Rescuing and releasing a mum & baby flying-foxes: Artemis & Aoife

  • I attended a lightwell (internal courtyard) rescue close to the Tarban Creek colony in Gladesville, where a very upset Mumma bat was trapped. Lightwells and small courtyards are traps for bats because they can't fly off the ground and they need a large turning circle to be able to circle out.
Mum Artemis and baby Aoife, came into my care overnight, and went to the Princess for buddying with her lone female who ended up in a swimming pool, whose pup drowned.
The pair of bats spent the weekend together and both were fit for a hard release after the weekend.
So the girls were released into the Tarban Creek colony, accompanied by the Princess and Maggie and the MOPs, and of course, the Princess's famous wingless pup Ayla who was required to hold onto Meg to keep her in line. And who'd have known that Maggie would be such a hit with Ayla?
Thanks Princess for taking over the care of Artemis and Aoife and for bringing along her tiny blonde supervisor of everything, who kept me in line during the proceedings.

Mumbat was remarkably cooperative. Yes, she was stunned by running into things, but she seemed to understand the “syringe-fruit” right away, ate fruit, and let you give a bottle to her baby. Wonderful that they weren’t seriously injured and could go home. So many tragic electrocutions lately. I love the patience, exquisite care, and calm loving voice you give to your batty patients. Well done, all of you. The blond wingless pup is adorable and you are lucky to have her to keep you in line. Clearly a genius who rightly appreciated Meg’s multicolored toes.

It helps if you can feed the mum to keep her occupied so I can feed the baby. Bats in shock don't make new milk and Artemis was a bit "squidgy" which is my technical term for not great. She'd hit her head, she was horribly stressed, and she wasn't managing baby particularly well but she didn't want baby gone.
I just filled in until she was feeling better. She was calm enough at this stage to kind of trust me providing I distracted her with the mandarins.

Hi CM, glad you're enjoying the channel.
      Welcome to Megabattie,
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  Год назад +13

We're supposed to mask up to protect the bats from our potential covid. In practice I get tested regularly and mask up if I'm unwell to protect the bats from anything I might have which could infect them and then mutate with disastrous consequences.
I mask up when I go to the supermarket and areas with many germy people.
And yes, we mask up from other humans if we choose. We've got a new strain going round and the MOP's parents are old so the MOPs are masked to prevent spreading anything to their parents

Meg, she is quiet because the hot talk gossip in the trees with mama bats is about a certain lady who goes around caring for babies and mamas, she already heard about you 😅
when you release them, I was doing pretty good until I saw mom flying away and her little baby head hanging by mom's belly then I completely lost it, its so emotional to see what all of you do for them. Also mothers are super heroes who flies away like that with a baby aeound you??? only mamas♥♥♥♥♥
and so they fly to the moon, adorable little girl as well.

Seems like mumbat wanted a bottle too ;-). They look so majestic in flight, I love seeing them take off in slo-mo.
Ayla's cute and smart! Surely her first word must have been "battie" and she needs to work a little on her make-up skills still ;-).
