The SONG “Bad Reputation” was about her attitude towards the haters. “Everyone can say what they wanna say, it never gets better anyway. So WHY should I care ‘bout a bad reputation anyway? Oh no!” AFTER the song and album “I Love Rock n Roll” became HUGE they RE released the song “Bad Reputation” as a single and NOW became a hit!!! They recorded a video for it basically giving a middle finger to all the record companies that told her NO, worth checking out. The song would also become a staple in Pop Culture being used as the opening song for the show “Freaks and Geeks” and used in films such as “10 things I Hate about you” and “Shrek” and recently as Professional Wrestler Ronda Rousey’s walk out theme song.
I think the song isn't aimed at mature women but the rebellious teenagers. It's too repetitive for me, although I love Blitzkrieg Bop and I Wanna Be Sedated by Ramones. I dig punk but that's mediocre for me.

You did mention that Nike used this in their advertising, and that reminds me of something I've been meaning to say. Some years ago I worked with a lady from Greece, and she had several family members named Nick/Nicholas, which is a popular Greek name. She told me that the derivation of the name comes from the goddess Nike. So when I see you with the word "Nike" sprawled across your chest, it just seems perfect.

In a Songfacts interview with Laguna, he said: "It's about Joan having been kind of a wild woman in The Runaways, and us trying to make a record deal, going around having people say, 'No, she's too crazy, like the punks and nazis.' Joan had this bad reputation, no label would sign her - that's why we own the records. It was so frustrating, we thought we should write a song about it. One day Joan said something and I said, 'You shouldn't do this.' THAT WASN'T A GUITAR SOLO. GEEZ, GUYS. I even preemptively yelled that at my phone right after it ended. GRRR. You guys ALWAYS call non-guitar solos, guitar solos and it's annoying, and this was easily the worst example of that. 😡 Not every time when you hear a basic guitar melody in between versus or choruses or anything else is it a guitar solo, so STOP DOING THAT. 🙄
As for Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, do "Crimson And Clover" (Tommy James & The Shondells cover), "Fake Friends," "Cherry Bomb" and "(I Love) Playing With Fire" (both Runaways covers), "I Love You Love Me Love," "Light Of Day" (theme song of the movie of the same name starring Michael J Fox and Joan Jett), "Good Music" and "I Hate Myself For Loving You," which came-out in 1988 and is my all-time favorite Joan Jett song. I would almost recommend her #1 signature song by far, "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" which was her sole Top Ten smash hit from 1981, but - just like literally everybody else including me - you guys would have to be beyond tired of that song by now, so it's better to simply omit it.
We usually look at the Genius lyrics, and they labeled it as a solo. Take it up with them.
