This song Mandolin Rain was one of my wife's favorite. It takes me back to Saranac, Mich. 80's. We were so happy and in Love. God bless her soul. She passed away November 2011. Patricia was only 52. Now, I am alone and lonely. There isn't a day goes by but, I always miss her and think of her.
I am a 38 year old African American woman and this song just brings so many memories back of my childhood. This whole album actually. My mother used to play this album incessantly. I was sitting at my desk today and wanted to hear just the way looked it up and then played this as I LOVED this song so:)
I am a 40 yr old African American woman who fell in love with this song back 1988. I was still in love with it in 2005 when my daughter was born. Her name is MANDOLYN RAYNE.! SHE IS JUST AS BEAUTIFUL AS THIS MELODIC TUNE......THANKS BRUCE!!!
Me and my girlfriend arrived at our house with our son the other night and this song came on as I parked the car. I just sat there and remained seated after we had stopped to listen to the rest of the song. It wasn't that the song was making me reflect on anything special, but the fact that it has felt like years since I have heard real music. Music created out of emotion and passion, not out of the latest trend or quest for fame. Good music.
Amy F You know I thought I was the only one that felt like crying when I hear that piano riff!! It is absolutely beautiful and I'm like you when I heard this song in 1986 I was hooked!! Great song and great memories!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
God can do amazing things when we are with him. Heart and soul brings this. He gets to sweat too. I can run this song over and over in my mind. No more pain.
I looooove that song. I listen to it everytime it rains... today it's raining so yes I'm listening to it again. But you know what ? I never get bored of that song, cause it's such a beautiful ballad. Bruce Hornsby is seriously talented, he can play that piano like no one else !
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and it will Never get old ❤❤ it evokes so many great memories of my teen years 😊 gah how I miss those days!!! It’s like someone else in the comments said this song makes me sad and happy at the same time!!
Here in Japan. Listening with a bit of heartache. This beautiful song always makes me weep. It reminds me of something beautiful--which I've lost somewhere, long time ago in my life.
Many of these 80's songs bring so many memories to each one of us that lived and grew up at that time. Despite us not knowing one another at that time and now, It brings me a sort of happiness and appreciation knowing that I wasn't living this alone as we all lived it at the same time and that some of us think of those times just as profound and realize the deep and rich times we all lived.. just as I do. I'm not sure I got my message across but, it's "cool" :)
My parents used to play Bruce Hornsby for me when I was a baby in my playpen in the early 90's. I can still remember looking out the skylight on our high ceiling while listening to this.
I've seen Hornsby a dozen times and he is one of the best live acts out there.Everyone who even remotely likes his music must see him live. It's worth every dollar every time.
Yes what a wonderful musician and pianist behind great songs....many remind me of being 4 or 5 in the car with car with my single strong mother cranking the tunes on the way home from Crystal Beach, ONT...
Gosh this song really really really puts me back to when I was a kid. I miss those summer days.. going on road trips to see relatives... I miss all these moments..
This song is beyond music, it's simply a work of art. So powerful and so touching (this coming from a guy who listens to hard rock.) The rest of the men out there I think have to agree with me when I say "So, who is she?" We all have that special one, the one that got away, but always remained in our heart. This brilliant song captures that in every word. We all know that feeling.
How can I forget about Mandolin Rain, one of the best songs ever wrote and sang for one of the very best song writer and singer of all times: Mr. Bruce Hornsby. I dont know why this remains me one special person that I Knew long, long time ago.
This is definitely one of my favorites. I call all of his music "feel good music." I'm calm and I always have my center when I listen to his music, especially this one and "Every Little Kiss." Heard him in concert at the Jazz Festival in 1987. To this day, his music never tires.
I love that youve shared YOUR gifts with me....they ministered to me in my younger days more than you'll ever know...and now...they continue to bless my creative side as I draw and paint.
Had a chance to see Bruce solo in a college performance in Georgia in '97. Didn't know it was a solo gig til I got there. Was really bummed that 'the Range' wasn't there...until Bruce started playing. I never knew how good he really was or how much he held back when playing with the Range until that night. A lot of ad-lib & improv mixed in with the favorites. Amazing. Turned out to be my favorite of all his shows I've seen. I do believe he will be considered one of the masters of his time.
Bruce is one of my favorite songwriters, and unlike a lot of people I enjoy all his work. But Mandolin Rain is one of his best songs. Simple, heartfelt and bittersweet.
He's still a magnificent talent. He never compromised to sell records, so his loyal fan base still buys his stuff and attends his shows. He has always been a musician first, entertainer second-a novel approach in 21st century america.
This was the first Bruce Hornsby hit I heard, and have been hooked ever since. And along with Thunderlips, my wife would never understand. Thanks for the memory !
For the first time in my life I like someone else's idea so much I'm inspired to use said idea! Lol No worries though no kids and don't plan on having any!
Every time I hear this song it takes me back to the old college days at I.U.. Met a great chic from Dallas. We were inseparable . Things went real wrong and she left school. This song makes me think of her every time I hear it. Miss you AMY!
I'd greatly appreciate it if some Bruce fans would check out my channel for acoustic piano & vocal covers of 80s/90s classic songs. Real live acoustic with no autotune. Covers include Sting, PRINCE, George Michael, James Taylor, Pete Townshend, Earth Wind & Fire, Counting Crows, Supertramp, and Billy Joel. No Bruce yet as he is awfully tough to do justice to, but will get to a couple eventually. Thanks and please excuse the promo.
I can't believe so many years has pasted, since we were in our teens. I remembered clearly as it was pouring out while you and I were standing at the edge of the tent looking out talking and smiling, just like the lyric said. I remember thinking of this song at that very moment and knew that I had to held on to that special moment even without you knowing it. I still catch my breathe and thinking about you everytime when I hear this beautiful song. Thanks for the memory and experience!
Heard this when it came out in the 1980 's driving up from Sydney. Australia via Hornsby to the then Byron Bay. Going past Hornsby I would always play this song. It is now 2021, and I am still listening to it.
Words cannot explain the beauty of this live performance....everything is perfect and the drums as the end feel, sound like waves hitting ocean rocks...gorgeous..
The first song I had ever heard from him Mid 80s on VH1 - the rest is history - totally providing a GREAT melody to my life through the mid nineties, and renewed with Hot House in the early 2ks. Thanks Bruce..
this song surely brings a lot of fond memories when i used to grow up in the small town of kingston ontario. though I had returned to malaysia for twenty years, i can still recall listening to this great melody on the local radio while traveling to school each morning. yeah! no doubt he's magnificent.
I was a kid in the 80's and 90's and have grown up listening to and enjoying soooo many kinds of music. Metal, Alt Rock, Grunge, Punk, Pop, R&B, Rap/Hip Hop, Reggae, Country, Blues etc.. I love music and it's effects and how it can change your state of mind so quickly. The 80's were a special time for music and many of these 80's classics can stop me in my tracks and get the memories flowing. This song here is very soothing in my ears and reminds me of my younger days when life was full of hopes and dreams and lacking in responsibility. Thank you for this small gift Mr. Hornsby :)
beautiful beautiful song...evrytime i hear it...oh God...i remember my mom,she loved it staxx....i was very young...but everytime i hear it,it takes me back to when she was still here and life was beautiful!!
He was early in his career here and you already hear him alter the melody of the lyrics. If you want to see a performer perform a song exactly as it was on the popular recording don't see Bruce. His jazz influences bring a fresh version every time he plays his songs. I first heard him locally in 1978 before he became famous. Hands down the artist I thought if he didn't make it big some day with his talent there was something seriously wrong with the music business.
Bruce has so many good songs...the river runs low tonight..barren ground....i always felt different because i appreciated good music...i was 15 when this song came out. I had one of the first discman and listened to this over and over on a bus to georgia!!!!
I seriously have had this song pop into my head many times over the years but couldn't figure out what it was. I was just talking about it with a buddy the other day, then that night while perusing the other night, one thing lead to another (long story) and I found it. I was so happy. Great song
Beautiful Story, Mrs. Robyn Hawkins...I used to Blast this in my Dorm Room at JU in 1988, my freshman year.. Created several new fans for Mr. Hornsby, because of his piano playing..
I got back in to Phx after a friends wedding in Toronto and really didin't want my weekend to end. I saw Bruce was in town palying at the Mesa Amphitheatre. It was sold out but I really wanted to see him so I stood out in front begging for a scalped ticket. I got in and made me way to the front and what an incredible evening. He played everything on his 2 albums and for encores did Leon Russell tunes. Bruce is one of a kind.
This song reminds me of every young love that i had. I am 37 and my sister is 27. She posted this song on facebook one day and i smiled. I was so proud...that kid has taste!
Yes... this song from Mr. Hornsby is solid gold, and very sad, as it provokes thoughts of a love I knew back then I had to leave behind... she was so special, I wanted her to have a good life, something I couldn't give her... if someone you love you want to have a better and good life, you would let them go... that I did... today she is living a good life with someone else she had married... a secured, good life... As for me... well... at least I know she is happy...
Vc é simplesmente ótimo no que se propõe a fazer! Sinto falta de canções como as suas hoje em dia! Essa em especial, todos tem uma história pra lembrar e relacionar. Você é o cara!
That's like saying to the young people in the 80s, "I wish people today who enjoy pop music and hard rock would connect and enjoy 60s rock". It is what it is. Time moves forward not backwards.
The song came and went Like the time that we spent Hanging out from the rain in the carnival tent I laughed and she'd smile It would last for awhile You don't know what you've got till you lose it all again Listen to the Mandolin Rain Listen to the music on the lake Oh listen to my heart break, Everytime she runs away. Oh listen to the banjo wind A sad song drifting low Listen to the tears roll Down my face as she turns to go.... The song is about a failed romance. The couple's favorite thing to do before they broke up was watching the rain, so watching it now reminds him what he lost and couldn't get back.
this music brings back memories..lots of memories.. thanks my to my late brother mikot , the first time he played this music in our cassette player.. I start to like this song..
I am a 41 y/o b-boy from Philly and I love this song. To the ignoids out there, 2Pac sample one of his song and didn't change the melody at all. The video to this song is off the charts. Good music is good music; no matter who it comes from who what genre it is categorized in.

Bless you Rerone! Peace is found in lots of crazy ways! Such a beautiful song to remember loved ones to.
Hope you are well. Memories can be painful at times, but we heal through it all.

That's soo awesome Robyn!
Had not heard this song for at least 45 years. Still beautiful after all these years. Thanks.
This reminds me of my parents. May their soul RIP.

100 years ago... They will never come up with a car greater than the Ford Model T !
@Rondie Rice automobiles have advanced, music has regressed
One of the rare tunes that appeals to the heart and memory of days gone by without a hint of the cheesy factor. Bruce Hornsby is one gifted dude!
Dear God I cry during every one of those piano riffs....he is sooo gifted!!!! Fell in love in 1986 and still touches my heart today!
Amy F

Bruce Hornsby, do you realize how great you sing and play? Come back to us! I, for one, miss your gifts. Hope you are well!

A style unto his own.. incomparable and timeless. His music still stirs me!
This is such a beautiful song. Reminds me of summers in the late 1980s. Just a wonderful song.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and it will
Never get old ❤❤ it evokes so many great memories of my teen years 😊 gah how I miss those days!!! It’s like someone else in the comments said this song makes me sad and happy at the same time!!

Here in Japan. Listening with a bit of heartache. This beautiful song always makes me weep. It reminds me of something beautiful--which I've lost somewhere, long time ago in my life.

Just fantastic! His voice had a great range back in those days. Love it Bruce!!
My parents used to play Bruce Hornsby for me when I was a baby in my playpen in the early 90's. I can still remember looking out the skylight on our high ceiling while listening to this.

Hornsby and the Range had one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL sounds of any musical artist out there.
Had a chance to see Bruce solo in a college performance in Georgia in '97. Didn't know it was a solo gig til I got there. Was really bummed that 'the Range' wasn't there...until Bruce started playing. I never knew how good he really was or how much he held back when playing with the Range until that night. Reminds me growing up in 80's lovely, stressfree and innocent!!
Such a sweet yet sad song at the same time...Hornsby has the rare ability of combining the two in a melodic song that touches fans' hearts.
I am African American and I purchased this album when it was new. I have never forgotten this song it really resonates for me. So many memories
Bruce !!!!!!! Your Song was travelling with me all over Australia in 1988 .- For this I will shout : " Thank You ."
Bruce is one of my favorite songwriters, and unlike a lot of people I enjoy all his work. But Mandolin Rain is one of his best songs. Simple, heartfelt and bittersweet.

Makes me cry rverytime. One of my absolute favorites :-) truly talented
The song came and went
Like the time that we spent
Hanging out from the rain in the carnival tent
I laughed and she'd smile
It would last for awhile
You don't know what you've got till you lose it all again
Listen to the Mandolin Rain
Listen to the music on the lake
Oh listen to my heart break, Everytime she runs away.
Oh listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go....
The song is about a failed romance. The couple's favorite thing to do before they broke up was watching the rain, so watching it now reminds him what he lost and couldn't get back.
This brings me back to happy times (no cell phones ...still getting my fingers black reading the newspaper)...miss those times.
This reminds me when music was still music.Good Golden Oldies
this music brings back memories..lots of memories.. thanks my to my late brother mikot , the first time he played this music in our cassette player.. I start to like this song..
I am a 41 y/o b-boy from Philly and I love this song. To the ignoids out there, 2Pac sample one of his song and didn't change the melody at all. The video to this song is off the charts. Good music is good music; no matter who it comes from who what genre it is categorized in.
First got turned onto him with the other ones in 98 and been amazed ever since... Thank you Bruce..
Oh Bruce. The memories I have shared that has blended with your piano and your oh so hauntingly beautiful voice.
My first love and I would listen to this song over and over again
