Reacting to Anakin's Power Level Reveal in Revenge of the Sith Bonus DVD

- Hey and welcome back to Star Wars Theory, today we're going to cover this special part of The Revenge of the Sith bonus DVD that covers the stunts and BTS with George Lucas, Nick Gillard, Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Samuel L Jackson, Ian McDiarmid and more.
Something I found very fun to discuss here was the snippet regarding Anakin's power level at the end of the film. Back in the 80's, George Lucas (reference The Making of Return of the Jedi/ESB/ANH books) mentioned how Luke was a level 2, Vader a 4, Obi-Wan a 6 and the Emperor an 8 (or something like that) in terms of power. So I feel that now we can a little insight on what Anakin's level would be on that scale that George Lucas made up. At the very least, it's pretty fun to discuss.

Hearing anything about Hayden and anakin just makes me feel more excited for kenobi with Hayden as Vader
Same
@@bmanultimategaming18 yeah can’t wait to see him and Ewan again on screen hoping the show is good
@Darth Nutsack I’d be ok with a clone wars flashback or like “dark side cave vision” with him but I don’t want him and Obi wan fighting in the flesh that would break continuity
Obi wan is probably going to go on a similar quest like yoda did in clone wars. He will probably have another confrontation with Vader but it will be in his own mind as confronting his demons.
@@KABZProductions that sounds pretty great
We do know that his powers have doubled since the last time he’s met count.
😂 right
Twice the sand, double the high ground
I sense great fear in you Skywalker that line was cut also just because there are two of you do not assume you have the advantage that line was also cut but is shown in the video game in the scene
And that the count had been looking forward to it
@C man Man I wonder if any characters in the films can be considered 10s. Maybe Yoda Sidious and mace
I never thought Hayden was a bad Anakin or Vader. He was the reason Anakin is my favorite Jedi of all time. I’m so happy he’s returning!

I cannot wait to see Hayden as Anakin/Vader again. Seeing him on the big screen is gonna make me feel like a little boy again. Kid me was obsessed with prequel Anakin so this means a lot.
I think the power levels are great, especially for reference. Though, I think we often forget that being the strongest or the most skilled doesn't guarantee victory in a fight. It just increases the likelihood.
Hayden and ewan are so goodlooking. They haven't aged at all it's amazing. Can't wait for Kenobi show
I mean the look good for their age but they’ve aged at least a good 5 years since 2003-2004
It's hilarious though. Ewan now actually is starting to look like Sir Alec Guinness did in the OT.

Ian Mcdiarmid right at the end, I felt electricity in my spine!
I remember having the bonus dvd for Revenge of The Sith & it was sick to the core, this video brought so much nostalgia to me thanx Theory
I wish they would bring Nick Gillard back for the Kenobi series!
Yeah he did awesome w the fights in the prequels
Oh boy you couldn’t of been more right
Anakin was a level 9 along with sidious and yoda. Mace was a level 8. I believe Nick Gillard said Anakin was on the higher end of level 9 as a lightsaber duellist.
Wouldn’t Mace also be a 9 tho? He beat Sidious because of vapaad but still, Mace is always shown being at a level higher than that of Obi (imo) and if Obi is an 8 mace is for sure a 9.

The behind the scenes adds a lot of beauty to the movies in my opinion.
I binge watched these when they came out when I was 16. I was also at the midnight showing in Denver, Colorado in a blue bath robe and my Master Replicas Anakin lightsaber. Those were some great times!
Damn you had the master replicas saber that’s amazing! I’m jelly

never stop these bro!!! thank you from the bottom of my heart
Jedi can get to the same level as sith, it's just that the sith (darkside) is quicker.
But with the quickness of getting there there's arrogance and a feeling of invulnerability (from the power) which ironically can lead to mistakes that "lower power" Jedi can take advantage of.
Just my take
I believe that with the "power levels", he was talking about lightsaber skill. I've read or heard this somewhere else and it also said Anakin, Yoda, Mace, and Palpatine are all level 9s and Obi-Wan is a level 8. And I'm pretty sure that when he said the difference between 8 and 9 is the dark side, he meant specifically for Anakin. He then went on, to say that if you obtain power too fast, you're gonna get in trouble and that they were working that into Anakin's downfall. Anakin either went from 8 to 9 too fast, or he just "leveled up" too fast during his life as a jedi as a whole.
When anakin went from an 8 to a 9 way to fast, it’s like rushing your town hall in clash of clans
@C man Man what
He wasn't saying Jedi can't go above level 8, he was saying that Anakin used the dark side as a short cut to skip some levels. Basically mirroring what Yoda said in Empire. Basically Kenobi was at a lvl 8 and had worked hard to get there, Anakin before the Dark side was lets say a 6.5 as he was still growing. When he went to the dark side he jumped to 9 but because he lacked the discipline and training he didn't think about the power of the High Ground.
This is how I got into the behind the scenes works of films in general is by watching all these special features a lot of people don't do that and some of my friends think I'm crazy even some of my family thinks I'm crazy for doing that but that's a visual representation as George George puts it to where it gives me an idea of how everything works and it makes me more fascinating anymore appreciative and I love the film even more episode 3 and it's just features just floored and captivated me and I washed it and do watch it over and over and over and over and over again even the within a minute compilation talking about the final battle which is phenomenally done and it's just perfect representation of how I see Star Wars and how I see filmmaking in Star Wars and how I see Star Wars the fan and now is he Star Wars in general this is perfection at least a represent if perfect
15:41 i'm just dying 🤣😂 each time i hear Samuel screaming in pain ^^
I thought he had forgotten about this! So happy the series continues!!!
God. the revenge of the sith had such a fire cover. My childhood 🥺
This has always been one of my favorite segments for the Making of Revenge of the Sith material. In terms of Anakin and Obi-Wan, I don’t know about Lucas’ words from the original films, but I feel that with Nick it really shows the progression in overall ability that Anakin achieved over the course of the Clone Wars.
And I think that we really forget that he was just finishing his teenage years the first time he faced Dooku on Geonosis, which is why here in Episode 3 he so thoroughly achieves a victory. Arguably his performance against Dooku in Episode 2 was already superior to Obi-Wan’s. So here he’s much, much better all around. Then there’s his own words of “my powers have doubled” lol which yeah are arrogant, but also probably accurate.
Then, of course, Obi-Wan is just like Anakin; a war hero and Jedi Council member now who is at the peak of his abilities. At this point Obi-Wan has for sure surpassed his own Master, Qui-Gon, and through fighting the same battles as Anakin over so many years has managed to make his own style more fluid and complete. So, we can see how they mirror one another while still taking different paths. And then the idea that the Dark Side fills Anakin with maybe this newfound power or ability to let himself go, which leads to his downfall via a lack of control, is just excellent Imo. Because that of course brings us back to where Vader was during the original films. This kind of brutal but effective giant who doesn’t move as fast per se, but is still super effective at what he does.
Love the come back of these videos man ❤️
On the he went to the dark side and that’s why he became a 9 it kind of makes sense because Windu uses his lightsaber form which is him channeling the dark side energy from his opponent and putting it back out in his aggressive style which is why he is a 9 or 10. And Yoda’s species has shown a more natural connection to the force and that he has studied the dark side which is why he’s probably a level 10. Obi has tapped into the dark side before which is why he was probably a high 8 or 9 in the RoTS. And if you’re wondering I mean his fight with Maul in TPM, if you look into it he taps into his anger and hate for Maul and switches his combat style from defensive to very aggressive which in my opinion is because he taps into the dark side through his emotions. Good video man.
This is where the fun begins!
Ive always thought and said to certain people that obi one wouldnt be able to beat anakin if he wasnt so angry and confused. I dont remember where it talked about it, but they said anakin was moving through the ranks very quickly and obi one wasnt around for any of it
It all makes sense to me. Palpatine himself said to Yoda, his new apprentice will be (when fully committed to the dark side) even more powerful than either of them. So emperor being an 8, just as Yoda, except a bit more powerful because he is using the dark side. Anakin in his prime IS literally the chosen one, as confirmed by The Clone Wars. The Father wanted him to control and balance an entire pocket universe with his powers. Being a 9 is not surprising to me, honestly. Also surpassing obi-wan capped at 8 in his prime, makes perfect sense.
Obi Wan then regressed back to 6 in his isolation and old age, while Vader being half machine is quite fitting to be 4.5 or half of his prime. Also at that stage Palpatine deliberately downgraded his suit making him a straight 4. All pieces literally fit perfectly. Mace arguably could have been up to 8.5 because he was tapping into the dark, walking a fine line. He also stood toe to toe with Palpatine, for a while at least, on the other hand we have seen Palpatine single handedly obliterating Maul and Savage together with ease. Oh and 3 other masters in just a few seconds.
If Anakin was fit to control a force bound universe, just imagine the power gap and level of a Palpatine at 10. That would be insane.
I would add, Palpatine KNEW Anakin in his prime could kill him at any time he wished, but he was controlling and manipulating him emotionally and was too important for him. Anakin was too attached not just to Padme, but to the Chancellor as he essentially was his mentor and a big father figure. Anakin would never strike him down. Once Vader took over however he never stood a chance anymore, so he had no choice but to accept his fate.
If you're going by legends, then yes, that's more or less how it goes. However the current canon has done a 180 on several details and made it so Anakin isn't nearly as all-powerful as he was implied to be originally. He's nowhere close to Yoda and Palpatine, and after being rebuilt as Vader, he becomes more powerful than he was before.
@@thewarner2139 This was George's Star Wars. I don't accept disney bullshit. Their shit can have any label it's not Star Wars. So yeah.
I have these as well! Loved watching the proces of how they made the movies. Almost as exiting as watching the movies😅
So glad this is back,, this great seeing Theory reaction cant wait for the next one
I think you're reading too much into the level thing. He isn't a lore master, he is just the stunt choreographer, that is just his way of make sense of it in his head I think.
Anyone Excited for Hayden's Return to the
V a d e r character.
This Brings back to the good ole days when Starwars was Cool.
Anakin was a level 9
It's just he wasn't Trained to harness that Power,he was high on Power, just was unable to wield that Power to his advantage, Unfortunately
This is gonna sound weird but I just decided to watch all of your bonus DVD vids. Actually just got done today while doing school work. And right after I finish I noticed you posted another one😂😂
Here is an elaboration: *"On Attack of the Clones, I had to give them levels," he says. "Sidious is a level nine[out of ten]. On this film, Obi is eight-he's moved up-Anakin is a nine; Mace is a nine, Yoda is a nine. They're up with Sidious.*
*Once you get to eight, you have a Pandora's box. You could go any way with it. The way not to go is the dark side. But it would tempt you, because that would jump you right past the others. So you need to arrive at level eight at the right age-not as young as Anakin. That young, the dark side is just too tempting."*
- The Making of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, page 133
So the examples Nick Gillard gave have less to do with the characters "power level" and more so their skills with lightsabers as compared to one another. It also has nothing to do with Lucas' "level" system while making the OT, which by this point has become outdated and a bit redundant.
I'm guessing the numbers he's talking about in this film are his own relative ones for the film alone.
Just so he has a power scale to go by and George may have given him this one for ROTS.
So for this one for example: he says Obi is an 8, Ani is a 9, which makes Yoda a 10, and Palps seemingly a 10.125 judging by their fight lol
I miss these videos so much! Love you theory! :)
I just realized that Nick Gillard is Cin Drallig! HOW DID I NEVER NOTICE THIS BEFORE
the choreographer for the lightsaber duels being the Battlemaster of the Jedi Order, ain't that something
Regards the power level points at the end. Dont forget that the duration of revenge of the sith in time is around a year long because of padme's pregnancy and such so his level rapidly progressing from like 6 1/2 to a 9 is a real quick thing. Nice point
I suspect they using concept of Level to measure different things: George may have been referring to [Force] Power or Threat Level. Whereas Nick Gillard is most likely referring to a measure of overall skill and ability level (like an RPG character in KOTOR or SW-TOR).
love it, glad ya back doing these :)
There is a moment in windu vs palpatine duel when u can clearly see its not Ian but a stuntman. Its when windu kicks Emperor and hes on the floor. Nice video.
I watched these SO MUCH when I was wrong, this is what got me into cinema in college hehe
Love your videos man, keep up the good content!
I have those exact dvd discs but glad I get to watch yours. Don’t wanna break someting as old as me
Love how you compare your daily life with Star Wars, Theory. 😅 simply the best

You rock man, love the videos.
I was wondering what happened to this series!! Thanks so much for picking it back up Theory, I love nerding out on this stuff vicariously through you
and holy god was it an incredible featurette. Level 9 Anakin. Insane.
We finally got more I’ve been craving this broo
a akin imo was a a high 4 or a 5-5.5 in attack of the clones, then he was a 7.5-8 in revenge of the sith. “my power has doubled since the last time we met count.” then he went to a 9 to quickly which was his downfall, he couldn’t handle all that power that young.
Regardless of people not liking the prequels they were my favorite and I’m really happy to see Hayden and Ewan come back
Finally I’ve been waiting for this moment all my life!
It's "I've been looking forward to this!"
Nobody:

got a new acc and just found you again, LOVE the anakin powerscalings. my favourite character!
Bro I love and have missed these!!!!! Yahoo let's do this. I'm so friggin excited for the Kenobi show.
I miss these videos and this type of content so much! Thanks theory!
Also, I'm in the middle of an audiobook called Master and Apprentice.
I am enjoying it, nicely.
It's got Qui-gon and Obi in it and it takes place a bit before The Phantom Menace and goes into Qui-gon's past w/ Dooku a little, another apprentice that Dooku had besides Qui-gon, and the dynamic of Qui-gon's relationship w/ Obi, along w/ exploring how Qui-gon knows about the prophecy of the chosen one 🙊
You may like it, Theory if you haven't sampled it yet 👍
I grew up with prequels, I was born in 2002 and I don’t remember life without Star Wars (we have these old bonus disks💃🏻) and I never knew people hated on Hayden until the last few years when people started saying hey wait a minute he was good and I was like ok but since when was he ever considered bad😂
I like these behind the scenes videos you do
I might of heard or remembered George say something about Anakin being a level 7, but never put it together until what you said about the 1 to 10 system.
I have these DVDs and I've watched the bonus features a million times!
I never knew that there was a number system involved in the production but I can see that this was very well represented in the Vader vs obi wan mustifar sequence , my favourite moment of that battle was Vaders leap to avoid death from the lava falls. For me that moment wonderfully demonstrated vader rise in power from the dark side as if that had been any other jedi they would have died. The huge distance and tiny landingpoint while force shielding from the incredible lava heat perfectly demonstrated that number 9.
I really enjoy these Theory... Would you consider doing these live stream...?
I think moving from level 8 to level 9 it’s about controlling the dark side, understanding it’s power but not succumbing to it
Bro you crack me up. Lol. “These can be found on the DVD’s” 😂😂 thanks for the video my man ❄️💯
George created the number system and is still using it in the PT.
“The fighting has evolved in these last three movies considerably," says Gillard. "George Lucas works on a system of levels. So, on The Phantom Menace Obi-Wan would have been like a level six or seven.”
- Homing Beacon Interview
lol, that should be the basis for the power levels of the franchise. Not the inconsistent and terrible scaling in the sequels.
Silverhand here....this is beautiful
Congrats to anybody who is early and who found this comment useful

I don't know if I got it right, but it seems that Anikan levelled up from 8 to 9 through the darkside, which is like a shortcut insofar as it gives you a "boost". But it doesn't mean that the darkside is more powerful than the light, simply that it goes quicker, easier like master Yoda used to say. It has to be said that in Ani and Obi's case, Anikan was the more powerful Force user, as we all know : Ani is even more powerful than Palpatine, at least theoretically. That's the only reason why he could ever best a master like Obi Wan, who was as proficient as they come.
First
yes
nice
I watched for like 10 seconds and got an urge to watch episode 3 and the rest of my fav episodes
15:50 Mace Windu is alive YESSS
Nick Gillard is talking about fighting prowess, not overall force power levels. The number systems from the OT were never implemented. This was a big topic of discussion on the message boards when this came out.
I wonder if we will get new Vader rogue one type level action scenes in the Kenobi series as well.
Have you looked at the secret blooper reels? IIRC from the bonus disc on the remote press 11 wait then press 3 then wait again then press 8
A 4 in "A New Hope" really shows how Palp hindered Vader.
your videos are really great man
Nick Gillard the brilliant lightsaber choreographer of the Prequels.
man, its been too long since there was one of these
I'm excited for Hayden to come back in Kenobi but I feel like it's a choice only made for fanservice and because it's what they think the fans want. I'm pretty unsure of whether it could work out, but nevertheless, I feel positive about his return.
I think what the choreographer meant the difference between a level 8 and a level 9 is the Dark Side is for Anakin specifically... as he is unleashing all these pent up emotions bottled up over years and years. If we are going off this rating system Yoda and Palpatine would be 10s
YESSSSS!!!!! pls more bts, love the series!
Loved rewatching it with someone else and hearing their perspective
Keep these coming, great to revisit 👍
This single bonus DVD supplemented my favorite pass time as an impoverished child.
Yes! let's get back on these bonus dvds! Hype!
Some interesting data that you may want to know. In the game "Star Wars galactic Battlegrounds" You can put units against each other. In terms of Jedi, Young Obi wan is the weakest.
You can find out there strength by comparing them to the base line hero, which in this case is Dooku. which is about 10X as Strong as Obi Wan. This goes for both Jedi and Sith. In this test we find out that young Anakin is about 3X as powerful as Obi wan.
(Vs Dooku/Severance/and other Jedi heroes)
Obi wan; 10%
Esb Luke; 25%
Young Anakin; 30%
But this creates a problem. Anakin clearly states "my powers have doubled since we last met count"
Which would make him deal about 60% of Dookus HP. But he clearly defeats Dooku in Episode 3. So either Dooku had weakened since Episode 2 (possibly due to age?) Or Anikin did not realize how powerful he truly was.
I don't know if this information is canon or relevant. But I thought it might interest you ^^
I used to work on puzzles and have this running in the background. The whole prequel trilogy. I don’t know if there is anything like this for the original trilogy. All that I have is the audio commentary for the original trilogy over the films.
I think they meant that to achieve level 9 you have to embrace or dominate the darkness within
I find how some fans really push Mace as a super power force user, which he was, putting him above someone like Qui-Gon, which I don't necessarily agree. Yoda even stated that the arrogance of most Jedi blinded them to the dark side, which Mace demonstrated at different points (Dooku couldn't assassinate because he was a Jedi and the reflection of Jedi character). Also, there are fans who really like the 'Grey Jedi' DnD approach as well, labeling someone like Qui-Gon in that spectrum. Although, if you think about it, Qui-Gon, Obi-wan, redeemed Anakin, and Yoda are more aligned to the light side of the force than any other force user with their ability to transcend and retain their spirits/personality.
To the point of the documentary and your insight about power levels, Anakin's natural talent exposed his main character flaw of arrogance, which coupled with the fear of loss became his primary motivation beyond love of Padme and Obi-wan. Anakin felt that he didn't have to try, train, or become better. He felt entitled to progress without the merit of learning the responsibility associated with that kind of power. It's kind of like Iron Man vs. Iron Monger, the discovery of the icing problem was an integral step from crawl, walk, run. Anakin felt he was already more skilled and deserved to be respected without earning the wisdom and nuance from progressing naturally. As he progressed too fast, with the assistance of Palpatine, he would have knowledge of the "unnatural" skillset of the Dark side; which would have felt like a sudden gain for Anakin. To also quote Yoda, it is quicker, easier, and more seductive - yet, not as strong and was ultimately a Faustian deal. Anakin's quest to discover more power, which was unobtainable through the progression and lie of the Dark side.
I adore Hayden because that’s how George TOLD him to act and how Anakin SPEAKS. I don’t see why people knock the actor for being dry when that’s just the gritty character that’s very monotone.
Its the direction not the acting... And yet, he's NOT monotone aver... He's just nervously ansistingly awaiting at every moment
I'm happy to have all the bonus disks for the original and prequel trilogy
I don’t think he meant you have to turn to the dark side I think he meant you need to understand the abilities like mace did
More of these please!!
Obviously at the end after 16:00-16:05 they had to cut the stunts clips because they didn't want to show off the sacrifices over lava pits to get Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen to fight at the final battle.
Hey man can you do one of Plo koon still might be Alive🤔
