  • A DIY video for replacing the starter in a 6.7L Cummins. After having my parts store replacement starter die prematurely, I decided to replace mine with a gear reduction starter from XDP. Gear reduction starters are supposed turn your engine over quicker and easier while drawing less amperage with a faster, more efficient motor.
    Starter works great after install and does appear to start the engine faster. I will update with long term info in the future.

    What is that bar you had to take off

      Do you mean the bracket connecting the block and the transmission? Its just a brace between the engine and transmission. I believe its actual name is an adapter plate bracket brace. From what I heard, it might not be installed on all years of the truck.

    I'm changing one out now and the top bolt broke loose but it acts like it is cross threaded.

    • @cheesingarage
      @cheesingarage  3 года назад

      If you already loosened the other bolts it may just be the starter sagging and pulling on that top bolt. Try and support the starter and see if it is any easier to remove. If it is in fact cross threaded, you might have to go with a heli-coil or another means of thread repair.

      @colt45northtexas 3 года назад

      @@cheesingarage na it's definitely not sagging. It acts like all of the weight of the starter is hanging on that 1 bolt, but I tightened it bottom ones back up.

      @@colt45northtexas Hmmm...Could be either really corroded or, like you said, cross threaded. Your best bet might just be to spray it with penetrating oil and muscle it out hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.

    Mine doesn't have the bracket to remove on my 2012 , maybe because manual trans? Anyways, super easy and takes me like 20 minutes, got 230k out of the OEM starter, trying a Napa one now.

      @cheesingarage  7 месяцев назад

      Good to know! It could be the auto vs manual or the 3rd gen vs 4th gen, I am not sure. Yea the OEM starter lasted me close to 250k also, that's why I was so disappointed that the other started didn't last. Hopefully you have better luck with your Napa one!

      @@cheesingarage been good so far, I'm no expert, but maybe u are supposed to shim them or something, it's starts Everytime, but seems like I have to push the clutch through the floorboard lol

    my starter died on my 2021 6.7 2500. 14+K miles. This is unreal to me... Was expecting this to last sooo much longer. Replaced under warranty but I wonder how long the new one will last?

    • @cheesingarage
      @cheesingarage  2 года назад

      That's crazy! Hopefully you have better luck with the new one. My stock one lasted a 'normal' life, it was the reman from the parts store that sucked.

    How is this starter holding up? Does it still holds its speed?

      No issues so far but its only been about 6 months since I installed it. Feels/sounds like the engine turns over easier but that could just be in my head haha. Seems like those parts store remans just aren't built to last unfortunately. I feel your pain there. Thanks for watching!

      This was a little while back, but it was less than an hour I believe. But always remember, every 15 minute job is one broken/stripped bolt away from a 3 hour ordeal. haha
