Elton John - Sartorial Eloquence

  • This 1980 track from ‘21 at 33’ followed Elton’s Top 10 hit ‘Little Jeannie’. Sartorial Eloquence was written with new wave singer Tom Robinson after they were introduced by Peter Gabriel at a charity concert in 1978. The title wasn’t favoured by Elton’s US record company who insisted on renaming it ‘Don’t Ya Wanna Play This Game No More’ somewhat losing the poetic quality. Sartorial Eloquence features on the upcoming Elton: Jewel Box, out November 13th. Pre-order here: EltonJohn.lnk....
Elton’s first solo #1 in the UK gets the stripped-down treatment this evening, further revealing the classic beauty of the song’s lyric and melody. Both Elton and Bernie Taupin have singled out this track as a favorite from their five-decade long catalogue, with the lyricist noting that it is somewhat of a companion piece to ‘Your Song’.

My intro was finding Honky Chateau in Goodwill. I remember that I didn't know who he was. I just thought he looked cool. The first record I bought at a regular store was a single of Island Girl. I don't know how old I was... The former came out in 1972 and the latter in 1975, so I was between 8 and 11.

“21 at 33” is an underrated album in Elton’s discography; it has a low-key and lonesome vibe. Not his best, but it sure hits the spot when the time is right. Thanks for the very cool and rare video, I enjoyed it very much!

I find it definatly middle of the road and mediocre compared to all that came before and a lot after. The Fox is a much more diverse better produced rich sounding record than 21@33 which to me sounded half baked and workmanlike

A sumptuous underrated number from the equally underrated 21 AT 33 album. I suppose it wasn't commercial enough for the charts. A better follow-up to "Little Jeannie" might have been the energetic "Two Rooms At The End Of The World," the historical travelogue "Chasing The Crown," or the sweeping "Give Me The Love." Because of its subject matter, "White Lady White Powder" wouldn't have made it to DJ's playlists, but for me, it's 21's greatest song!

Let's be fair, at 73 his voice would struggle with a lot of his stuff prior to 1988. He could take this down a key or two to get the notes but his phrasing would still struggle with some of the lines in this.

Some day it was bound to happen, @Elias Sandgren. Elton is still with us, though. Hopefully for many years yet. Have a listen to "60 Years On"...His own, younger man´s take on how old(er) age would be. Ten years before this..Personally, I`d say things turned out rather well for Pinball, all things considered..He´s one of perhaps three people in this world whose name still is known in the ENTIRE world, more than fifty years after we first heard of him. He and his collaborators have given us an immense treasure. And still do, to this day. A century from now he will still be there, through his music and his ways. And for that, we all love him! And them..This is no Dream Team Taupin lyric, but as we know Elton has had a few lyricists. And a few hits whose lyrics have been written by others. Such as "Sartorial Eloquence", "Blue Eyes" ++. Point being, the whole catalogue is pure musical magic..There are not many in this world capable of what Elton and his band have accomplished. And we "mere mortals" should all count ourselves lucky to have had them all among us for close to 75 years..In all, Britain has a few megastars, but Elton´s in a league of his own...imo...Just remember that it has come at a cost, too. For them all.

So it takes more than words to make a song. How many people would actually pay attention to the words without the music? I know for me, it's the music and the singing that attracts me to the song. Then I will learn the words to sing along with it. Without the music I never would hear the words.
