Great review. The ping was further with distance but I think the Srixon was more consistent for him. I would go for consistency every time. If you want longer then you can always just grab a longer club and it’s much easier to do that then to try and create a tighter dispersion
Appreciate the testing for the average player. More in line with my numbers and what I see from everyone else when playing the course. Refreshing test so thanks.
Great comparison! I’ve hit both and had very similar results. I now own the 585s. The ping went further, but when I put (what I felt like really good swings on it) I was not sure were the ball was going to go. The dispersion with the Srixons was night and day.
In all the reviews I have seen on the Ping i500’s everyone talks about the feel or sound. In all these instances, the reviewer goes from one iron to the other. I won’t deny that there is a difference in feel and agree that it does feel more like a ball coming off a hybrid or a fairway metal, but after the first few hits, all that is gone. I went from Mizuno blades to Ping i500. Tons more forgiveness. Loads more ball speed. Much higher ball flight. I certainly forgot about sound and feel after seeing the first 5-10 shots flying high and relatively straight. While I can still pull them into next week, I rarely hit one on the part of the club face that does NOT produce a high long ball flight.
I too moved from Mizzys (MP30s) to the i500s, but after a season I was still annoyed by the larger club heads, especially in the 7-W scoring irons. The difference in lofts made me want to run the MP30s out to be bent to stronger lofts, but I fear the correlating increase in offset. Also, the move to graphite (Recoils) is disappointing to me. I absolutely love the club head feel throughout the swing w/the Mizzy/TT XP 95s, where I can get aggressive but stay in control, but age has informed my loss of distance, apparently.
@@painter7869 now 8 months later the i500’s are gone. I won some tournaments and ended up with $500 proshop credit. I had replaced my long irons with G425 7&9 woods and ended up buying the G425 6 & 7 hybrids. That just left me the 8, 9, and P. I never really like the Pings for chipping so I bought some new Cobra MB (2018) heads for cheap and mounted them on SteelFiber shafts. They are plenty forgiving in these lofts, look great in black, and are great around the greens. Ended up with a pretty unique bag arrangement. Driver, 4 woods 2 hybrids, and 2 irons and 4 wedges. For the first time ever I have consistent gapping throughout the bag with forgiveness at the top and accuracy at the bottom and my handicap has been cut in half.
Love this review. Chris has a lovely swing and hits a great ball. The srixons look awesome. I'm gonna test those soon. I'm a 15 handicapper so not sure I'm quite good enough for these clubs yet.
His second group of three shots with the Srixon were fairly tightly grouped, and the distance was closer to the Ping (with it's slightly lower loft). Would have liked to have seen the yellow "circle" around just those 3.
Why would you take out the bad shot from the i500, but the first 2 shots with the 585 when they were two of the first three he hit when he wasn't warmed up. Don't know about you, but you're not looking in the bushes for the 585's which I prefer. Uncontrolled distance is not better!
Interesting test. L-R dispersion is down to face control, front to back is more down to the club. On that basis the i500 is very good on consistency front to back, I am not sure how much the L-R dispersion is down to Thomas or the club. As far as spin rate is concerned based solely on the data, the i500 is mightly impressive. At least 1/2 maybe 2/3rd of a club longer than Srixon but with not much spin drop off. The thing that would worry me about the i500 is the gapping through out the bag - something other reviews have noted, and whether the hollow headed design gives the odd knuckle ball that flies 10 yards further than expected, although as I was warned off Thomas's CF16s for exactly that reason maybe the latter is not really a problem. The Srixon is a really nice looking club and with a better forged feeling. On looks my preference is the Srixon. Now you need to try out the M5, the 790s, the 919 Forged and 919 HM Pro (the forged is incredibly straight hitting but slightly too long in heel to toe for my eye) and the CF19s
Justin Stephenson Great observations. Much of the left-right dispersion with the PING i500 is definitely a result of Chris' face angle and path, as he tends to swing too much in to out and then depending on the clubface can see a lot of curve to the left or a shot that stays well right of the target. As you mentioned there are a lot of really good options out today in the players distance iron market. If you're not signed up to get our online newsletter, At The Turn, which you can do at 2ndSwing.com, make sure you do so. We're going to have an article in there this Thursday (4/25) in which one of our writers tested and compared the Hot Metal Pro and the Apex 19. But we'll also be doing more tests with these types of irons for our RUclips channel. Thanks
You said that the L-R dispersion was better with the Srixon - however, you did delete his first pull hook with the Srixon. I have tried the Ping i400 crossover against the equivalent Srixon and lost so much distance with Srixon that I had to buy the Ping
i-500 is showel size in compared to Srixon, much bigger and much less players iron imho. The Ping i-500 is second biggest club I have ever hit, the Mavrik is slightly bigger. Feelwise you cant even compare these, the 585 is different league.
Dispersion is better with his Apex Pro. If you had mixed in shots throughout the fitting with them, he may have had more distance with them than Srixon with better dispersion while warmed up.
i have the ping g400. got back the distance i've lost but.......no stop even with the higher flight. even with high priced balls i have to allow a lot of roll out on the green. it's very frustrating
randy underwood the only additional thing you can do equipment wise is add loft to the irons for additional spin. G400 typically had above average spin compared to other game improvement irons from that year.
@@2ndswing right. i was trying to get my distance back. i'm 64 and have some physical issues. going to look at some forged traditional lofted irons. $$$$$ rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
These test do little justice to on course testing. I own ping I 500s. I do not have stoping issues on greens period! My 5 and 6 irons both stop within a yard or less(if properly struck) and I back up 7-U wedge. I am. 9. Love my clubs. I played mizUno mb 18 prior. I have reg graphite shafts at 63 grams and my 7 iron swing speed is on average 83 to 85. Love these clubs and their feel. I think people spend more time looking at numbers than playing and fixing their swings!! My opinion of course. Good review. Buy the pings, swing smoother, with better tempo, work on path, face control, and rotation!!! I bet you will find the dispersion and distance will get much tighter!!
Great advice. Every player has different strength and weaknesses and we try to appeal to a broad spectrum of players by advising occurrences that may happen for players with less stick control. Keep up the good work!
His attack angle could be better for both clubs. That's why the balls are rolling out and affecting his spin. His second shot with the i500 literally had a positive attack angle. Tour average is -4 - -6, that +1° attack angle would be phenomenal with a driver!
@Chris Wallace thanks Chris, didn't mean to be so harsh. Just watched you in another video and sure enough you're picking the ball off the turf with no divot! Lol. Anyway, I'm sold on the i500s! Thanks again!
Sean Uryu For this video, our primary focus was to see how the two heads compared and we picked the Modus 105 because it's one of the stock offerings for both the i500 and Z 585. If we had been trying to fit Chris correctly into one of the two iron models we certainly would have tried different shafts, but in this case we just wanted to see what the numbers looked like when using a shaft that players would likely be considering in both of these irons. Thanks
Dont see how you can compare the cheap looking/feeling Srixon and the Ping. I have hit both and they are not in the same league. It is like comparing Mercedes to VW. They both function well but one is obviously better.
Great review. The ping was further with distance but I think the Srixon was more consistent for him. I would go for consistency every time. If you want longer then you can always just grab a longer club and it’s much easier to do that then to try and create a tighter dispersion

Which one is better to putt with?
The trackman is definitely jacked. 80mph swing speed and getting 167 yards of carry with 21 degree launch just doesn’t happen, even with 5k spin.

Wicked swing
Apples to apple you would have him hit his apex 6iron 30degrees which is basically the same long as the i500 7iron 30.5degrees

@Chris Wallace One of the all-time greatest, Tom Watson, was a picker. I wouldn't focus much on that element of your swing.
Did you try different shafts?

Thanks Sean!
Srixon is the best club for me.
srixon clubs, especially this set are tremendous
I agree, both options here are still a great used option - Thomas
You got to love ball's off a mat with those jacked up track man
180 yd 7 iron? that's crazy
Those must be power specs
get a guy to test clubs that cant hit it straight , with a swing with many moving parts. what's the point?
2019 apex iron should be the right club... stay away from the pro...
