One of my favorite bands ever! Tommy Shaw was actually discovered playing in a bar in Montgomery, Alabama. He will periodically show up and play with the TranSiberian Orchestra and did just that in Birmingham, Alabama where they briefly renamed themselves the Tommy Shaw Orchestra.
It doesn't get any better than this. They play this at the end of a concert when they get a curtain call. Tommy Shaw's voice is incredible. This was over 40 years ago and they are still rocking.
Another little piece of trivia is that a Piece of Eight is a unit of currency from long ago when colonists in British North America weren’t allowed to mint coins so when they ran out of British coins they resorted to cutting whatever coins were handy which was most often Spanish coins. They would cut a Spanish silver dollar which was worth eight Reales into eight pieces and it became known as a piece of eight
Which is also where the expression "two bits" came about. Two bits of the cut coin was one quarter of the total, hence two bits came to mean a quarter.
Renegade has been my top favorite from this band since I first heard it in the 6th grade (waaaay back in 1978). Another one that Tommy Shaw sings on is "Too Much Time On My Hands" (my 2nd favorite song from Styx). I've always preferred his voice over Dennis DeYoung's... A few other favorites are - Don't Let It End, Show Me The Way, Babe, Best of Times, & Lady. I saw them in concert once & yeah, they ended the show with this song. The place was dead quiet during the Acapella part, but as soon as the beat dropped, the entire stadium full of people were on their feet & dancing, singing along, clapping, & stomping their feet during the chanting to the heavy drum beats. It was so loud that you could barely hear the band - LOL!
John passed away years ago. Todd Suchermann plays drums...has since the late 90's. The Pittsburgh Steelers adopted this song as a theme song for the Defense and play it in the 2nd half at Heinz Field.
I have seen Styx numerous times and the 70’s and 80’s were incredible!! I introduced my kids to Styx at a very early age and they always went back to this song and would brings their friends over and dance and jam all around the house!! They are 25 and 26 now and still love the band!!
First time I heard this was at the roller skating rink when I was in 7th grade…still a smokin song. Freakin harmonies & the guitar jammin with the drums right off!…oh yeah. Tommy Shaw just nailed the vocals. This in on my “Route 66” playlist!
Just so everyone knows, it is referred to as "The River Styx" in ancient Greek mythology... Check out "The Grand Illusion"... "Renegade" is my 4th or 5th favorite Styx song...
This one was written and sung by Tommy Shaw. FYI, 'Styx' references the river Styx from Greek mythology. If you touched it, you would lose all memories and forget who you were. The only way to safely cross it was to pay The Ferryman a coin for him to take you across. The Ferryman was essentially the visage we have for The Grim Reaper, a skeleton wearing a black robe and wielding a scythe. Of course, once across you were in the world of the dead, so I don't know how 'safe' it was.
Actually, the river Lethe is the one that if you drink from it, you lose all your memories. Lethe is one of five rivers that combine to form the River Styx. Achilles' mother dipped him the River Styx, which gave him invulnerability, except for the heel that she held him by as she dipped him. Achilles was later killed in the Trojan War by an arrow fired by Paris. The arrow stuck Achilles in the heel. This was the original of the term "Achilles Heel".
Crystal Ball is one of my all time favorite songs!! I don’t know what it was specifically about that song, but I used to play it over and over again as a pre-teen when it came out!!!
Styx, in Greek mythology, one of the rivers of the underworld. The word Styx literally means “shuddering” and expresses loathing of death. In Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, the gods swear by the water of the Styx as their most binding oath. ... There is a legend that Alexander the Great was poisoned by Styx water.
I've always enjoyed all the music by Styx. I started listening to this Classic Rock Band in the mid 70's. I had cassette tapes of them and other great Classic Rock Bands. I enjoy this Classic Rock Band for years. Rock On Styx 🤟🤘👊✊🤙
I would die laughing my ass off to watch you guys react to "Mr. Roboto". I am not advising that song but dang, I get a feeling like it would bust me up.
It wasn't a bounty hunter that was coming for him, it was the hangman, the executioner who was going to put the noose around his neck and pull the lever that would drop the floor out from under him to snap his neck. This was essentially a song from Death Row.
Great to see you finally reacting to one of the best bands in history. Styx is particularly known for their great vocals/harmonies and their vast music variety and styles because they have 3 lead singers/3 songwriters. Hard rock, progressive rock, folk, techno, ballads, the works. Absolutely top notch. I highly recommend "Miss America, Queen of Spades, Blue Collar Man, Come Sail Away, Midnight Ride, Man in the Wilderness, Rockin' The Paradise, Snowblind. Thank you.
Great reaction! This song has Tommy Shaw on lead vocals. You might also like the studio versions of "Come Sail Away" and "Lady" and "Mr. Roboto" with Dennis DeYoung singing lead vocals and "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)" and "Too Much Time on My Hands" with Shaw on lead vocals.
Styx is named after the River Styx in ancient Greek mythology, that you paid the boatman, Charon, to cross into the underworld. It basically represents the transition from life to death.
Brother John Panozoo the. Original drummer passed away July 16th 1996. Todd Sucherman stepped in the ghost drum on the Greatest Hits Albums and ended up joining the Reunion tour. And has been with them ever since.
They still sound great today. Tommy Shaws voice is the exact same. That guy can sing! You need to check out them with The Contemporary Youth Orchestra , tour called "One With Everything". So good
Queen Of Spades, Man In The Wilderness, Too Much Time On My Hands, Crystal Beall, Rockin The Paradise, Come Sail Away, Miss America, Snowblind, Foolin Yourself
This is a smoking and hanging out song (pumped it's Friday), young, high (not overly energetic) but having fun and no where near ready to eat or sleep yet! lol TY for the reaction!
I forgot that Lawrence Gowan has been singing with them in more recent years. He's a vocalist who was born in Scotland, but raised in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. The hits he had released under Gowan in the 80s were mainly popular in Canada, the most notable being "(You're a) Strange Animal" and "A Criminal Mind". The latter has a pretty good video, which looks like something that came out of a comic book.
In more recent years...try 23 years! Thats a complete music career to most, you make it sound like he's the 'New' guy. Gowan has played with the best of them long before his current career too. He was a key member of Ronnie Hawkins legendary rock band "The Hawks" back in the day and has shared the stage with many of the greatest rock and roll legends of all time. He's played piano with the likes of Jerry E Lewis, Carl Perkins, Robbie Robertson to name just a few. Watch a few Ronnie Hawkins Bandstand youtube videos to see why Styx chose Larry
I would like to know what Tommy Shaw was eating drinking and smoking while being raised in Montgomery, Alabama because he wrote songs way beyond what his young self was in the 70s..His insight was beyond that of a young popular party boy that just wanted to have a good time .
BTW, they're still touring: I just watched their concert in Orlando from 2 nights ago (where they mention today is the 50th anniversary of the band). You can also checkout their concert footage from a few weeks ago in Las Vegas with Nancy Wilson(of Heart).
I was in junior high and high school in the mid to late 1970s through the early 1980s. I wish that everyone younger than me could have been there for the mother lode of music that came out during this time.
When it comes to STYX pick your fancy. Lady - Born for adventure - Light Up - Lonely child - Lorelei - Midnight ride - Mother dear - Prelude 12/Suite Madame Blue - Clair de lune/Ballerina - Crystal ball - Jennifer - Put me on/Mademoiselle - Shooz - This old man - Castle wall - Come sail away - Fooling yourself - Man in the wilderness - Miss America - The Grand illusion - Blue collar man - Great white hope - I'm Okay - Pieces of Eight - Queen of spades - Lights - Babe - A.D. 1958/Rockin' the paradise - Lonely people - Snowblind - Too much time on my hands - Don't let it end - Mr. Robotto

In the world of REH (Conan creator), Styx is a river separating ‘Stygia’ and the southern lands/kingdoms from the plains of ‘Shem’ and the northern Hyborian/Hyperborean kingdoms. Have their collection up to ‘edge of the century’.
These guys were my very first rock concert! I was 12! Guitarist Tommy Shaw is singing this song! James Young, Shaw, and DeYoung alternate singing on most of their songs. Tommy Shaw branched out in early 90s and formed Dam Yankees with Ted Nugent and Jack Blades from the Band Night Ranger.
In Greek mythology, The Styx is the river between the world of the living and the world of the dead. Peace.
coins on the eyes to pay the boatman to take you across...
Yup
Reminds me of artist Chris Deburg (sp?) "Don't Pay the Ferryman" of the mid 80s.
Ooh, thanks for that. I'll stay on the living side. Lol
You are a true man of culture!
The mythological river Styx.
Tommy Shaw leads, great vocals, was absolutely nuts for this band!! ❤👍🏽
Grand Illusion & pieces of eight masterpiece albums
As a Huge Steelers fan who attends games, this is played between 3rd and 4th quarters and the fans go NUTS.
Renegade has one of the best A cappella openings in a rock song. Enjoy!!!
Agree but Queen has the best period imo :)
Yes it does.
Lead singer on this song is Tommy Shaw. He is now 70 and still rocks hard and sings like he is twenty. Amazing guitarist also.
A GREAT SONG! Tommy Shaw rocks on lead vocals!!!

Just saw TommyStyx last month and he still sounds amazing 🤘❤️
Styx and REO Speedwagon toured a lot together
World class musicians, two lead guitarists. Great band with a significant body of work.

Rock on! Love them❤
Pittsburgh Steelers use this song during the 4th quarter to get the team and fans fired up !
John passed away years ago. Todd Suchermann plays drums...has since the late 90's. The Pittsburgh Steelers adopted this song as a theme song for the Defense and play it in the 2nd half at Heinz Field.
At this point in time they had 3 singer songwriters. Want a banger? Try ‘ Miss America’ with James Young at lead vocals !
I've been trying to get people to listen to "Miss America" forever. Only two people I've seen have reacted to it so far...
And don't forget Snowblind.... ohhhhyeaaaaah
GREAT vocals, GREAT guitar, GREAT lyrics, BEST Styx song EVER!!!
Tommy Shaw on lead vocals ... amazing rocker
The Styx is the river that ferries human souls to the afterlife.
I have seen Styx numerous times and the 70’s and 80’s were incredible!!

Don't Pay the Ferryman!.........Chris De Burgh
Great reaction. I recommend Man in the Wilderness and Crystal Ball; both with Tommy Shaw singing lead.
Also, SNOWBLIND.
Oh yes, Crystal Ball.

My Steelers hype song. Fucking excellent!
Tommy Shaw on lead vocals.
Bad baby bad baby 😂😂😂😂
Watching you guys is like watching "Night at the Roxbury. Party On!

Great selection of recommended Styx songs. I would add "Prelude 12/Suite: Madame Blue" to that list as well.
Good list. A deep track that rocks big-time(and one of my favorites of theirs) is "Castle Walls".
@@castlew4162 Wholeheartedly agree. "Castle Walls" is one of my all-time favorites as well.

Styx are great......you guys haven't done a Supertramp song yet. How about "Take the Long Way Home" to start.
Love this one! And yes, this song is used in one of Adam Sandler 's movies!
Styx good band I remember this record when I was a young girl.

“That’s what makes it a great song” - Ryan, A Musical Genius
💯
Same album -- Blue Collar Man (Long Nights). Iconic synth intro.
Queen of Spades. It’s off the Pieces of Eight album. Classic James Young guitar solo at the middle and the end of the song

Queen Of Spades, Man In The Wilderness, Too Much Time On My Hands, Crystal Beall, Rockin The Paradise, Come Sail Away, Miss America, Snowblind, Foolin Yourself

Watching you guys do a reaction is like watching a three ring circus with a different act going on in each ring. Oh by the way, this is a complement!
I would like to know what Tommy Shaw was eating drinking and smoking while being raised in Montgomery, Alabama because he wrote songs way beyond what his young self was in the 70s..His insight was beyond that of a young popular party boy that just wanted to have a good time .
Tommy Shaw sings Renegade. Check out Suite Madame Blue sung by Dennis DeYoung, and Miss America sung by James Young.
The river Styx in Greek mythology is the river that takes you away after you die.
Everybody loved this song! It hit exactly where we needed it to. LOVE. STYX. ❤
you know what I love about these guys? they all are not yes man, they have there opinions. and they are their opinions not anyone elses or each others
Ahhh, Styx. Another underrated band. You need to check out their Crystal Ball album. One of their best, in my opinion.
The river Styx in greek mythology is the river that leads to hell. GREAT GREAT band. Thanks for playing this epic track.
THIS IS GREAT!!! STYX ROCKS!!!
Saw Dennis DeYoung lead singer perform a couple years back … still sounded amazing!!! Him and his band sound just like Styx!! They were awesome!
John Panozzo died right around 1996.
This song brings back memories. Good band
Good call guys. Blue Oyster Cult "Burning For You" EPIC!!!
I graduated in 1978. This song was huge. I'm pretty sure I still have the album (but no phonograph).
hell ya !! stank face on the bobble heads !!
BTW, they're still touring: I just watched their concert in Orlando from 2 nights ago (where they mention today is the 50th anniversary of the band).

I love Tommy singing this at Daryl's House.
Love Daryls House! Tommy was great!
Everyone had this album in college. 😁❤️
Dennis DeYoung from Styx! Very popular in the later 70’s! They’re awesome! ❤
I played the record so much I wore it out and had to buy another.
Guessing that 'pushing' sound at 11:00 is gallows when hangman drops him. Thx for the reaction. ✌🏻
The vocals are incredible, I don't know anyone who doesn't think Tommy Shaw can't sing with the best of them
This song is a masterpiece, period!!
Another tune from my HS days in the 70's
❤️

That "push" sound on the drums that you talked about is a neat effect: a reverse gated reverb. Used a lot in 70's and 80's rock.
Love Mr. Roboto, Come Sail Away Dennis DeYoung is great singer who played piano, keyboards etc.....
One of the best rock songs of the 70's
When this song came out it was the song of that time. Everyone had it on a album or a 45 single. Tommy Shaw singing still sounds that good today.
Other great ones:
Too Much Time On My Hands
Come Sail Away
Blue Collar Man
The Best of Times
The Grand Illusion
Mademoiselle
And Miss America.
Also, go down that Supertramp rabbit hole when you get the chance.
The Logical Song
Goodbye Stranger

Man, Tommy can sing! Saw them twice. He's got a video at a guitar shop on his own doing crystal ball. Incredible. Find that gold mine
The first time I saw KISS was because STYX was the opening band....in the 502 !!!
In the world of REH (Conan creator), Styx is a river separating ‘Stygia’ and the southern lands/kingdoms from the plains of ‘Shem’ and the northern Hyborian/Hyperborean kingdoms.
Have their collection up to ‘edge of the century’.
The concert experience of this classic is out of this world .
Tommy shaw continues past the length of the album track
Tommy is still shredding
Tommy Shaw did a bit with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra "Fooling Yourself" that's just beyond description. Oh...........so wonderful
Styx is the name of an evil river in Greek mythology
I missed baseball practice to go to a Styx concert and got demoted to JV.
No, Guys, it is not a fancy spelling of "sticks"... Styx is the name of the fiery river between Earth and the Underworld in Greek mythology.
Don't mess with Tommy Shaw.. this is the amazing...
