    It all depends on your soil type. Small holes are for rich soils but for poor and hard soils we make big holes and make layers of organic matter , compost and native soil like an underground huge pot.After the tree uses everything in there it has grown alot and is strong enough to penetrate the hard soil.

    One thing i have noticed with planting the graft above the soil is that the during a cyclonic storm the part that breaks is usually the graft joint unless the tree has become mature and has really big timber. So its reccomended to plant the graft joint below the soil

    Great video and the advice about plant them high is so hard to listen to as we want them "level" with the soil but in my experience Pete is totally right. I'd add that if you can't afford biochar or azomite or even compost, then usually wood chips or mulch will be enough if you can get enough of it built up there. Pete, do you do guilds or understory right near your trees to help the trees at all? For instance do you plant comfrey or lavender or mint or fever few near or under the trees? This has worked well for me in Ohio. But maybe it's better to just let the tree go I just don't know for sure.

    I noticed a huge difference, that they do it completely different in Phoenix then they do it in Florida. And I am assuming it is due to the fact that we have clay soil and you guys have sand soil. We are taught to put Mychorizhea at the bottom of the hole and we mix the food, rock dust and native soil and use that in the hole as well as on top also with some worm castings. It is interesting for sure.

  • @richardw4928

    So here is why I believe that both yours’ and Dr Campbell’s planting videos are great but the advice is not correct for all tree plantings.
    I live in Miami-Dade county and my topsoil is black sand and rock for maybe 6 inches. Then it’s solid coral rock in most places. For the last few weeks I’ve been prepping 25 new planting holes. I have to use a jack hammer to be able to get down to where it might not be like a solid pot of stone so that water will not accumulate up the hole and waterlog the roots. And water has to be able to drain out of the hole even if it takes a few hours to do so. I’ve had to go down 3 1/2-4 1/2 feet for each hole. No soil but broken up rock is taken out. All that debris fills one green trash can 1/3-1/2 way and the garbage truck hauls it away. Now I have to put soil in each hole. I spend more on the soil than the trees. I use a 6.6 ph mixture made at a great nursery nearby. Fill it up and wet it then stomp it down and compress it so that my tree’s base is a few inches above the holes’ edges. Then I fill it and compress the soil surrounding the tree with shoes pressing it down with my weight. So I can’t ever use what was in the hole.
    Thank goodness mango roots go along the surface or my trees would be in big trouble. Now as far as the coral shell’s flower pot effect, the super rich replacement soil lets the tree grow big and strong as its roots eventually expand outward along those 6 inches of topsoil. But before that that great 6.6 ph soil makes the most beautiful healthy mango trees possible.
    So you see cultivation techniques can vary but generally speaking your video is correct most of the time. PS the ph of my top 6 inches is 8.3. Horrible!!

      Pile up mulch higher and wider. If it is an area prone to flooding, then the exposed roots shouldn't be a problem (if it's minimally exposed).

    Great info and very timely for us since we are in the process of adding fruit trees. I know ash changes ph but, I never thought to add it to fruit trees. What is the benefit of ash for fruit trees?

    • @1d1hamby
      @1d1hamby 7 лет назад +1

      Mama T there are many benefits and dangers to adding ash. one of most important things to know is what is in your ash. you don't want heavy metals and contaminants that are going to hurt the tree. the benefits are that the ash helps water move through the soil and carry nutrients into the nearby soil.

    • @PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL
      @PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL  7 лет назад +1

      Mama T thank you! We add the ash as source of calcium, magnesium, potassium and trace elements. It can raise PH but I've never used it directly for that reason.

      Pete, You should have moved that apple tree into full sun location. Apples struggle with less than 5 hours of full sun. And they dont need a lot of chill hours and switch to heat to break dormancy, Check Tom Spellman's experiment with high chill apples that he did for Dave Wilson nursery in Irvine,CA which gets under 100 hours. I think they still have video on Dave Wilson's channel.

    Pete, I live in the desert(Phoenix area), soil is hard clay, would you still not recommend putting at least gypsum and 50:50 compost:native soil on the bottom and not making a slight crater so water is not running everywhere? Garry Cole I do find the mulch works as a sponge, you should be able to retain water while watering that way.

    • @greenblood3708
      @greenblood3708 7 лет назад +1

      Garry, Gypsum takes years to make any difference and you will need to keep re-applying it until all clay is broken down. No point adding it into the soil when you plant a tree. You need to start working it into the soil at least two years before you plan to plant a tree to see any positive effects.
      All you need to put in hole is mycorrhiza spores that will loosen up clay around roots as It starts growing webs in the soil and pulls nutrients out of clay and feeds the tree. if clay is over 75% you would need to mix in some inorganic material e.g. lava rock or coarse sand to improve drainage. Adding rich organic material into the planting soil will drastically slow down root development. All organic material should go on top starting at drip line to prevent roots from circling edge of the hole.
      Mangoes grow fine in clay as long as they are not waterlogged. They do like foliar feeding especially in hot arid climates. You will see a big difference in hot AZ climate with foliar feeding. Stop by Shamus O'Leary's nursery and check his mangoes that he grows in native AZ soil.
      It rains a lot in Florida. If you create a crater around trunk of the tree it will turn into mulch before rain season ends.

    I am going to watch all your videos.
    Just so you know though, your audio is a bit muffled.-
    Audio issue did vanish further into the video. Maybe the camera was a bit far away at the beginning.

      Danuta Presutti these trees have the potential of fruiting the first year, we typically remove the young fruit the first year or two. This allows that energy to go towards tree growth and wont stress the young tree.
      Mango season started in Florida maybe 2 weeks ago, it will go to August fairly strong.
