Oh, my god, perfect timing, we just booked our 1st Athens trip! That yoghurt is 1st on my to do list😃. And pistachio coffe❤ Have you been to the island of Aegina? Supposedly grow the best pistachios there, under 1 hour ferry from the port Piraeus. It's on my list to do.Great video!
So happy you enjoyed the video! That’s so exciting that you are going to Athens, you will have an amazing time! And yes, don’t miss out on the yogurt! We have heard of Aegina, we didn’t get to visit the island but we were able to see it in the distance on a sailboat cruise around the riviera! I’m curious to know what it is like, let us know if we should add it to the list for next time! Thanks for watching and have an amazing trip 😊

Next time exploring gastronomy tour don't forget to mention that Greeks we love and have one of the most complete and delightful fish cousines. There are no many fish restaurants in the touristic centre but surely there are plenty across the city regions especially in the riviera from Piraeus and Glyfada all the way down to Cape Sounio! We love fish, fried or grilled!
Definitely! We wished we could’ve done another food tour, because there are just so many delicious things and not enough time to try them all! We had grilled fish in Naxos, it was incredible!! Hoping to return to Greece for more food, and definitely more fish! Thanks for watching 😊
Man you just reminded me that I haven't had Thanasis' kebab for a couple of years cause I've moved out of the center. I must pay a visit in the next days. Though Thanasis is located at the most touristic area of Athens, the quality remains since the late 70's that went there for the very first time with my Dad. Cheers mate😊
Can be an unpopular opinion as a Greek, but the touristic center is my 2nd favorite area of Athens after Pireaus. I due to its historicity and its touristic nature, you can find literally anything you want within 15 minutes of walking. So much variety can not be found easily in most areas. Plus GREAT cafeterias.

On Athinas str. is the central meat market of Athens. Inside there is a restaurant called “Epirus” (Ήπειρος). Go there for lunch but not later than 14:00-14:30 😊
For souvlaki, really good one in the center, only “Kostas”, on Pendelis str. It’s behind Electra Metropolis hotel. He has no tables and seats, you just eat it standing and DON’T go after 13:00, he might have sold out 😊
Hey, I'm glad you liked our country and food! You might have noticed that the coffee in Greece and Italy, if you've been there, has a stronger kick than in most places in the world. I wanted to ask you where in the US you're from because I'll be travelling there this summer for a roadtrip and wanted to ask for some tips from a local :D Cheers!
We absolutely loved it! We definitely noticed the extra kick in the coffee, it took a little bit to get used to! We are from Wisconsin and Iowa in the midwest. It’s pretty quiet to be honest, but Chicago and Milwaukee are really fantastic cities right on Lake Michigan! It’s such a big country, it can be hard to decide where to go, but the Great Lakes are absolutely beautiful in the summer!
Thanks for a great video guys, I was born in Athens, but I've lived in Canada most of my life, this brought back many fond memories! Although it's a long shot, I hope you can tell me (Max or Sid, or any viewer who might recognize it) what is the name of the bouzouki intrumental song that starts at about the 7'55" point in your video. It is amazing and since I also play the bouzouki (just a little though) I would love to hear this amazing song!!
Thank you for watching! That’s so fun that the video brought back memories of Athens 😊 such an amazing city, we are missing it already! We don’t know the song unfortunately, but definitely agree it was great ambience for our meal!!
Hello to all! I used an app to find this song because it sounded familiar yet very modern. The title of it is ''Manolis Chiotis street'' by George Prokopiou.
As others said Greece have insane seafood but usually travellers don't go to those areas because its hard to skip Athens.. But trust me... the Ambracian gulf has the best shrimp and sea bream you will ever taste 🤤🤤
I hope you head to a super market and buy a small jar or pot full of masticha made in Chios. It's not a sweet easily eaten cause its kind of tough caramel but so unique flavor I am sure you will buy a second one to take it back with you. We as kids used to call it the sub because it was served by our moms to a tea spoon into a glass filled with cold water. So as I described the taste is sinful and the main ingredient the resin is only produced in Chios but it's established to many Greek sweets and it's found after extensive research that is excellent for the stomach and it is also an anticarcigenic substance.
@@S-A-M. i totally believe you. It really does wonders to the digestive track and is sure to kill a specific helix bacteria that does ulcers to the stomach if left untreated. The producers of masticha in Chios with the help of the state have build a research center that studies all of masticha properties with the help of various scientists from medical schools of Greece. The best thing is that if you chew some it leaves you with very fresh and pleasant breath as it also has cleaning properties.
@@MaxandSidney I think I forgot to mention that masticha is added to many sweets produced in Greece and gives them their unique flavor. And a piece of useful info. You can find gums with masticha named ΕΛΜΑ or pure pieces of resin to almost all the little kiosks that you can find in Athens or Pireas. I strongly recommend to buy the resin and try it with a glass of hot milk by crushing a couple of chunks or it can be added to your coffee especially if you drink it hot. It adds superb taste to it.
thank you for your info but I have some questions and I hope you can help me because I am going there I want to know is it safe city is it ok walk at nights alone? and is there any office that I can get ticket since I hate using those machines or its only machine can you give me some info I really appreciate it.
Thanks for watching! It is a relatively safe city. Some pickpocketing and tourist traps etc, but definitely safe to walk around. And yes, I do believe they have alternatives to the ticket machines! Hope this helps 😊
What you don't like in "Greek yoghurt" is fat-free yoghurt. That's where the chalkiness comes in. The real thing, called strangisto in Greece, is a strained full-fat yoghurt. After straining, it comes in around usually 9 to 11% milk fat. The real thing also doesn't use any fake thickeners like guar gum, gelatin, or carrageenan. Bon appetit! Kali Oreksi!
Stay away from centre restaurants. That's like 50% good food. If you search out of center like nea smirni or pagkrati, you gonna find something amazing. Low prices and best quality food. For sea food search Faros in Pireaiki. One of the best food and cheap
As an Athenian, I've never been to almost all of those "must-go" places all these videos recommend. I know some of the history behind SOME, but it's not something my friends and I are crazy about. Not once we said: Dude, lets go order some souvlakia from "X" restaurant downtown Athens, because they are the best. There are, for sure, some classic shops that have been there since before my dad was born, but food is good whenever I go. The tourist spots just have more gimmicks. Edit: I was told that food is actually better outside the Athens center. Can't compare, I eat in the suburbs.
It definitely seemed like it was hard to find any bad food! I’m sure there is plenty to explore outside of the city center as well, just another reason to come back one day!
no local eats at those places! They're not bad places by any means, and if you like what you see in the video, I do not advise not going, their ingredients are fresh and you'll have a good meal. Just know that it's touristy and you are probably paying more than you should. For a full greek meal, i'd suggest the tavern across the "serbetia" at psurri, it's 3 minutes of walking from thanasis.
Lovely video, I love Athens and Greek food and I remembered how much I missed Alfa. But one question for you. You are so close to real capital, constantinople. Why dont you stop by and taste the original recipies on the source. Its also cheaper nowadays.
Despite Greek food being really good, I feel its very poorly represented internationally. Its very very hard to find proper Greek food outside Greece. When I was in the US whenever I found a Greek restaurant they used to serve me a portion with rice, a stick with chicken or some other meat and a little bit of tzatziki which was served hard as stone. After 3-4 times of the same experience in multiple countries I stopped visiting Greek cuisine restaurants outside Greece.
We definitely can see what you mean. Gyros can be found all over the US, but many of the other dishes are probably very bad representations of the actual thing. We’ve never had anything in the US that compares to what we had in Athens, that’s for sure!
Believe me mate the only Greek yogurt you are going to have is in Greece. 99% of "Greek yogurt" you eat elsewhere is "yogurt like" desserts. You can find them in Greece too but they are not allowed to be labeled as yogurt in Greece because of the law.
O thanassis is a tourist trap but its normal that how you gonna know this if you domt live there but if you enjoy It its okey thats the important hello from Greece
Hellas is not only Athens and the south part,,,Is also the north ,Epirus,Macedonia etc have better cusines than Athens.. If you want the real deal try not to go in the center of the big citys..the food is not very good... Im a local

Thanks for playing greek music on your video
What you don't like in "Greek yoghurt" is fat-free yoghurt. That's where the chalkiness comes in. The real thing, called strangisto in Greece, is a strained full-fat yoghurt. After straining, it comes in around usually 9 to 11% milk fat. The real thing also doesn't use any fake thickeners like guar gum, gelatin, or carrageenan. Bon appetit! Kali Oreksi!
Funny that im from a placé of greece called chalkida.....!!! But...i live in France😓
Exactly 👍
Ahh, that makes a lot of sense! No question that the full fat version is much better! Thanks for the info 😁
Stay away from centre restaurants. That's like 50% good food. If you search out of center like nea smirni or pagkrati, you gonna find something amazing. Low prices and best quality food. For sea food search Faros in Pireaiki. One of the best food and cheap
Thank you for the tip! We definitely want to explore further out of the central city next time we are there!
When did you visit Athens?
September and October of last year. We had such an amazing time!
no local eats at those places!
We will have to try Serbetia next time! There were so many good places, it was hard to choose!
@@MaxandSidney I hope you enjoyed your time in Athens, and I hope that you'll also enjoy it next time!
Fredo espresso only in Greece
☕️👍
Porto kalapita?😅. You said it wrong. Its all together portokalopita or orange pie.
Haha 😂 it was so delicious! Absolutely loved it
@@MaxandSidney the tone is on o in the lo. It literally translates to . orange pie
U miss a LOT without visiting ISTANBUL 😮
Lovely video, I love Athens and Greek food and I remembered how much I missed Alfa. But one question for you. You are so close to real capital, constantinople. Why dont you stop by and taste the original recipies on the source. Its also cheaper nowadays.
It will be a very good opportunity to admire all the Greek monuments. Do not forget that the 65% of Turkey is really Greek.
So glad you enjoyed the video!! We have plans to visit Istanbul this year, we can’t wait to see it!
You just went to all touristic traps!
If those were traps, they were delicious ones! 😂
@@MaxandSidney 🤣🤣🤣
Monastiriki square? 😳😳🥴
😆😂👍
After trying it in Athens, I definitely think you are right! Never had anything like it in my life!
all these spots are tourist No1s.
Thats not portokalopita thats revani
Revani?
@@MaxandSidneyI think he meant ravani
@@MaxandSidney It's revani and ıt's not even Greek.
Nothing wrong with the video, just that it's been done a million times before 🤷
Best Greek food is GYROS !
O thanassis is a tourist trap but its normal that how you gonna know this if you domt live there but if you enjoy It its okey thats the important hello from Greece
Thanks for watching! 😊🇬🇷❤️
Το κακό με αυτά τα βίντεο είναι ότι στο τέλος πεινάς κι εσύ!
That’s true!! They can definitely make you hungry 😆 thanks for watching! 🇬🇷👍
All videos about Athens show almost the same places
yogurt made from cheese??? I didnt know that
*milk, which cheese is also made with! 😂😂😂
@@MaxandSidney Oh
Hellas is not only Athens and the south part,,,Is also the north ,Epirus,Macedonia etc have better cusines than Athens..

Interesting! There is so much to discover, we can’t wait to come back!

As a greek i cant stand seeing these "graffiti" one word tags that teens think is cool to draw literally everywhere
🙁
Yoghurt is made with milk, not cheese😊
Yes, that is definitely what I meant to say 😂 I had goat cheese on the brain! The yogurt was so good 😋
@@MaxandSidney thanks for the tips, we will be in Athens in about 6 weeks time. We will give your recommendations a try😃
Το ξέσκισε το τζατζίκι μιλάμε!

Please stop calling them kebobs. It's souvlaki.
