This was the beginning of the changing of the guard. The 8.0L Viper was completely dominate and the C5.r started with the 6.0L LS1.r but even with better handling couldn't match the power of the V10 Viper. They quickly changed to the 7.0L LS7.r. and even w the penalty of smaller air restrictors the added torque was needed to compete w the 8.0L V10. A great time in racing, and IMO the LS7.r is the best race engine ever built. Great upload.
the Viper was always neutered to give the Vette and others a chance - they were always running on 8 cylinders so 2 empty cylinders gave the vette a chance.
@@InTheZone85 I don't know who told u that, but that's not true at all. IMSA or ALMS had no limit on the number of cylinders in Prototypes or GTS back then. The BMW and Ferrari Protos had V12s. Because chevrolet make a new generation GT1 car, corvette C6r and Dodge never made new GTS-r untill 2013, and let me remind you that this car won 2014 Tudor ALMS champioships, and won against new Corvette C7r. (Viper GTS-r program was cancelled after this huge win because GM wants Corvette to win)
The corvette handling was a little better but the viper had the stronger engine of the two. They both traded shots and made for good racing. Its ashame the viper was discontinued. The ford gt and covette have been putting a hurting on the Europeans and the viper would too
I was at this race , young man learning about performance cars, loved the vipers ( the # 91 in particular ) was always the fastest of the vipers ( driven by Olivier Beretta and Karl Wendlinger ) finally were beaten , the corvette needed a lot of changes to finally beat the viper , a wider track ( offered more mechanical grip ) and a larger engine ( from 6 liters to 7 liters ) got them closer as well ( there was no 7 liter production car corvette at this time...cheating 😉.... the viper was closer to its production counter part ( street version ) than the vette was... but Chevy was determined to win...check out the Daytona 24 hrs ( 2000 ) race for another epic clash between the vettes and vipers

This is 2 years late but where the hell are you getting any information for the ZR1 being the ring leader? I’m guessing you’re talking about the Nurburgring and if that’s correct the Viper reached a faster time than the ZR1, and the drivers of the Vipers even said they had more potential but it was cut short because one of the Vipers crashed whilst testing.
