Elton John - Sartorial Eloquence

- This 1980 track from ‘21 at 33’ followed Elton’s Top 10 hit ‘Little Jeannie’. Sartorial Eloquence was written with new wave singer Tom Robinson after they were introduced by Peter Gabriel at a charity concert in 1978. The title wasn’t favoured by Elton’s US record company who insisted on renaming it ‘Don’t Ya Wanna Play This Game No More’ somewhat losing the poetic quality. Sartorial Eloquence features on the upcoming Elton: Jewel Box, out November 13th. Pre-order here: EltonJohn.lnk....
Elton’s first solo #1 in the UK gets the stripped-down treatment this evening, further revealing the classic beauty of the song’s lyric and melody. Both Elton and Bernie Taupin have singled out this track as a favorite from their five-decade long catalogue, with the lyricist noting that it is somewhat of a companion piece to ‘Your Song’.

I am 56 years old
I’m ok
This man has given the world the most beautiful music.
He is sent by Angels.
Thanks
One of many gems from EJ...40 years old song, still as fresh as ever...
I've been listening to this song since it was released (I'm 58), and I never grow tired of it!
Hey
Hey
Timeless gem from the master. 🤩
Great song that brings back so many memories.
God I love Elton John
Canção maravilhosa! 😘🤗👏👏👏
I do too. 51years longtime fan here.
How can People Dislike such a masterpiece
It’s the critics
It's a nice song but doesn't have a lyric that would be a commercial hit
Yeah, so called "expert" critics suck.
I love Elton so much. He’s been my hero since I’ve been 9 years old.
Me too!!! My intro was a 45 of Lucy in the Sky!! I wish I still had it!!
I think he is the best musician to ever walk the face of the earth 😆
My intro was finding Honky Chateau in Goodwill. I remember that I didn't know who he was. I just thought he looked cool. The first record I bought at a regular store was a single of Island Girl. I don't know how old I was... The former came out in 1972 and the latter in 1975, so I was between 8 and 11.
7 for me. 54 now
“21 at 33” is an underrated album in Elton’s discography; it has a low-key and lonesome vibe. Not his best, but it sure hits the spot when the time is right. Thanks for the very cool and rare video, I enjoyed it very much!
I find it definatly middle of the road and mediocre compared to all that came before and a lot after. The Fox is a much more diverse better produced rich sounding record than 21@33 which to me sounded half baked and workmanlike
I love the "21 at 33" album.
21 at 33 is really good. If it would came out when he was popular in 1973-76... I have no doubt it would of been no.1... that being said it went to 13....
The beauty of this song is unrivaled by current music 🔥🙌😭
One of the classic unknown songs!!! So happy to see this out there for the world to see!! Bless Elton and Bernie and the Band and all wh contributed to his endless gifts!!
One of my favorite Elton John songs!
One of Elton's forgotten gems which I've always loved but this is the first time I've ever seen the video.
Even Elton's weaker songs, are head and shoulders above other songwriters. He's a genius.
The one criticism of this song that always stuck in my brain was "gimmicky chorus"
It’s a really strong song - very autobiographical talking to himself
There is something about this song that catches me...I love the chorus with its harmonies. A solid tune that has classic Elton all over it. I've missed hearing it.
Absolutely.

Aesthetically pleasing
This is why he is a legend simply amazing!
He's proved countless times how much a legend he is!

I wish I could play and sing like Elton John. He's been such an inspiration to me musically.

Just practice dude. It’s not that hair. Just put your soul into it. ✌🏻
@@sailorkawaiibarbiemoon1351 I've been practicing for more than 30 years. I do have my own style which I'm happy with, but I do have Elton envy. It just seems to come so naturally to him.
聴いても聴いても飽きの来ない名曲とはこの曲のことですね。エルトンもかなり歌い込んだと聞いています。これからも愛聴します。
I love Elton John just the way he is. For me he is the most beloved singer forever. I love this video.
A sumptuous underrated number from the equally underrated 21 AT 33 album. I suppose it wasn't commercial enough for the charts. A better follow-up to "Little Jeannie" might have been the energetic "Two Rooms At The End Of The World," the historical travelogue "Chasing The Crown," or the sweeping "Give Me The Love." Because of its subject matter, "White Lady White Powder" wouldn't have made it to DJ's playlists, but for me, it's 21's greatest song!
ELTON JOHN IS LIKE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR,BLESS YOUR HEART ELTON JOHN.🕺🏼🙋♂️😻😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍💋🙏
Very enthusiastic

Elton has so many hidden gems, it’s a shame he won’t play them live anymore.
Let's be fair, at 73 his voice would struggle with a lot of his stuff prior to 1988. He could take this down a key or two to get the notes but his phrasing would still struggle with some of the lines in this.
In no way a hidden gem! Definitely on my list of favorites.

Some day it was bound to happen, @Elias Sandgren. Elton is still with us, though. Hopefully for many years yet. Have a listen to "60 Years On"...His own, younger man´s take on how old(er) age would be. Ten years before this..Personally, I`d say things turned out rather well for Pinball, all things considered..He´s one of perhaps three people in this world whose name still is known in the ENTIRE world, more than fifty years after we first heard of him. He and his collaborators have given us an immense treasure. And still do, to this day. A century from now he will still be there, through his music and his ways. And for that, we all love him! And them..This is no Dream Team Taupin lyric, but as we know Elton has had a few lyricists. And a few hits whose lyrics have been written by others. Such as "Sartorial Eloquence", "Blue Eyes" ++. Point being, the whole catalogue is pure musical magic..There are not many in this world capable of what Elton and his band have accomplished. And we "mere mortals" should all count ourselves lucky to have had them all among us for close to 75 years..In all, Britain has a few megastars, but Elton´s in a league of his own...imo...Just remember that it has come at a cost, too. For them all.

Like all of his songs, LOVE the piano in this one.Beautiful!
I love that he is putting out his old stuff and old unreleased stuff! Cool!
Even after 40 years Elton John still surprises us
I love this song so much!! 💕
Its beautiful
The best ✨
I love Elton's early 80s music. It might not have been his happiest days, but he sure made excellent music!
He did great in the 70's too.
A genius and a legend. God bless him.
Omg, his eyelashes 😍, this man has everything, so perfect!!
I remember listening to a beautiful voice on the radio in France in 1980 she said ''ho Jeannie little jeannie' and ''sartoriale eloquence'' I cry with emotion my first album bought was 21 at 33 elton could be proud to call his work 21 albums composed 33 years since I am a passionate collector his voice painted with such beautiful paintings of masters...... the world was so beautiful at the time
Voice of an angel 👼
We’ve really been blessed with content from Elton lately. I can’t wait to get the Jewel Box to listen for hours. ❤️ Also, '21 at 33' is an incredible album. We’re truly lucky to have him.
His best album for me x
21 at 33 is a beautiful album. Underrated only because, written by a genius, it didn't make the expectations of those expecting geniality at every corner. I always loved it.
Amazing voice
I haven't heard this song before and I'm sad I didn't
It’s off 21 at 33. Little Jeannie is on it, too. The room resembles the cover art of The Fox, my fave Elton album. I love when he doesn’t wear glasses. He has those melty brown eyes, and long eyelashes.
I just heard it now.
New to me.
When I first did a couple years ago, I couldnt stop watching this video 😂
Same here
Beautiful and meaningful. Sir Elton is always diamonds
Elton John is just so great I'm so glad he's still alive
oh this is wonderful!
Elton just couldn't help himself could he? Churning out great songs one after the other!
tom robinson wrote the words
So it takes more than words to make a song. How many people would actually pay attention to the words without the music? I know for me, it's the music and the singing that attracts me to the song. Then I will learn the words to sing along with it. Without the music I never would hear the words.
Follow-up single to Little Jeannie in 1980, which was a #3 hit. Never could figure out why this song did not reach the top 40. 21 at 33 album.Live version in Central Park concert video.
It did make Top 40. It made it to #39 on 9/26/1980. In North America the song was released as "Don't Ya Wanna Play This Game No More?"
I've just watched the clip of Elton's Central Park performance which is absolutely BRILLIANT!!!
yup; it Did make the U.S. Pop top 40, peaking at no. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 ....
So many great songs from a wonderful artist.
I LOVE ELTHON
This great song should have been a bigger hit than it was 40 years ago! Glad that it is part of the upcoming Jewel box set!
Honestly one of my favorite Elton songs. The definition of a hidden treasure.
Where has this video been for 40 years!?
My favorite song from 21 at 33.
He doesn't look that bad with balding hair. I think it gives him some charm.
How does he have more hair here than in 1976?
@@gaminglegend he probably covered his baldness with hair from the side of his head. its a pretty common technique
true
He never looked bad.
His talent/skill really eclipses the hair issue. I agree he’s charming. I’ve had a crush for a very long time. oh boy
I love Tom Robinson. 20 years of saccharin and he sets Elton free. And boy does he fly.
Elton, beautiful Elton!
boy do i love this man and his music
One of Elton's best songs from the '80's !
Wonderful Sir Elton.
Great song from 1980 .
Legend
I love the music and songs and just can't get enough. Wish I had started listening sooner. After I saw Rocketman opened my eyes. Thanks Elton
I love this! 💓
One of the three best songs on the album. Elton has rarely recorded something so sarcastic and disdainful. I love it!
Simply amazing, all love for Elton
