  • Today I walkthrough, explain, test and review the new Tascam Mixcast 4 which is a podcasting console similar to the Rodecaster Pro. I compare the preamp to the Rodecaster Pro 1 to see if there's a significant difference or not, test the SM7b on this interface, and walk through all the processing, and software.

    I've had this as my main podcast station for about 5 months now and absolutely LOVE it. My only complaint thus far would be the lack of voice mod/effects such as raising or lowering your voice pitch on the fly with a phaser would have been cool! Thankfully they are always adding updates to the firmware so it's possible features like that could easily be in the works.
    Fun Fact! I've always used it connected via USB to my 8-USB 3.0 hub and I've thankfully never had a connection issue!

As a solo live streamer, live podcaster, etc. you said you wouldn't recommend this device so curious what you would recommend. What about something like the GoXLR or an Apollo Twin? I'd like to have live vocal processing (compressor, EQ, de-esser, etc), good preamps, and broad app compatibility.

    As always, appreciate your videos! I just bought one. I'm solo live streamer whos been very well served by a MOTU M2 for a couple of years EXCEPT I can get very animated with large volume fluctuation and have wanted a compressor to tame it - So I bought the Tascam. I agree it sounds great. I run an MKH 416 into it and all is good - Except I get a ton of feedback out of my speakers (I wont use Headphones) which I do not get from the MOTU. USB Mix Minus didnt address it and Feedback Prevention cuts the output from the line out - so unfortunately the Mixcast is going back. Do you think a DBX into my MOTU would be a good solution?

    Can you recommend a preamp or interface that would work well with a vintage C414 B-ULS? Because that's already a dark mic it can't darken the sound and has to be a noticeable improvement over the Focusrite Scarlett and Behringer UMC interfaces.

    Since you love the LA2-A, you might be interested in some numbers for its release time. The time is heavily dependent on the depth of limiting. More limiting = faster release, less = slower. I don’t think it ever approaches 110mS. Probably more like 250mS for deep limiting and 1000-1500mS or even longer for shallow. I hope these help.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  2 года назад

      Thank you so much Peter. I looked it up while editing because 110 didn't seem right to me. I found that it's a multistage release and it's typically around 50% release by 60ms. I'll give 250ms a shot next time to try and get a more accurate to the LA2A.

    I've been looking into getting an audio mixer to possibly replace my interface because I like the thought of not needing so many digital filters, and the main thing that's holding me up is whether each input will show up on my computer as individual inputs.
    I record through OBS Studio for doing Let's Play videos. I'm currently using a Behringer UMC404HD because I wanted the option to add more mics if I ever got into more group oriented recording. For the longest time I was only able to record two stereo channels until I found that I needed an ASIO plugin. Now I can record with up to 4 mics each on a mono channel so I can edit each track separately.
    If I were to get this mixer, do you think/know if I'll have any issue with recording 4 individual mics?
    I also kinda like the flexibility of being able to record without a computer. My buddy and I have been planning to branch out from Let's Plays to do a podcast and it would be nice to just set up wherever.
    Thanks in advance for your input if you see this and have time to reply.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  11 месяцев назад +1

      This probably would be overkill for that. The Focusrite Vocaster is pretty good. The Rodecaster Duo seems like it might fit the bill. There's the Rode Streaming device that just came out that may fit the bill for a solo streamer though. There are a lot of options and it's going to rely on what your specific needs and features needed are.

  • @coffeehigh420
    @coffeehigh420 10 месяцев назад +1

    Podcastage, really would appreciate your insight here ... I'm considering this thing (the deal that is Tascam Mixcast (you understand) .. ok seriously though, would you recommend it and feel kinda good doing so over the Rode deal ? I'm looking at spending 299 (got a good deal for a new one waiting for me) ? thanks in advance. ... mainly i'm looking for this thing hopefully with latest firmware updates, that they have improved the software quite a bit .. for example the noise gate, compressor, etc. - to help dial in what you want a little better and sound overall better and more natural vs the rodecaster that appears to honestly have this thing beat by miles. ? thanks again in advance.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  10 месяцев назад

      In this video I discussed the Mixcast 4 vs. Rodecaster Pro. I think the features are pretty comparable, but I prefer the sound of this over the RCP. If you're talking about the rode caster pro 2 then that is the obvious winner though.

    • @coffeehigh420
      @coffeehigh420 10 месяцев назад +2

      Rode caster pro 2 was what i was referring to. Yes, I absolutely agree w/you in that the updated 2 wins hands down over the Tascam Mixcast ... but the pricetag ? $699 vs $299 ? that's a pretty big difference. I think for the MOST part, if you know what you're doing and can dial in manually the de-esser, compression, mix-minus setup for phone calls, skype, etc., is there REALLY a big improvement with the sound quality overall ? oh by the way, that new EV mic sounds pretty good! condenser and EV I think just makes for the most part, really solid gear. Last thing with the Tascam name.. after all is said and done this IS Tascam. They've been around forever with all things audio console / recording going back to the reel to reel days.. so thats something in itself over the Rode, no ? - perhaps why you actually like the sound at the end of the day coming from the Tascam model over the Rode. I know Rode is catching up fast, but still Tascam is, well Tascam :) @@Podcastage

    I use the Mixcast with 3x Zoom ZDM-1 Mics, but there is an absoule white noise in the Background always! The Mics are hissing like Carzy. Any Idea what can I do against it?

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  11 месяцев назад

      Is the white noise on each individual track or is it on the stereo mix. First thing I would do is make sure that all unused channels are muted or turned down. That will ensure that any preamp hiss from unused channels are not adding excessive his. If there is simply hiss on each of the channels, that is likely due to the preamp noise on this device. There would not be much you can do about this on each channel other than adding a gate (But the hiss will still be there once you start talking again). You could also make sure that while a mic is not being used it is attenuated so you aren't adding a constant hiss to the full mix because that underlying preamp noise on each track will compound.

    I really love how intuitive it seems to use this device and the feature set of it. I agree that this is overkill if you are a solo podcaster or streamer. I would like some recommendations of an interface that is similar to this but more catered to an individual. I know they exist but… not sure where to look.
    Specifically I would like the ability to have a compressor, soundboard, and phone or bluetooth connectivity like this interface. The other features are great but not essential for me.

      There's still not a solution like that other than the GoXLR. The new Focusrite one is the closest to that, but it lacks the soundboard.

    It's funny how gigantic the steps of the gain knobs are, the noise test showed it pretty well. What manufacturers do with digital devices like that these days is they have hard stepped analog DCAs as gain stages, and in between the steps they just digitally boost the signal. But right know the only step I could hear (macbook speakers tho) is around 31dB which means bellow that the gain is at +0dB analog with digital trim, and after that +31dB analog with digital trim reset, hence why the noise suddenly disappears, if you have a mic that needs somewhere around 30dB you're way better off going for 31 than 29 or 30.

      @@DrGDaniels yes. That is the Gator part number. The quick release attachment. It does indeed work on any stand with a 5/8” attachment point possibility. It adds about 3” in length, though. There maybe scenarios where that’s too much. It can be interesting inside something like an IsoVox .

    I have had the Tascam for a few months now with no issue. A friend joined me and he has a loud booming voice. His mic keeps cutting out when he gets excited about what we are dicusssing. We have tried multiple mics , no sound suppression , no peaking gain is properly set for his mics. No one’s else’s mic is cutting out. Is there a limiter or a setting I’m missing

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  11 месяцев назад

      That sounds incredibly strange. When you say you have tried different mics, are they different models of mics, or just different copies of the same mic? If they're all the Rode NT1, I have heard of this happening when you overload the capsule it goes silent for a little bit. So it's possible there's a plosive hitting the diaphragm, it overloads the mic, and it goes silent. But I would with the mic manufacturer first because that's where I've heard about this happening before, the mic may just get overloaded. Sorry I don't have an exact answer, but I hope that helps.

    I thought this thing was great and was going to make it my primary audio interface, but there’s a problem. It’s hardware is fixed at one sample rate 48k. I did some research and it seems that all of these things Rode, Zoom, Tascam, even the Boss is single sample rate only. The ASIO driver for the Tascam seems to do some real time conversion but not automatically switch the clock.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  Год назад

      That's strange that it would allow you to change the sample rate and record at a sample rate that the hardware is not able to convert at. I can imagine that would cause some artificating or latency issues for you. What kind of issues are you encountering with this?

      @@Podcastage In Sound Forge when working on a 44.1 file stop and restart playback takes longer and the sample rate when stopped shows 44.1 but when playing it shows 48k but in italics. So Sound Forge is using italics to show its not the native rate of the file. Other than that it works OK but the sound is not as clear and punchy as when using my Focusrite 6i6 where the hardware clock automatically switches to 44.1 when working in software at that rate.

    • @Podcastage

      I pulled out the Mixcast 4, updated the firmware, and tried to come up with a solution. Unless I'm missing something very obvious I could not identify one. I tried the feedback prevention setting to see if it muted only mics, but if any mics are open, it mutes all playback through monitors so you get no sounds at all.
      The second test was I thought you would be able to solo the tracks you wanted to playback through the speakers (so solo the effects/usb/phone/etc, while leaving the mics un-soloed), but the monitor output does not mirror the headphone mix; it is post fader mix and there's no way to adjust that. That something that Tascam needs to fix in a firmware update, they need to have the ability to create a dedicated mix for the monitor output.

I wonder if Tascam is going to move the unit to approximately this lower pricing tier to be super competitive. There's about 9 hours remaining for the sale. Also, this may also (I'm not 100% on this) qualify for the free accessories bundle from Tascam with proof of purchase (16GB SD card; TM-70 mic; and TH-02 headphones).
