Awesome! I am loving this series Jerad! Thank you, excellent info, my sharpening has already improved and I’ve been able to fix a couple I screwed up on.
Thats amazing, doing a bad job on sharpening isnt always a bad thing its a step closer to great edges, no one starts off sharpening good
@@NeevesKnives true that. A great reasons for these videos. Thanks!
Jared, you're talking of things that almost nobody else is talking about out there. At least in channels that are not specific of sharpening. And even then you can keep up with publishing so many videos! Incredible!
What I would do is to put a 17° angle in both sides and then create a micro-bevel at 22°. From there I would always sharpen at 22° until the 17° angle disappeared.
Anyways I do a similar thing when a knife is a bit thicker behind the edge. I sharpen with a more acute angle and then do a micro-bevel at a wider angle.
It's true that I generally use a SPYDERCO SHARPMAKER to sharpen, and doing this by freehand sharpening might not be as easy.
Thats amazing, im actually about to do a video on that subject, micro bevels and was going to talk about that excact thing
Another video that proves I’m right ! Thanks man
There ya go 👍
Every knife I've ever bought came with a uneven edge no matter what company and how much I paid. Except for one man, and that was TJ Schwartz. Every knife I've bought from him came with a perfect edge bevel on both sides like he sat down and hand done every one of them, which I'm pretty sure he does.
Excellent explanation and alot of good tips to fix it
Brand new Buck 120 in D2 just got here the other day. I have a wide bevel on one side, especially at the tip, and a 20-degree bevel on the other side. I can't believe it made it through quality control. It's readily obvious that someone got a little heavy-handed in the sharpening dept. The edge is centered but the point is off a bit. I'm worried about matching the wide bevel on the 20-degree side due to the fact that it might make the steel too thin and brittle. IDK yet. I'm considering just living with it and letting it work itself out over time.
I’m about to take an angle grinder and mess my whole knife up I swear. It was almost perfect and then I realized I had mirror polished all but a tiny bit because the angle is off on one side. I need to remove so much material (I took your advice and got the diamond lansky as well as the stones. So helpful) but this knife was abused and it’s gonna try my patience.
Thank you for this video!
👊
Very neat !
Thanks for explaining how to see and correct this issue. I think these are great videos. You would hope that it wouldn't leave the factory that bad but I know it does.
Yeah all the time, even the expensive knives do, also sometimes we do it ourselves by accident
This was a terrific video. I have the issue where the bevel/grind is off and that made my sharpening edge larger on one side. I am going to try and fix it with you ur method of sharping the shirt side. If that doesn't work I will bust out my new 1x30 and re-bevel it. I am no expert quite the opposite, this video gives me hope. Thank you for knowledge!
This video helped me out so much. Awesome job! Thank you so much. I couldn't figure out what was going on with my knife until after watching this video.
👊
Great informative video. In my experience with knives with a uneven bevel I don’t even sharpen it out the first time. It my take me 2,3 or even 4 to get it where I want it. Same with chips as long as it’s not really effecting the sharpness or cutting. It might just be me but I want to save as much of the knife as I can when I sharpen.
Yeah i also do that but depending, if im already sharpening and realize im making a mistake then i will address it as much as possible but i also try not to remove steel i do t have to, great comment
BANG !! sound advice.
I know it happens perhaps too often, but I hate when the grind is not correctly done. I hate finding after sharpening correctly, that some parts of the bevel are thicker than others. But it's true that these knives are perfectly usable, also.
Yes for sure and you dont always have to do everything in one sharpening, theres nothing wrong with taking a couple edges to do something to avoid losing steel that you didnt need to lose
@NeevesKnives I have uneven bevel on my Bugout. When I finish my smaller side do i do the same on the bigger side but less strokes or I don't touch the bigger side at all? But I have to remove the burr. The difference is big in mine and i want to do it during 3 or 4 sharpenings and use the knife between.
Need help I did this on my Hinderer.
What happens to me when I have to come down from a higher angle to meet a lower angled side is the higher angle side ends up having a wider bevel than the original low angle side. Because I take away metal from the higher angle side at the top of the bevel so I don’t take metal away from the edge. It always annoys me with two different sized bevels. Am I doing something wrong thanks.
only slightly, its only going to get bigger with the grind getting thicker, so its not usually noticable unless you remove a lot of steel. so usually it wont change much at all however you can doit until the other side matches, make sure you fatigue the burr every so often so it snaps off when ready
@@NeevesKnives okay thanks will try that out
Thank u so much! This is the only video i could find that made sense to me. And i been making this bevel worse just driving me insane. I had a 17* on one side and around a 22* on the other from spyderco. It was razor sharp but after honing with a ceramic rod for a few years i just cant get it sharp enough to my expectations. You solved my problem opened up my mind with your drawing and great explanation. Ive used markers and everything. Drove me nuts. Feel like an idiot now but i just learned a big lesson. Thanks again.❤
Damn I messed up my pocket knife I can’t fix it what do i do
Just take it to a knife store they will get you right. That's what I did. They know shit like this happens all the time and it can be a bitch to correct it.
I used the benchmade sharpening service twice and my knives came back with horribly uneven bevels... bothers me every time I use them
Yeah I personally wouldn't either
I don't care how good you are in free hand sharpening nobody can establish the exact angle on both sides of their knives or even from heel to tip. So why even worry about it. And it really has no effect on the cutting functionality of the knife.
With my worksharp professional precision adjust I can get both sides to have exact same angles idk what you mean bud. I'm sure if you got out some fancy device and measured they would be off 0.25% or something silly like that. It does matter that they are even , it makes it so much easier to sharpen / touch up when they are symmetrical angles
Just convex it :D
🤔
I will admit I am not good at sharpening at all free hand and I missed up a blade on my buck stockman
Yeah it takes practice like everything
There will be some asymmetrical bevels getting destroyed from here...
? The point is they are not a symmetrical its how to help even them out
@@NeevesKnivesi really like what you do, lets that be said, please take it with a grain of salt, i said it because there are knives that need to be sharpened asymmetrical because they where build that way, thats not the case in the knives you showed ofc and appears more in terms of kitchen knives. But if you woud "even out" those secondarys you woud be either not center or have a longer bevel again but on the wrong side what woud lead into increased shearing forces in cause of the shape of the primary grind itself.
Sorry for my bad expression in english, if you do not understand what i tryed to say please fire away :)
best regards Cedric
@@sedorriku8021 yeah i get that, i can only put so much info into each video and i try to explain certain circumstances most times, but as you probably know theres so much information that it can be difficult at times
@@NeevesKnives yeah totally agree. Just wanted to mention it, i saw it as important hope you didnt took ot personal. Woud love to talk with you about sharpening once!
HOW TO this how to that blaw blaw blaw, It's all BS, How to do it all right is just to send it to Jerad.
😆 ya got that right
