    I got fitted for i500 and have started to play them . I found I can control the distance very well with this club. It’s nice to know you can make a shot and have the confidence in your irons that it’s gonna get there. Ping i500 is the best out of all these clubs. I love them and I have tried all of them. Good video James!

    I traded up my Ping G's for the i500's for one simple reason; accuracy. An added bonus was shot shaping abilities, the i500 allowed me to create shots better. The downside was distance, the G's went further, at least a club further but the dispersion was greater. At least this was my impression between those two clubs. Later this summer I will be fitted for Mizunos and look forward to that comparison. Love the videos!

      im picking up a set of original p790s monday and have researched all the videos and google reviews i could while i awaited grips to be installed. the short irons dont have the speed foam. which would feel or perform more consistent in terms of distance. 🤙🏼. you would have had them 3 years now. glad to see so many love the p790s. all three models 2017 2019 2022

    Thanks to videos like this, I got fitted today for the Mizuno 919 Forged irons (Plano TX) at Watters Creek GC. Over an hour of tinkering around with shafts and heads. I’d say the final 10 shots were amazing. Can’t wait to get them in play.

    Got the i500's shortly after they were introduced. Went to a highly recommended club fitter and hit all the usual suspects. After hitting various clubs and shafts, the i500's were the obvious best choice for me. (I wasn't worried about distance, more so accuracy and feel). Got in about 2 months worth of play before the weather turned (I live in Ohio), and am extremely pleased with the purchase. I opted for the traditional lofts and not the retro or power lofts. Long and very forgiving.

    AP3s are the weapons of choice for me. I was between the CB and the AP3 and settled for last. I love the look and they play fantastic - with NS Pro Modus3. I hit some incredible shots out of rough or fairway and sometimes can‘t believe how great the flight and result is. I will be sticking with those for a long time. Titleist baby 😁

    I've been playing Ping for over 10 years - i10's and i5's. But, last weekend I tested both the AP3 and i500. After an hour of hitting stiff and regular shafts in both, I bought the AP3's. Distance was basically similar - both at least a club better than my i10's. In the end, the AP3 just suited my swing better and gave me the ball flight I was looking for - a little lower. I now just want to get on course and play. Thanks James - great reviews and excellent advice.

    Up until last year I used the Nike pro combo Irons from 2011,with the solid blades up to 8 iron ,as great as these clubs were I struggled on bad golf days . AP3 are what I have now with the Vokey wedges and I can honestly say these are great and I don't miss the Nike forged set at all now ,another plus point is the wedges stay looking better too .My game with long irons with the AP3 has come on so much better ,with plenty of practice I now hit a decent 4 iron with confidence .Think I would be happy with any of these clubs .Great honest review James .

    Thanks to Titleist AP3 I have fallen in love with the game of golf again!
    I’m in my mid 40’s and I don’t see myself as a better player. I broke 90 last year but will probably not break 80.
    My swing speed is moderate and I hit the 7 iron around 130m/140y. I chose True Temper AMT Red Regular shaft because I like it’s lightness and high ball flight. Used to play TaylorMade’s game improvement irons like RSi 1 and Burner 2.0 but I learned to hate the strong lofts, heavy weights and clumpiness of a game improvement iron. With AP3 I can even launch the 4 iron from the turf without any difficulties. With TaylorMade I couldn’t even get decent shots with my 5 iron...

    Thank you so much for doing this review! I hoped you would do something like this but never expected you to cover all 4 of the clubs that most interest me.
    As an AP3 owner (who loves them) this test just reassured me that I’m not giving anything up from a performance standpoint by sticking with them for now!
    I know they aren’t the sweetest feeling of the bunch, nor the longest. But it’s close enough that I don’t feel compelled to make a switch right now.
    Also, it looked like the AP3s WERE amongst the best when it came to dispersion!

    Everyone is a little different. I tried 3 of the 4 of these clubs and went P790 as I found the feel to be outstanding and forgiveness is good, very workable and the distance issue I haven’t ever seen, I feel i can easily control distance - in fact I am “feeling” shots 5-7 yards short or long as needed very consistently. Thanks James!

    Hey James, love the videos! I have been using the Ping G400 Irons and Driver, and I love the feel and playability. I'm a 25 handicap , and these clubs have brought my handicap down to 15. All my shots go usually straight, and I found myself putting for birdies A LOT more.

  • @johnharris2353
    @johnharris2353 5 лет назад +2

    Went in for a fitting and the P790 was the club where it didn’t matter where you hit it on the face, the end result was closer to target and further then the JPX. I’m sure it’s different from person to person but that’s why I feel a fitting is necessary to make the final call.

    The problem with comparing 7 irons is that they all have different lofts. So the Taylormade is probably equivalent to the 6 iron on the Mizuno. Clubs should have lofts stamped on them not numbers. Enjoyed the video though. My MP25’s are safe for now though.

    • @JamesRobinsonGolf

    • @richardsdiaz1

      Terry Wright I’ve often thought the same thing. However, James’s test has me rethinking this. Did you notice his spin rates? They were all right around 5500. I’m not so sure the loft is so all-important when it come to this category.

    • @terrywright6571
      @terrywright6571 6 лет назад +2

      Lefty SoCal Golfer I take your point but a few years ago I changed a set of Taylormade burners for some Mizuno Mp64s and it was interesting to note that the length of shaft and loft were one club different. If not by those parameters how do you define a 7 iron ? And then how to you compare between brands?

    • @richardsdiaz1
      @richardsdiaz1 6 лет назад

      Terry Wright I really don’t know. It’s why I was so excited to see this comparison. I wanted to see how these clubs compared to each other.
      Adding clubs like these ended up being really expensive for me...
      I’ve spent a lot of time working on my gappings since I bought the AP3s. I found that i had to effectively change every club in my bag except driver, 3 wood and putter to make it work. The only club I didn’t change was my 54 SW but even that I’ve bent 1 degree strong.
      For these reasons and more I’d be concerned about getting any set that is even longer than my AP3s are. From this point forward I’ll be more interested in feel and dispersion from this category.

    I play the i500 in Modus 105x retro loft. They are perfect. They go so high. Spin numbers are spot on and the forgiveness is second to none. I love that it looks like a blade but I know it offers help on miss hits. I played ap2’s all my life and i thought it would be a hard switch for me. It wasn’t. The i500 is just simply top notch.

  • @clakerdrs
    @clakerdrs 6 лет назад +2

    I hit all these irons with a fitter 3 separate times. I wanted the Pings or JPX but the 790’s were the most consistent each time for distance and lateral misses. If you check your results the 790’s had the smallest lateral deviation and smallest length dispersion. Yes they go farther but are more consistent. I ordered the 790’s but I’ll have to recalibrate my distances. The added forgiveness over my current gamers will be welcome now that I cant get out to practice as much.

      Just ordered the 790s today. Gotta just adjust to the additional 25-30 yards i just gained on my old x-18s. Tried like 5 or 6 different irons and the feel and distance i got with these was unmatched. Callaway apex was the only club that came even close.

    Great video. For me consistency is key then feel. The Mizuno was the most consistent it seemed. What good is distance if you can’t confidently hit the number you need. The 790 is a full club strong at 30.5 loft for a 7 iron. So you should compare that to your current 6 iron to be fair. The problem with all these hollow irons is the inability to hit your number. I hit my 7 Wilson V6 Forged (35 degrees) 165-170. That being said my numbers on the 790 were 180-210. I cannot sensibly put a club in my bag with a 30 yard dispersion difference same with the i500

    • @richardsdiaz1

      Wilson V6 irons are awesome but not a players distance iron, just players iron category. 7 iron loft is 35 degrees or close to it.

    Pick the iron that feel more comfortable in your hand. It's more about the swing than the club. I'm still sore that Hogan's are no longer made. I've had my RedLines for well over twenty years and they still feel great. I've tried many other clubs but always come back to my Hogan's.

    I personally hate seeing multi-piece irons labelled as forged. As far as I'm concerned, unless it's a one-piece forging, like the Mizuno, it isn't "Forged" Forged face welded to a cast body, or vice versa? No thanks.

    Being a lefty, I find it hard to replace my Nike VR Pro Blades. Overall, I would go with the best feel irons like the Mizuno. I’ve own the MP 68 before and from what I’ve researched, mizuno irons feel really soft. But looking at the Taylormade P790, those yardage might get me to switch, but being a lefty...I find it hard to get properly fitted. Not too many left handed clubs around my local area. Great video, would like to see your ball flight, just to get a good idea of the dispersion rate.

    FWIW, I have been playing the i500s since they came out. My game has improved --61 YO 5.5 Index. Hit the 7 iron 160-170, depending on the day/conditions, lie, me, etc. Feel is fine. Very rare that I can't dial it in, although I do find that the wedge doesn't fly as far (proportionately) as the others, so I have a gap. Looking at some newbies, but honestly think I've found as much distance as I need.

    Definitely going to try the i500's when I go and get fitted. Only concern is if the gaps below the 7i would get too big. Currently carry around 170y and any further would make it awkward. The retro lofts seems to make them spin and balloon too much which isn't ideal either. They look exceptional tho...

    Hmmm ..James I like the comparisons however I have the P790's and find them very consistent though you say they aren't as you can get flyer's. yet you had a nearly 16 yard carry difference with your chosen weapon the Pings but that doesn't rate a mention??Still a good review.Regards Brett.

      Just ordered mine today. Nothing topped the feel of the 790. Apex was the only club that cane even close for me.

    Like Fixby my home course requires precision and shot making. These superfast irons may suit a sloggers course with long par 3s but no use for a knock down seven into a breeze or a gentle fade to a tight pin. The 790 is super long but the short irons can go waaay too far.

    I am currently in the market for new irons and have hit all of these clubs as well as the Ping i210 and I've concluded pretty much the same as yourself James.......I don't know which to choose. I really liked the Mizuno MP18 SC's but don't think I'm a good enough player (loved them off the mats at the range). Honestly leaning towards the Ping i500

    Love my P790's, all comes down to what feels right for you. Not sure about your comments on inconsistent distance of P790 as i500 suggested similar issues on your test. As you say the remarkable thing about these clubs is that they still perform when the strike is below par.

    I bought a set of used P790s. I'd tried them before and liked them, but if I'd had a choice, I'd have picked the Mizuno MMC irons. They were the best. But way too much $$$ for my wallet. JM2C

    Mizuno for me... Tried all but it's the feel for me. Agree on the lofts though - not really comparing like for like with the distances. All about the gaps for me so the Mizuno lofts are a decent compromise at the top and bottom ends.

    Of those 4 i'd have to go with the TM P790 for the shot consistency, pure Good Looks & Confidence inspiring.. I'm just not sure they'd be best for a 70 yr. old duffer, all it takes is love of the game !!
    That said; I would probably go with Ping G400 , to help my aging game !

    Hi James,
    All lovely clubs but apart from the i500 the rest have such fussy looking heads. ....What is it about the modern golf game that is obsessed with distance. What about learning the yardages of your clubs and working around a course with what you know is the best club in the bag for the shot you are going hit.

    James you have picked some very good irons . What about including the Wilson Staff V6 irons. These are some of the Best irons made. They are as good if not better than the Titleist. You like the Mizuno irons you will like the Wilson V6 better. These V6 are rockets off the face and are forged.
    Thanks keep up the good work.

    While I'd love to be able to afford a new set of irons, I'm unfortunately stuck with my old Taylor Made TD irons...they're about 20-25 years old, second hand blades, but I must say I love them! Played blades all of my golfing days and I just can't use cavity backs or the hollow irons. They just look too big and clunky!

    For me I love my new P790 as they are just so consistent yes every now and again when you completely get one out of the screws they go all little bit longer but down here in Australia we talking metres so it’s not like you were heading over Green as it’s a metre or two longer. I would really like to know are you a professional or amateur and what do you play off

    I'm thinking about doing a combo set of 919 Forged and Tours, the only problem I see is the tours are 2 degrees weaker. Does adding or taking a degree away from the iron mess with the feel or durability of the iron? I really want to do the combo set but don't want to mess up the irons by adjusting the loft. I was thinking about weaking the Forged by 1 and adding 1 to the tours to get them to blend nicely.

    Hi. I would love to use forged irons for the look and feel but I think I still need the game improvement benefits of cast clubs. My questions to you are.are there any forged game improvement irons? If not what are the most forgiving forged irons out there? All brands included. I’m thinking the mizuno forged or the p790s? I’d appreciate your thoughts.

    Love the video James. I just hit the i500 and the AP3 and loved them both. The sales kid was great and recommended a half in longer shaft for the i500. Got a bit of sticker shock when the sales guys said they were $1,200 plus. Am I just being cheap? Are there any other brands similar to those two irons?
