I've been doing the syphon method for a couple of years. I actually get into the pool first, and run around in circles; the debris will settle into the centre of the pool, then I just syphon the debris out. Easy peasy, no cleaning filters every two minutes!
Man I’ve been struggling for the last two months trying to find a vacuum that picks up dust dirt that cannot be picked up. And my filtration system is too weak to suck up the stuff on the bottom of the pool and was about to spend thousands of dollars on a better pump going to buy the stuff to siphon out my pool
@@BigSloe3075 I scrub down the walls and bottom of the pool first, then run in circles and get out. In about an hour, you'll see the debris mostly on the bottom of the pool, in the centre. Git in and start your syphon! I syphon my pool water out onto my lawn, away from my house.
Also, if you want to extend the life of your filters. go to the dollar store and get knee-high hosiery (not socks). Pull one over your filter cartridge and put the cartridge where it belongs. Remember to check the cartridge daily (or more often, depending on what's in the pool besides people, lol). When you pull out the cartridge, you will find all kinds of crap caught on the outside of the hosiery. Pull that off, rinse till the water is clear, do the same with the actual filter. I have filters which are three or more years old. I clean and replace my hosiery-covered cartridges daily, and that's meant I have spent MUCH less on those expensive cartridges.
This is a money saver! Thank you so much for this video I would have never thought to do it this way. I know this is an old post but if you see this comment, I hope you have a fun and safe summer! Thank you again!
OMG. I feel your pain in getting the hose to suction. If you take a quart mason jar, dip it in the pool to fill it with water, then put the end of the hose down into it. You can hold the hose in the water filled jar and sit it on the ground, it will pull the water. It works! thanks for the tips.
I watched about 100 videos and they just didn't make sense at all... so much work, till I saw yours. Thank you so much for sharing you've made my life so much easier. Thanks again
Oh my gosh!!! Thank you so much!!! I was faffing around trying to get the filter to vacuum to waste. No suction at all. Gave up and found your video. 3rd try and I got it to siphon! I was so excited! Thanks again so much. I hardly lost any water at all either.
Thank you!! I was struggling how to vacuum this crap out of the bottom of the pool after using froculant to sink the algae to the bottom. Worked so well!!!
I use this method. The only thing I do different is stretch the hose furthest away from pool. Use my shop vac to start suction and drain away from pool area. If you drain near the pool, eventually the ground will sink periodically causing unlevel pool. Great video !!!
Thank you Ken for posting this video! I usually don’t comment on videos, but I had to on this one! I used this method to clean out my above ground pool today after I had put floc in it yesterday and it worked! If only I had seen this video from months ago, I could have been enjoying my pool and saving some money as well. I couldn’t get the siphoning to start at first so I shortened the hose. Once it started, I added the additional hoses that were previously removed. Thanks again Ken! This video DEFINITELY helped me out!
Works like a charm! I don't have a pool vacuum hose so I use the hose from my carpet cleaner. Yes carpet cleaner. One end has a brush. I hang the other end over the pool and vacuum with the brush end. Thanks a million
Finally! A simple demonstration where I wasn't confused 30 seconds in. A little editing would've been better but it was very effective & I'm retired. Thank you!
I almost didn't watch the entire video because of the shakiness of the camera..... but this method is genius! Thank you for taking the time to show us pool owners how to make do with electricity!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been struggling with algae dust for a year. Thank you so much for this video. We already had the hose and vaccum, we just weren't using it properly. My Our pool is algae free for the first time since last summer.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! for this video. After about an hour and a half of struggling with the new vacuum, that the vendor said was universal and would fit my pool pump, and getting absolutely no where but in a highly agitated state, I came inside and came across your video. I immediately went back outside and set my vacuum up in the way you had it and got the siphon to work on the 1st try!!! OMG, easy peasy is all I can say!!! Again, thank you!!!!
All I can say is thank you very much. You showed use everything you didn’t even have to speak and I got it... now I know how to clean and drain the pool.
We have a de filter and at the season open we have to brush, vacuum and filter. Each time costs money and time. Siphoning is free, fast, and efficient. This is great for all pools! Saves a bundle. Great post!

Yes!!!!! Thank you Ken! Came back from vacation and pool had algae all over the bottom. Attempted this several times, no luck. Thought about emptying pool and refilling! But after watching this, I got it and did the whole pool fairly quickly (18’ pool). The hose got heavy but otherwise this worked like a charm. Didn’t lose that much water either. I did put hose on jet and filled it up, as soon as I threw the hose out the siphoning started! Thank you!
Good stuff, I have an Intex 32x16 and with all of the storms followed by intense sunlight my pool has been staying green and every time I try to vacuum it the filter just gives up on life a few minutes in, I didn't even think about using the siphon method, thank you.
If you live in a city that kills you on the water bill ask your water company for a meter. It connects through the hose & you won't get the double charge for sewer on water that you use to fill or top off your pool. I live in New Jersey & I get a bill around $300 to fill my pool after the winter or if I refill it after I backwash it siphon out alot of water. Thank you Ken for this. I wish I saw this before I ran my filter for 12 hours)& constantly backwashing it. It would if been alot cheaper if I vacuumed out all the heavy green algae on the bottom of the pool. Thank you
Thanks for taking the time to show us. We had a sand filter that came with the pool, and at some point, one or more of the internal laterals cracked, putting sand into the pool. We bought a new hayward pump, (not sand) and now of course we are trying everything to vacuum up the sand that you cant seem to get it all. We also have a pool blaster FX8, and even that doesnt get all the sand, let alone the motor went out just the other day! So this gives us hope before purchasing another vacuum!
I wanted to let you know your video really helped me. Our pool had algae on the bottom and I used your method to make it sparkle. It was difficult for the vacuum to start by putting the hose over the side. So I put all the vacuum hose in the water then suck on the hose to get the siphon started.
I want to add that for my 16 ft pool, I ended up not even using the pool vacuum at first... my pump wasn't strong enough to work the regular vacuum when the pool was at 4 inches, but.. but with my garden hose, I could run water first into the pool and then disconnect the end out of the pool and siphon off the water that way... effectively making my garden hose a small vacuum... it took time, but I WAS able to vacuum most of the dark green algae out of my pool that way, so that when I filled the pool the water was clean.. it was slow and a work out, but it did work. Also, in doing this, I first skimmed EVERYTHING the skimmer net would catch... EVERYTHING, even small seeds... all that was left to vacuum was dirt and algae... and I knew if I left this, that it would grow when I filled the pool... I also drain my pool with the same method, in the fall, when I want to drain it down lower than the inlets. Next to where my pool end comes is my drain that leads to the street underground, so I have no trouble with soggy land, no mud and no soggy grass....
You have helped me so much I've tried this method so many times and finally today before i hired someone to come clean it finally it worked for me after seeing this video
throw a water filled loop of hose over the side of the pool while leaving the open ended wa in the pool. then drop the end over the side. much easier and works every time
Thanks for sharing! My husband and I really would like to get a pool but I want to learn as much as I can before we take the plunge. I found your channel from your review on Amazon.
thank you sooo much , you just saved me a lot of mony , i was thinking about buying me one of those robot cleaners that cost a lot of cash..thanks buddy...
You just saved me so much time!!! I've been having to clear filter ever 10 min too!! This is like the 20th video I have watched and now I am done searching RUclips I can not thank you enough!
Thank you so very much! I was having a hell of a time cleaning our above ground Coleman pool. I was also ready to buy a $1300.00 robot and this method was $96 and worked. The vaccum the pool came with is garbage. Thank you again!!
That's exactly how I do my pool. I have french drains on my house and have an access port on one of my drains to put my siphon hose in. I only have a 16ft pool. If you do it quick...you don't loose all that much water. It's way better than hooking up to a pump. They clog in just a few minutes.
This works, but be aware you lose a ton of water with this method. You can get an attachment called a skimmer plate that you attach to the end of your hose and then put into your skimmer. This provides the suction you need and your filter will grab the dirt without losing any water.
Thank you so much for this awesome video that explains it so well! I am trying to do the same, not successful yet in filling the whole hose… Any tips? I push the hose into the water, yet it floats 😅
this looks great however what i did for my intex metal frame pool was go to home depot and buy this gadget by HDX pool vacuum, it cost roughly 24.00 with a large mesh bag, and hook to the water hose, that way your not losing water and it was amazing, happy girl here now being you cant really use a regular above ground pool vacuum with the intex..
I made a video showing my leaf master. I think it does the same thing. The problem I have with it is that the fine stuff goes right through the mesh bag.
I think I got something similar, trying to clean algae from the bottom of the pool but it went right through the mesh bag. I will definitely be trying the siphoning method this weekend!
Hooks to water hose but don't you have to run your water to create the suction? And then you're still wasting water? I was thinking about connecting the faucet end of the hose to the drain on the pool and see if that creates the suction then that way you're just circulating the same water instead of adding or removing water
I did mine with a regular garden hose with a shop vac car detailing wide mouth head attached with a piece of plastic attachment swivel hard to describe cant find words today busier than a one armed paper hanger! Busier than a one legged woman in an ass kickin contest !
How to qualify for a second mortgage to pay the water bill..... Just buy a cheap pump, make a 5 gallon sand filter bucket and recycle the water back into the pool.... saves on chemical costs too.
Yes I have never seen it done this way I was trying to use my filter and running the hose over top of my pool but it would lose suction because it's above water so this might work
I've been trying to days I got a 30ft hose and the vacum head and tried to fill the hose and pull it out of the pool and nothing comes out I need tips to fill the hose and make it actually work😢

So here's the deal, 8 used this method all last summer and it worked amazing except for one issue. I don't have a heater for my pool so every time I vaccuumed the pool I would lose maybe 3 inches of water which I needed to replace.of course that water I used was from the hose and it was cold. 8 need a way to vaccuum the pool and not make the water colder. Still trying to figure out what I need to get to do this but it looks great. I'm hoping it gets rid of the tiny dust particles too cos they drive me nuts. Just a suggestion but if you syphon from the pool to a holding tank with a fine mesh cover to collect all the debris, could you then double syphon from that back into the pool to save your water? Like I say I'm still figuring stuff out but thanks for the video.
You would have to pump the collected water back into the pool. When you siphon, water goes from high to low. To get it to go from low to high, you have to lift/pump it.
My stubborn ass hubby can't clean the pool by himself and he likes to yell when I do something wrong.. smh.. I told him to watch the youtubes and all videos show it's one man job...
Ok so how about this if I take the hose that sucks the water out of the pool leave one end connected to the pump and put the other end over the side of the pool so that I can manually direct it where I want it to suck. And disconnect the hose that pumps the water back into the pool at the the pool end so I can direct in what way I want that water to go. So the water isn't pumping back into the pool it's drainingxinto the grass or rocks. Won't that work? I'll let you all know
Put your pump on waste stick the mouth of the hose to the jet that sucks then it will siphoning. Then stick the hose outside of your pool on the ground.. Make sure the other end of the hose stay in the pool at all time so it don't suck up air and you lose your siphoning.
I've been doing the syphon method for a couple of years. I actually get into the pool first, and run around in circles; the debris will settle into the centre of the pool, then I just syphon the debris out. Easy peasy, no cleaning filters every two minutes!

Put your pump on waste stick the mouth of the hose to the jet that sucks then it will siphoning. Then stick the hose outside of your pool on the ground.. Make sure the other end of the hose stay in the pool at all time so it don't suck up air and you lose your siphoning.
Thank you!
Use the pump pressure to create the vacuum in the hose
