You hit the nail on the head: I was in the dealer yesterday lusting after the GP. I get why e.g. MTs exist, but they don't grab you by the heart - I wouldn't turn back to look at one of those after I parked up. If I had a GP I'd be walking backwards, couldn't take my eyes off it, or the crowds it's bound to attract. As great as it looks on camera, it's awesome in the flesh...
You're right about the belly pan completing the look. The bike almost looks unfinished without it. Super good looking bike. I hope they bring them to the states. Might get me back on a sport bike again.
Really hope we get this in the U.S....... I've been anticipating an R9 forever but i'd buy this in a heartbeat as I love the classic styling and it's a little more comfortable than a true supersport.
I swore it would take something truly special to make me trade in my street triple, and this could be it. Unfortunately I'm in the wrong country right now
@@tyranid05 I was close to buying a used Daytona 765 because they were $20k brand new damn near and found one near me for $10k but missed that opportunity. Idk if they'll bring one back but in cheaper form like the old Daytona 675.
You ride that, and I will keep riding my 1976-RD-400 !! It’s absolutely glorious, and I hit 105-mph yesterday with more to go!! The 70’s were epic!!! Long live the 2-stroke!!
I had a 500 for a year ....can't afford another one $ 30 GRAND ish.... if only I'd kept it... I bought an FZ750 the 500 was like riding a GP bike EVERYWHERE
At last a manufacturer making a ‘themed’ / retro bike and looker but didn’t go down the budget suspension, electronics, fit and finish. Well done Yamaha. They should do a R1 based bike ‘themed’ retro bike.
Thanks Chopsy! Been waiting for you to test one! As a 50 year old it brings back great memories of my first road bike. One you mentioned in your introduction. A TZR-250. What a bike. Having ridden dirt bikes as a kid I remember the very first corner I took I put my foot out just out of habit to realise on l’m now on the streets. Interestingly, at 189 cms I don’t remember it being small. This is one bike I’m looking at buying this year. 😊
I definitely like the appearance of the bike and technical features. The front reminds me of the character Ironman and his iconic front mask, which is a big plus.
Honestly, the design looks almost like a carbon copy of the lines of my 1993 FZR 600. The tail is a bit more up and square but the side and front profile are 100% FZR 600. Love it.
As someone who hero worshipped Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey etc back in the day, who rode a TZR 250 ( then an RGV) I absolutely love this bike. Not sure the misses would be quite so keen though 😔😞😞.
im in my 30's and i love this type of look, i dont know why theres only a few newer models that i like but when i look to a bike from the 80's and 90's that what makes my heart beat fast 😅 this is on my radar, but then again i saw the new CBR 600RR and love that look. But this bike, love it, so beatiful.
I toyed about replacing my 2003 R6 with something like this, but after years of more and more speed cameras, dash cam wankers, roads getting crowded. I fitted a ABM raised handle bar conversion. Now I have the comfort of a sports tourer but the handling of the R6. I can ride for hours now at road legal speeds and not have any sort of wrist or arse pain. Combined with the quickshifter, total cost inc bike, 4k. That's a winner for my. I'll spend the 9k I've saved on some trackdays and holidays.
Thanks for this great review, i ordered one few days after the presentation at Eicma last year, never purchased a bike before a test ride, but i loved how it looks and i am very happy to watch all this positiv feedback, this review here was on of the best so far, thank you for that, cant wait to receive my GP. I was riding sport bikes for almost 15 years and 3 years ago i decided to swicht to a GS, it was not my plan to purchase a sports bike again, but ... then i saw the XSR 900 GP :) Il keep my GS and the GP will be my second bike for shorter touring days :) By the way, this is my first Yamaha ever, i was always more a Honda guy.
Love it, this and the XSR900 Naked are on the shortlist. I think the Naked needs a rectangular headlight to pull the whole 90s, fairing off, street fighter reference looks together and this, the GP, should've had fairing mounted mirrors...Just a couple of design details, but of the two the GP is certainly the looker.
Got to buy the belly pan! I think the gap between the belly pan and the cowl is correct as it matches the gap between the tank and the frame. Esthetically it also needs the upgraded exhaust.
I think you're right about the paint schemes. And I imagine that other retro Japanese sportsbikes will come out if the XSR takes off. Like a Ninja 900 replica or slab sided GSXR...
Awesome, the only bike i would start riding bikes again is that one, full-faired like my old rd350 or rd500... 53 yrs old here so just my bag. would of loved to see some rd350lc style clocks, even with a bit of digital somehwere. we just need an old retro Marlboro jacket
I think I'd go the Stealth Grey/Black to avoid getting pulled over by the constabulary all the time. Ducati had a lovely black and gold colour scheme back in 1979.
Bell do a RSD carbon black and gold ( JPS style) design i was looking for a link but not possible to insert here. that could look Pretty cool too. ( more F1 though ;-( )
I loved the look of this bike from the minute I saw it, it's the first bike for years I've thought 'I've gotta have one' Went to the dealer in someway hoping it'd be too small for me at 6ft 3.... I'm sat on it thinking, bollox, now I've gotta buy one! All the reviews are great so I'll be on one spring 25
So this is basically XSR900 with some differences in dimensions and chasis (caster angle, trail, rear travel). Plus 7kg in weight due to the retro styling. Looks fantastic though.
I still own a red and white UK spec TZR250 so couldn't wait to see reviews on this when I saw it. It needs the bellypan and full system side exhaust but this makes it a 15 grand bike. Not sure about the bar end mirrors as they were always on the fairings and the early TZR and faired RDs never had the metal fairing bracket in the 80's either. Still want one to go with my TZR though 👍
My FZR 1000 and YZF750 R from the 80's and early 90's had exactly that top fairing bracket. My only criticism is the bottom fairing looks a little odd and does not quite match the top fairing properly. I would wait and buy a better matching one from an aftermarket producer. Same with the exhaust.
Brilliant chopsy , had me back in the mid 80s there I had the rd 500 painted myself in the Marlboro luminous orange great old days , they look great the Yamahas there 👍 a real world sports bike Yamaha have there.👍👍 great stuff chopsy .😁
Really love your work. One crit is we're all bike riders here and I don't ride with my vision focussed three foot in front of my wheel, can you lift the camera a bit, thanks.
Would've thought I'd prefer the fully faired version, but for some reason the half fairing just completes it. I would surely add the race exhaust option though :-) Yamaha was never on my radar when it came to bikes, never cared for them much, but this one is just special, I really like it.
I want those raised clip-ons for the Speed RR. It's REALLY dumb ABM the only company making some for the RR used different dimensions so you can't have the heated grips.... Not sure how well this will sell but praying we get the R9 next year. This GP looks absolutely lovely!
Great video chops. Should have done it also in the lovely Sonauto/gauloises [Christian Sarron] blue. Maybe next year. Out of interest would you take this over the Velocity Moto XSR900 with the RD500 body kit in the colour of your choice?
As someone of the original era,got to be the half fairing...had the choice with Ducati SS back in the early '90's,half fairing was way better looking...and easier to keep nice,no hidden crud eating away at the engine paint! Had the original TZR250 back in the late '80's too,my tuned ministock was faster...loved eating pistons though!
I had a new YVPS back n the day ,,,, one thing i noticed was the back wheel was planted under braking/acceleration, due to the rising rate linkage ,,,, leaving all twin shockers feeling like shopping trolleys,,,,, now this bike hasn't a rear rising rate system,,,, would that be an improvement??? It's a long time since i last rode, but no reviews mentioned such an important information,,,, is the rear tyre planted solid???? 🥂🤺👍
Great test report, the only problem i see is the cost once youve "specced" it up to the max, back end looks a bit stubby imo, i wonder what it would be like with its little brothers shorter swing arm !, be a proper hooligan machine, the standard cooking model looks a little disappointing compared to the all singing all dancing model, if i'm honest i prefer the bemoto rd500 version, but ive always hankered after a marlboro paint job, decisions decisions ,. cheers choppsy,..

I’m in the U. S., own 2 Monsters (S2R 1000 and 1200/85K miles total), and would buy this tomorrow to replace them.
They will this is gonna sell
@@PEZ1514 I really hope they do, it would be a mistake if they don't.

Yeah ... And i bet you had a fizzy and it done 60😂

YVPS / YVPS , 🐎🍀🤺👍 YVPS
At last a manufacturer making a ‘themed’ / retro bike and looker but didn’t go down the budget suspension, electronics, fit and finish. Well done Yamaha. They should do a R1 based bike ‘themed’ retro bike.
Speed RR or Superveloce? The CB1000R Black Edition isn't too bad either but I really don't like to group it with the other retros
I think the rear suspension not rising rate , 👍
This bike is elegant in design but even more romantic in how it rides.
Reminds me a lot of the TRX850 - which is a good thing in my opinion ❤
The TRX was a bike before its time.
A classic now
Love it, absolutely love it…but a Yellow and Black Kenny Roberts replica may be even better!
you said it
That's too good!
Great bike, I love it!
I'm going to ride it all over!
The half-fairing version looks like the 90's Ducati 900 CR. This needs to come to the US, ASAP!
Best launch video. Thanks for the enthusiasm and details. Paint close up was really appreciated.
I can't remember a bike that had the interest round it that this one did. Glad it's lived up to that.
Great stuff. Thanks for the review.
Glad you enjoyed it

I hope they do so I can buy one used 7 or 8 years from now😊
We never get the good bikes here 😔
51 sold so far
I'm not even from the US but want you guys to experience this so thumbs up from me!!!
Yamaha hates us.
RD 350 all grown up. I want one. I miss my RD350 LC.
Although I'm over 50 i wasn't mad about bikes in my young days, however, I get it, beautiful and this colour scheme. POPPING
Honestly, the design looks almost like a carbon copy of the lines of my 1993 FZR 600. The tail is a bit more up and square but the side and front profile are 100% FZR 600. Love it.

Very very nice.... beautiful machine....I agree lower fairing looks best. Nice one Chopsy...from a 61 year old 👍

Prefer the looks of the Velocity Moto kit with the faux square headlight but this kit is also really cool.
That's a work of art.
Top work from Yamaha as usual. ❤️
I just wish the digital screen was at least round to suit the rest of the bike

Great review & great bike. Such a stunning looking machine. I really hope it sells well & other manufacturers follow suit.
Been waiting for your review on this. Bit late to the party but I’m sure it’s worth the wait 😊. Best looking retro in my opinion

Nothing that can’t be done with some fibreglass and a repaint. ( and a bit of know how)
I agree with that to, also I think the seat cowl is a bit to short it's like a tz from the late 70s , one like a 0w01 or tzr 250 3xv would look good,

I still own a red and white UK spec TZR250 so couldn't wait to see reviews on this when I saw it. It needs the bellypan and full system side exhaust but this makes it a 15 grand bike. It's much more a 90's thing the top fairing bracket but yes the FZR1000 did have one.
Best looking bike I’ve seen in a while damn

I think one of the other journalists said there was a preprogrammed phone under the seat with the route set. Drop dead gorgeous bike 👀.
Yeah could be the case.. I did look under the seat and didn't see it. Apparently it was fixed to the actual seat 🤷♂️

We need this stateside ASAP!!!
I like it In that color scheme a lot, not so much in the black. Nice video Chopsy.

She’s a good looking girl ❤, as always Chops keep up the good content.
Is the riding position more extreme than the Aprilia RS660?
Hmm, been years since I've ridden an RS660.. from memory it's very similar. Perhaps slightly more sporty
This will be nice in the new R9 fairing without an extremely sporty stance
Stunning looking machine
Beauty, and if they make an R9, may aswell take my money now
With a Metchamex esq under braced box section swinging arm to finish that look 😮 suit you sir!
I wonder if the Marlboro orange will fade after two weeks in the sun like it did on my FZ 750. Worth waiting for the blue Gauloise paint job.
No not with modern paints it will be fine. They did some sort of 5 layer paint finish to prevent that
An OW-01 color scheme or some of the Suzuka 8 Hr colour schemes will be bonkers
