Thank you for the video, Note to self i am not going to EVER stop for ski patrol - and if they follow me to the parking lot ill simply leave and come back another day. LOL but you did a good job keeping calm and polite.
That’s the way it used to be here in the US. As a kid 20 years ago, we used to go all over the mountain with no problem. Now, there are signs everywhere that hasn’t been groomed. It’s so goddamn stupid.
Friendly advice from an attorney: In any situation with ski patrol, DO NOT give up your pass, but tell them you’re going home. They’ll try to stop you, but do NOT give up your pass. Ski to the parking lot, walk to your car, and leave. Come back 30 minutes later and keep skiing. They have absolutely, positively no legal authority to stop you unless you commit a crime, and no way of identifying you (unless you give them your pass). On the off chance they hassle you when you come back, tell them you have no idea what they’re talking about. If they push it, demand that they call the resort GM down and prove their accusation in front of him/her. No positive ID means no proof. Then raise hell with the GM for hiring such complete morons. But it almost certainly won’t come to that.
@@themeatman244 Now that you know what the attorney just told you, I'd say anyone who complies with these assholes has absolutely NO BALLS, not that it would take serious balls to defy idiots with no actual authority unless you decide to have absolutely no balls whatsoever and give it to them. I absolutely love skiing, but we all know how many complete douche bags are involved when it comes to it. I go to Utah to ski with my dad and sister, and I go every year to Iowa with my family. (I’m from St.Louis, Mo) excited to take my first solo trip to Colorado next February to ski, looking forward to not having to wait up for anybody. Definitely expecting some douche bags in Colorado though. Only experienced 1 or 2 the past 3 years I’ve gone to utah. In Iowa it’s a much smaller mountain, I’ve experienced a ton of douches there. I just don’t like the rich snobs who Karen over everything
Man I respect you guys for being so respectful my god I wouldn’t have done that at all, I woulda just laughed and walked back up and told the dude to kick rocks lmao. It almost felt like they were pranking you guys I swear 😂
I hope you got a full refund for your season passes and those employees were fired for literally stealing from you guys. I had ski patrol cut one of the corners off my season pass before for a similar situation. I was told that once all the corners were cut it would no longer be accepted. That was the last day I ever stopped for “ski patrol”
Did you even watch the whole video? They showed management the footage and they gave their passes back. Apparently one was a trainee and the other an idiot
Just because the people you're writing up have been coming here long enough to "know better" doesn't mean you don't have to close the trail. If they didn't want people to go through a trail after 4pm, then just put up the sign at 3:45pm.
Id be polite get their names and the email all the higher-ups emails i could find online after i got my pass back. They didn't post it, its pre usual close time, they still havent posted it and are continuing to harass the skiers they are misleading by not putting up a sign. Im sure the people making big bucks from the resort would love to know these guys are standing at the top of a closed run not marking it and pulling passes, really looks good and encourages more guests.
@Potato Salad with eggs maybe your local hills operate differently. If that trail is "closed after 4pm", that means they were open before that and thus people are allowed to go through the woods. If they're not allowed at all, either barricade those areas as all ski resorts do, or put up clearly visible signs that explicitly prohibit tree skiing. Every ski resort I've been to operate in this way.
It's really the only good resort in the area that always seems to be open first and closed last with the most snow and trails available. Not to mention the high speed lifts they have. Currently it's the only one open around here, all because of their snow making abilities.
bruh, skied the woods there for years at night, head lamps and all, some of the best east coast powder days I ever skied, when buffalo/holiday get dumped on, they get some serious snow, never ran into ski patrol in all my time, probably figured no one would ski the woods deep in the night like what we were doing( its pitch black without proper head lamps/gear). Shout out to the Adirondacks, we do things different.
@@JaredRider At the bottom they would have just taken your passes however, so you had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Think with your noggin next time!
I'm so glad I'm old. When I was young enough to do things that angered the ski patrol, very few people were carrying cameras at all, and digital cameras, much less integrated digital cameras in cell phones everyone has on them at all times, were things of the distant future. This meant the ski patrol could only clip your ticket/pass if they actually caught you, and they usually would not follow me into the trees. Tree skiing is fun, and ski patrollers are (contrary to some people's opinion) not terrific rough terrain/ungroomed snow skiers. Never got my ticket clipped once, even when a ski patrol duo saw me jump over the 'no jumping' sign at the compression bowl between Powder Bowl and Lucky Shot at Crystal Mountain, a favorite thing to do in my crowd. Me and my friends used to make fun of people who managed to get caught.
If you want to close a run you have to rope or fence it off with signs stating that it is closed. You can’t have it wide open and assume people will know that a run it closed, ridiculous
as someone who grew up in a ski patrol family and who is in the process of becoming one, we are NOT the ski police we are there to help you if you are hurt we are outdoor trauma medics not the police. the way these patrollers acted is the reason we have such a bad rep with normal skiers and snowboarders. It makes me disappointed in other organizations.
I love ski patrol (red jacket), you guys are awesome, you guy's dont get paid enough. Safety patrol (yellow jacket) could fall out a window and I wouldn't be sad
Hopefully HV is securing their areas before initiating confrontation and education. Thanks for the video, and for getting situations like this straightened out for skiers like myself.
Water safety on a lake I worked was the same. Used to be a reputable organization then the richest boat rental place took them over. They enforce their own authority on the lake harassing everyone meanwhile I had to call the county sheriff to get their party boat out of my mooring lines at the summer camp I ran the waterfront for. They were drinking and jumping off the boat at dusk. Local police wouldn’t respond because their boat patrol office was closed and said to call water safety, who are literally on that boat partying. Just one of a dozen stories like that, don’t even get me started on their tourist mail boat. Gage Marine on Lake Geneva.
To be fair this isn’t even the ski patrol. They are mountain hosts and seem incredibly incompetent. They have no medical crosses or equipment. But yeah they are big ass holes who don’t know their own hill
That's the part I don't understand. I have never gone skiing in the US but is the rule there that if the trail is closed you are not allowed to ski it? In my country it's simple: if it's closed, proceed at your own risk. Unless they are setting off avalanches etc of course. This is so weird.
@@the_bottomfragger Most ski area laws have ski patrol or the area being liable if you get injured so the area closes runs with high probability to injure and we try to limit liability by making sure you stay of closed runs. Also those aren’t close runs, but you described caution runs. That or you don’t know what closed means
Where do you come up with that crap ? A thirty second google search and : Under Colorado law, "a skier assumes the risk of any injury to person or property resulting from any of the inherent dangers and risks of skiing.” The New Mexico Ski Safety Act states that a skier “accepts as a matter of law the dangers inherent in that sport insofar as they are obvious and necessary.”
Iam from Austria, and i have been skiing/snowboarding my whole live but ive never seen something like skipatrol or safetypatrol didn't even know that existed. Skiing here is at your own risk if you manage to die its on you.
The ski patrol in austria only comes when you call em up afaik. In france I know they pro-actively ski down slopes as well. I like the french system better but I like austrian resorts better though
US is better because all of the off piste is avalanche controlled, unless there's clear warnings that tell you it's not. In Europe, that's impossible to do because there's glacier crevasses and other things besides avalanches. Europe wins though from the sense that people are scared to ride off piste so you can score a lot more powder. I think both systems are good
Skipatrol in Europe is to find and help anyone hurt or stragglers who have difficulty finding their way back out at the end of the day. We certainly do not have people like in this video. Plus, to be ski-patrol in Europe you need to be very fit and a very good skier.
I used to work for Vail Corp. After getting stopped once for "going to fast", which was 5 mph faster than the people around me I understood these guys were pretty much just acting out their dreams of having power over peoples lives. The next time one of them tried to stop me I just ignored him following me and talking to me and rode all the way to the parking lot, unstrapped, and walked away. He followed me for a good mile on foot while calling security but once I hit the main road and was off the property they finally stopped. The best moment was when security pulled up next to me and asked what was going on. I politely responded that I wasn't sure, but there was a man following me for quite some time and it was pretty weird of him. The looks on the two security guys faces was pure gold as they tried to figure out if I was a complete psychopath or just an asshole. Worked there for three years after that and ended up running an entire department. Good times.
An attorney’s take: This is exactly what you should do. They’re not cops, they have no legal authority to do anything but escort you off the property. They rely on intimidation and people’s ignorance of the law to get what they want.
Yup, exactly what I did, I claimed I couldn't hear him once I got to the bottom. Walked to the parking lot, made sure they didn't see what car I had and left. Your not getting my pass bud , better call the real cops if you want it.
@@Scientist_Salarian Ok counselor. What is the burden of proof that would be needed to take your pass? Preponderance? Reasonable suspicion? PC? Are you entitled to a hearing. Passes are expensive. They wouldn't be taking mine without irod clad proof that I deserved to have it taken. In this case, where was the trail closure marked? Did the skiers sign a document stating that they understood trees were closed at dusk? Even in some fake ski resort court, they keep their pass.
@@unleash_the_fury A season pass is a physical item which you legally purchased from the resort. It is your sole property under the law. No employee of the ownership company- security guard, GM, whoever- has the authority to seize your personal property. Even a law enforcement officer would need reasonable suspicion at a bare minimum, and since your pass isn’t a legally prohibited possession or stolen, they’d have a hard time legally justifying confiscating it from you. Now, the service that is provided to pass holders is under control of the resort. Simply having a pass doesn’t necessarily entitle someone to service. *IF* the resort could learn who you were without taking your pass (i.e. scan it from outside your jacket or something), they could blacklist your pass in their system. At that point, you’d have to hire a lawyer to get it reversed. The burden of proof in civil court is far lower than in criminal court, so you’d have an uphill battle to fight for a denial of service claim. They’d simply say you were behaving badly, and they had reasonable evidence to suggest they know it was you. Honestly, it could go all sorts of different ways depending on which local, state, and federal jurisdiction you live in, and how much money you (and they) are willing to pour into the fight. I hope that answers your questions a bit.
@@Scientist_Salarian pretty sure it states in the fine print that the pass is the property of the vail resort...not yours even if you bought it. Refusing to give the pass would be a bad idea They will just deactivate it online.

Big Sky is my fav place. No questions asked. The best skiing ever. Love going up the tram and hiking from headwaters. Going there late march-early April.
Easier said than done when it's the best in the area condition wise and lifts. Example, they are the only open resort around this area because of the amazing snow making capability they have with the computer run snow makers. Resorts 30 minutes from them aren't open and probably wont be for who knows how long.

Ever since Vail took over Whistler/ Blackcomb there have been asshole yellow jackets all over. Didn’t buy a pass there this year moving on to other mountains. Revelstoke and Kicking Horse here I come.
@@donziperk lol there’s been no change in patrol structure at WB since the Vail acquisition. Yellow jacket/volunteers just do speed control on the ski outs which is 100% needed cuz of shitty out of control gapers causing danger. There are no yellow jackets where you actually ski.
@@hobmarg I have never had any complaints with the ski patrol at W/B. Very professional. I have been yelled at, lied about and generally find the yellow jackets to be a bunch of wanna be security guards. I don’t race through congested areas. I may be carrying more speed than the average skier but I’m 100% in control and always on my edges. I’ve been yelled at on ZIg Zag, Cruiser DM down hill at coaches corner Crab Apple, Olympic with nobody near me. if I come across congestion I slow and stay near the edges. I’ve skied Whistler since 1973 never been involved in any incident involving other skiers. On the other hand I see people going half the speed I am and are out of control but are not bothered at all. Speed isn’t dangerous but being out of control is. I ski exact same way at SilverStar, Revelstoke and Golden and have never heard a thing. One more thing the yellow jackets aren’t the only reason I left. Since Vail (Vial) resorts took over service and on mountain experience has changed for the worse. 10,000 signatures and counting on the Vail, Make Whistler Great Again petition speaks volumes.
@@donziperk I was going to dismiss you but if you have legit been skiing there since 73 I will respect your experience. I've only been skiing there since 98 but have never been yelled at, only had them motion at me a handful of times. I used to race so I know how to ski fast, but on ski outs I just go the speed of traffic and if you ski WB a lot you know where they are posted up (it's always the same spots) so you slow down before the pitches coming into those choke points. Or just park Creekside and never see them. Honestly they are needed because there are so many clueless gapers riding out of control, trying to hit side hits etc. and WB is an inverted triangle so everyone funnels onto the same 2 ski out runs.
As an attorney, this is actually very sound advice. Ski patrol aren’t law enforcement officers. They have absolutely no legal authority to detain you, nor lay hands on you or your property unless you commit a crime (in which case any average person can detain you under citizens’ arrest, not just ski patrol). The only thing they can legally do is escort you off the mountain. So, if you get stopped by ski patrol, tell them you’re going home, but do NOT surrender your pass. If they can’t identify you, they can’t prevent you from coming back a few minutes after you drive away.
@@Scientist_Salarian Yup, I keep my pass in my pocket. I get chased I just go to my truck and bail. Your not pulling my pass and your not laying a hand on me. One caught up with me once and like you said I just claimed I couldn't hear him. He just let me go cuz he wasn't a total douche like these guys.
So for clarification yellow coats are SAT, Safety Assistance Team. Red coats are ski patrol and blue coats are instructors. Black coats are general staff. This is the case at ‘most’ mountains. My local mountain the SAT are extremely power hungry. The ski patrollers other than a few are super relaxed. Yellow coats love to voice themselves. I’ve spent plenty of time running from yellow coats
So depending on how many years you've been skiing there, that dictates whether or not they have to put up closure signs? Or it means that you're not allowed to ignore signs that aren't there? I'm so confused.
Ive skied the woods at holiday for several years and never got told that the woods were closed at night until I saw this video lmfao.... we always went in with head lamps, some of the best east coast powder days i've ever skied, guess they figured no one knew how to navigate the woods proper at night lol, Adirondacks taught me well!
As an attorney, this is actually very sound advice. Unless you commit a crime, they have no legal authority to do anything but escort you off the mountain. And if they don’t know who you are, they can’t prevent you from coming back a few minutes later. NEVER surrender your pass to ski patrol, no matter how much they try to intimidate you. Just tell them you’re going home and ski to the parking lot.
I got a season pass here. Yellow jackets are the absolute worst I’ve had plenty of shitty experiences with them. I ski through the woods at night anyways you just gotta ski faster than them and go straight to yodeler instead of stopping at the tannenbaum lift
I would of just kept hauling ass and pretended to be hard at hearing. No reason why you should have to deal with minute BS because somone else didnt take care of their own job in a timely manner. Credit to you for being so compliant and cooperative. I would of stood my ground on that one, hell i wouldnt of even stopped in the first place 😂
Never give up your pass to these guys, just meet them at the bottom of the slope by the lift and ask for their manager or higher up. The guys out there actively patrolling are usually just seasonal hires and have 0 authority. I’ve actually went and set up a closed sign for them because they wanted to call me out for riding a closed trail, that had an entrance very much open lol. You handled this well, kudos
I commend you for your behavior with the ski patrol, that is how anyone who gets in "trouble" should behave themselves, especially when you are in the right.
Wow... the fact they have no sign and are taking away passes is crazy. Plus you have it all recorded. I never ski there how the hell would I have known?
After a few of these videos from different mountains, I've learned to never stop for yellow jackets as they are not patrol but safety jackoffs with an axe to grind.
let me get this straight: the run is open during the day and they close it for night skiing. It's dusk - not night. They haven't closed the run yet. And the skiers are the ones getting into trouble? What the heck is wrong with these ski patrollers? Unbelievable.
Dusk is the most dangerous time to ski. Since there are no shadows, the terrain undulations are difficult to see. Once the lights are on, that contrast is back again. In fact, I see best night skiing.
😂😂😂 Me as a European guy. We ski in the Austrian Alps / Swiss Alps at places that are ACTUALLY dangerous. Places that go steeply downhill with potental rocks, trees, avalanches or a combination. Often over a kilometer away from the ski slopes and ski lifts. And guess what? No one cares. What if something happens? Well... Its part of the deal... Do accidents never happen then without "Ski patrol" Hero's who pull people's passes? Yes it happens sometimes. And we do have ski patrol but their job in europe is to help people who need help or bring people to safety.
Europe at least there's decent cell phone coverage anywhere on the mountain even if you're climing Mont Blanc lol. Here in the US at my home resort you got nadda until last year they finally put up a tower lol
You actually handled this very well. The guy was being a total dick and you kept your cool and apologized and were compliant with everything. I'm glad you got your passes back.
@@jimmydean239Nope, they had a video showing they broke no rules so easily the best thing to do. If they had acted like jerks that would have been on video also, but because they acted so respectfully, it just makes the patrol look like tyrants. If their passes had been revoked any judge would have sided with them which also means any half competent manager would side with them also.
Wow big credit to you guys for keeping your cool! I definitely would not have been that calm or compliant, although I think it was best in the situation given how much of a hardass he was
Gotta love how every thing became bureaucratic. One of my local mountains has only 2 t bars, the patrol is all volunteer. The locals and patrol tell you to go out of bounds because there’s better snow. The best thing is no one even know the mountain exists.
Its so fascinatingly funny for us Europeans to watch these kind of videos, and you guys taking this all serious like in the movies :) Purpose of the ski patrol here is exclusively search and rescue, and I really don't know what you need to do to get you ski pass revoked (probably something that would merit police getting involved or something serious like that).
@@LandonFox I honestly thought this "ski patrol" stuff is something from movies, and not actually a real thing. And the guys are so compliant, like this is a serious situation, everybody is handling it professionally, its crazy :) If ski patrol in Europe stopped somebody and tried to hassle them like this, they would probably just get laughed at and ignored (not ignored in terms of following safety guidlines, but definitelly ignored in terms of giving your skipass for inspection).
My god..I skied there when I was a kid. I live in Whistler now and was a ski patroller here for 15 years. Thank God I never ran into these two ass hats, I would never become a patroller. You guys were super calm, good job, I would have told them to pound sand. Put a sign up if it's closed.
@@susieasado6675 I would say, that going to the manager, after they took their passes based on a completely nonsensical argument, was a totally okay choice. The ski patrol handled the situation very poorly.
I would have told the guy on the left to f' off, regardless of how long you've skied there. No "closed sign" means it's ok to ski there, put the sign up, I won't go there. I'd have gotten their names and immediately gone to speak with resort GM
This same thing happened to me at park city. No closed sign- took my pass - made me go to some stupid class. Ive been told there doing this to tally up proof they are flagging lots of "out of control " or whatever riders to show and cover for lawsuits.
I love how this *** wagon tells you "what you know." I've been skiing for years and years, and never have i gotten a Ski Patrol briefing on the bus. Ski Patrol has an obligation to mark closed trails or runs, clearly and conspicuously.
Because a lot of them are like us and want everyone to enjoy their ride and pass it on to the generations below us and so on. Ski patrol like this encourage first timers to never come back. That’s not only bad for business but it’s a shitty attitude to have. It reminds me of the rich entitled skiers who think the resort of only for the rich and entitled. This clearly isn’t a safety issue at all, they probably thought these kids were doing something they shouldn’t and didn’t catch them doing anything so they just assumed they were. After working at a resort for a few years (not patrol) I’d have said “let’s go to the bottom and talk to your manager and explain the situation, there’s no signs or ropes the run is closed and it’s not fair to take our passes and cut a corner because we didn’t know an open run was now closed when it’s not yet dark” guaranteed if you offered to meet them at the bottom with a manager where these discussions should be had in the first place these kids would have been told to make sure a runs open and that’s that. Verbal warning because the run wasn’t roped off. The real bitching would probably have been patrol for not doing their jobs. If a runs closed you actually have to close it first.
This is so strange. The main ski resort I go to is sunshine by banff and I absolutely love the patrol and lifties. They are the nicest people ever, the lifties are usually Australian and super friendly. The patrol is really informative about when certain runs open up and the conditions on them. My buddy one time was asking about this one chute that's crazy hard and they actually asked if they could film it because nobody does it.
Yeah same at Whistler. I saw a few years ago the hottest blonde chick ever 15 feet up in a tree removing christmas lights without any safety equipment lol. Aussies are badass
I had my season pass taken once. I had to do ski patrol training for the rescue dog (Jade). They made us dig holes to get into and the Jade, who was at the top of the lift, hauled ass down and found everyone else first, I was first to go into a hole, all others were found first. She finally found me…..they wanted us to do it 2 more times……I didn’t sleep for 3 days. Being trapped in a dark hole for 20 minutes messed my head up. I know it’s only 20 minutes…….there is very limited air in these holes…..years later I returned to the ski resort…….Jade smelled me and ran right up to me and was happy to see me again. There was probably 40 people around, she ran right up to me. I got my pass back and my snow stick too after only doing one run of training for Jade. Sucked but those turns were like wow!
(I worked ski and ride school for 6 years and hold certifications in New Zealand and the Rockie mountians) Simple fact. Ski patrol does not have the legal authority to detain you, or demand your information. You can ignore them, remain silent, and leave their patroll area. I keep my pass in an RFID pouch these days, so they can't scan for identification without my consent... This has saved me twice in the past 8 years from dumb patroll or lift operators who think they have some kind authority they do not.
That dosent fly in California. I worked 25 seasons 8 as a patroller. If you go in a closed area you will lose your pass. If you dont give it up you will not be taking the lifts to the parking lot or anywhere else. Most areas are closed for damn good reasons. Why should a patroller need to risk thier life rescuing a moron that went out of bounds?
As a ski patroller myself, that was a douche move. You were very polite and they didnt mark the trail off enough clearly. Good thing you were filming.

Just because the people you're writing up have been coming here long enough to "know better" doesn't mean you don't have to close the trail. If they didn't want people to go through a trail after 4pm, then just put up the sign at 3:45pm.

Too much logic in your reply
What?
Props for being so chill, I couldn't have kept that calm and nor could I have brought myself to hand over anything in that situation.
Don’t go to Holiday Valley, check! ✔️
It's really the only good resort in the area that always seems to be open first and closed last with the most snow and trails available. Not to mention the high speed lifts they have. Currently it's the only one open around here, all because of their snow making abilities.

Ski Patrol has an obligation to mark closed trails or runs, clearly and conspicuously.
This is what Patrollers were like in the 80's. These days patrollers tend to be really chill and just want to help keep you safe and have fun.
These guys are from the 80s lol
This is so strange. The main ski resort I go to is sunshine by banff and I absolutely love the patrol and lifties. They are the nicest people ever, the lifties are usually Australian and super friendly. The patrol is really informative about when certain runs open up and the conditions on them. My buddy one time was asking about this one chute that's crazy hard and they actually asked if they could film it because nobody does it.

Ski patrol seem very untrained here at this resort..
Those guys suck. Even though they weren’t on a total power trip. You handled this so well, very mature and upstanding. Well done.
Give ski patrol just a little bit of power ... Damn meter maids of the mountain
Thanks for letting me know!
@@jeffatkinson3288 why didn’t the ski patrol do there job and put the sign up? Clearly the ski patrol is in the ring here
Sick footage handled that like a boss
The PD must've been full the day he joined Ski Patrol.
Didn’t see the location but the second you got off that lift I knew exactly where you were at.
Tannenbaum!
