    I remember playing it on the GBC when I was 8 and taking forever to beat the intro levels thinking that it was just the same old game. When DK got back up and the next screen was completely different I nearly lost my underdeveloped pre-pubescent mind. I realized in that moment that nothing was real and everything society had taught me up to that point was all a lie.

    The transition from Mario swinging on a rope in Sunshine back to him swinging on the bar in the Gameboy game was honestly inspiring. I got the sense that if you don't give up on the ideas and ways of thinking that make you unique they will allow you to succeed.

      Great little spot in the video. He's just reviewing things that happened in sequence but the way he stitches them together within the context is just all-time. Dunkey one of the greats!

    The end had me flipping back and forth between expecting Dunkey to do a bait-and-switch and thinking that he'd already baited us so many times that it would be a bigger bait-and-switch to not bait and switch. This is what years of gaslighting does to man.

      As confusing as what you said is, not only do I understand it but I can also say you literally just described my experience.
      Though I still was caught off guard by the actual punchline. It was the last thing I thought and simultaneously the first thing I felt I should have thought of after the fact.

    I think something genuinely funny about DK ‘94 is how you have the new moves in the original levels too, which just completely breaks them

      It's a brilliant way to immediately show the player that the game is going to be so much more than they're used to. Let them bust the original maps wide open before revealing the real game.

      Even if you don't use them those maps are made a lot easier than they were in the arcade in a lot of subtle ways, because they don't want to hold back the surprise of there being way more game too long.

      It's true that the new moves are available from the beginning, but they don't tell you that. You're not going to discover them if you just play through the beginning, you'd have to screw around to discover them. They do however show them off in small cutscenes as you progress through the game, it's pretty clever. It's like you're unlocking them as you play except they were always unlocked.

      It’s unfortunate that it got released in 1994 and not 1993, because I think most people (myself included) just think of DK Country when they see DK 94.
      Of course DK Gameboy was fantastic, but DK Country just overshadowed it.

    When I first played the Gameboy game I really did think it was just a port of the arcade game, and thought I'd be playing the same few levels on repeat like in the NES version. Then, I was surprised to find out there was more. Oh so much more! And the little scenes in between worlds that were like a wordless tutorial for the new mechanics. Top tier Gameboy game!

    Having played a TON of Mario vs. Donkey Kong on GBA, it's blowing my mind right now seeing the jumping, flipping, wire, handstand mechanics and puzzle platformer aspects almost all originated in Donkey Kong for Game Boy. I've heard of this game but never realized JUST how POLISHED it is holy mackerel!

    Donkey Kong December is back. This is truly the best time to be alive! I grew up with Donkey Kong 64 when we my mom bought a used copy. I remember having to practice this arcade game for hours in Frantic Factory and thought about how cool it was to play a video game inside a video game.

    Donkey Kong ‘94 is my favorite OG Gameboy game. It’s such a good game. It’s not talked about much, so it’s awesome to see Dunkey covering it.

      It's hard to put into words how impressive it is...they went so far to make Mario come alive with the different mechanics and animations. Modern pixel platformers could learn a lot from it

    DK 94 was the first video game I ever played, and was a childhood favorite. Then like 20 years later I found out that, since it was a Super Gameboy title, it had an expanded color palette for that system. That was a wonderful surprise after so many years.

      @@michaellochlann4797 craftsmanship elevated to a high enough level says as much about the human spirit as a lot of conventional art. Much of the famous works of the Renaissance were works of pure craftsmanship when you consider that the subjects of those works (religious figures, nobility, wealthy merchants) were only the subjects because someone paid an artist, who was looking to pay the bills, to paint or sculpt them. You think da Vinci cared about Lisa del Giocondo?

    This was my favorite game growing up. I would play it all the time and there was a level I just couldn't beat. (8-11 I'll never forget it) I'd ask my dad to beat it for me so I could keep progressing, waiting a whole week or two before I got to see him on the weekends. I'd come to him with all 3 save files on the same level ready for him to beat. It was one of the few things that really helped form the short bond we had before his passing. I'm thankful for Dunkey talking about it a bit. Stay safe all :)

      When I was a little kid I used to love leaving it on the main screen until demo mode started, which was Mario doing acrobatics demonstrating the new mechanics on a stage to a clapping audience, I thought it was so cool and it did actually teach me about the possible moves. I was a tiny child so I was an idiot and didn’t know button combinations were a thing the first few times I played it.

    This game is literally my childhood. Back then I had no idea what speedrunning is but I came to a level where I can finish all levels in one sitting. It is amazing to learn that people actually knew this game. Thank you, Dunkey.

    I remember the first time I played Donkey Kong '94! It was at my cousin's house when I was 6 or 7, and I brought my Game Boy with me to be occupied on either Thanksgiving or Christmas Day (I can't exactly remember which holiday it was). I saw it lying on a shelf in the living room and decided to check it out. I had the NES version, so that's what I went in expecting.
    I was blown away with how amazing it was. Thank you for bringing this underrated masterpiece into the light again!

      It also brings back and integrates some mechanics from SMB2 (USA, the Doki Doki reskin one). The whole game is almost shockingly mechanically filled and polished for a Gameboy game. Definitely recommend playing it.

      @@conorneligan7694 I had a gameboy at the time, i've played the many mario and wario titles at the time yet i've never even heard of this game and i'm pretty sure none of my friends born in the same generation knows about it too.
      It looks cool though I think i'll go pick that up and play it

    That Donkey Kong game for the GameBoy is still one of my favorites to boot up in an emulator. Prolly one of my first games I ever played when I was like 5. For as old as the game is, Mario’s movement still has a lot of depth to it. Incredible music too!

      I bought a psp to emulate gb, gba and ps1/ps2 games a few months ago. I never knew their is a good Dk game for the gb. I feel like my winter is about to be robbed.

    I remember playing the Donkey Kong on the Game Boy while waiting for a dentist appointment and thinking it would be something I could beat in 15 minutes, and I was surprised when it just kept on going.

    1:30 the font used for monkey kong is called "hobo STD" a sans serif type font made in 1950's Russia, hobo comes from a pig translation of the Russian word for "new" (heebo)

    I love when Dunkey gets nerdy over the smallest details of older games. And especially we know the love for platformers. That's crazy about the double jump and somersault in the Donkey Kong Gameboy game. That is really huge.

    Holy Mary Mother of God, a JUMPMAN reference! I had a C64 when I was a kid and that game was one of the best games on the platform. That thing had like 48 levels, some had bullets, some had little robots, some had one way ropes, some had parts of the level that would only appear when you collected the pellets, one level was invisible and would only appear a little at a time as you walked, and this was in 1983! Great game, and yes the sound when you moved was dope.

    I played this for the first time a couple months ago and was honestly mind blown this game came out when I was only four, most developers today struggle to make a game this mechanically consistent. I remember spending the whole day just trying out the moveset, landing the perfect jump after doing a backflip from a roll. Cannot recommend this enough.

    I genuinely never realised how influential the Donkey Kong series was, and you brilliantly highlighted this in the video. It’s just a shame how Donkey Kong has sort of fallen in popularity in recent times. But Kirby was never that popular, but after getting a 3D game it’s popularity skyrocketed. So maybe if Donkey Kong gets a new 3D game the same could happen. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

    Mario came a long way from jumping over barrels now he has cappy to help him get further. Imagine a Donkey Kong arcade mod with cappy and Donkey Kong having other enemies go after Mario as he throws the barrels to increase the difficulty. Cool video. ^_^
