Inalienable! That was the word I was trying to think of but couldn't remember. Thanks for using it, I think it sums up an important value.
I totally agree about the sensory stuff, it would be virtually impossible to create an environment that takes account of everyone's sensory difficulties - for example I've been in a support group on zoom where one person regulated themselves by standing up frequently and walking around, I found that really distracting and I struggled to pay attention to someone who was speaking because my mind was constantly being distracted by the standing up/walking around person. (In the end I covered-up their cam with the chat-box). Now I don't blame that person at all, but it shows that our needs can sometimes oppose one another. (Likewise, whilst I've not experienced it personally, I know some people have loud stims, that would probably stress me because of my sound sensitivity). Whilst I try not to, I tend to rock back and forth quite a bit when I'm on online groups, and I'm sure that must be distracting to some others.
It was interesting to think about the similarities and differences between the UK and the US in regards to that work ethic and the effect it has on people. I don't know the historical reasons why exactly, but I think the fact that the US has not had as successful a labour movement as the UK has had (historically I mean as today it isn't exactly exceptional!) has left the US open to more domination from corporate interests that help create a culture where people are judged far more by their ability to economically contribute and where there seems to be more barriers for people to access the social support they need.
