into this?
