Ah, used as the theme song to one of the best TV shows ever, Freaks and Geeks, which just happened to have debuted 25 years ago yesterday. And Joan is awesome and still rocks.

“Bad Reputation” is from her first solo record in 1980 (right before forming the Blackhearts). The Runaways (Joan’s first band, all teenage girls, 1975-1979) had a reputation for being “jailbait” rock and had a reputation for partying. However, after the Runaways broke up in Spring of 1979 Joan went into a DEEP depression. She contemplated joining the military, but MUSIC was her PASSION. At first she didn’t know WHAT to do. When the Runaways were a band the MEDIA and the INDUSTRY all told them “girls can’t play rock n roll” (something the Go-Go’s and other female artists and bands would deal with) and at this point it LOOKED like they all won and were laughing at Joan. She started drinking REAL heavy and abusing drugs badly. She hung out w/ “punks” from the L.A. scene such as Sid Vicious and others, that got her labeled as a trouble maker, thus she had a bad reputation among the industry and NO ONE would sign her to a record deal (23 major and minor record labels sent her rejection letters which she still has to this day), so Joan and her manager started their OWN label “Blackheart Records” and put the first 2 albums on their own. The SONG “Bad Reputation” was about her attitude towards the haters. “Everyone can say what they wanna say, it never gets better anyway. So WHY should I care ‘bout a bad reputation anyway? Oh no!” AFTER the song and album “I Love Rock n Roll” became HUGE they RE released the song “Bad Reputation” as a single and NOW became a hit!!! They recorded a video for it basically giving a middle finger to all the record companies that told her NO, worth checking out. The song would also become a staple in Pop Culture being used as the opening song for the show “Freaks and Geeks” and used in films such as “10 things I Hate about you” and “Shrek” and recently as Professional Wrestler Ronda Rousey’s walk out theme song.

    🔥 The song still slaps!

I think the song isn't aimed at mature women but the rebellious teenagers. It's too repetitive for me, although I love Blitzkrieg Bop and I Wanna Be Sedated by Ramones. I dig punk but that's mediocre for me.

The first time I heard this song as a child was in the cartoon "Shrek", it was fun. In fact, Joan Jett has many hits and just good songs. And I also like her first project in the group The Runaways with the legendary Lita Ford. Be sure to react to this group.

HEART - " Heartless " 1975 Audio version, the ROCK Sound that would inspire how Barracuda's Guitar & Drums would sound like in 1977 // also check out another HARD ROCK song also by HEART - " Sing Child " (Melody Maker) 1976 Audio Version. GUITARS DRUMS & BASS are absolute FIRE! 👌The reason why I believe this song is Underrated is because of the title's name, but not knowing that the sound is just as Heavy and Hard Hitting as their super hit song BARRACUDA I've heard SING CHILD and HEARTLESS Countless times and always press PLAYBACK ⏯️▶️ it's that AWESOME 🎸 🎹 🔥🔥

THANK YOU for reacting to JOAN JETT!!! She is called the “Godmother of Punk” and “Queen of Rock n Roll”, and has pioneered women in hard rock since the 70’s! She got her first guitar at 13 as a Xmas present from her parents and was musically influenced by T-Rex, Bowie, Iggy Pop & SUZI QUATRO. At 15 years old she started the FIRST ALL GIRL punk/metal influenced hard rock band in 1975 which also featured a teenage Lita Ford on lead guitar and vocalist Cherie Currie (However, FANNY was the first all girl ROCK band but punk had not come into the music scene yet until the mid 70’s). In 1976 they debuted their first album “The Runaways” which spawned the classic song “Cherry Bomb”, which Joan Jett wrote as an audition song for vocalist Cherie Currie, alluding to her name and the fact that they were all “teenage firecrackers” (Cherie Currie, 16, wore a corset, fishnet stockings, black underwear and high heels on stage which gave them the reputation as “jailbait rock”). Although this was their most recognized song, it certainly does not define them as a band. Their album debuted the same time that Heart debuted their album “Dreamboat Annie”. Both bands had to deal with sexism and misogyny from the male dominated genre of hard rock, although Heart was backed by male band members, the Runaways got it worse being ALL teenage girls. They released “Queens of Noise” in 1977 and toured Japan where they were HUGE, they were NEVER taken seriously in America. Lead vocalist Cherie Currie quit the band during the tour making Joan the front girl of the band. After the tour they recorded what I think is their best album, “Waiting for the Night'' which Joan Jett wrote most of the songs, along with some songs written by Lita Ford. It was a punk/metal influenced album after touring in England and being exposed to the punk rock scene, later touring with the Ramones, Cheap Trick, etc. By 1978 there was heavy drug abuse and tension among the remaining 3 members of the band (Joan, Lita and drummer Sandy West) after they released their 4th and final studio album “And now, the Runaways” (which featured the song “Black Leather” written by Steve Jones and Paul Cook from the Sex Pistols). Joan Jett gravitated towards a Punk sound and both Lita and Sandy towards a more heavy metal sound. By Spring 1979 the band broke up and Joan Jett began her solo career which would last till this day. Later Lita Ford would also find mainstream success.
In 1979 Joan Jett met Kenny Laguna, a producer who also became her manager. Together they set out to launch Joan’s solo career but NO ONE wanted Joan Jett. Joan recorded FIVE songs on a demo tape: “I Love Rock n Roll”, “Crimson and Clover”, “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah!), “Bad Reputation” and “You Don’t Own Me”. The demo was sent to *23* major, and minor, record labels. ALL *23* labels rejected her saying, in essence, she wasn’t marketable. Their letters said Joan “should lose the guitar” or “look prettier” and she needed a “song search”. Not giving up, Kenny Laguna took some money he had saved and both Kenny and Joan started their OWN record label, BLACKHEART Records. They recorded their first album titled “Joan Jett” in 1980 and sold their records at shows from the trunk of their car. Eventually they were signed on to Boardwalk Records and they re-released the album as “Bad Reputation”. Joan put an ad saying, “Wanted 3 good men” for a band and the Blackhearts were formed. While still struggling as a woman in hard rock the band recorded the album “I Love Rock n Roll”. The title track went to #1 on the Billboard chart for 8 weeks in a row!!! The next single “Crimson and Clover” went to #5 (a cover song from Tommy James and the Shondells which Kenny Laguna temporarily played keyboards with and he brought the song for Joan to sing). They re-released the songs “Bad Reputation” and “Do You Wanna Touch Me” and they became hits. The video for “Bad Reputation” was a JAB at all 23 record labels that rejected her (note that the 4 songs that were rejected were 4 hits on the Billboard charts). Joan Jett was HUGE and was touring with Queen, the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and other big bands. In 1983 she released the album called “Album” which had 2 hits “Fake Friends” and a cover of Sly and the Family Stones’ “Everyday People”. In 1986 she appeared in the movie “Light of Day” with Michael J. Fox, with her acting performance getting great reviews, and the title track song written by Bruce Springsteen. In 1988 “Up your Alley” was released and 2 songs were hits “I Hate Myself For Loving You” and “Little Liar”. In 1990 “The Hit List” was released, an album of ALL cover songs, including the covers of “Dirty Deeds (Done Dirt Cheap)” by AC/DC, “Love Hurts” by Nazareth and “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” by CCR. In the early 90’s the Grunge era came but Joan continued putting out albums and non stop touring. “Notorious” (1992) and “Pure and Simple” (1994) were released. Joan also did other TV shows and movies such as “Boogie Boy”. In 2000 she was doing “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” on Broadway playing Magenta. “Naked” CD was released in Japan (not in America) which had the song “Science Fiction, Double Feature”. In 2006 she released the “Sinner” CD which had the video for the song “ACDC”, a cover of the Sweets’ song (about bisexuality) which featured Carmen Elektra. Joan Jett also toured the Vans Warped Tour main stage that year. In 2013 she released “Unvarnished” and the song/video for “Any Weather” co written by Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and the song “Soulmates to Strangers” co written by Trans musician Laura Jane Grace from Against Me. In 2015 Joan Jett and the Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame after the previous year when Joan Jett performed “Smells Like Teen Spirit” w/ Nirvana when they were inducted. Throughout the years Joan Jett has written songs for other artists such as Alice Cooper, L7, Bikini Kill, etc. She was dubbed the leader of the “Riot Girrl” movement of the 90’s. She produced other bands and signed them to her Blackheart Records label. She is an animal activist for P.E.T.A. For years she also goes to play free shows for American troops overseas bringing them “a piece of home”. She is a singer, musician, songwriter, producer, record label owner, activist, pioneer, legend and Icon. Below will be some links to Official Videos and performances. For a more in depth account of her history check out the Showtime music documentary “Bad Reputation” it’s on RUclips.

Well, I think you hit on virtually every comment I would have made tonight, Nick, lol, especially the topic of the song being empowering for women, considering Joan was working in a traditionally male arena. You did mention that Nike used this in their advertising, and that reminds me of something I've been meaning to say. Some years ago I worked with a lady from Greece, and she had several family members named Nick/Nicholas, which is a popular Greek name. She told me that the derivation of the name comes from the goddess Nike. So when I see you with the word "Nike" sprawled across your chest, it just seems perfect.

Fun Fact: Jett wrote this with Kenny Laguna, who produced the album and helped her establish a solo career after her group, The Runaways, broke up. In a Songfacts interview with Laguna, he said: "It's about Joan having been kind of a wild woman in The Runaways, and us trying to make a record deal, going around having people say, 'No, she's too crazy, like the punks and nazis.' Joan had this bad reputation, no label would sign her - that's why we own the records. It was so frustrating, we thought we should write a song about it. One day Joan said something and I said, 'You shouldn't do this.' I was trying to give her the advice of an old man, but she was a teenager at the time, and she says, 'Look, I don't care about my bad reputation.' I said, 'Whoa, there's the song.'"

THAT WASN'T A GUITAR SOLO. GEEZ, GUYS. I even preemptively yelled that at my phone right after it ended. GRRR. You guys ALWAYS call non-guitar solos, guitar solos and it's annoying, and this was easily the worst example of that. 😡 Not every time when you hear a basic guitar melody in between versus or choruses or anything else is it a guitar solo, so STOP DOING THAT. 🙄
As for Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, do "Crimson And Clover" (Tommy James & The Shondells cover), "Fake Friends," "Cherry Bomb" and "(I Love) Playing With Fire" (both Runaways covers), "I Love You Love Me Love," "Light Of Day" (theme song of the movie of the same name starring Michael J Fox and Joan Jett), "Good Music" and "I Hate Myself For Loving You," which came-out in 1988 and is my all-time favorite Joan Jett song. I would almost recommend her #1 signature song by far, "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" which was her sole Top Ten smash hit from 1981, but - just like literally everybody else including me - you guys would have to be beyond tired of that song by now, so it's better to simply omit it.

@@ViewsFromThe502 So: you are comfortable with, simply, repeating others' errors and conflating them and helping them grow, then??
If your father stabbed your brother you'd be like "o.k. ...I guess they can have another, anyway"?? -Is that it?? 🙄😠
"It's not my problem...." is, frequently, precisely, the problem.
In fact I have taken such things (as you blurt out, above) up with "genius" [They, most-certainly, AREN'T!!] and they refuse to do anything but brush it off and offer out, only, nonsensical non-responses and "it doesn't matter that much" [To "genius": If it "doesn't matter that much" then: why do you INCLUDE it in the FIRST place or why "can't" (WON'T!) you, simply, ELIMINATE them??] idiot "answers."
So how is this the "problem" of someone who knows better and attempts to educate someone who doesn't, yet? (even if somewhat "bitterly," in your view Deserved!: as: when no-=one listens to you even though you're correct, it ends-up being infuriating And NOT at all "your fault!" indeed!)??
It's the person who realizes it matters and that incorrect (or inexact and unexplained) information is being falsely disseminated to, immediately, somehow, change everyone else's minds, from having accepted the misinformation they've been fed, somehow??!

Did you just compare a stabbing to lyrics? Ok.
Hey, look, this guitar tab site called it a solo, too! Go for them next!

Oh, look! Another tablature site claiming that is, in fact, a guitar solo. We can keep going if you'd like, or we can argue on here like we have nothing better to do. Clearly, this is one that people do believe is a solo, even if it is straightforward.
