I’ve been waiting for nearly 3 years for this game to finally get its flowers. This was a FANTASTIC overview of the run. You really nailed down why it’s so interesting and why it has limitless potential. Thanks for covering the run and covering me with it ^~^
PLEASE go follow this man! Absolutely deserves way more attention than he gets! 🙌
I truly agree,
Legends arceus doesn’t deserve the hate it gets
The game is awesome
i'll 100% subscribe
If I remember right, Wolfe once pointed out that the complexity difference between singles and doubles is that a singles turn has 81 possible board states and doubles has like 37636. Not accounting for generational gimmicks, and doubles only strategies like spread moves.
Not really an accurate representation though. That's just an abstract list of every possible option. The number of REASONABLY EXPECTED board states is much closer.
@@misirtere9836 it’s literally mathematically true, and realistically an understatement because it’s not accounting for things core mechanics that are only relevant in doubles like the prevalence of protect or dynamic speed interactions. It’s just a theoretical example, sure, but the difference in even expected board states is an order of magnitude.
@@banditrests it really isn't. Wolfe's math was both hilariously incorrect and very, very overly generous to the doubles side of the argument. Just as a start, his math assumed that swapping out caused a multiplication of possible board actions when it doesn't. Instead, it effectively adds only 2 extra options per mon (as opposed to singles where it adds 5 options each). In other words, the actual result is closer to 6^4 instead of what he got. Now, that's just the number of total options, not board states, but even for board states you aren't actually adding that much; partially because swapping out one of your pokemon immediately reduces the options the other mon has to one.
He also didn't remove identical board states, if you swap both of your mons it doesn't matter in what order you send out your other two options, the board state is the same because both mons are out at the same time either way.
Total board states is, amusingly, a rather simple equation: 22^4, or all possible options to the power of the pokemon count, which gets us... 234256 possible board states per move, until one side looses a pokemon which drastically decreases the amount of options available.
For singles, the math is obviously easier. It's just the amount of options squared. So 18^2 gets us... 324 possible board states a turn.
But this leaves something out: targeting pokemon, which adds... 2 options to each pokemon, realistically speaking (he assumed that targeting your own teammate was always a valid option, which it isn't). So this pushes it up to 331,776.
Buuuut then we take into account how long games last. We can assume a clean 60 for singles and a clean 15 for doubles, so doubles reaches 4.97 million board states while singles hits 19.4 thousand.
So that's a 2 orders of magnitude difference *without* accounting for losing pokemon, at which point things would begin to converge massively (and, let's be honest, this is still really generous towards Doubles, especially since it doesn't take into account spread moves or switch moves).
@@vyor8837 To be fair to Wolfey, if both Pokemon switch, it actually *does* matter who switches in to which side, because of which side the opponent targeted with attacks.
That only adds like one board state per turn though.
@@misirtere9836 that's taken care of by removing an option from 2 of the other mons.
I'll never forget how crazy my Legends Arceus game started. I got really lucky and happened to find a wild Eevee in the first area so then I evolve it into my favorite Pokemon (Umbreon) and while roaming the first area I found the Alpha Rapidash and was like "Ponyta evolves at level 40 so that Rapidash is probably Level 40." and my Eevee evolved into Umbreon at level 13 so I thought "Umbreon is super tanky. Let's go try to catch that Rapidash." And I did catch it which at that point I decided if I ran into an Alpha I would ALWAYS try and catch them for the rest of the game. And by the time I was finished in the first area and could go to the Kleavor fight part of the story I had somehow gained exactly the amount of stars so level 40 Pokemon would listen to me so I went to that Kleavor with all Pokemon in the teens except the level 40 Rapidash who would listen to me (I only had the Rapidash as a back-up though, wasn't using it since that'd be cheesing it). But that was all super funny.
You actually caught the Rapidash?? My ass ran away as soon as I saw the level 😅
@@asharpnotbflat Yeah, I caught them, lol! I love challenging enemies who are stronger than me. I enjoy the challenge and strategies.
I would never recommend a perfect dex run. Might be one of the most time consuming decisions I did
So, I am doing a shiny pokemon only playthrough, on my main account, with the goal of *fully* completing the pokedex (shiny locked legends can be hunted for in BDSP, iirc) and I don't know why I'm telling you this.
I did one! Pulse made a video on it a year ago, but basically right after the AGDQ run I immediately jumped into one. It took me 177 hours of gameplay, but also included all paths of solitude, bag slots, requests, outfits, recipes, and 50 wins in the eternal battle reverie.
@@halqery did you get any shiny Pokémon (besides the ponyta)
@@Jawbreaker8k The shiny charm was the very last thing I ever collected in the run (because eventually I had no reason to enter the Galaxy Hall) however, despite that, I still ended up with 36 SHINIES! I ended up giving them away to my viewers as a way to let them have “a piece” of the journey to keep. The coolest ones I got were an alpha Spiritomb and an alpha Zoroark.
@@halqery very nice. I’m still looking for shiny spiritomb in legends arceus. I got a few shiny alpha pokemon, but only 1 was not from an outbreak…and it was the first one, glalie :/
I think we can all agree this is the best pokemon game on the switch, trying something in the franchise giving fans a breath of fresh air as before this the games were starting to feel quite stale and repetitive.
It’s also the Let’s Go of Pokémon Snap. Where instead of blending Pokémon Go mechanics into Core gameplay, they blended New Pokémon Snap.
Your Dex requires multiple passes on the same Pokémon and observing different behaviors from them. You have a home base you return to, between semi-open areas where you can point and click with gravity mechanics to interact with the overworld, with each area in the game is overseen by a large glowing Pokémon.
I wish they were stale, biggest problem is how much they change for the worse each time.
This is the pokemon HGSS of the switch generation, and we didn’t even know it.
@@GS_CCC they are definitely stale
@@kieran5476 they aren't in a sense of being the same, we don't even have routes anymore, scarlet and violet is just a hold foward simulator.
They I would rather have it with gameplay around gen 4/5 and never changing than having it get intentionally worse every gen.
I know the Oshawott at 18:22 is being used to censor the game behind it, but the way the text pops up in front of Oshawott's body makes it look like Oshawott is being censored.
Absolutely wild that we only talk about the next areas of the game with 3 minutes of video left. Also pleased by the amount of time we saw Wolfe Glick.
id like more pulse personal storys of speedrunning tbh
I'm so happy to hear that cause I've actually started doing more livestreams and plan to turn them into videos with a lot of personal story to them! 😁
-> says that you can't just become a prodigy at pokemon vgc
-> references wolfe, who literally won regionals, nationals, and placed 6th at worlds his first year competing 😂
There’s also Michelderbeste who got 2nd at his very first worlds
this was true back in the early 2010s when vgc was much less well known. nowadays it is VERY difficult to get to the highest level because a lot of players who got their start then are still around, and the playerbase is far, far bigger
@@alias_hallow except Michaelderbeste did so last year, and almost became 1st in his first year of vgc. However he was a high ranking smogon player already when he chose to try out vgc.
Well even if it was his first, he still trained and studied for it
What he ACTUALLY says: you can't become a prodigy WITHOUT PREPARATION, you need a game plan.
Yeah, watching that speedrunner hop on and off Wyrdeer while tossing all kinds of stuff around looks amazing haha
"How much Wolfey content do you want to put in?"
PulseEffects: "Yes"
:D
As a VGC player who enjoys making VGC content but not watching it, I love watching Speedrun content since I'd never try doing it myself.
Stumbling upon this vid and seeing the comparisons to VGC was super neat, and I love the video essay format explain how the strategy fits together in the run. Never seen anything like it!
Easy sub from me 5min in.
PLA speedruns have traumatised Pulse.
"Such a BEAUTIFUL speedrun."
*Shows a Beautifly*
Nice touch
"You can't fully predict what your opponent will go for"
(Footage shows Volo)
I think the real barrier for this speedrun is cutscenes, cutscenes, cutscenes...
Pretty sure cutscenes are all skippable in this! Dialogue though is another story. 😂
@PulseEffects Well you know what I mean. Just a lot of downtime and mashing A, can never have the patience for it
watching this while waiting for space time distortions
Did you get an STD yet?
Gamer move😎
I was expecting this vid to be a very technical but still entertaining video, but it completely blew away my expectations! It was a whole story and there was so much emotion and meaning behind it and i was not expecting that! Absolutely amazing video! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
seeing all these clips of wolfey something is telling me pulse might be a fan but it could just be me, skyriming on the mountain XD
I noticed how much Wierdeer just changes your movement. When i got the mount I was certain I just go speed but nope, he just can sometimes run up the slopes where you need Sneasler and it baffled me how amazing it is to just cheese your way up then there´s also the fact that you´re able to roll up slopes or just wiggle your way upwards too and I got to areas much earlier than intended. It´s so broken and maybe it´s good that this kinda broken movement just makes things faster even though it also hinders you in some capacity. I have yet to update my brilliant diamond game because I still want to catch a shiny shaymin but...I just am lazy to go back and it´s funny to open the game and is like: Wait how the hell did I get here and then remember what I actually did to get even there lol
Dude if someone said that “oh doubles is just one more pokemon how much more complex can it be” i… i dont think i could hold myself back from annihilating them like.. what?
Yeah as that one additional pokemon really adds to the complexity.
Good thing triple rotation battles are not made official
what a nice coincidence, i just beat PLA yesterday
Finally a legends Arceus speedrun video!!
the only game where I can appreciate a stantler
So you brought up VGC just so you could include your Wolfey fancam, huh?
Well, I know what I'm doing when I go for my second enamorous for my living dex. A failed speedrun is quicker than how I played. I burnt out so badly on my first playthrough finishing the dex 😭
I have a playlist on my channel that will get you past alabaster Icelands as part of my “All Lords” tutorial! Highly recommend as I specifically wrote it to be very beginner friendly and relatively less complex than the current route.
IS THAT A TATSUGIRI ON THE STEALTH SPRAY?!?!
Huh does look like it. But idk why when they're not really stealthy
I think it's just a generic worm/bug
fuck now I want to watch Halqery, great vid Pulse :)
To be honest, for me the game was awesome when I played it the first time, but now on my second playthrough, I am bored.
For me as someone, who is more a shiny hunter and likes to collect all kinds Pokemon, seeing the same Pokemon everywhere all the time and especially the beginning... It is boring. I don't wanne catch nor see another luxray... I want something new. But nope. There just aren't enough Pokemon for me in this game to catch or interact with.
I also dislike having to catch like 40 Pokemon all the time to make enough money, just to get a bigger bag, that is filled with many items I never need...
Don't get me wrong, I love the catching mechanic, the story is decent and I enjoy the side quests a lot! I also love riding and flying on the new Pokemon forms from the region!
I just dislike the lack of variety in Pokemon and the basically endless catching of the same Pokemon. ^^"
I remembered trying to speedrun Legends in an attempt to obtain multiple Arceus’
Got myself a living form dex in my main save that I could move it to and from each new Arceus’ save to speed things along in the long run
But I ended up figuring out that Speedrunning Shining Pearl to be much easier (even if I need to catch Palkia and unlock National dex every save to be able to catch Arceus)
I really don't understand why, but despite putting over 50 hours into this game on my first attempt, it's actually the ONLY pokemon game i have started, but never finished.
At some point after doing a ton of side activities and going through the story, i just sorta... stopped playing... and even today, i can't really explain why i find it so hard for me to try and play it again, despite actually having gotten a renewed passion for the series, going through every game in the series in a row over the span of just 3 months!
So it's not like i got tired of pokemon, far from it, but there's just something specific about Legends Arceus that makes it next to impossible for me to even try and do a full playthrough...
12:20 Best moment of the whole video.
That's why I was battling Magikarp with Magikarp: Double the "Seen Magikarp use Splash" per battle!
VGC, speedrunning and Danganronpa OST in one video combined
I love this
12:20 the cut out on the audio got me 😂😂😂
DA LINKING CORD! DA LINKING CORD!
BRING IT BACK!!!!
epic soundtrack you used in this video boy, ggwp. love your content
i dont know much about legends arceus speedrunning other than this video but it feels like to me there's weirdly a lot in common between speedrunning this game and doing a minecraft all advancements speedrun. open world, lots of sidequests to complete and keep track of over the course of a few hours... thats kinda where it ends but it's still neat
I often use the example of Minecraft Random Seed Glitchless to explain how “although a decent amount of it can be considered luck, extensive game knowledge is required to take that luck and adapt to it”. What I mean by this is just, if someone were to just randomly start playing, would they get WR without a significant amount of practice and studying? The answer to both this and Minecraft RSG is no.
the intro was a reach bro just get into it
Watch halqery runs, they are so good!
I see that shiny bidoof in the lineup near the end.
the REAL god of pokemon
i absolutely LOVE this game
DANGANRONPA BACKGROUND MUSIC
love the wolfe glick fancam
This video is amazing!
totally didn't know you could stun lock wild Pokemon with just a well timed ball. Here I was complaining about how imprecise the item stun mechanics are on aggressive mons and you could just do this all along? Really wish I'd have known this sooner because it would've made my runs so much more enjoyable
Obviously it’s not an advertised mechanic, but once you get the timing down, it really isn’t that bad! You should definitely try it if you decide to pick up the game again :D
I remember being disappointed that you judged the game so quickly. This might not be popular but I do think speed running games that force you to react rather than strictly follow your route with little to no deviations are more enjoyable for both runners and the audience.
This is one of the biggest reasons why the two people that dominated the game for the first two years, me and ShadyGamerX, both came from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon speedrunning prior to Arceus’s release, another game that requires a ton of reaction and adaptability!
Man I had such high hopes during the intro and it was all shattered the moment I heard “ar-see-us”
I guess the pronunciation is sorta common. Still not as conflicting as pronouncing hocotate, that's just plain wrong.
@@HOGSLICE-PNF-404it’s not common, it’s a very small minority who use it and do so for the reactions…it’s no different than the folks pronouncing it “ar-coos”
@@bostonrailfan2427how he said it is how the Japanese version says it
man, i quite like this game but dang i hate the LONG, unkisppable dialogue sequences.
"Webster's dictionary defines..."
I didn't know there was a legend arseus. I've heard about legend arceus, what's the difference between the two, they look like very similar games
Apparently Scarlet and Violet had a lot more skips discovered will you make a vid on those?
Did anyone else feel like Arceus could have been so much more until S/V came out? Then realized how great the experience was in comparison? Haha
Did you really just start the video with "Webster's Dictionary defines (blank) as..."? You absolute goober 😂
Otherwise great video man, I enjoyed it
… I liked to call them backshots…
Are you Dwight Jr from The Office?
Real I would love legends arceus gameplay behind my videos instead of subway surfers
14:18 wait is pokemon legends arceus a souls-like?
Edit: 16:26 yes. Yes it is.
Just saying, life is complicated.
I wish a link to the specific gdq legends arceus run hes talking about
This is a nice video to listen to while I am replaying arceus.
I got the game for Christmas last year and for my first play through, literally didn’t give it enough credit. I literally went through the game mostly just doing the storyline. Not caring about the side quests, catching all those damn wisps for spiritomb or catching all the Pokémon because I thought you HAD to trade for some of the evos like other games, meaning that getting arceus was supposedly behind a pay wall with Nintendo online, didn't even look that up. So after a week, I beated Volo SOMEHOW very underleveled and unprepared, and was done with the game. That whole time I was just playing through it to numb my pain. Without getting into it, I lost someone the day right before Christmas. (Yep, Christmas Eve) So I used the game to just numb myself fro grief. I started replaying it again about a month ago and DAMN. I did this game dirty. I'm glad to play this game again.
@Saltheslab I'm so sorry for your loss... 💔 I'm so happy you were able to find the magic in this game though! It's really one of those games where you're rewarded for taking your time to smell the flowers and exploring your surroundings with its deep lore and phenomenal landscape.
@@PulseEffects Yeah. Definitely. It's up there for me for favorite Pokémon games (along with Scarlet and Violet which a lot of people don't get how that is possible) It is a bit of a slog to get through, but it's a fun slog if that makes any sense.
I really love Legends Arceus. But there were many missed opportunities...
Oh? I'm curious what you think is missing.
Wurmple supremacy!
Arc- phone. Arc-eus.
I havent touched the game in years (since release), but isnt the highlighted area at 6:40 wrong? Shouldn't you be able to go past the snorlax down the Alakazam boss and such?
You’re correct! You can. And with a lot of patience you can even build a bridge of Pokémon in the water to get across the wood bridge and bypass the barrier. But both of these options suffer from the same problem in a speedrun, time commitment. Especially pre-wyrdeer, considering things like this is out of the question.
20:20 THE BIDOOF SHINY!!!✨✨✨
Wolfey is getting to much love
Im blanking. What's the track in the beginning? At first I thought Tunic, and I'm sure it's an indie game, but can't quite get it.
And the second one to. Anybody an idea?
Celeste, specifically the Old Ruins I believe.
Oh yeah! Thx a lot.
Pulse x Wolfe collab when?
ARCEUS is not pronounced RCS.
It is pronounced RKS.
This is not debatable, nor a matter of preference.
It was originally pronounced with the RCS, but it got changed due to sounding like a bad word in German. Many people still pronounce it the old way however
soulsborne fans prob do so well with the easy bosses
You should do a video summarizing Mochi Mayhem speedruns. I don't know if there's anything particularly interesting about them, but I'm interested in the concept for some reason. Just not enough to actually watch an 11 hour run.
Does it mean going through the whole game up to that point as part of the run?
@@BJGvideos
Yes.
Main stories, Academy Ace Tournament (I think that's mandatory), Teal Mask, Indigo Disk, Mochi Mayhem.
@@pkmntrainermark8881 Awesome. That'd be hilarious.
I ask because I saw a PLA run that counted fighting Volo as separate and used a different save file for it so I wasn't sure if that was part of it
@BJGvideos
I just know that I looked up Mochi Mayhem speedruns and the WR is just under 11 hours. I can't imagine it's only the Epilogue.
@@pkmntrainermark8881 Yeah totally
this is a great video but ur pronunciation of arceus is killing me
Now go run Low Percent where you need to acquire as few items as possible. Fewer items means getting fewer balls, so you're stuck grinding out as few Pokemon as possible to grind up those points.
Legends arceus was my first pokemon game
Ark-ee-us
lol firered is your top 3 favorite speedruns? why?
@Justin-oq3ng it's the run that means the most to me. I ran and worked on the speedrun route for years and even held world records in it! It's truly a one of a kind run Pokemon Speedrun.
pain no gain
Nice video, but learn how to properly say Arceus please XD
Loved the video, but did you seriously unironically open an essay with "Webster's dictionary defines..."?
Hello
Why do people hate arceus so much they call it arse-eeus. Seriously, i get it isnt an edgelord's dream of what the god pokemon looks like, but calling arse all the time is just childish
Is this a joke bc that's just how you pronounce it
That's how it's pronounced in Japanese. It was only changed in English because Brits got weird about it because I guess how dare something foreign be pronounced like one of their slang terms
One of the worst game in the pokemon series
15 views in 1 minute, just give it up
11:32 "Ever evolving strategies such as this"
That, was probably the best pun I've heard this year.
Arr-Key-Iss >Arr-See-Iss
Reason: Ark Phone, not ar$e phone.
You can't stop me from calling it Arse Phone. 😤
