      Well, you know what's interesting is if you consider David Dunn and Elijah Price's powers and abilities on a metaphoric level, this is most likely what it would be like if Superman and Lex Luthor were watered down extremely.

      Well, I liked this more than Kickass, because Kickass was a bit too teenage and campy, while this was more serious and sober.
      I also remember Dark Man, starring Liam Neeson, but that was a long time ago, and he was all hideous and deformed, etc. The style was also a bit absurd.

      It is not retarded. The Orange man was going to be Kevin. Mr. Dunn was going to rescue the three girls; that was the original script. However, because M. Night S could not work the split story into unbreakable to show the personalities Kevin had, he decided to make it a stand alone film. So instead of the three girls kidnapped by Kevin, we have the three kids kidnapped by Orange man.

      Thats exactly what I mean. A scene that shows such darkness and horror is shifted into something very moving - the music and the simplicity of the direction with no edits from the moment his arm goes around his neck. We just watch a battle between good and evil from that point on and the music encompasses that totally. We can only imagine what the man in orange has done during his life and our every man hero brings that terrible chapter to an end.

  • @MP197742
    @MP197742 9 лет назад +944

    The thing that blows me away is, the way this scene starts is about as good of directing as you will see in a movie. It shows him in his vulnerable state being the same height as the kids in the background. Then as he stands up, they subtly look up and the focus changes to them and it's like they are in awe of a man that has to be 10 feet tall. And the way it's all perfectly timed with a great score ... It's just brilliantly done.
    And this is the guy that brought you The Happening, The Last Airbender and After Earth. It just doesn't make sense.

      This is easily one of my favorite directed scenes, just from the cinematography you feel so many emotions, like fear and suspense in the scene with the curtains flapping open to reveal bits of the scene, anxiety and powerlessness when the pool cover begins to slip and David is sucked into the pool, and finally triumph when he rises above the kids that saved him, and when he's choking out the Orange man, as the camera slowly rises to the ceiling in one continuous shot. Of course James Newton Howard's score is equally responsible for the emotion you feel in the scene.

    Just saw a movie like a week ago. Absolutely loved it.
    What absolutely stuns me about this scene is how brutally simple it is. There is no actual fighting going on. No dialogues or screams as they often do in the movies these days.
    *He just chokes him. Slowly. Patiently.*
    You can see Orange Man's desperation as he tries to fight back but nothing helps: the protagonist keeps holding on. Truly unbreakable.
    What enhanced the effect even further for me was that i was still convinced that at any moment the movie could come around and show that the protagonist wasn't a super hero after all and he would fail. And then this "fight" happens.
    The moment i saw those dents on the walls, saw how the protagonist wouldn't let go of bastard's neck without making even a single sound of pain or flinching - i finally realized... That it's all true.
    He IS the Unbreakable.

    There are a bunch of comments that really nail the dynamics of this scene and Unbreakable in general, but what always stood out to me is the brilliant simplicity of David's "costume." It's just a security guard's rain poncho, yet the way Shyamalan films him is so evocative. The way he's cast against the rain, light and shadow. His face is always masked in darkness, and everyone sees him as this looming silhouette.
    He comes off as a combination of our culture's most iconic superheroes. His appearance makes one think of Batman, dark, mysterious, foreboding. Yet his abilities bring to mind Superman, powerful, unstoppable, otherworldly. And his danger sense and humble origin reminds me of Spider-Man as well. So much of this is subtly conveyed to us, and we never lose the feeling that this is a seemingly ordinary man who puts on a uniform and becomes something more than a man.
    We live in a world now where new, giant, action-packed comic book movies come out every year (and, don't get me wrong, I love seeing most of them), but somehow this is still the most striking portrayal of a superhero I've ever seen. Props to Shyamalan, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson and everyone else involved for making this gem of a movie.

    God, I can't even watch this without crying. Two developing children, despite having had their lives torn to shreds in the day preceeding, and without regard for the rain which has soaked them to the bone, find themselves awe struck by the bravery and grace of a normal man who came into their home for no reason other than to make things Right. What would've been, at best, an event from which neither of them would likely fully recover, has been transformed into something which is still tragic but now presents a glimmer of goodness and possibility.
    I think this scene probably speaks a lot more to people who had a "rough"(and/or completely horrifying) childhood, and it personally brought me a lot of strength in a time when I was feeling like I didn't have much to offer to the world. Thanks, Mr. Shyamalan.

    The scene feels insanely real, at least to me. I'd say this is one of the most memorable fight scenes I've ever seen in a movie and no doubt needed absolute minimal choreographing . You can truly feel the desperation of both characters, there's nothing superficial about it. No words exchanged, they never meet eyes or stare each other down, no bravado dialogue, and the good/evil costumes are stripped down to their bare bones. (Orange Jumpsuit= Criminal/Convict. Faceless/Caped Crusader= Superhero) The Orange Man didn't need to know who was killing him, he knew he was scum and his fate came for him, it wasn't personal, this was good beats evil in a very down to earth way. I would watch this badass in an anorak choking people out over some acrobat throwing punches in spandex any day. RIP Shyamalan

The poncho gives him a cool costumed hero look, The only thing missing is that he doesn't have a cool superhero name to go with it, The newspapers just call him "Hero" which is just a bit too generic. Mr. Glass is the only one with the cool name in the movie. Even the Orange Man is never actually called that name in the film but it could have possibly been a newspaper nickname like the Zodiac Killer or Son of Sam. Criminals obviously have more need for secret identities than heroes of course.

    • @DekkarJr
      @DekkarJr 4 года назад +5

      David's technique was amateur actually, he didn't have hip control like is taught in jiu jitsu or judo, without control of the hips/torso the rest of the vertabrae can move and so u can slip your neck out quite easily. A trained jiu jitsu practitioner should be able to choke someone unconscious in roughly 5-10 seconds with intermediate level of training. It doesn't have anything to do with strength either, it's about leverage and technique. It happens constantly in mixed martial arts, once a rear naked choke is sunk in and hip control is properly established the forearm of one arm should be totally blocking the artery on one side and the bicep/forearm of the other arm blocking the other side. Even after consciousness ceases there is still involuntary breathing as well, which is why they stop a match as soon as a person taps/submits to a choke so they can be revived quickly without brain damage. I'm 5 foot 2 115lbs, female, brown belt in brazilian jiu jitsu and there are at least 5 chokes I could put on a grown man into who didn't know the steps to defend them that would render him unconscious immediately. Rear Naked, triangle choke using the legs, gogoplata choke using the legs, 10 finger guillotine from the front and a Head in Arm choke are all techniques I've used in the gym and if you don't have any idea how to defend them, you are screwed, even the biggest guys will tap immediately because of panic.
      The thing is that when someone doesn't know how to defend against a choke they just panic. First rule is fight the hands, and pull the arm don't try and body slam him off or elbow him. In this case Bruce was using a Gable Grip for the most part with his hands clasped together even though he started with the rear naked choke but quickly lost it - cus he didn't have control of the hips. The best way to choke a man out would be jump one his back applying a body trianngle and apply the rear naked choke at the exact same time, pulling him back with your entire body in one full motion. bjj-world.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/roger-gracie-x-Kevin-Randleman.jpg (image). Even though Kevin Randleman in this picture much larger and definitely more physically stronger than Roger Gracie, Gracie's technique here is so immediate and tight that he just immediately wins. The only way to defend against this would be for Randleman to reach with both of his hands and pull the leveraging arm down(Gracie's left arm), instead he's only reaching with his left hand, pulling the leveraging arm down that stops both of the forearms from applying pressure to the blood supply if properly prepared to defend this technique you would see the defender simultaneously rolling to Randleman's right side (this puts pressure on the ankle and loosens the grip of the body triangle on the torso.) The general public does not know these techniques tho, so most people aren't aware of how to defend themselves in a step by step series where you remain calm and simply follow steps to the best of your ability.
      But yeah, a real properly applied rear naked choke doesn't take more than a few seconds to work on someone who doesn't know how to defend it. TBH Even with his superhuman strength, it took Bruce ALONG time to get the guy unconscious. A guy of that size, maybe slightly above average height and build, maybe 5 10 - to 6 foot ish, maybe 180-200ish, assuming I get the element of surprise like bruce did, I would have him out in 5-10 seconds. Biggest guy I've choked out was about 6 foot 6, maybe 280, he was a body builder that was starting as a white belt in a class I was teaching. If he doesn't know how to grapple at all, he's screwed whether I was his size or a tiny petite woman. Actually generally speaking, smaller students make better jiu jitsu artists because they don't rely on their frame or physical strength to try and muscle out of a position, thus smaller students generally develop better technique. Now if we were straight greco roman style wrestling, yeah he could throw me around, but jiu jitsu is all about leverage. I've done some seminars for law enforcement, and even theydon't have a very fundamental understanding of grappling - if they did they wouldn't have to rely on their weaponry and tools as a first resort. I know it sounds like I'm bragging lol, but It's really just a matter of proper technique.
      Still an amazing scene and and amazing movie regardless of a technical opinion.

      @Andrew Brindley Read it through again, I didn't say any of what you are saying about it taking away from the movie or the point of the scene. I was just offering the knowledge of 1 human being can control another human being to their death or their eventual unconsciousness. Listen man, this is one of my favorite movies of ALL TIME, and I am not giving a critique that is meant to disparage it any way. Was just trying to make a point that had David done X y and Z instead of going in blind with no grappling training, he would've been much more successful. Clearly that made you really angry, and I want you to know that I apologize for that; it wasn't my intent. And no we don't always wear protective gear and set up on a yoga mat lol. I know we all get pissed sometimes and some things set us off, but just chill mah bro, I'm on your side even if you're spoutin a lot of ignorance about jiu jitsu. This movie is amazing and you and I can both agree on that. I was just trying to delineate between what I know is applicable in real life and what isn't.

But sometimes saving the day from horrible people or events isn't always glamorous, or action packed. They wouldn't have costumes or a nickname. They would look like regular people. And our hero would face dark, gritty, and sometimes scary moments most would be afraid to step up to. Like fighting a home invader or serial killer. This is the best scene out of the whole movie.

    @casbyness Год назад +6

    As great as it is, isolating this segment of the movie on its own robs it of a significant portion of its power. Much of the trancendental effect the scene and accompanying score has on a viewer stems from the fact that it comes immediately after the truly shocking and horrific 'low point' of David almost drowning. The film sets up his weakness to water very modestly, and given M. Night's penchant for twists the pool scene carries a very real terror to it - it's extremely reasonable for an invested audience to jump to the conclusion that David is simply going to drown.
    Then, just moments after that abyssal low point you have the rescue by the children (David's good deeds already steering him on the correct path) and then a heartbeat later you get 'the rematch', except this time the battle is fair and everything you have learned throughout the movie has already provided concrete reassurance that no matter what happens or how many times the Orange Man smashes David into the bedroom wall - when good and evil fight on level terms, good cannot lose.
    It's the cliche juxtaposition of the 'second act low point' and the heroic triumph, simultaneously taken to its logical extreme yet also distilled down to its absolutely most basic elements. Like the movie as a whole, this ending isn't really about comic books or superheroes at all - it's trying to tell us where that childlike concept itself comes from. It's reminding us how superheroes are just a development upon heroes, mythological gods, fables, angels, fairies, faith, memories or deceased loved ones, passing all the way back over the horizon of time to the original base concept of simply being awestruck by a courageous stranger who, through sheer determination alone, averts an arbitrary tragedy. Rescuing a cat from a tree, putting out a fire, grabbing a child before it falls to its death, etc etc. The movie isn't about what superheroes or comic books are, it's about what we all are. It's about what's admirable in us.

    One of the great fight scenes. The power of the music, the single take as the camera floats up towards the ceiling (signifying David's growing belief; his metamorphosis into a mythical hero, gliding over all), then the low-key choreography, a physical struggle rather than unrealistic fisticuffs and all that.
    Forgot how much I love this film. It really hits the mark in so many ways.

    It beat the superhero craze to the punch.

    What if i told you the "big fight" was with a janitor with no superhuman powers?
    What if i told you the main villain was in a wheelchair, and his bones could break easier than glass?
    What if i told you the hero couldn't save everybody and was just a few hours late? What if told you just before this two little girls saved him from drowning in a pool?
    What if i told you the hero was a poor security guard, who's family life was crumbling?
    What if i told you his superhero costume was a rain poncho?
    And what if I told you, that combination would make the greatest superhero story known to man?

  • @gsimon123

    Shyamalan went out and made a grounded authentic thriller that looks at the symbolism and themes behind all superheroes well before Nolan showed up with Batman Begins and made it "cool" and well before this current superhero craze. Frankly... he never got the respect he deserved for this film which is clearly his best work.
    Maybe if he had gotten the recognition he deserved for this he would have continued to make more works like it in the future... maybe a sequel. But the public is stupid and wants more crap like Avengers. No surprise that Shyamalan slipped... it reminds me of John Carpenter with The Thing. He had made one of the greatest horror movies ever and was canned for it even when he was the next hottest director coming off of Halloween - just like Shyamalan coming off of the sensation that was the Sixth Sense. Instead of branching off into this new direction that they honestly believed was their better achievement they abandoned that path to try and recapture the hearts of their viewers by trying to repeat the success of their first hit. This lead both men to a downward spiral of trying to recapture and rekindle something that needs to be moved away from... but perhaps it is now too late.
    Like Carpenter... why try hard when the masses fail to respect your masterpiece?

      Comparing Unbreakable with the Nolan films is retarded. Nolan's Batman films are known for the "symbolism" and "themes" mostly because it was done for an existing character in a different light, which is why it's popular for the most part. Unbreakable is mostly a thriller which deals with the idea of destiny and it's completely original, not based off anything. Unbreakable is a great film though, but the shitty epilogue subtitles ruin the end and the dialogue is pretty awkward.

    This scene is the most important one in the entire film. It is when Dunn realizes what he is meant to be, and his capabilities, and what to use them for. This sequence is genius. But it also shows how he can't save everyone...but now he can make a difference. Classic evil versus good here too, in keeping with the "Comic Book" theme the entire film is based on. Dunn cannot be hurt, except by water. So the children are there to help him. He doesn't stand alone. He needs others to help too.

      I may be in the minority but his movies are all really good. It's the meaning behind them that makes them so powerful. For example, in Lady in the Water its about how each and everyone of us has a purpose in life, now matter how small. If you ever saw it, you will remember that the community worked together to help the mermaid go back to safety. Everyone played a role and for them to accomplish the mission, everyone was required to participate. In that movie, the guy people thought was crazy because he only worked out half of his body ended up being the protector that the dogs feared. The Village, my all time favorite shows what people are capable of doing to protect those they love. The only movie of his I've not seen has been the last air bender and that's because Im not into Avatar.

    I love this movie so much and this scene makes the movie, it really gives all that patience of waiting to see what Dunn does with his amazing gift....its to be shared. But for me, I can never escape from the fact I would love that jacket, I work in security and outdoor activities, and rain is a huge issue for me, where would I get a jacket like Dunn's, any help would be so grateful as winter is upon us, and for the past week I've got rained on, I have all kinds of coats for wet weather but a smock style like the main character wears would be close to perfect.

    Beautiful scene. Seeing so many interesting interpretations in the comments section shows how truly poetic it is. For me, I found it interesting that David chokes him from behind. Remember even with his freakish strengths this is still his first victim and he's well....vulnerable and maybe has some self-doubt. He then perfectly times the choke. Seems to indicate he had a 'plan'. But, even with a plan - he gets knocked against the wall pretty bad but he never.. he never releases the hold. This is where the true hero in him is born and his purpose forged.
