  • Athens was our first stop in Greek and it certainly did not disappoint! After spending several days visiting all the ancient site and exploring the city we decided it was time to turn our attention to the delicious Greek Food. Food tours are such a fun way to learn about the culture and foods of the countries we visit. Greece may also have the best food we have tried yet. We were big fans of all the different cheeses and dishes we tried throughout the day.

I lived in Greece in the early 90s. My late husband and I loved it .We were there for 2yrs. The food was authentic and awesome. The people are the nicest you could ever meet. I have so many fond memories of Greece.
In my next life I want to be Greek.

Athens has a lot of bakeries and BYZANTION (pronounced Vizándion) is one worth visiting for its quality, artisanal products as you saw. The second bakery you visited is in fact a chain (Apollónion) and that sign with the words is not its name but the products it sells: Bread, Sweets, Croissant, Coffee.

The "koulouri", is baked, dry circular bread with sesame. It is consumed with cheese/olives as a snack or accompanies coffee/tea instead of cookies. The one in the video is rubbish, not Greek, with a lot of calories. Greek yogurt MUST be made of sheep/goat milk (as feta cheese). When cooled, there is a skin formed on top. All other milks may produce yogurts but not GREEK YOGURT. In Greece one should ASK for original Greek yogurt else one eats a cow milk product.

The Culinary Letdown: A Californian Quest for Gourmet in Greece:
When our food-obsessed group, proudly wearing our Californian foodie badges, decided to embark on a culinary journey to Athens, our spirits were as high as the ancient Acropolis. The land that gifted the world democracy surely had a plethora of flavors awaiting us. Instead, we were met with a flavor plateau that left us yearning for more.
The perpetual offering of souvlakis with unapologetically stale bread became a predictable fixture of our Athenian dining experience. The red and green bell peppers dolmas, while vibrant on the plate, echoed a monotonous tone on our palates. We couldn't help but wonder: Where was the fresh baked bread warm from the hearth? Or the comforting embrace of a hot soup or the gentle warmth of a well-brewed tea? Aspects that should have been staples in such a storied land.
Ironically, back in the Golden State, our local Whole Foods flaunts an olive bar that is reminiscent of a mini Mediterranean festival. Yet, in Athens, supermarkets seemed to treat olives with casual indifference, limiting their variety and essence.
Having explored more than 80 establishments across mainland Greece and its islands, our enthusiasm began to wane. We found ourselves booking a hasty weekend retreat to the gastronomic haven of Antalya, Turkey. And what a relief that was! Turkey, with its rich culinary canvas, proved to be a stark contrast. The food was not just food - it was art, it was a story, it was, dare we say, seductive

I ate the food in turkey & it gave me food poisoning. Worst cuisine ever with cheap meats & no seafood culture. No pasta culture. No coffee culture. They can’t even eat pork there! 🤣
🦃 has no Seafood Culture, no Pasta Culture, no Coffee Culture. No Pork like Ham, Pepperoni, Bacon, Panseta, Gyro, Souvlaki, Cold Cuts, Pork Chops, Loins, Ribs. Nor Gamey Meats (Rabbit etc) & technically aren’t even allowed to eat Shellfish! 👍🏻

😅 We have since learned this appears to be a borderline offensive comparison. We usually get Fage Greek Yogurt. How does that rank amongst Greek Yogurts?

@@jordanandsoph it's legit from Greece, but made for the US market
Lo fat which is not a concept in Greece
Also it's made with cows milk only
Greeks make sheep's milk and or Cow/ goat combinations
Fage 5% is the best one they sell
It's got a luxurious mouth feel , but you should try to find a Greek specialty store where you live and they will have the real deal
Also the cheese used for saganaki is called kefalotiri which is a sheep's milk cheese
