'Real', trickery or diabolic ? Apparitions and the Supernatural :vetting and the Vatican.

  • DISCERNMENT OF ALLEGED SUPERNATURAL PHENOMENA
One of the most compelling attractions of Catholicism is the immersion in the supernatural. The Church birthed with the miracle of the resurrection. It was launched with the miracle of Pentecost.
The old pagan gods of the Roman Empire gave way before the supernatural potency of the sub apostolic church. Despite the best efforts of schismatics down the ages, God has renewed and refreshed his Church with infusions of the mystery of the miraculous.
Protestantism has increasingly succumbed to either dull rationality or hyper-hysteria.
In the Catholic world the apparitions of our Lady remain one of the most powerful tools of renewal of piety, repentance and faith.
But the supernatural is double edged. It presents us with authentic interventions, but equally with distorted and even diabolic phenomena. It is a truism that evil has the capacity to present itself as good. It is equally true that the supernatural can be mimicked.
The Catholic Church has taken the task of discernment with the utmost seriousness. A good deal hangs on being able to tell good from evil and the authentic from the illusory.
The last time the procedure for assessing the authenticity of supernatural phenomena took place was 1978. Their are a number of cogent reasons for
Giving fresh thought to the process, of which the most persuasive is the development of social media.

This document is just another example of this pope finding the notion of declaring Mary Mediatrix of All Grace, ridiculous. He says She is just a Mother. He said people like St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. Louis deMontfort simply overexcited about their mother when they promoted Mary such as they did. And you point out well how convenient it is for clerical leaders would want to discount apparitions and messages that warn against errant clerics. I personally think that this pope does not like Marian Catholics because they are almost always traditional..... And we already know what he thinks of traditional Catholics.

You wrote -- "At one level, changing the categorisations available so that the possibility of authenticating a private revelation or an apparition no longer exists may be arguable on a pragmatic basis. “Heaven” intervenes seldom, most phenomena carry a level of ambiguity with them, and it may well be that “Nihil obstat” is an appropriately circumspect response from the centre."
Well, that leaves aside the generality that the vast majority of Divine Interventions or private revelations etc. are in no need whatsoever of any authentification, as they provide nothing that is intended for sharing with other persons, let alone a local church let alone the Church as a whole.
There was absolutely nothing theologically novel in whatever part of a private revelation I may have received ; except to me personally, none of it in words BTW, but it was what I needed to know and understand for my own conversion to Faith, to Christianity, and to Catholicism. That and the Holy Scripture led me to the Church.
In that perspective, I think that "Heaven" intervenes a lot more frequently than you suggest ; including ofttimes without the person at the heart of it being consciously aware of it.

    • @DrGAshenden
      @DrGAshenden  3 месяца назад +11

In fact, I agree with you about heaven intervening - and I probably should’ve been more careful about how I phrased what I said. What I had in mind is major public revelation. I think what you were talking about is the supernatural intervention in the life of the believer from day-to-day. Which I agree is constant.

I wish I could remember who put out a video about our duty to obey apparitions that are directed by Our Lady for a specific group. The Miracle of the Sun was public, therefore we are more bound to take it seriously.
I do not believe Medjugorje because two ordinaries rejected it after interviewing the seers themselves. Also the messages not only contradict themselves but also contradict the Magesterium. That should concern everyone. Donal Foley has examined the evidence and the messages at length along with many theologians going back to the original days of it. The disobedience there is staggering.

Thank you for your channel and thought provoking content.
I had a think about this video and read the comments. ( the video has only been up for a few hours.)
Some suggest that Mary cannot intecede for us at all.
This led me to wonder about all the saints?
(To follow the train of thought of that comment)
Does this not take us in full circle and make us protestants?
I came from a protestant background and found solace in the Saints found in Catholism and Orthodoxy.
Their stories and also praying to them.
To strip the ability to pray to Mary and to the saints (if I follow that logic) will change Catholism profoundly.
I have been following both Catholism and Orthodoxy since 2020 and many say (is it true? or biased) that many are leaving Catholism for Orthodoxy because of the changes over the last few decades.
As I wish to do the RCIA, to enter the Catholic Church, and I say the rosary daily...
am I to expect the rug to be pulled out from under me, as a baby Catholic?
The rosary has been a bringer of peace and purpose into my life.
    Thank you for your video.
I will pray and hopefully be given guidance.
(I have been going to local churches, looking for a traditional one, but have yet to find it.)
I did find (when I went 2 years ago) traditional mass in the Greek Orthodox church that was profoundly moving.
There is only one traditional mass in this country and that is a plane ride away.
Until recently I was saying the Noetic Prayer (Orthodoxy) daily, since 2020, and shifted over to the rosary.
It deepened my experience and has led me to explore Catholism more.
Maybe one of your videos adresses the move of Catholics to Orthodoxy?

Thank you Dr Ashenden. Our Lady of Good Success in modern day Equito way back in the late 1500s seems to have been speaking of our present times. She mentions the one who should speak will remain silent. The present pope is silent as our church burns from inside out. It seems that only God Himself will put things aright. We are in for a very, very rough ride. We the faithful should go to confession and receive the Holy Eucharist often. We should stay squeaky clean by avoiding mortal sin. The time will soon come when our world will be unrecognizable. Our pope wants to control the narrative. Stay in the barque of Peter. The flip side, however, is that it has also removed the bishop's power to denounce and protect their flock from such misleading events and false prophets. Thank you Dr. Ashenden. Good insights. One issue that is Akita, Japan. The local Bishop approved it, but on questionable grounds imho. A local bishop also gave his 'imperator' to 'The Devine Will' by Luisa Piccarreta which had a global following, and it has been denounced by the Vatican. They said that the Bishop was too quick to approve it. Link: ruclips.net/video/nt9-X-hDJeM/видео.html - This shows that while a local Bishop may indeed have the best knowledge of the situation he may not always have the discernment to adjudicate it spiritually. This happened only last year. So, I can understand why the Vatican says local Bishops may not be allowed to judge finally, but no doubt that they will be asked to contribute all their insights nevertheless.

If it was legitimate, Our Lady would have protected those associated with the messages from mortal sin. This is not at all what happened. One of them married a beauty queen and lives in Massachusetts. Not one entered religious life, instead they live in luxury.

As for the apparitions, there have been 3 bishops commissions on the matter, the last one ordered by the late Pope Benedict. The result of this commission was to declare the first 7 days of the apparitions to be authentic. As for the visionaries they are ordinary people making a living like anyone else in order to care for their families. They certainly do not live in luxury. the FOUNDATION OF THE FAITH.
Pope Francis said that the only means to know the Virgin Mary is the Gospel, excluding the narrative of any seer that does not match with Her personality as the Gospel exposes clearly, the humbleness and fidelity to the Lord.
So, we can raise these questions about the alleged apparitions:
    - Would the Virgin Mary ask us to pray Ave Maria? I affirm: NO!
    - Would the Virgin Mary introduce Herself saying: "I am the Mother of God"? I affirm: NO!
    - Would the Virgin Mary ask for a Chapel be built in Her honour? I affirm: NO!
    - Would the Virgin Mary pray the Rosary reciting Ave Maria? I affirm: NO!
    - Would the Virgin Mary command a little girl to drink dirty water from a puddle and crawl on the ground eating grass like an animal? I affirm: NO!
    - Would the Virgin Mary print Her image on a medal or mantel in order to be venerated? I affirm: NO!
    - Would the Virgin Mary impose inhumane penance to 7 and 8 year old children and show them terrifying scenes of the Hell? I affirm: NO!
    - Would the Virgin Mary confide secrets that the Pope could not know to a 10 year old girl.
We can go on and on analysing all the "apparitions" and conclude that no one stand up.
We can also with a rational thought say that the nature of the Virgin Mary remains human and cannot know each one of Her hundreds of millions "sons" scattered all around the world and stay by the side of each one to protect them at the same time, 24 hours by day. To do this God would have to give Her His powers of being omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent, making Her a goddess like Him.
I see that the Catholic Church made a huge theological mistake relating to the Virgin Mary and sold to the faithful
Now it is very hard and painful to correct it and the Vatican is trying to do it. And more is to come.

Does the Virgin Mary allow you to write all this about her, allowing you to exercise your ‘sure’ knowledge? I affirm: Yes. Does God allow evil in the world? I affirm: Yes. Does that mean he is not God?
Our Lady loves you; she respects you. She even respects your ‘ability’ to choose to arrive at false conclusions, she respects your flawed, uninspired reasoning and your putting yourself above the Church of ages - the Church that has also always believed in revelation (not the Bible alone) - the very Church that her own Son founded. Think again. Why would she do this? There is a price to pay for love and Christ paid it, but, in His mercy, He asks us to take on a little share of that payment, too, so that we can be like Him (though obviously, NEVER Him) - think on that! Through suffering and ridicule, we are given the chance to prove our love for Him. How else could we prove it? Therefore, we may well write out a list of ‘perceived’ indignities given to us - Job fighting with the angel again. You have not understood that the Virgin Mary was made much more than a human being at the foot of the cross. Blessed be the Mother of God, Mary most holy, whose only intention is to lead each of us to her Son out of love for God - the Holy Trinity, and us.

@@afterlate8866 Blessed be the Virgin Mary! She deserves all the honour given to Her! But can you tell me wich of my statements are wrong and why? Do you think She feels comfortable having hundreds millions asking Her protection 24 hours per day, at the same time, knowing that she cannot tackle with it all? Do you think She seeks devotees for Herself and not for Jesus? Does she feel pleased hearing the "Consecration to the Virgin Mary", wich should be to the Holy Father according to the First Commandment?

Why would you conclude that Mary would object to any of the scenarios you pose. Because of her "humbleness and fidelity" to the Lord? - indeed, none showed greater than her. And yet, as great as her humility and fidelity to God is, she was still able to confidently proclaim that 'from now on all generations shall call me blessed'. This is an astonishing proclamation for such a humble heart as hers. Was this a humble heart, getting caught up in the excitement of the moment? Or making a prediction, or going out on a limb and assuming what God's plan held for her? No, this wasn't her most humble and abiding heart speaking for herself. That would make no sense. She was merely acknowledging what God Himself has rendered. - "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord."
She doesn't want accolade or attention for her own benefit, but.. If God wants all to call her blessed, if God wants eyes on her, if God wishes to establish devotion to her Immaculate Heart - for His own purposes - then Mary is all in. There is no other option for her nature. So she, in effect, becomes her own cheerleader, so to speak.
And so none of the scenarios you list are necessarily going against her scriptural nature, if they lead to accomplish God's purposes. I hope this helps you.

@@Barbara-zp8iu you too, and I, are blessed! Have you forgotten what Jesus said in the Gospels about " those who do the will of God...." and " those who believed Without seeing"? Have you forgotten that Jesus gave us the same status as His mother and His brothers? You are suggesting that the Virgin Mary abandoned Her virtue of humility because was chosen by God to become the mother of His son. You are WRONG! What I suggested is that if a woman appeared it was not the Virgin Mary! And now I affirm: The Virgin Mary appeared not! The narratives are fantasies and liars! And I affirm as ABSOLUTELY TRUTH that the Virgin Mary wants devotion to Jesus and not to Herself and wants prayers to the Holy Father, as Jesus commanded, and not to Herself!

@@pedroantonioalleAt the foot of the cross Jesus turned to His mother and said, “Woman, behold thy son.” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, thy mother.” John 19:26. Becoming John’s mother she becomes our mother, too, since John, the disciple, is one man, but also representative of mankind. Now, why did our Lord say she was our Mother? He did not need to say it. Why did Jesus give Our Lady the role of Mother of mankind which is what he means when He tells John the disciple that she is now his mother? Why did He say that John was now her son? Clearly he wasn’t, in biological and human terms.
In so doing, Jesus made the Virgin mother more than human, more than a creature; further, being the spouse of the Holy Spirit she has been given a very full share of the divinity by God, Himself. This is what allows her to be omnipresent (and by the way, some saints have been seen in more than one place - St Padre Pio to mention but one). The Mother of God, a creature like us, but who, through God’s mercy, and His plan, is now our Mother. Of course she has a share in supernatural powers, so shall we, to a far lesser extent, if we get to Heaven. What are you saying then - that Jesus should not have done this? Could not have done this?
Our Lady is, and never has been, in competition with her son; you (none of us) have anything to fear on that silly score. Our Lady works WITH her Son because He has asked her to and she is obedient; She never works against Him - that is ridiculous and a preposterous idea! (If ever she could work against Him she would most certainly NOT be the Mother of God!). She is our advocate, our mother. She has asked for chapels to be built so that within the tabernacle of those chapels her Son, in the Eucharist, can be ‘housed’ and wherever her Son is, so is she; they are united. If we honour Our Lady, we honour Her Son and Our Lord does not mind us coming to Him through Her - in fact, it is He who encourages us to do so because He, above all, loves His Mother! . In purely human terms, we turn to our mothers when we are afraid that our fathers might ‘explode’ when we’ve done something wrong. We hope our mother will ‘say a good word for us’ and limit our father’s anger. This is in human terms. We have this pattern because it was made by God, not by me, nor by you, not by the Church. That human pattern is ‘replicated’ in the supernatural. So why should we not ask our Heavenly Mother to intercede for us? God will listen to her pure and totally self-less prayers long before He ‘hears’ our poor, selfish ones. So….why should we not pray to Our Lady when God, Himself, has asked us to? Why should we not pray the Holy Rosary reminding us of all the events in Jesus’ life that we know about in the Bible? Why should Our Lady not leave a printed image of herself on a mantel to help her children know whom She is. Why should we not thank Her for Her steadfast obedience to God and total humility? Can you enter her mind? Do you know God’s plans for revealing ‘secrets’ to a ten year old - a girl whose purity and child-likeness is what God loves. The Popes have been humble enough not to be ‘jealous’ of hearing the ‘secrets’ second hand, why shouldn’t you be? You write of Our Lady possibly ‘feeling uncomfortable’ because billions of people are praying to Her 24/7 but Our Lady is more than a mere human; she has a huge share of the divinity given to Her by Her Son. You can’t have it both ways; why would billions of people, over two thousand years, pray to her if She did not share in the divinity of God, and in which case ‘discomfort’ does not come into it. Finally, the Catholic Church is not a market and sells nothing; it passes on the Word of God, and through years of thorough and lengthy deliberation, as well as constant and consistent prayer to the Holy Spirit, through all the accusations, the pointed fingers, the blame game, the lies, it speaks the Truth.
