6:50 Pikilia directly translates to 'variety', so like pick n mix, a bit of everything on one plate which is different to meze, which is a lot of small but separate dishes cooked to order
Usually mezes is a small portion that comes together with a glass of ouzo or a beer, in order to eat something with your drink. Pikilia is a portion for 1/2/3/4 persons with a variety of foods. In greek Pikilia means variety.
Oh! I miss Greece! I miss my Athens. Since I moved abroad, videos like yours, make me feel homesick and healing my impatience to come back for vacations, at the same time! Thank you! AND I MISS THE FOOD SOOO MUCH!
The reason feta is creamy in Greece is the sheep milk. Feta is traditionally made from sheep milk or sheep + 30% goat milk, but that's expensive, so people might make a copycat cheese using cow milk that's saltier and market it as feta outside Greece (and the EU I think).
yep, what you ate is real feta ...anything else you have tried named as "feta"and it was harsh and salty is a cheap version of feta(white cheese we call it in general).
in the EU they can't, it's a POP so it's prohibited to advertise something in the EU as feta when it is not made in Greece, and it doesn't have sheep milk. The rest here are just called white cheeses.
So true, Dimoshenis Stamatiou. In fact, my late grandmother was able to spot fake cow milk based FATA just by taste sampling, so I had to purchase the real and expensive stuff every time a took a visit and gave her the treat. :-)
@@israteeg752 If you've tried the original feta, it's hard to go for the substitute hehe That said, since feta-like cheeses are supposed to be stored in brine, you can make the brine milder and it'll take some of the excess saltiness from the cheese. ;)
@@Gigi-us4jk you are wrong, i live in Germany you can find in supermarket numerous of feta marks who were all produced here in Germany and they are with cow milk and they named them feta
So glad you enjoyed the food here! Just some (fun) facts: mezes isn't really a dish (at least Greeks don't consider it one). It is actually something like a side dish (that most of the time comes for free) for your drink. For example if you order ouzo or beer they give you a small dish with different goodies (kind of like leftovers but not in a bad way... they do prepare it for that cause) to eat eith your drink. I can be anything from just a tomato and some bread and cheese to actual homebaked dishes. Pikilia can be actually translated as variety and as the name suggests it is also a combination of things that differ. It can be a meat pikilia (varieaty) or a seafood one or anything else. It's like a bigger mezes that you pay for and you eat not necessarily with a drink but on itsown as a meal as well. For exaple if you wanna eat with friends or family at a restaurant but don't wanna pick just a steak but would like to try more, you can grab a big meat pikilia wich will have a lot of stuff like steak, chicken, sausage, meatballs etc. Sorry for the long text and probably bad english! Greece. A crossroads of civilizations and cultures. Cuisines are, of course, an integral part of a country's culture. All of these ideas and combinations have been filtered throughout the centuries by the Greek people, and in combination with the beautiful and very rich Greek land which so generously provides the Greeks with divine materials for their cooking, such as olive oil, they have created the most balanced, healthy and delicious cuisine in the world!
Greek salad looks so good 😍 Love the huge feta on top 😋 Chilli sauce on prawns that’s sounds amazing. Gyros would be the first think we would go for it when we will visit Greece. Absolutely love the video 👍 😍
It's funny that people associate Greek cuisine with gyros, meanwhile this streetfood was introduced here in 50's, with original homemade cuisine had (and still has) too much Pasta (see hilopites, gkogkes, makarounes etc which are part of Greek cuisine for centuries) and has dishes like bean soup, salted pork etc.
Bean soup, lentil soup, lots of fish and sea food, spinach and rice, pasta, some more pasta, pasta with sea food, basically the Mediterranean diet was and still is the real traditional Greek cuisine.
As my Aunt lives in Canada, in most of the places they sell White Cheese as Feta. Feta Cheese has a protect designation of origin. So anytime you buy some, the package should say FETA on it otherwise it's a copycat! Lovely to see you visiting Greece! Thanks guys! :D
If food in Athens is delicious, you should visit the islands, especially the not so "mainstream" ones. Lemnos, Kalymnos, Ikaria, Nisyros, and of course Crete ("mainstream" but still amazing) have food that can really show you what heaven means. P.s. mentioning all the islands was of course impossible 😊 But most of the "not so well known" islands have food sent directly from God's table.
