As a Cuban-American, former musical theatre performer and vocal coach...I was fan-girling hard. I could NOT stop dancing, and the feeling of community was so beautiful. What did you guys think? Have you seen it?
Can you please react to the movie? This is the first video I’ve seen of yours but I’d love to see a reaction from a Latina cuz I haven’t really seen any
God. It's so nice to hear someone who gets what this is all about. I've seen white vocal coaches react to this and they were "I was bored when they were talking about buying coffees and what they do during the day" and that's the whole point. This is our regular every day life on the screen. Our culture, our hustle, no guns or violence or drugs to represent our people. That's why it's important and engaging because In The Heights about being who we are and celebrating it! Thank you. Subscribing now.
I feel you though, and I’m black. like, it’s such a breath of fresh air. most latinos/latinas I know are not like what’s the film/tv norm. way beyond that. this is the community I know, where you’re a family.
I know! I lost the respect for some creators because of this. Like, the bodega scene is super interesting because it shows so many characteristics aspects of our daily lives. When Benny was holding the Maizena box I laughed. The café con leche, the lottery tickets, the leche condensada...For once I saw things close to me, added to the story as routine and not a joke...
That's bonkers to imagine, that other people wouldn't find the song interesting. Like, the whole point is that the show is basically just a notably hectic snapshot of these people's lives.
Having grown up in Washington Heights in the 60's, early 70's l couldn't wait to see this movie. My daughter n l went today, l loved every minute of it.
I love the sheer nostalgia of this musical, and this opening number in particular. I'm not even Latino, but as someone born in the Bronx, so much of this culture was around me throughout my childhood that it feels like a part of me, and I feel like anyone who is in a similar situation to me probably couldn't help smiling throughout this whole performance.
1:33 I feel like the Unrelated Relative is similar to like in black communities where a elderly lady is like a mom to everyone in that neighborhood. Like my great grandma is like the mother to the neighborhood. Everyone that’s not family call her mama brown.
Here in Hawaii too. "Hanai" is the term used for the Unrelated Relative. I'm asian but I had a Hawaiian "Aunty" a Filipino "Aunty" and even a Mexican "Abuela".
right! like, back when I was about 10 or so, back when I was in I wanna say first grade or so, cause we did 3 moves, so the second move, we were in like a tight knit area of Southern CA, and like, I couldn’t get anywhere without somebody knowing my mama. I’m like, I gotta be careful.
This movie was so amazing. I also love how they released "The first 8 minutes" which really is such a great ad for the whole film while not giving away anything either about the plot....
I really enjoyed this reaction because it's nice to hear from a Latina that the portrayl is authentic. I'm african american and from Atanta but it's interesting to see the similarities between cultures. Anyone can be a cousin or an auntie in our culture too haha.
yup, I love it! especially friends. like, if you click so much, you have that common bond, and I still use a mix of terms, I may call you a brotha or sista, or I sometimes I’ll call you fam.
@@LizaQuin speaking of that culture, I think I found me a sista as we say here! I can tell you’re heavy into music, me too! me too! ok, where can I follow you and possibly be friends, cause I can easily talk music with you, plus hip you to some channels and singers, or, how we do it, our people who can sang, and I can turn you on to them.
I lived in Los Angeles for Seven Years, this reminds me of East Los Angeles, Mexican/Mexician Americans selling Fruit and or Churros in August, good times.
I was really far away from the culture I was born into and I grew up adjacent to a Latin community and I had an abuela who loved me and took me under her wing. I always wished I was born into that community but as an adoptee, my heart felt like I was visiting my childhood. I love this so much and the music I totally can not sit still listening. Ah my heart.
I enjoyed this movie soooo much!! I cried, danced, laughed! Whatever u can think of! I just want to go watch it again and again! Lol! 😆 I didn't know that any movie would top my Dirty Dancing, but dang!, of course! My latino peeps and our Lin Manuel Miranda topped it! 🇵🇷❤
I'm neither from new York or any form of immigrant, but I still love this musical. If I ever meet Lin in real life, I will drop to my knees and praise his very being.
ive been a fan of the musical for a couple years now and when i went to see it in theatres i got chills more times than i could count and teared up several times. its so cool to finally see one of my favorite musicals on the big screen with amazing voices and production! (i still get chills every time i watch the first 8 minutes)
I love this movie, I am so upset that people always say it flopped but it was released in the middle of the pandemic, nobody was going to theaters, so that is no indication of how fantastic this movie is! I'm not a Latina but I am from New York City and was in the bodegas every day and surrounded by Latino and Caribbean cultures so this movie feels like home to me, too. I had to learn a bunch of Spanish phrases just so I can sing along. But it's so so fun, musically, cinematic ally, and great storytelling. I'm legit heartbroken that so many people missed out on it because of the timing.
Fun fact: most of the ensemble (the backup dancers) are from the Broadway castings of the show. You can tell in the power of the dance number at the end how much dedication and love they have for this work of art, which makes it more engaging and hyped up to me.
Hi Allison! Yes, I noticed that. LOVED to see some recognizable faces in the ensemble. I actually had a colleague of mine be part of the original ensemble. What a great show, huh? Such talent. Also, thank you for watching! :)
Honestly I love how the shelves behind the register in the Bodega had a ton of cans of Bustello coffee. Iconic shit right there, super popular coffee with working class Latinos.
I’m Mexican-American, born and raised in California, never been to New York, I don’t know anyone from New York, didn’t grow up in a community like that but when I watched this first 8 minutes I felt emotional. Because there was people who looked like me in a musical speaking and singing in English and Spanish. First or second generation Latinos that are being represented in a positive light in a film that had nothing to do with gangs and drug cartels and jail, etc while yes that does exist that isn’t the only thing that encapsulates us. So you’re damn right I saw this film in theaters and loved every second of it.
I havent seen a musical since i was little kid. I just finished this movie and I have to say I enjoyed it alot, and its left me both eager to see more Musicals in Film like Steven Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY,but also more critical of how Steven Spielberg represents the Puerto Rican culture that is heavily prevalent in the material and was heavily Whitewashed in The 60s original. My favorite songs were the Opening,The Beauty Salon Song, and Vanessa you make me Sweat. My biggest question I'm left with is where the the black Musical version ? I'd love to see a MUSICAL that celebrates BLACK CULTURE with a heavy influence on the early 90s NEW JACK SWING style of music like Bel-Biv-Devoe,BOYZ 2 MEN,New Edition and Bobby Brown.
Noticed suddenly different style for a single phrase "You must take the A train"? It is a nod to classic Duke Ellington jazz piece (probably most know in his rendition together with Ella Fitzgerald)
I would have gone to see it. Would probably have gone several times. It didn't come anywhere near me. Distribution in New England limited to major cities. 😭
@@SallyWallach where in NE are u at ? And yeah distribution does suck. And there’s not a lot of high end theaters either. Always thought of moving back there and operating an indie theater that serves food and drinks.
