George Lucas Reveals Power Levels of Luke Vader Palpatine Obi-Wan

- In Star Wars, midichilorians were the closest thing we had to power levels. Anakin, as a 9 year old, were over 20,000, more than master Yoda himself. The prequels were the first time we entered a measurable state of the force, now while midichlorians aren’t to be mistaken for one’s full on power levels, they are an abstraction of one’s potential should they train in the force. Now back in the 80’s when esb was being written, George Lucas actually had devised a power ranking system out of 10 for obi-wan, Luke, and the emperor.
So as we can see, Luke Skywalker, is a level 2, Obi-Wan with all of his training from qui-gon, Yoda and more is only a 6. This means during the prequels, he was probably a 4, considering the last 20 years he didn’t learn all that much more when it came to his training. Unless, of course, George completely abolished this level system in his mind, and just went straight to the midichlorians. The interesting thing about obi-wan is that he had the poorest connection to the force of all jedi, he was an embarrassment. Both in canon and legends. In fact, in Canon, Qui-Gon in the novel master and apprentice, talks about how Obi-Wan is so far behind compared to where he was at the same age. Basically calling Obi-Wan useless. So for Obi-Wan to be as powerful as the Emperor now, really is a testament to how hard he practiced and trained. Of course, these power levels shouldn’t be as theorized and analyzed as I’m doing now, as they are outdated and clearly something George established for the originals and possibly abolished going beyond that to the prequels, but it is interesting to know. Does this mean that Yoda in the prequels was a level 6, and Obi-Wan was a level 4? Meaning Anakin was also a level 4 while being so much younger, putting in the effect of his many thousands of more midichlorians compared to the rest? This would have given anakin more of a potential to reach a higher level faster than others. Like giving Anakin a higher iq, which wouldn’t necessarily mean he’s smarter than his masters, unless he studied, in which case if he did, he would destroy all of them. So we could assume the rate at which anakin developed his abilities were maybe 2 to 3 times as fast as others who were more average or slightly above even.
With Vader being a 4, this is indicative, I think, of his lowered power state that George always talked about after losing to obi-wan. George said that once he lost to obi-wan he’d never reach his full power, and be only 80% as powerful as the emperor, who was a level 6, about to become a level 10.
The massive jump to level 10 from 6 meant that he was about to learn some crazy new ability in the short time span from episode 4 to 6. What he could learn, well it’s never discussed I don’t think, but I could rule out the ability to learn lightning, as originally, George wanted Luke to use lightning against Vader, as well as Vader to use lightning against obi-wan in their fight. I think the idea of the emperor getting ready to jump to an immortal power level of 10 and the heroes had to beat the clock so he didn’t get there would have been a bit too comical for me. I like the idea that Sidious always harnessed the power of a 10 and it wasn’t his power that needed to be matched, but the power of love that Vader showed for his son which beat Sidious once and for all. To show that you can change your ways no matter how evil you have become and the horrible things you’ve done, that it’s never too late to change, and in the end, the power of love triumphs over all evil, no matter the power, which in this case it did. Vader saved Luke in a sacrificial last effort and fulfilled the Jedi prophecy of bringing balance to the force.

I like that Obi-Wan isn't the strongest in the Force but has his hard work, experience, and his wit to make him the better warrior than Anakin on Mustafar. I think they both knew Anakin was stronger in the Force, but Anakin had a tendency to be overconfident and Obi-Wan knew that. Obi-Wan had experience, clarity of thought, and knew Anakin better than Anakin knew himself. The fact Obi-Wan wins against someone much more powerful than himself, that he theoretically should have lost against, makes me like Obi-Wan that much more.
Correct. While Obi is not super powerful, he is a very smart fighter, which is why PL alone do not determine a right. However, saying he was more powerful than Palp and Vader is just ridiculous
Indeed.
overconfidence and arrogance is often anakins downfall. he overestimated his abilities and lost his arm to Dooku, and then later gets completely owned by Obi wan

Also, according to George, Luke was supposed to be the strongest Force user, attaining the power Anakin could have had, and thus more powerful at his peak, than Sidious at his peak. Which is why I scoff at those who say Luke is OP in Legends, when that's just what he was supposed to be. Not the lame wuss who got beaten by Rey, who had ZERO training, and who later died from a Force holo.
Judas priest I hate the ST films.
I don't like TLJ either but Luke didn't lose to Rey. He was in control and backed down to deflate the situation. He tagged her with the staff quite easily. Luke was fearful of Rey's mental state and where that could lead her, not of Rey being a direct danger to him.
@@countryman032 She surprised him, and knocked him down, because he's such a loser in the Force by that point.
Do not invoke Judas Priest's name in vain
Why does everyone assume that he Died? From what I remember he managed to sit up after he collapsed then he simply disappeared with a smile on his face after watching the sunset which doesn't necessarily mean that he died, he could have simply chosen to merge himself with the force.
@@WedgeOfSpite He was plenty powerful enough to play with Kylo Ren at the end and made him look like a complete tool where as Rey could barely beat Kylo in every encounter. the whole plot was absolute Crap. Bye the way Luke did not fall when Rey was attacking him he cushioned himself using the force if you look carefully. After all we've seen of the emperor in movies, shows, comics, to say Obi-wan is on the same level is just insane
@jaba literally everything. Kinda crazy to think that all of events in star wars was orchestred by papa palps. Besides, I think that not seeing Palpatines true power is more mysterious than seeing it.
Well he became a force ghost. In a fight he couldnt last a minute against palpatine tho.
That’s a really cool thing about Starkiller and Luke. I never played those games, so to hear he would be of equal power to Luke is impressive.
That's actually kinda a false statement while starkiller was insanely powerful his midi-chlorian count was only 22,000 which is slightly over Palpatines Luke's was 40,000 being the same as Anakin's in legends Luke has done some insane shit from pushing and moving a black hole to Force projecting an entire Battleship fleet and becoming one with the force while still alive to defeating Force Demi Gods and powerful sith entities

One of the things I love about Disney canon is that they gave Vader a huge buff
Yeah. He was way too much nerfed

If Anakin killed Obi Wan in revenge of the Sith then He would have been Level 20 by the time of the Originals
Actually since he has the ouble of potential of palpatine and palpatine was a 6 on his way to become a 10 in the OT , I guess anakin would be a 12 on his way to become a 20 ?
Speaking of Obi-Wan, Reath Silas is currently facing the same problem: fighting twice as hard as anyone else to become a Jedi, despite his weak connection to the Force

I really wish they would turn the force unleashed into a movie. I love it!!!!
Not until Disney sell tge rights to a studio with a clue.
It’s revealed in Star Wars The Lightsaber Collection Book on pages 98 and 99 which talks about Darth Sidious,( a.k.a Emperor Palpatine) it’s revealed by stunt coordinator Nick Gillard “On The Attack of the Clones, I had to give them levels,” he explained “Sidious is a level nine. [In Revenge of the Sith] Obi is eight-he’s moved up-Anakin is a nine; Mace is a nine,[and] Yoda is a nine. They’re up with Sidious.”
1:45 It’s really crazy to hear that George Lucas originally considered Obi-Wan and Palpatine to be on the same power level during The Empire Strikes Back. However, Obi-Wan did say he would become more powerful as a Force ghost.
Mad it to the end! Love all the work you do, I would love the opportunity to meet you one day.
My dad was born in a extremely regressive family and at the age of 56 he finally watched all of Star Wars and loved it. Your videos sparked his interest and for that I thank you.
If obi wan was a 4 during the prequels and dooku EASY clapped him and anakin and hold up against yoda... what the hell is dooku?
Yeah, that’s confusing. Because Dooku dispatched Obi-wan pretty easily in both fights during the prequels. Anakin held up better, even though he got his forearm chopped off in the first fight.
Maybe that's why Obi-Wan took so long to power up: he never sacrificed his forearm. Everyone else who did seems to have made massive jumps in power afterwards. Dooku has trouble with Anakin later and Vader with Luke the second time around.
@@nate8604 obi wan is used as a plot device in both dooku fights, he’s so easily dispatched because the story needs Anakin on his own with dooku both times to progress anakins story. I put it down to bad writing and directing. Obi wan is much better than the dooku fights would have you believe. IMO.
@@robp5141 maybe, Obi-Wan did beat Darth Maul a couple of times. At one point, he killed him the first go around, which I thought was bad writing since we first got introduced to him in Phantom Menace. And Obi-Wan did kill General Grievous. So he does have some unique kills under his belt.
I think this is not a representation of power level necessarily as it is styles. Dooku's blade skill is simply that much higher and is a great counter for Obi-wan's defensive saber arts. That's why Anakin holds up a bit better but yes it is still a good question of what Dooku would be considered, probably a 5 closer to the older obi-wan and emperor if I had to guess
You show true great understanding of Star Wars here. Soo cool
When a power 4 meet a power 6: "your power are weak old man". Yes sure...
When I was younger, vader was my favorite, then I got older and yoda was my favorite, but now looking back, the best one has always been Obe. He has always been the underdog, stayed on the right path, and overcame critical points in his path. Obi is the most overlooked force user.
Me in RPG’s. OMG I leveled up. In a level 3 Jedi!
I feel compelled to listen to Back to the Future's "The Power of Love" after this ;P
I remember in the behind the scenes of Revenge of the Sith, Nick Gillard was referring to a level system of relative power for each of the Jedi.
This isn't verbatim, but I remember that Anakin was referred to as having gone up a level during the course of the film, from 8 to 9, which Nick described as basically being the dark side and that he had surpassed Obi-Wan in raw power.
How this works for everyone else like, Mace Windu, Palpatine, Yoda etc. is a bit unclear, but we can assume that Palpatine is a 9 and Mace and Yoda are both 8s.
Yes, but I think he was referring more to the ability with the lightsaber rather than the power of force.
Yes I remember this too. Anakin and obi wan are level at 8, with Anakin moving up to a 9 just due to the influence of the dark side. Anakin wasn’t that much more powerful than obi wan in their fight, if any.
@@robp5141 Correct. The boost Anakin got was minimal and due to his inexperience with the dark side, he remained evenly matched with Obi-Wan.
I made it to the end of it, your videos calm me down and help me distress after a long day, so thank you!
Honestly when the originals came out you thought that Vader was more powerful then The Emperor. All you knew was that The Emperor had force lighting.
No. Vader asked Luke for his help to overthrow the Emperor, implying Vader was not as strong as the emperor.
The fact he serves under Tarkin in ep. 4 also shows he is not as powerful. He is given his fleet in TESB but that is his task set by the Emperor. To find the rebels and then trap Luke. Clearly the Emperor already sees Luke as Vader's replacement, and Vader probably knows this as well.
Awesome explanation...how palps was so entranced in the darkside "ether", he couldnt even see it coming even as a level 10!!! Love will triumph!!!
So Anakin's power level is over 9000!!!⚡🐉
Love the content brother, keep pushing forward!

My favorite nuggets of star wars backstory and lore always ends up coming directly from George Lucas. I love hearing him talk about his own story.
Vader is my favorite sith because unlike the others, his hatred was focused on the only thing in the universe that he couldn’t destroy, himself. Every day he had to live with the knowledge that he was responsible for the death of his wife and presumably his children, of course this was nothing more than a lie from Sideous to wrack him with guilt but it worked. Obviously because his anguish was endless his anger was endless too, i believe this led to his longevity.

Obi-Wan’s power is like Might Guy’s from Naruto. Not a lot of natural talent, but his extreme hard work and discipline turned him into a force that rivals some of the most powerful folks around.
So basically:
- young Obi was 4 (based on the Duel on Mustafar); old Obi is 6
- Palpatine was 6 but on the way to 10
- Yoda was also 6 in the Prequels (based on his duel vs Palpatine), and possibly achieved 10 later (based on his powers seen in The Last Jedi).
- Anakin/Vader was 4 but was potentially 12 (based on George Lucas stating he was potentially twice as strong as Palpatine)
- Luke was 2 when he faced Vader on Cloud City but arguably achieved 6 in Return of the Jedi (based on 1. the fact that he is able to hide his presence from Palpatine's perception 2. the fact that Palpatine said in Empire strikes back that young Skywalker could destroy the Sith 3. his badass hallway scene); he possibly achieved 10 later (based on never seen before Force projection through the galaxy in TLJ). But he was potentially 11 or 12 (based on George Lucas stating that with Luke, Palpatine would have had a more primo version of Anakin).

Most fans have a very superficial understanding of things and don't put too much logic or any kind of extrapolation into their thinking... which is fine, what ever. It's a story and different people get different things out of it, which is the way it's suppose to be.
However, you display a very good, well rounded understanding of Star Wars in that your use of logic where applicable is well.... logical, and because of this you are able to make some very interesting statements and conclusions of a few relatively complex ideas and theories that have a very interesting (dare I say it?) "point of view".
Unfortunately it seams not that many Star Wars fans (or professed fans I should say) understand how much Heart Lucas put into his characters and stories. The Heart and love, and broken hearts and absence of love are the driving forces of the entire story. Not that many people understand that. You however have a good grasp of it.
The person second only to George Lucas who understands Star Wars is Dave Filoni. On Disney Plus right now there is a series called >Disney Gallery STAR WARS: The Mandalorian
Hey, do you know when the idea of Vader and palps being called sith came in?
My respect, and love for the character of Obi-Wan increased tremendously. Works his ass off, despite being bad at everything, and becomes a Jedi Master? Equivalent in power, at one point, to Yoda himself? Yeah, I love that. The low class being stronger then the elite.
Nah, lets be clear and honest here. Palpatine and yoda both where top of the notch for sith and jedi standards overall.
If we take full potential... well anakin hit that on mortis, and we know he is an 20/10, 10 being palpatine and yoda, AT least twice as powerfull (stated by sidious himself "vader will become twice as powerfull as any of us" when he battles yoda)
Now, without mortis conection to the force, Anakin has no way to unlock his full potential without the right amount of training (who knows, may be he has no limits, if he trains all his life he might have been able to achieve REAL inmortality and UN LIMITED PAWAAAAAAAAAAR)
Still, anakin managed to defeat easily Dooku, who fodderized obi wan, not once but twice, in seconds. Anakin on aotc lasted longer than Obi wan, when he was just a padawan. Anakin as a jedi knight left dooku with no chance in elegance. Dooku himself, being 2nd or 3rd (depends on each one criteria for the matter) best lightsaber duelist in the galaxy, being able to spar with yoda and windu to stalemates, daily. So anakin stomping him, leaves him AT LEAST 3rd best jedi lightsaber duelist. Now, if we count sidious, master of all forms and the strongest sith that has EVER BEEN, Anakin is 4th, being equal to windu, and a little weaker than yoda and sidious.
Anakin is comfortably saying, a 8/10 in revenge of the sith. Obi wan is likely a 6.5 but this 6.5 has a trump card, knowing everything about anakin, and Soresu, designed to outlast any other form as long as the user has a better shape and mental state than the enemy. Which, he had vs anakin. Buffing him to anakins 8, and anakin being mental fucked up, well... he tryed, and we all know what happened.
No Anakin is a 10 so as Sidious 10 is the highest.
@@xdevilxx-_-demons3263 And yes, i asume u refer to ros anakin, because if u say mortis anakin is equal to sidious, is straight up wrong. Sidious, is a 10 on a scaling on dueling abilities at that time. But to say that sidious is MORE powerful than the son and the daughter together, is just wrong. The son is the embodiment of the dark side, i think that the embodiment of the dark side is stronger than its strongest user.
And anakin tamed both, child and daughter. Its natural to say that this potential unlocked anakin (even if it lasted 30 seconds or so) is the strongest character we know of in the whole verse, sayd the father, who was equal to him.
@mufaso sends thanks mate. Glad that someone actually took his time to read it.
"And nowwh, young Skajjwaalka, you will die."
Diehyyy
I think in the mandalorian Luke he's a 8
nah, he a 4/5
@@MarceloHenrique-zs7fe no
I would say Obi-Wan learned more about the force and himself during his time on tatooine.
Please react to the snyder cut trailer that just came out.
Am flabbergasted, how's that for a reaction 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He did
@@tbnratlangamer242 Another one just came out
Superman OP 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Vader a 4? 😐
I made it to the end. Keep up the great work my dude. Love your content.
Are you gonna do a video on Gina Corano?
I love these videos and your voice is awesome to listen to
so what you're telling me is Revan was a level 12 at his peak and Vader was 80% as powerful as Sidious while only having a torso... NOICE!
Made it to the end, great vid!
I think George scrapped this whole idea, and in the new Disney canon I'm pretty sure Vader was more powerful after his defeat on Mustafar. In the comics, Vader is extremely powerful and maybe more powerful than the emperor.
It probably is more like:
Anakin at full potential (mastering light and dark side): 10
The Father: 9
The Son & Daughter: 8.5
Emperor: 8.25
Luke (in Last Jedi and Mandalorian): 8
Vader: 7.5 (8 with force powers and 7 with suit vulnerabilities)
Yoda: 7
Mace Windu: 7
Kylo Ren: 7
Anakin (before defeat/still not trained that much): 6.5
Count Dooku: 6.25
Obi Wan: 6
Luke (in original trilogy): 6
Rey: 6
Ashoka (years later): 6
General Grievous: 5.5
Average Jedi: 3
Love these long ones
