  • Hello! I'm an American on a quest to learn more about history, geography and the universe in general. In this video I take a first look at India's space agency, the ISRO. Why didn't I know about this before? They not only reached Mars orbit on their first try, and launch 104 satellites at one time, but they did it with the fraction of the budget of NASA. This makes them perhaps the most efficient space agency in the world. If you enjoyed this video, please like and subscribe!

      Just a quick comment on your video, about the ISRO mission to Mars. No mission to Mars would have a constant rocket burn, that's why it takes months or years to get to Mars even though it's only about a 10 day flight as the Crow flies.
      If crows could fly in space of course.

      The people who worked in the mission were underpaid as compared to Nasa and CERN so that largely cut the costs of the mission. And they also succeeded in their maiden attempt. Hence, their overall cost was very low.

It way more advance ,has more instrument and has more fuel plus their operators on earth are decentralized and paid much more higher salaries so that adds up the cost.

    What you say at the beginning about not hearing about other countries' space agencies as an American - NASA makes a bad habit of this. If you go to the museums at Cape Canaveral they never mention space achievements by other countries - contrast that with (say) the space museum in Leicester in the UK which tells the Soviet side of the space race as well. There's a reason why Canada insisted on writing its name in huge letters on the side of the arm on the space shuttle & station, as NASA used to basically never acknowledge in writing that it was made by Canada.

      @Luredreier 3 года назад +2

      Yeah, no kidding...

    • @EricIrl
      @EricIrl 3 года назад +4

      @@Luredreier There's a reason for this. NASA has been around for many years. It was founded in 1958 and has its roots in the NACA, which dates back to 1915. It has a vast history of achievement in a aerospace going back over 100 years. It's hard for them to to squeeze in everybody else's stuff along with their own - especially in a fairly small museum.
      Over its 60 plus year history, NASA has also been involved in literally hundreds of programmes - including manned spaceflight, unmanned spaceflight, aviation, human factors, engineering, environmental research etc etc.
      Britain has been involved in aerospace for a long time too - but nothing like the scale of the US. Therefore, it's space centre in Leicester is more international in outlook. If was just for British projects it wouldn't have an awful lot to show.

    • @EricIrl
      @EricIrl 3 года назад +4

      I should also like to point out a few more significant differences between how NASA operates, what it is for and how that differs with ISRO.
      NASA is a pure scientific and engineering research entity. It is not a commercial operation and does not carry payloads on behalf of commercial customers. That is left to the private, commercial, space industry.
      It is also non-military - so it does not launch spy or military communications satellites. The US Department of Defense (and now the new US Space Force) launches its own payloads into space. In fact, in most years, US military and private commercial launches way outnumber NASA launches.
      NASA did toy with the idea of being part funded by placing satellites into orbit for commercial customers in the early days of the Space Shuttle programme, but they backed away from that type of operation after the Challenger accident in 1986.
      ISRO is a much more all encompassing effort. ISRO will launch anything for anybody, if they get enough money to do so. I attended the Farnborough Air Show in 2018 and spoke to Surrey Satellites, a leading builder of satellites in the UK (and the world) and they use ISRO a lot, because they are cheap and reliable.
      ISRO is much more like the Russian programme than the fragmented American "programme" in that it is much more directly government controlled.
      Launches in the US are split between multiple entities, some government (NASA and the Department of Defence) and many commercial and independent science entities.

    ISRO is something I knew very little about .. but I like their values as a Nation too ... They take simple steps to solve problems and help advance the Space Race ... plus they have that Cool StarTrek looking Icon too ... and if you follow their values they think a lot like the Star trek Federation` because they also only worked towards advancing Humankind as a whole. I think reaching Mars orbit at the first attempt was amazing and any project of that nature is worthy of calling themselves one of the best space programs for sure. I often keep up to date with what is going on in space ... and we live in exciting times at the moment with the mars rover doing it`s thing and SpaceX doing crazy stuff .. plus the moon getting visited again .. it is all happening out there.
    I always tune-in to Nasa T.V. whenever there is a spacewalk happening and a couple of years ago I had the chance to see the spacecraft that brought Tim Peake back to earth` when his craft came to The NRM in York ... forefilling a childhood dream of seeing a real spacecraft ... needless to say I took far too many photographs of it. So if I got this right` ISRO used the Slingshot Method to gain height to release stuff into a higher orbit ! ... now why did`nt NASA use that method to gain extra thrust when they were heading to mars ?. Space and all the problems humankind must first solve to visit or live on distant stars is one thing that I have always loved learning about, plus we must not forget about The Gateway Foundation too ... they have been rattling on about building a Giant wheel-like station that will Rotate to create Gravity on their station ? ... I love their plans and the idea`s they have` but it sounds a bit like a " go-fund-me " space program at the moment. I really enjoyed this video .. so please do more of them.
    I would be interested to know your views on Star Trek as a whole ? .. and what do you think of all the spin-off`s and all the other stuff that has followed it ? .. I love anything to do with space in movies or on T.V. Have you ever watched Doctor Who ? ... and if so` what did you make of it. Oh yes` another great topic to cover for all you Techno-Geek Types is Motorsport ... Yes` I know .. Boring .. I hear you all scream .. but the advancements in many motorsports :- i.e. Sportscar racing .. are often even more mindblowing than some of idea`s used by NASA and ISRO put together.

    India's ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) is a giant among space agencies of the world.
    Almost 35% Indian Scientists work in U.S.A.'s N-A-S-A (National. Aeronautics. and. Space. Administration.) that means NRIs or Non Resident Indians or more precisely Indians are running or Indians run N-A-S-A.
    India not only developed its own launch vehicles like PSLV, GSLV and ASLV but its own satellites also.
    ISRO has also developed NAVIC means its own GPS system, satellite destroyer missiles or weapons A-Sat which can destroy any satellite in the space, world's highest resolution camera satellite CARTOSAT.
    India is the fourth country to reach moon and has its own flag on moon in 2008.
    India is the first country to reach Mars in its first attempt in 2014. Its cost is less than Hollywood movie Gravity. India's second moon mission Chandrayan 2 was also a landmark in Indian Space Science history.
    India has many future projects like Mangalyan 2, Chandrayan 3, Aditya L1, own space station in space, Shukrayan means Venus mission, Gaganyan, sending humans in space and resusable space shuttle.
    India has record achievement of launching 104 satellites in just one rocket or launch vehicle to space.
    India has not only developed its own cryogenic engine for launching vehicle but its first supercomputer PARAM 10000 in 90's after denial of technology transaction or partnership project or collaboration of U.S.A. with India.
    India did everything alone and has capabilities do anything alone and its own.
    India launched 342+ satellites till date in which most of are foreign satellites
    India is the world leader of launching other countries' satellites on the lowest cost.

    Hi. Winding up using orbital passes to gain momentum is normal. They'd need a tanker full of fuel if they tried to get to Mars in one hop, and no chance for anything further. There was a mission recently where they spun off to Venus, looped back for a pass of earth, did a second Venus pass before having the speed to head off for Mercury. The mathematic 's are mind numbing, you have to calculate where all the planets are going to be, months or years in advance, to hit them at the right angle for a speedy throw on to the next target. Think it's called sling-shotting. The two voyager satellites bounced from one planet to the next over several decades to get to the outer planets. The recent Pluto fly by was similarly tortuous. It's amazingly fine calculations.
    The European space agency are completing their Galileo project at the moment. It's a similar system to GPS, but they'll control it. UK has contributed a lot to it, but won't get to use it due to Brexit.
    There is an attitude in UK that we shouldn't be sending aid to India, when it's spending on a space programme. I don't think the critics realise what a shoe string operation it is. Operating on a tight budget does sharpen the wits as to how to get things done cheaply and more effectively. For instance UK sent a probe to Mars called Beagle, it didn't survive the landing unfortunately, but it was a masterpiece of miniturisation.
    You'll have to make a space helmet for Roger now!

  • @ruchitagawande752

    Yes people questioned a developing country having a space program.. But it only made us save money in many sectors like sending our own satellites for farming, researches, television, weather predictions. So practically ISRO saves government money in other sectors coz we don't have to outsource those jobs to other space programs which obviously costs money and the cost goes up every year. Also it helps other developing countries and some private customers around the world which cannot afford sending their satellites with nasa or SpaceX etc. In return ISRO gets business in terms of money. As the launch of 104 satellites was not to set record but just to make the flight cheaper for every customer like carpooling 😜😜 and earn some profits alongside.
    India launched it's 1st satellite Aryabhatta by Russian rocket from Russia, the cost is of course bearded by government.Another example, in near future, the internet services will be provided via satellite, so if India plans to have the technology it does not have to outsource it.
    And as u mentioned that the space program is not for competing other nations but u missed the second point that Mr V Sarabhai said that it is for our own development in technology and space science so that one day it benefit our country. At the same time we have to make utmost use of our limited resources and we cannot afford to fail as many times as any other space program may afford to.

    I'm pretty sure that you partner with us Europeans and ESA the most.
    Although you've been forced to work with Ruscosmos quite a lot since you stopped flying your space shuttles up till when the private companies where done certifying themselves as being ready.
    The Russians have a lot of experience with taking people to and from space cheaply and safely and the location of the launch matters when you're trying to rendezvous with the ISS.
    Same with carrying capacity and track record of manned flights, and like I said, the price...
    Europes ESA and the Japanese JAXA/NASDA have a *lot* of cool missions to other planets and moons though and we've done a lot with the US and NASA.

    • @EricIrl

      True. ISRO's PSLV-C37 launch put 104 satellites in total into orbit in 2017. Only this year (January 2021), SpaceX placed 143 satellites into orbit in one launch so they currently hold the record. Bear in mind that the bulk of these large volume payload type satellites are actually "nanosats" - which means they are extremely small and are often part of student projects. Minituarisation and the use of off the shelf components, means that very small satellites (shoe box size or even smaller) can be made quite cheaply and lots of them can be packed on top of a medium capacity rocket.

    I wouldn't be too harsh about not keeping up with developments in space. "Space is big...." as Douglas Adams entertainingly put it in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Taking up the subject can be daunting since if you're into space you're into everything. See the small blue dot by Carl Sagan... ISRO has demonstrated a good working model of a civil space agency. A careful matching of capability progress with useful civil outcomes. The largest return from space has been, still is and will be communications and information. Others have capably outlined these here. A small scale verification that ISRO has taken a sound path is the success of Rocketlab following a similarly disciplined approach. Of course this is a small company rather than a national agency, who's leadership did not promise to eat their hats if the scope extended... Meanwhile, at a small company, a small hat eating ceremony ensues...

  • @imdiyu
    @imdiyu 2 года назад

    You rightly said about NASA's budget is not too much either. I am from India. The budget ISRO gets is also a very tiny tiny portion of total budget. If you can solve all of India's problems by utilising the money on ground, instead of in space, then by all means take it, take all of it, shut down ISRO. But if you couldn't solve the problems with 99% of the money, what more can you do with the remaining 1%. I am pretty sure it is even less than that. Space exploration itself is such a majestic endeavour that it may feel like waste of money to the untrained eye. Where as the money ISRO gets is really like breadcrumbs, and those breadcrumbs are laying down our path to the future.
    Let that sink in.
