I have been a Buick guy for well over 40 years. I have a close friend with a rotisserie restored Saturn Yellow GSX, with about 500 miles on it since a total restoration. It is basically a new car. Buick fudged the horsepower numbers of the 455 A LOT!! But it is the torque numbers that are really astonishing.
and that 510 number came at the very low rpm of 2800; when i was 16 i got my first stage one. i ruined lots of hyped cars image around town. looking all bad assed and really most of the time the mods where small and all about the look. only very serious cars where up too racing a big block Buick. especially when my dad started to put it into a insane modification experiments. roller cam and rockers ta performance everywhere oiling mods, same with the cooling. and the fuel system, with 900cfm holly ta aluminum intake, Kenny bell pistons massive valves, 10.5, 1 compression was where things start to get fast. and he built and designed a main baring girdle as well. it was a tried and true 492 ci build. long before it was well known to many engine builders in our time and especially when you consider we live in north battleford Saskatchewan Canada. we basically killed everything for miles back then. well except for our really close friends 69 gtx. that car was retarded. no one even came close to it. not even us. what he had done to that 440 was pure evil. this car and ours would find money races and we made out pretty great. never lost on the streets and sask is a place were farmer kids spend tones on cars. that car turned us into racers and to this day i drive a 69 skylark custom special. this car is like a brand new car. never a dint or scratch. interior with black everything on silver gauges and shift council is no different. with the grip and most of the top of it also being the same mettle looking silver, on black. it looks like a 1500 mile car in and out. pure buick good looks with the swooping body work and rear bumper that screams exotic muscle. oh and fully functional , real, ram air system that works at hi speeds lending an extra 10 -20 hp at and above 100 mph. black vinyl top with a repaint on the body. i painted it myself and it is perfection. 2008 corvette yellow. bear-claw discs all around with 4 piston calipers. modern suspension upgrades everywhere and also i have replaced all bushings with polyurethane ones. this is the best handling muscle car i have ever known. oh ya. electronic dump gaits. on true 4 inch pipes. from here i am committed to buying the new block from ta.performance. the 4 bolt aluminum block that they bought the rights to build. a few years ago the Buick engineer that brought us a stage 1 and 2 was working on a new engine for motorsports . this was the mill that would have made Buick a race championship juggernaut. project x it was called. look it up.
The only reason Chevys got lots of attention was because they were cheap & parts were very plentiful!!! The only really good stock Chevy engine were the 327's,396's, & the 409's. The early 350's & 454's were oil burners & the 305's had cam issues!!! The Mopar 426 hemis & Ford 429 Bosses kicked Chevys ass all the time in the earlier NASCAR days!! Chevys never won shit until they put restrictor plates on the Hemis & Boss engines. Richard Petty ( Plymouth 426 hemi ) & David Pearson ( Mercury Cyclone 429 Boss ) dominated with about 300 wins just between them!!! Just a little history lesson!!!
In 1980, seeing it in a front yard every day when I'd drive to lunch, I stopped off, saw, drove, bought a GSX Stage 1, but mine was Black with senior matte black stripes. (Repaint). I had some money left over from a 71' 455HO Trans Am sale (I had 4 ) bought the one owner, 34,000 mile loaded GSX for 900 dollars (gas crisis days) drove it 6 months, used it in trade to buy my 1st Corvette, a 69 427 tri-power... yep, those were the days...

I'd drive my 1971 GS to car shows and some thought it was a Chevy with Buick badging. Those were the old days, now everyone is clamoring for Buick muscle!
The biggest giveaway that Buick fudged the numbers on their 455 was the same base non stage 1 455 was rated at 370hp in the bigger luxo cars like the electra and riviera. And because insurance premiums were on the rise with young buyers of badass muscle cars, they started downplaying HP a bit. It's kind of brilliant what most automakers did. They just took the HP rating at a lower rpm. Yeah, it certainly does make 360hp at 4800rpm. It also certainly makes 400+hp at 5500 rpm. Insurance companies didn't give a damn about torque, as you can tell.
Yes insurance and government were paranoid about top speed and the ability to out run a police car, and its just all impossible, they only looked for a way they could tout it , as a so called 'reason' to gouge money and squeeze money from anyone any way possible , and that is their only goals, its all they are about.
Had the 70 stage 1 back in 82' black on black fully loaded. It was Dyno at 417 hp. Only the 69 Zl1 can beat this beast. Only 1 in 3 million had one, so chances are your not going to race one.
Dude in the Chevy was more experienced driver for sure, I'm betting he was smarter about working within the rules, GSX seemed like it was built exactly to stock and had a much less experience drag racing. He should have smoked that Chevy. The GSX was the fastest car in 1970.
Great races but the buick showed its square block with huge torque was a superior "stock" profile was faster but the thin wall construction of the 455 couldn't oil its engine under stress like the superior 396 rectangular block of the chevelle. I love buicks but they needed a better oiling system to keep from over-heating that made the chevelle with its superior oiling and cooling system so much easier and "cost-effective" modificational engine a much better drag racing car......
In the early 90s I had an Aztec Gold GS 455 Stage One. 4 spd...3.42 Limited Slip...Black vinyl top. Car was all original. Still kick myself for trading it off.
In 1969, GM punched the 396 to 402 cubic inches. This was my first year working for a Chevrolet dealership and the start of a very long career. The reason for this was actually one of economics. If you are old enough to remember 1970, you will remember that Chevrolet introduced a new engine besides the 454. It was the 400 fat block. That my friends was the 402 cubic inch 396. The reason that this was marketed as a 400 instead of the 396 was simply to get rid of the backlog of engines and to make the public think that they were buying something new and not an engine that had been around since 1965. They continued to use this engine in many vehicles through the 1972 model year in both cars and trucks. In 73, it was also replaced by the 454.
As wonderful as a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 is, it was not going to match this spectacular 1970 Buick GSX Stage1. After all, that Buick is the personification of their old marketing campaign: Fast with Class.
For those who either didn’t hear the announcer, or don’t know that one can win a race with a higher ET... The announcer declared the Chevy as the winner in round 2, though with a higher ET, which means the Chevy had a quicker RT. Time slips would be a great improvement to the channel, or at least declare the official winner.
Lol! I almost forgot about the cars! You’re destined for greatness Mr. Personality! Love your style and these cool videos! And the sound effects... OH YEAH!!!
Takes me back to dragging main in the summer of 1968. Didn't see but maybe one Buick GS 400. GTOs, the SS396 and Road Runners were 90 percent of the muscle cars.
@@arniemeyer7774according to Road & Track, a 1970 GS Stage One 455 posted the quickest 1/4 mile time in the history of their test runs. So No, the LS's weren't quicker.
I think the EPA gave auto makers a break on emissions if the engine was 400 inches or bigger so Chevrolet bored out the 396 to get the emissions break but keep the 396 name plate because it was so popular. Great job on the videos!
Every documentary I ever seen said that they didnt claim 402 due to the popularity of the 396 name. It was the flagship of power for the 60's and everyone wanted one. They didnt want to chance losing sells.
I’m in Notmrthridge Ohio in a red 73 Trans Am 455 and I’m looking for the guy in the yellow GSX running around here. If you see him, let him know.. would ya
Sure was. The Buick ran what one would have run stock, but that chevelle was running at least a full second faster then stock. But then again, they do allow a few "mods" on these cars so.........
You dont get more American than GM in the hp wars era. A bunch siblings fighting each other even though they are family. That competition though gave us the most epic Pontiac, Chevrolet, Buick and Oldsmobile muscle cars ever!
I had a 70 Buick Grand sport GS Stage 1 and it was really powerful. Also had a Chevelles SS396. It was even faster but it had some soup in it. Mommy's home made beef vegetable soup! Love the show!
I had a friend in school with a '70 396 auto. Mostly stock, it was barely faster (14 flat quarter) than my '77 TA with headers and mild cam, but when we swapped the SS's Qjet with a Holley 750 it wasn't even close!
Back in The Day I had 1970 SS 396 Chevelle and later added a 1970 SS El Camino. The mid 13 second et’s on stock tires is spot on. With slicks, mild cam, headers and Edelbrock intake with 780 Holley you’d get 12.70’s. I drove the 1970 SS Chevelle with this setup to Earnest W. Seaholm High School, Birmingham, MI, back in good ol’ 1974. Same school as Tim Allen, and 2 people from Mama’s & Papa’s.
So a year late seeing how my car would do against the iconic GSX back when it was stock (now a 502/200-4r) except mine just had the 331 posi. But otherwise, same right down to the green interior! Now just gotta find the vid of the Ls6/T-400 matchup with GSX...
First car I ever owned 1970 Chevelle super sport bought it in 79 for $1500.00. All matching numbers fastest car I’ve ever been in. Came with air shocks from factory just let the tag down and air them up. Wish I still had it. Probably 30-50 thousand dollars now.
@@willpowers4762 nice !! I remember drooling over those when they were still new in the showrooms. I love the aggressive front nostrils and t-tops. The LS1 is such a fantastic engine and everyone I’ve seen is underrated. I’ve seen a few F bodies from that era make almost as much power at the rear wheels as they were rated at the crank
@@CarsAndZebras The only time they 'got it right' is when they used George Thorogood in the mid 80's with his "Bad To The Bone" song and awesome video for the Buick Grand National. But when top Buick Brass saw the commercial, they went ape sh*t and ordered it taken off the air, go figure......
The 3rd run was more typical of how these cars ran on polyglass tires. I can't figure out how these cars turn the times they are getting with stock motors on stock tires. I find these E.T.'s a little suspect. I was there back in the late 60's early 70's at the drag strips and the E.T.'s were a lot closer to what the magazines were getting than what they are running at this track. It could be the traction material they are using today at the tree is much better.
@@theangrydragon182 I did. The description of the slight mods don't explain these cars running 1.5 to 2 seconds quicker than when they were new. In 1970 a stock Chevelle 396/350 was a high 14 low 15 second car as an example.
@@motorman857 - so, let me get this straight... you don’t think increasing the compression ratio 1.5 points, over bore 0.070, electronic ignition, mandrel bent exhaust, carb rejetting, tuning for 110 octane, and running modern tires (that look vintage) will give you 1-2 seconds improvement? Well that’s just plain stupid.
I knew the Stage 1 car would win in all 3 races, but was impressed with how the Chevelle performed, especially in the 2nd race. For a 350 horse engine, it did a great job. Sadly, the driver got too anxious to win and launched too high in the 3rd race. "Spinnin' ain't winnin." I think if it was geared in the 3:55 range, the SS would have performed quicker for its torque-curve. The GSX may be argually the quickest muscle-car of the ara, but I think, because of its price and much higher sales numbers, the 396 Chevelle was the King of the Street. There were faster cars, but more Chevells out there winning on the boulevards.
As a 17 yo unemployed teen I found and drove a 71 GS stage 1 auto that would chirp the tires when it shifted, not to mention shred them with judicious application of the throttle. It had hub caps and was $500 in a small used car lot in Lincoln NE. I don’t think they knew what it was, but I sure wish I had a job, course might not have lived this long if I had.
Two of gms best 1970 beasts. The yellow gsx one of the best, most beautiful cars ever made. Luxury and that outside hood tac 455 500 lbs torque. Killer looks . 70 chevelle . One of the most manly man cars ever made. If GM put the rounded tail lights like the on the71 and 72 on the 1970 to match the quad headlights......wow
You did not mention the H.P. rating of the 396. It looks like the low horsepower oval port engine that was rated at 350 H.P.............The 375 H.P. option was a COMPLETELY different engine. It was a hell of a lot more H.P than the 350 H.P. version.....
The reason for not changing the badging on the 1970 chevelle. Years prior the spent bundles of money on the 396 advertising they didn't want start all over with just boring them out to 402 cubes to produce some extra horses, so they retained the expensive prior advertising of the 396 badging with a few extra ponies, and torque numbers being pushed out.
The same car with 4spd & professional driver ran 13:58 @ 104.5 See the January '70 issue of Motor Trend. I bought a copy on eBay. They didn't actually test the GSX.
Those cars were under rated to get around the insurance surcharge I was going to get a gray one with black stripes . In 3 years the insurance would cost me more than the car, so I didn’t get it. Ended up getting a 340 Duster which didn’t cost so much for insurance as it was 275 HP which was below the insurance surcharge.
I have a friend who bought a one year old used GSX that was traded in for a new bout tail Riviere. I was a custom order paint color , it was a metalic copper color. The man that traded for a new Riv ordered it in the same color. Friend no longer owns the GSX but I know he wishes he did.
As a kid in the mid-90's I had a chance to buy a Stage 1 / TH400 yellow GSX. Instead I bought a '71 LS5 / M-22...unfortunately I got in over my head trying to restore the Chevelle and had to sell it.
Really have to wonder if these guys had the engines built a "little hotter". I'm not sure I could handle Arma rods, cast pistons with no hardened seats during my rebuild...
the Buick is on the lower end of the entire group numbers. they can run deep into the 12s on bias ply tires. just have to know what to do to the tuning so as to have it running as optimal as can be. none of the 396 cars ran that great that i have seen but like i said. optimized cars run faster. few pounds here and there plus the fuel and little things we dont see. can make them run great.. is it still stock? sure. just not what i have been up against all my life. a 454 yes. swapped and now a ringer? now that story i can buy.

👍 for The Departed intro
👍👍👍
For those who either didn’t hear the announcer, or don’t know that one can win a race with a higher ET...
The announcer declared the Chevy as the winner in round 2, though with a higher ET, which means the Chevy had a quicker RT.
Time slips would be a great improvement to the channel, or at least declare the official winner.
If he had a quicker RT, he should also have a lower ET.
Lol!
I almost forgot about the cars!
You’re destined for greatness Mr. Personality!
Love your style and these cool videos!
And the sound effects...
OH YEAH!!!
Thanks again for watching!
Love this type of drag racing, the car's are as the way they were produce from the factory for the most part
great video on buick gsx
two of my favorites..................thank you. Nice nice cars.
Thanks for watching!
Takes me back to dragging main in the summer of 1968. Didn't see but maybe one Buick GS 400. GTOs, the SS396 and Road Runners were 90 percent of the muscle cars.
I like the yellow GSX better. It appears to make the black stripe on the side pop a little bit more. :€)
2 Great cars. Love them
Would have been great to see the GSX against the Ls6 Chevelle or the Ls7 ;)
the LS 6 is quicker & faster !
@@arniemeyer7774 Yet watch the stage 1vs ls6 on these videos , the Buick won 3 in a row...
@@arniemeyer7774according to Road & Track, a 1970 GS Stage One 455 posted the quickest 1/4 mile time in the history of their test runs. So No, the LS's weren't quicker.
That GSX with that turbo 400 transmission is killer that’s what made it faster
Reading and watching comparisons of classic muscle cars it seems the GSX is the most consistent q mile winner
Pretty cool car
My vote is the Buick 😉😈
I think the EPA gave auto makers a break on emissions if the engine was 400 inches or bigger so Chevrolet bored out the 396 to get the emissions break but keep the 396 name plate because it was so popular. Great job on the videos!
You are correct about the emissions, but for some reason Chevrolet never confirmed why they did it. Thanks for watching!
If you see him, let him know.. would ya
Wow close races, WOW
Great races, I just wish that Chevelle would have had better traction in the 3rd heat.
Sure was. The Buick ran what one would have run stock, but that chevelle was running at least a full second faster then stock. But then again, they do allow a few "mods" on these cars so.........
Dude glad your back awesome videos!!
I rest my case GSX IS THE BALLS
where you still buzzed from new years eve !
Just a little... 😵
GSX is my bucket list dream car.
I like the fact that you included the rules. That is nice to know. Now I need a convertible Pontiac... can def go 13.5 💪🏼😁
I had a friend in school with a '70 396 auto.
An example of two truly bone stock cars.
Nice cars for sure!
I raced a bone stock '70 GSX in 2000 with my brand new WS6 Trans Am. We both ran low 13's, it was a blast !
Those Buick commercials are money
Buick really needs to revamp their advertising department
@@CarsAndZebras The only time they 'got it right' is when they used George Thorogood in the mid 80's with his "Bad To The Bone" song and awesome video for the Buick Grand National. But when top Buick Brass saw the commercial, they went ape sh*t and ordered it taken off the air, go figure......
I just don’t understand their marketing
The 3rd run was more typical of how these cars ran on polyglass tires. I can't figure out how these cars turn the times they are getting with stock motors on stock tires. I find these E.T.'s a little suspect. I was there back in the late 60's early 70's at the drag strips and the E.T.'s were a lot closer to what the magazines were getting than what they are running at this track. It could be the traction material they are using today at the tree is much better.
Read the video description box and you’ll see how they do it
@@theangrydragon182 I did.
GSX. All the way.
My dad's first car was a 1970 Nova SS with the 396
That " has less hepatitis " made me burst out laughing@ 4 am som fkn reason!😂🤣
Excellent races. Would have been better if the Chevelle carried an LS-6.
These videos are great.
Imagine how fast the GSX would be if it was lighter in weight. Dam I love that car. I will find and own one, one of these days, oh yes I will.
There were faster cars, but more Chevells out there winning on the boulevards.
like your video's ,,enjoy watching
In 1970 I was about 10 years old and crazy about the Mongoose and the Snake also the Plymouth Duster.
Your editing skills are damn good
As a 17 yo unemployed teen I found and drove a 71 GS stage 1 auto that would chirp the tires when it shifted, not to mention shred them with judicious application of the throttle. It had hub caps and was $500 in a small used car lot in Lincoln NE. I don’t think they knew what it was, but I sure wish I had a job, course might not have lived this long if I had.
Seems like the 454 SS would have been the fairer match up.
Why does it have to be fair?
Can you find a race featuring the 70 Dodge Dart Swinger 340? Or maybe one going against a 70 Duster 340? Now that would be interesting! Thanks.
Yeah, that would have great!
You did not mention the H.P. rating of the 396. It looks like the low horsepower oval port engine that was rated at 350 H.P.............The 375 H.P. option was a COMPLETELY different engine. It was a hell of a lot more H.P than the 350 H.P. version.....
Go to 7:07
My buddy has one. One of the funnest cars I’ve been in
Cool fact about the deck spoiler on the Buick, some extra pounds hanging on the ass end would likely benefit the weight balance.
Amazing cars 🔥💯
The reason for not changing the badging on the 1970 chevelle. Years prior the spent bundles of money on the 396 advertising they didn't want start all over with just boring them out to 402 cubes to produce some extra horses, so they retained the expensive prior advertising of the 396 badging with a few extra ponies, and torque numbers being pushed out.
Bruh that Buick commercial bit had me dying of laughter. 👍 for that
👍
Another great video 👍👍
Plenty more to come! Thanks again for watching!
Am I wrong or did that GSX run slower than road test in 1970??
13.38 at 105 in 70
The same car with 4spd & professional driver ran 13:58 @ 104.5
See the January '70 issue of Motor Trend. I bought a copy on eBay.
They didn't actually test the GSX.
Happy New Year Buddy...
You too! 🎉
I like how you glossed over the torque numbers
I would sit through these videos even if I was blind. The announcer keeps bringing me back. HA! 🤣
3:14 😆 torque monster Buick 👍🇺🇸
The torque of those cars is crazy! 👍
That Buick is right at the top of my favored car list. The 70’ Chevelle 454 is right there too. I’m gonna guess the GS takes the win.
I'm a Chevy man!! But Buick's going to take him from 0-60!!
And beyond obviously lol...
11:24 dope transition
Those cars were under rated to get around the insurance surcharge I was going to get a gray one with black stripes . In 3 years the insurance would cost me more than the car, so I didn’t get it. Ended up getting a 340 Duster which didn’t cost so much for insurance as it was 275 HP which was below the insurance surcharge.
I have a friend who bought a one year old used GSX that was traded in for a new bout tail Riviere. I was a custom order paint color , it was a metalic copper color. The man that traded for a new Riv ordered it in the same color. Friend no longer owns the GSX but I know he wishes he did.
...also i diagree with the "different torsion trunk spring"...
All they did was put it in the highest hook
As a kid in the mid-90's I had a chance to buy a Stage 1 / TH400 yellow GSX. Instead I bought a '71 LS5 / M-22...unfortunately I got in over my head trying to restore the Chevelle and had to sell it.
Patrick Glen Nichols just found a white one with a 4spd, the window sticker was $5000+ and with financing was $6000+ new
John Wick 70 Chevelle SS !!!
great vids dude!
When gm built cars I'd want to drive.
Sssspectacularrrr
I would encourage anyone who has a restorable muscle, restore it or sale to someone who can and will.
Buick GSX for sure
..the buick looks 100% way better !! ..gorgeous car man !!
Very funny and fun video
Thanks! Plenty more to come!
I Love Your Memes Man LOL 😂
Even though I'm a Mopar man, this just shows off the 396 as being a very formidable engine. Definitely my favorite coming from GM.
Gw Mcklintock The 427 was a little better in my opinion.
@@beckywatt5048Well Miss, allow me to Enlighten you about my comment. I didn't put it out there for dispute. I said it was my favorite engine from GM, I didn't say it was the best.
