      Hi Kim:
I don't know if he will survive; he isn't good in any way and I don't expect a survivor. Th survival info (if I know it) will be in the description. I don't know yet but he's not great.
      Welcome to Megabattie,
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.

My parents are in their 90s, so there is no cure; their issues are ongoing and we are dealing with them; this week is sorting out a new issue and it will take a few weeks.
I have sisters who deal with other things like IT issues (there are so many) and logistical issues. Between us we share the load which isn't a burden just stuff we do as a family; my brother is geographically distant but he does the financial stuff and it is all working out. I don't do IT (I can barely do it for myself); I just do medical and daily life logistics.
It's going to be fine but they're old and we just need to make it as best as it can be for them. Fortunately we're all on exactly the same page regarding our parents

Mostly within a few hours of rescue they will tolerate you and not actively try to bite; they may not like you but they won't be aggressive (usually). The bats calm down really quickly, and agree that maybe you're not that bad after all. Exceptions will be pregnant girls who are fighting for their life and the life of their baby...
Have a look at this vid; this boy let me cut a fishhook out of his balls without anaesthetic less than 2 hours after he actively tried to turn me into confetti at rescue.

I'd have liked to just let him go overnight to see if he survived, but if he did then I still needed to know if there was a fracture there which made him unreleasable, or any issue with his chest (spinal fractures and rib fractures, or clavicle fractures). He was gape breathing a little at one stage, like he had air hunger (but it could also have just been a fear response).

I don't like making them go through an anaesthetic on their rescue day, while they're full of stress and adrenaline, but in this case it was important, because I needed a clue what was going on and with the carer, he wasn't going to get vet attention for days and I was tied up with doc appointments and test appointments so I couldn't do it.
Percival died night 2; it wasn't unexpected. I would have made the same decisions again if it happened tomorrow but I don't think it was ideal. I guess I was looking for a reason he needed to be euthanased, rather than a reason to keep him alive, which sounds counterintuitive, but if there was a reason, I could shortcut him to euthanasia, rather than letting it all play out and having him deteriorate over 36-48 hours. There was no reason to euthanase, so it played out.
I was surprised when he survived the night, let alone the next day, as was the carer.

I put the information in the description under the videos.

Percival is an adult male Black Flying-Fox who was found on the ground early one morning in a local park. The lovely MOP put a sign up to warn park goers to keep their distance.
This park was extremely local to me so I tumbled out of bed and rocked up to rescue this little guy.
I still can't decide if he's adult or subadult (it's a difference in maturity and puberty), but he is a big boy if he's a subadult.
He has been very iffy in care, so I arranged xrays to see if he had chest or shoulder girdle trauma (he didn't) so we could figure out what is going on with him.
      I have dropped him to a carer because both my parents are having medical issues at the moment and are quite high maintenance;
24 hours later he is still alive but not doing particularly well; I don't know if he is a survivor yet but his condition tenuous.
      Let's hope he improves soon.
Percival was named for the street bordering the park, Percival St.
Update: I was going to update you that he died, because the carer said he died yesterday, however she called back today and asked me which bat was my rescue, the Alecto (Black) or the Grey?
      And I said, the Black.
And she said: Oh, I thought he was dead but then he moved; I didn't think he was going to survive the night but in the morning he decided he was feeling a little better, and he was happy to try some soft fruit.
So the good news is that he's a survivor.

@Megabattie Thank you for the time in your reply and for educating me on how things work. I am rather new to this forum and trying to learn my way around. I have really enjoyed your videos and learning about the different bats. To be honest I have been afraid of them for most of my life and has taken me 60yrs to realize they are pretty darn cute! When I was a child I had an experience with a bat that left a negative impression, unfortunately. One flew into the side of my face/head when I was swimming in our pool one night. My mother was frantic after watching me swat and yell, with a rubber raft over my head up through the yard to the house, where she then looked me over good trying to decide if any skin was broke. Trying to remember what every scratch and bruise on your body came from when your 10yrs old, was a little trying to say the least. My mom determined I was bat unscathed, but the fear and worry over the next few days after learning what had to happen if there had been, was enough to scare me half to death! I see things very differently now and have more appreciation for all the good they do! Your dedication to the animals in saving and caring for them, is remarkable, to say the least! Your pride shows in all your videos too, as well it should. That's a lot of work to take on, out of love for them. I'm looking forward to following you and learning more about them. I find myself amazed at how intelligent and responsive they can be, also their capacity to accept and enjoy affection. I have never thought of a bat in that way before now, but for now clearly see it. Thank you for caring for and loving them! Best Regards, Christi

@@christistanton4085 Hi Christi; good story and I can understand your fear; the little batty was either hawking for insects near the surface of the water or bellydipping for a drink, and you got in the way. It was most likely equally as terrified during the encounter as you.
The flying-foxes here are very interactive in care and if they're in permanent care they are even more interactive. (Have a look at the Mandi video playlist and anything Walter).
When I joined wildlife rescue it was because I wanted to care for parrot chicks in the spring season; somehow this got derailed and I ended up rescuing and caring for batties exclusively.

@@Megabattie We figured it was probably trying to get a drink. In hindsight, probably wasn't the best idea to put the swimming pool down in close proximity to the barn! Once it was in though, not much that could be done. Parents chose that spot because there was electricity and lights from the barn and was a small orchard between the house and the barn, pears, apples, grapes and black walnut trees! Feast for the battles, everywhere! I don't know how to make subscription public, but I will try and figure it out and do that. Thank you. Not sure what kind of bats we had on the farm, but they were small and had kinda a mean face, big teeth, I don't remember them being as cute as the ones in your videos. Perhaps it was just a child's perception? I live next door to a old church with a bell tower, there are bats in it and can hear them chirping at night. Can watch them swooping in the light from the street poles to catch bugs. We have a lot of those around and I'm not a good insect person. Think I'm more terrified of the bugs than the battles, to be honest! I about had a heart attack one summer day, sitting in my porch, listening to my pond water fountain and looked over and on one of the decorative Lily pads, was a wolf spider, every bit as big as the flower it was floating on. It Sat on it the entire day, I brought my neighbor over to see it, made my son and father come look at it (mainly because they thought I was exaggerating about it's size because they know my fear) but needless to say, they believed me after that! I'll spare you the curse words in their replies, when I asked them to get rid of it. But anyway, over six hours. In, out and about, people coming to see it, and it floated there until the sun started to go down. Out for another check to see if it was still there, standing on the edge of the porch looking down into the pond. THAT THING JUMPED FROM FLOWER TO MY PORCH, right where I was standing! I yelped, my family came running, and I was headed anywhere but that porch! They make things big in the country! 😂😂😂 Ok, I've twisted your ear long enough with my nonsense. Going to go watch some more battie videos. Thanks again. C.

@@monarchkind69 I never feed babies banana or mango or papaya - they can get bowel obstructions from these fruits. When they first start eating fruit, their guts aren't mature and with the soft fruits they can't form a spat. A spat is when they spit out the fibre after extracting the juice. This is what they're meant to do, not eat the fibre and have it go through their gut; they do it to remain light for flying.
The babies need to learn to eat fruit the right way before progressing to fruit which isn't part of their native diet, and of which they can't form a spat. I've seen babies who have eaten mango, desperately trying to poo but unable to and after 24 hours of pain and distress they might finally pass a plug of dried up mango poo. One of the vet nurses from a practice which is happy to see bats, also reports several babies being admitted with bowel obstructions who subsequently died, one after being operated on. It's better to just blanket don't give banana than it is to risk this. Just because a baby adores mango or banana doesn't mean it's good for them.
Tolga Bat Hospital gets a lot of banana (trailer loads) extremely cheaply from the rejects on the banana plantations, so they have adapted by feeding the babies watermelon as well. With watermelon it's lots of cells of melon flavoured water, which provides the hydration and the pushing power to get the banana through their gut. Babies aren't good at hydration management when they're just starting out on fruit, so the carer has to make sure the baby is well hydrated if the baby is going to be fed the soft fruits where all the fibre is going to travel through their gut. Milk is food rather than fluid (it's both, but to all intents and purposes it's food primarily with some fluid component). Babies need to be also offered water in their diet (I offer water after a feed or between feeds, and I work out whether they need extra fluids by noting the colour of their wee). I suspect mumbats can change the dilution of their milk to provide the baby with the amount of nutrition and fluid in their breast milk. Maybe it's just a matter of the mum's hydration herself, which affects her milk concentration, or there is some mechanism to respond to baby hydration, I don't know. Babies also lick water off mum's chest when she belly dips in the evening.
Banana isn't a natural part of their diet and whilst they like it and it's good nutritional value, it can be dangerous for babies..
