I wish they'd go high enough to not just work as a standing desk, but as a walking desk on the manual treadmill I bought off the classifieds. It's around 20 cm off the ground, so I need a desk around 137 cm to be perfect. I need to add a riser to the desktop probably. Main problem though is the treadmill is LIGHT. The revolving track itself feels like it's 10 kg of inertia, so walking just feels like I'm super overpowered, balancing is very awkward, steps are shaky. I need to find metal bars to add weight to the 43 planks of the treadmill, on the inside there is ~25x5 cm for it, and around 2cm thick would fit. That's about 2 kg per metal bar I need, and 43 of them adds 86 kg to the treadmill which would be both perfect and terrifying :) Where to get such metal for cheap, though? I see 200-400 Euros which is nuts. I just need a metal roadworks plate cut to 50cm strips, pretty much :)

Yea this is a fun video, and it's well made, I'm sure with darpa funding it could be a lot better, but really, it just illustrates that the at at concept is just pure garbage. If slow, and maneuverable, the only possible pros would be that it could carry a lot of weight over rough terrain but then you start to think of all the terrain types and it's like snow? ok no, it would sink in if it was heavy, so worse than tracked vehicles, same with sand. Jungle? Like stepping over downed trees? i guess but the lack of maneuverability and it's tall size would make it way too easily ambushed. There is just nowhere this think would actually be good, even with military funding.

@@davidgreenwood6029 yep. And in a world where elmost everything flies and a kid can make a flying car etc just by bolting some junk together...
The best transport is always to fly.
Why build the incredibly expensive walking machine with a limited payload size, that moves slowly and still cant get over a mountain or deep lake. You just bolt some flying engines onto your payload area and fly there.
The At-At might have been viable as a special purpose TIE fighter carrier. It could be armoured enough to protect the fighters from extreme weather or light attacks. Like a mobile armoured airport.

Very impressive! amazing that the 3d printed gears and parts are holding up. Can you take larger steps instead of speeding up the motors to walk faster? A video on how you got it moved and set up for the final walking sequence would be cool. Must have been a ton of work to get it out there.
Thank you for sharing with us.

I think speeding it up would help also if you could increase the stride a bit more.

  • @trooper5157

Awesome. The intelligence this project took is probably the most impressive part. Really hoping to see length of travel on the feet increased and an overall speeding up of the coordination and motors. Increasing length of travel between steps is a sure fire way to increase how realistic, and quickly, it moves. Great video!

  • @mundanestuff

can't you increase the speed by increasing the stride length? Looks like there's several inches available for the legs to stride forward longer, effectively doubling the speed by doubling the stride length?

Great projectbut I need to notice, your "walking sequence" is just totally unfinished and inefficient. All legs should work together, not only one in time. It could go much faster and smoother. It's just programming, no additional costs. I build spider on small rc servos few years ago, and something like your project but in "scrap mechanic" game 😂. Anyway, the better the sequence, the better the robot works. I hope you will do it to let us see it.

In terms of "knee" direction and animal movement, it's important to remember that many animals that move on all fours have very elongated back feet, and what often appears to be a backwards knee is actually an ankle, with a regular knee further up. The AT-AT design makes that kind of impossible to mimic, so maybe... elephants? Is the elephant walk cycle something that AT-ATs could mimic?

Sadly this will never make to military use, the enemy can just use an airspeeder with a grapple to trip it up.
This would be cool to see in a desert with a bunch more other vehicles and devices made, you could film a mini battle using your models and robots.
Would be one wicked event to have others come out for, have people make warhammer vehicles and r.c. versions of some things and you can have a battle and a half, just plan out who gets to win or maybe use some kind of system on the side to randomize some things.
What's really cool about this, a fan of the series was able to 3d print and build this, screw the 50million needed for the actors.
If you could contact some of the youtubers doing stop motion with legos, you could do a nifty video.
Its too bad you never got ahold of the toys they made, I had an at-at that was battery powered, had sound effects and you had a little joystick inside the body to manipulate the head....
Check out place named toy traders, they have a whole lot of those toys on display on the walls.

    Improvements: Silly String Cannon
You've done us nerds proud by making a proper head, but now replace it with an aimable silly string cannon platform.
Have it look as "head-like" as possible, yes, but make it so you can see over it, so you can aim better.
Are custom silly string blasters possible? Mount the tank of fluid(?) behind you to make it easier to refuel. Will also give the appearance of more bulk.
Have pipes and flexible tubes running up to the head, so it can fire in second-long bursts, simulating Star Wars blaster effects.
Have a water system to flush the tubes once the shield generator is down, so it doesn't get clogged.
For extra credit, have it glow and charge it with UV light moments before it reaches the nozzle.
Slightly thicker nozzle than standard silly string cans, but not so much that moms and DPW workers are cursing you trying to get it out of hair and bushes.
Only use water soluble, biodegradable, and non-toxic silly string, please.
Simplifying it by just using standard cans of silly string could also work if you want to be basic about it ~ grinsmirks
Also have the legs kind of fan out in an X when you do this to give you a more solid base
