    I started with just the video instructions and was not able to make a 9" square from four 5" pieces. I experimented and it would need to start with 5 1/4" squares to make a 9" pinwheel. I finally looked at the pattern and now everything is working out. I have half the final squares done and need to finish converting the last 10 pinwheels. The written instructions are clear and my pieces are working out precisely. I had to take apart and redo the first three to make them the right size. Thanks for this tutorial.

    Absent a spin mat, a helper ruler to butt against the measure ruler and used as the cutting edge eliminates awkward cutting mechanics. Beautiful project. I see that your directions include the Magic 8 method for HST production.

    Dear Sew Yeah instructor: How big do the half square triangles need to be (before you sew them into the pinwheel) to end with a finished 9” square? I did exactly what you said to do and my pinwheel block (before I cut it up) measures 8.75. Thank you! (Adorable quilt and baby!)

      Hello! Thanks for watching! Here is the pattern for that quilt. He does say the square will be 9 inches in the video, however, the pattern allows for the square being about 8.75 so that isn't a problem at all! www.dropbox.com/s/jrzc22u3ptfdrtm/Baby%20Pindash.pdf?dl=0 I hope this helps! Good morning, I really like this block but would like to use a layer cake.
    I know I could cut into 5" squares but looking to make a larger block.
    My question is.. instead of the 3" cut off each side what measurement would I use?
    My confused brain says, block size is double so the 3" strips would be double also making them 6" off each side?

    • @SewYeah
      @SewYeah  2 года назад +1

      If you use 10" squares, your block would be 20" wide, minus your seam allowance, which would still just be 1" even though you are using larger blocks. So your pinwheel square will be 19" wide. To cut that in thirds, you would measure 6.33" inches for your cuts. I hope this helps. Happy quilting!

    I'd love to add this to a sampler quilt I'm making with 12.5" finished blocks. What size would I need to make the squares? If I did the math correctly, I would need to start with 8.5 inch squares. Is that right? And would 3 inch cuts still work?

      @@SewYeah Sure thing, I do know math, therefore I did my own updated pattern 4+ yrs ago. My comment was for those who don't know how to map out a pattern and or just don't even know there is a mistake until the poor soul cuts wrong or doesn't have the fabrics needed, too bad the boys never came up with a solution to all the comments for soo many years, that now we are getting thanks for watching, little emojis or just thumbs up. Still no answers for the then needy.

    Has anyone tried this make this block? I have tried twice and with exact cutting per video the 1/2 square triangles come out smaller than they should be. This make the pinwheel at least 1/4" smaller on one side.....help!! losing my mind in California!

    • @TheColourBlindQuilter
      @TheColourBlindQuilter 4 года назад +3

      @shirl glenoaks I’ve tried a number of times with 5” charms and it always ends up as 8 1/2 finished. The half square triangles need to be 4 3/4 inches before joining together. The only way I could make it work was to start with 5 1/8” squares and make half square triangles that finish as 4 3/4”. They make a 9 inch finished pinwheel with careful 1/4 seams. You could always cut 5 2/8” squares and trim them down if that easier to cut. I’ve no idea how he gets 9” pinwheels from 5” squares.

    • @jenifferfoster4312
      @jenifferfoster4312 4 года назад +4

      Or do what I did. I did the math and you can't cut it 3 inches in all directions if it's not a 9 inch block. You have to divide your FINISHED BLOCK IN 3 OR THIRDS . SO IF YOU HAVE AN 8.5 INCH BLOCK YOU HAVE TO CUT IN ALL DIRECTION LESS THAN 3 INCHES. TO MAKE IT EASY ON ME, I HATE MATH, I DID A FINISHED, SEWN, PINWHEEL SIZE OF 81/4 (8.25) THEN CUT IN ALL FOUR SIDES OR DIRECTIONS AT 2 3/4 (2.75) INCHES. FROM THE OUTTER EDGES.BYE I TRIMMED MY FISHED HST TO 4.375 INCHES BEFORE I SEWED THEM TOGTHER INTO THE PINWHEELS. SO WHAT EVER SOZE YOUR BLOCK IS DIVIDE IT BY 3, THE CUT IT HOWEVER MANU INCHES YOUR GOT AFTER DIVIDING IT BY THREE (3) IN ALL DIRECTION ORBOMNALL FOUR SIDES...GEEZ HOPE THAT WASN'T TOO CONFUSING.

    • @annettestolba4033
      @annettestolba4033 3 года назад +1

      His measurements between the written pattern and his video are off. Using 5" squares you will get an 8.5" pinwheel NOT 9", wish the 2 had matched with measurements, would have been less confusing.

      It didn’t work for me either. Try 5 1/8” squares to make half square triangles that finish 4 3/4”. When you join then together you get a 9” square. Hope that helps. I now have a LOT of half square triangles lying around :-)

    my square never measures 9 inches. I am using one quarter inch seams. What am I doing wrong? I want to make this so bad. Messed up 5 squares. HELP!!!!!!!!

    • @SewYeah
      @SewYeah  Год назад

      So sorry you are having trouble! Do you have the printed pattern you are following? The square may end up being a little smaller, and if you are following the pattern, it will need to be trimmed down as well so it may be okay. Here is the pattern:cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0578/1841/5283/files/Baby_Pindash.pdf?v=1639754628 I hope this helps! Thank you!

    I really like this quilt but when I make the block it is never 9 inches. It is 8 and 3/4 inches or somewhere in there. Then when I cut it into 4 quadrants it is never the right size with the 3 inch measurement. How did you decide on the 3 inches? It doesn't work for my 8 3/4 inch block.

    • @wandaphilbin7529
      @wandaphilbin7529 4 года назад

      I tried this block 2 times and it never came out 9”. Always 8 3/4”. I even used less that a 1/4” and pressed after each seam was sewn.. Mathematically it doesn’t work out using a 5”square to make your 1/2 square triangles to get a 9” block.

      Thanks Wanda Someone said they cut the block down to 8.5 in square but I don't think that cutting 3 inches off of each side will work for that size either. I saw Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Company use a process like that so I guess you have to divide whatever measurement you have by 3. I think I will try that and see if it works with the 8.75 inch and the 8.5 inch block. Thanks for the help.

    Your measurements you state in the video are not the same as in the print out of the pattern. ie in the video you instruct to square off the block to 9x9 and then cut strips of 3 in. In the printout it says 81/4x81/4 square and strips to be 23/4. Can you clarify??? 👍👍
