- We're in Adam's cave to check out one of his obsessions, a robot spider with incredibly realistic movement. Adam shows off the special box and platform he built to tinker and calibrate the spider, and then sends it crawling around the pool table in his shop. It's not for the arachnophobic!

Fascinating, I find that the 'prototype' that Adam has, appears to move far more organically than the later edition.
That could be made into an RV and go to any terrain on earth.

Yeah you're right, South America *does* have more dangerous spiders and I'm glad we don't have them. We've got our share of dangerous creatures as it is. Like the Taipan and King Brown snakes. Salt water crocs. Kangaroos carrying .45 caliber submachine guns. Oh and Drop Bears of course.

I’m an arachnologist and I currently own a couple hundred tarantulas and have been breeding and caring for them for more than 20 years. I can’t get over how realistic this thing’s movement is! The designers of this have made a true masterpiece! 😳🕷

They should make it where the two legs in the front extend upwards like it's threatened.

Imagine a couple dozen of these with solar panels, more robust construction, and various sensor clusters, deployed on other planets by NASA replacing wheeled rovers.
What is the advantage? Coolness?
Valken Advantage is that it's capable of rougher terrain than wheeled vehicle would be. It's also small and 3D printable, meaning mass producible and you can fit many on a space vehicle. So it can cover much more ground per unit time than a single rover would.
Geo What about power?
Valken As with any rover on another planet solar is the only viable long term power source. There are radioisotope thermoelectric generators, but I don't think that's practical for something of this size.
Wrong. Rovers are usually nuclear powered: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curiosity_(rover)#Specifications
125 watts for 899 kg.
Assuming 900g for the spider(heavier is optimistic), it consumes 4.8v*2A=9.6 watts. Multiplied by 1000 = 9600 watts? Or close to that. It cannot be powered by currently used sources of power for rovers.

I mean it's not bad for robotics micro servos. Some are cheaper, but many are a fair bit more. "Cheap" is relative.
It makes me sad how expensive servos are. Any good hobby robotics project is going to set you back at least $100 in servos alone. If someone could make a $5 servo it'd be a total gamechanger.

Wow, just stumbled upon this video again after 9 years! I remember seeing this when it was first uploaded and being completely blown away. 9 year old me wanted one of these soooo bad!
They should put a latex skin over that molded and painted to look like a real spider. Maybe add hairs to make it look like a giant tarantula.

This is AMAZING! They made it sound like it was ridiculously expensive but at $650 it isn't at all! Anyone who's into real RC products $650 is nothing in the real world... hell my basic electric 3d heli was 2k... Ordering right now!
in the top right corner of the opening shot you can see the head from "the thing" with the spider legs coming out of it that's amazing!! by far one of my favorite movies of all time.
It's now 2018 and the first time I'm seeing this and in 2018 it's still incredible. Very life like, which is rare in robotics.

mod the front led light to house a fpv camera. that would be the best rc spider ever.
It also might be light enough to put something sticky/adhesive on its legs to make it walk on walls/ceilings. Not sure though.

fpv cameras are very small and light.
but yeah those servos sound very sensitive. you could make the spider's shell out of CF to keep the weight down. might not help much, but its would be cool if its possible.

Here's an idea. Mount a camera in it and use the Oculus Rift to look through the camera; when you look around with the Rift, the spider looks around. Just a thought.

I have a Phidippus Regius, and it's amazing how realistically this robot moves, it looks exactly like the real deal, even the "snappy" movement of the head when it looks at you is so realistically done. I am really impressed

No fangs ,no spinnerets, doesn't walk up walls,not even an aggressive behavior mode ...but really cool for a prototype! I can see the micro spider versions with a lot more features and a more life like motion movement being innovated in the near future . Cool!
I have an idea. Make a robot spider... that does 3D Printing.
It can build webs, structures, print back holes to walls... a whole lot of things.
It just makes perfect sense.
That would take years of research and a lot of money's
That, or possibly mice? Gophers? Birds? I love your idea though. If they could figure out how to manufacture spider webs artificially, they could use a micro "spinner" robot to fill a small crack or hole in a structure. Maybe use moon rover spider bots to make buildings and fill in caves or something? Lol. So cool to think about.
Using "spider leg" rovers on Mars or the Moon instead of wheels could work well if appropriately designed.
I hope they will implement jumping functionality >:-) But that needs metal gear servos.

I have/had several kinds of tarantulas and I can attest the realism of the movements of the Robot Spider. Great work, but they shoud add some fangs, to make it even more realistic.
Oh cool, you've kept tarantulas? Can you recommend a good species of tarantula for a beginner? I'm thinking about getting one, but my experience so far is limited to birds and rodents :/
Stitched Skull Studios Yes, I can recommend a "Brachypelma smithi" (Mexican redknee tarantula). They are pretty good for beninners. Beautiful and very calm!

Joel C That stuff is already out. You need a camera with very little latency, a VTX (video transmitter) with a cloverleaf antenna and goggles with a screen. I have this stuff on my quads
We already have small enough drones and now they are developing wasp-size robots for industrial and comercial spying .
We are getting closer to our downfall.

This robot should have a function to lift its forelegs up in a threat display, either first pair only, or two first pairs depending on what spider it's mimicking.
I'm normally ferrified of spiders but this electronic specimen is fascinating!
