Honestly, capping the whole thing with Vegas Vacation was peak National Lampoon and Chevy Chase. I hate that it's my favorite of them all because it was a little different, but it hit every hilarious note for me.
Christmas Vacation is one of my favourite Christmas movies!! I always watch it with my dad and we always end up laughing before the joke or gag even happens because we have seen it so many times
"National Lampoon" was a comedy magazine created by some Harvard graduates (sorry, I don't know if it was late 60's or very early 70's). It was known for humor which went way past the line, its content was considered "adult", it contained a lot of social and political satire, and kids were not necessarily allowed to read it (I snuck-read it as a kid). At some point, the brand went into movies. The movies were intentionally filled with innuendo, the same spirit, and were hilarious (imho).🧢😊
For some reason I still have a National Lampoon comedy cassette tape (definitely late '70s or early '80s, I don't have it on hand). It was my dad's and probably came with a cassette tape carrier or something as a promo item. When I was a little kid I played it once, just to see what was on it. If I remember correctly it was full of skits in the form of radio commercials, and some were pretty bawdy.
All of the Vacation movies are hilarious. The child actors change throughout, but Clark and Ellen stay the same. We watch Christmas Vacation every holiday!!
The car that Christie Brinkley (a super model back in the day) was driving is a 1983 Ferrari GTS, the same car that Tom Selleck drove in the TV show Magnum P.I that was popular in the day.
Leo, I have a elderly family member who’s close to passing away. All my close friends have passed away, and almost all my family. I literally have no one to talk to. This is ripping me apart. I’m only telling you this because you help soo much! I just want you to know how much I truly appreciate you🙏🏼 you’re holding me together. Love you brother🙏🏼
“National lampoon” is a brand. It’s a brand mostly known for comedy magazines in the 80s. Then they started making movies so they put the brand name in the beginning of the movie titles.
Thank you A G You saved me a big post 🙂 Along with the magazine, there was a N.L radio hour in the mid 70's many of the group went on to star in a late-night T.V show called Saturday Night Live (Bill Murray, John Belushi, Harold Ramis) (kids these days missed out on so much... am I right) Well, I guess I posted after all !

Another Lampoon's Vacation movie came out in 1985 after this one. National Lampoon's European Vacation; it's ok, but this one and X-Mas Vacation are better imo ruclips.net/video/vbF_7TiG5bg/видео.html
Only iffy one is European vacation, but i think i need to try it again. Haven't seen that one in 20 years. Vegas was surprisingly good. Order of good to bad is Christmas, Original, Vegas, European.
I was 16 when this came out and cannot tell you how much I LOVED this movie; I even wished we had a station wagon like that one with the ridiculous tail lights 😂❤️. 1983 was one of the best years of my life.
Sooo glad you're back man! Hey if you do end up watching another vacation movie, I'd suggest just going all out and watching European Vacation next then it was Christmas Vacation, Vegas Vacation and if you want to count it, Vacation from 2015 which is actually another sequel and not a prequel. Much love!
"Roll em up" and "F yo momma" instantly became go-to phrases among my friends after seeing this movie. And Christie Brinkley is driving a gorgeous red Ferrari, not a Lambo.
I live in Colorado and it is beautiful! If you ever make your way to CO, ill smoke up with you and show you around! love that your back! Haha great video also!
Yeah, Beverly De'Angelo is a terrific singer. She voiced Lurleen on the Colonel Homer episode of The Simpsons back in the day. The one where he manages a country singer that has the hots for him. A really cute episode if you've never seen it.
Aunt Edna is played Imagene Coca who cohosted "Your Show of Shows" which was the SNL of it's time in the 50s. Wally is played by Eddie Bracken, the Seinfeld of his time until he rejected a bad deal by his agency and was blackedballed by the industry. The movie was directed by Harold Ramis, Egon from Ghostbusters.
Ellen: “I honestly don't think we're going to find the Grand Canyon on this road.” Clark: “Jesus, it's only the biggest God-damn hole in the world.” Aunt Edna: “Clark, watch your language!” Clark: “Make that the second biggest” The Christmas one is a cult classic. Somehow Eddie ( his least favorite person always shows up to ruin his life, with new kids with new problems.. lol I highly recommend! 🤣🤣
National Lampoon was an adult humor magazine, it was so popular that it spawned this first movie and went on to making 3 sequels. Christmas Vacation is easily the best of the bunch as well one of the best Christmas movies ever, so i hope that's on your list because missing out would be a crime.
This is such a classic. Christmas Vacation is my Xmas Eve tradition, going on 20+ years of watching that every Xmas Eve. Save it for Xmas time but mark your calendar to watch it. It’s an all time great comedy which will have you dying of laughter.
The mom Beverly Deangelo was Rick James’ girlfriend in the late 70’s. Also, glad you caught “Honky Lips”. It’s one of the funniest things in the movie to me.

One of my all time favorites Leo! Please continue with the sequels. Welcome back Leo! Keep the heat coming!!
I’ve got 5 brothers and 2 sisters and we used to travel by station wagon on the 80’s, this movie was one of our favorites growing up, haven’t seen it in years but man it catches all the aspects of station wagon travels in the 80’s! And man Christie Brinkley in the Ferrari is still a classic hot blonde! Now a single dad of 3 amazing daughters I hope they look back on past and future trips we have the same way I do with my family.
I LOVE this movie! As a child of the 70's & 80's, I spent many a road trip in the back of our van. Not a mini-van either. A full sized van with a bed in the back. My family visited many of the tourist places shown in pictures. Tons of great memories and now I have my own family truckster.
YESSS FINALLY!!! 😁😁 Next you need to watch European Vacation, Christmas Vacation and Vegas Vacation. Same parents in all but different kids and they're all equally as hilarious! So glad you're back Leo ❤️ BTW the Ferrari girl is supermodel Christie Brinkley 😁
Then after Vegas Vacation, there's Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure. Then there's a short film called Hotel Hell Vacation that can be seen free on RUclips. Then the newest one just called Vacation. All great and entertaining films. I even liked the Cousin Eddie one for the most part.
Growing up (as a kid) this was my favourite movie. Riotously funny. “Hey, Underpants, move you chicken wings” . 😂😂. Clarke’s meltdown is also classic. 🙂 National Lampoon made loads of great comedies. Probably their best two are this movie, and National Lampoons “Animal House”. Check out Animal House next Leo, it’s hilarious too. ✌️
The guy that rents out the tents eating 🍉 , was in many comedies . " Caddyshack , Christmas Vacation , 17 Again , Groundhog Day etc " just to name a few of many .
By the way, welcome back, man. I’m sure you’re happy to be free and in the comfort of your own home again. We missed you and it’s good to see you again. Glad you’re back. I hope you’re doing well and enjoying each day, one day at a time.
National Lampoon was an American humor magazine that ran from 1970 to 1998. The magazine started out as a spinoff from the Harvard Lampoon. National Lampoon magazine reached its height of popularity and critical acclaim during the 1970s, when it had a far-reaching effect on American humor and comedy. The magazine spawned films, radio, live theatre, various sound recordings, and print products including books.
It was a satirical comedy magazine that boasted such future stars as John Belushi and Douglas Kenney (one of the original writers on Saturday Night Live). Not only did they do movies, but their satirical 1963 yearbook from a typical but fictional high school is absolutely hilarious.
National Lampoon is not a place, it's a society. It started as the Harvard Lampoon, but branched out & became its own seperate entity. They published a magazine, a radio show, & eventually films. I don't know if they've done a tv show or not.
Man my whole family loved this movie. We went to see it and we had it on DVD.. the first time I ever heard . daddy says I'm the best at it.....We were on the floor.... classic
She’s my favorite model of all time! She was married to Billy Joel for a while in the 80s.I was just a wee lad of 13 when I saw this. The next Chevy Chase movie you need to see is called modern problems.
Chevy Chase was always willing to do anything for a laugh ! He was an original SNL cast member. I think you'd also like Christmas Vacation . Also want to suggest a movie called The Jerk with comdian Steve Martin, another SNL cast member :) :)
National Lampoon was a humor magazine from the 70s through 80s. Animal House, along with the Vacation movies, was a branching out from their prior days of doing comedy albums (featuring many SNL alumni from the 70s, including John Belushi).
We went on a 3-week driving trip out West when I was a kid back in the late 60's. Mom and Dad bought a new station wagon, loaded it up, and off we went. Early in the trip, we got lost in St. Louis and wound up in East St. Louis, in the hood, trying to find a way back on the Interstate. We had the windows rolled up, the doors locked, and Dad would NOT stop to ask for directions while Mom was giving him what for. Every time I see that scene in this movie I just die laughing.
National Lampoon was a company that made humor magazines and movies. Their other movies include the rest of the Vacation series, Animal House, and Van Wilder.
Don't know how many times I've seen this movie but I never noticed, till watching your reaction, that the off screen police officer who asks Roy Wally if he wants him to take the family "downtown and book 'em?" is non other than the late, great Harold Ramis.
4:16 Look carefully at how they are 'washing' the dishes: Ellen's scraping the leftover food into the trash, handing them to Clark, who then dries them and puts them away. They never actually get washed.
The scene at the beginning in the kitchen doing the dishes. Ellen is scraping the food off and Clark is just wiping with a towel and putting in cabinets....
I really needed to watch something tonight that would make me happy and you always have the perfect timing for me when I'm down, you make me smile. I love you, thanks for this!!❤
The next one in the series, National Lampoon's European Vacation is pretty great. That movie made me feel like I went to Europe with them and when it was over it's like I was glad to be back home in America and made me appreciate America more.
LOVED this movie as a kid. If you like this, you should watch the Lampoons Christmas vacation movie too!

My favorite magazine cover had a picture of a dog with a gun to its head with the caption. "Buy this magazine or we'll shoot this dog."
