    The video is very informative and useful to carry out similar DIY job. Don't we need to cover insulation you installed under the ceiling?

    Hi Mitre team. Thank you. This is great information as all the other videos. I really enjoy watching doing it myself through your informative videos and as you have been doing it up to or better than standards. I hope people here in the Philippines do things based on standards too. I wonder if you have the video to when you created or installed the joist? Also is the pink chemical for anti-wood borers or anti-termite? Thank you in advance!

      Hey Donnie, in NZ pink timber framing is referred to as “treated”. From what i understand it protects again rot and borer/termites etc (borer being nz equivalent to termite)

    I love you videos. One question. I have this same step up in my two storey house and have been turning the downstairs into a flat, now I like being able to see the joist creates the effect the ceiling is higher. But if I do this and don’t want to put dry wall across the joist what do you suggest as a ceiling between the joists, if that makes sense

      @mitre10nz  4 года назад

      Totally understand, You can still install insulation in-between the joists, but maybe go with a Polystyrene style insulation that way its just the minimum amount of space it will take up. you will then need to fix small batons to the sides of the joists to to fix the drywall or ply ceiling to. Good luck and yep I agree that the exposed rafter is a good look.

      There are peddlapods under some NZ houses, they burrow under the soil.
      If you fall into one of there nests its game over.

    Hi, what is the difference when you don’t staple the insulation up against the flooring and let it sit lower on your i beams leaving a gap between the flooring and insulation?

    • @mitre10nz
      @mitre10nz  4 года назад +2

      Hi Luke, if you don't staple, this means the insulation isn't able to work as effectively. Cold and damp from under your home won't be blocked from entering through the floor - the insulation acts as a barrier to keep your home warm and dry 😊 ^James

      @@mitre10nz thanks James. So even though it's only around a 50mm gap between the floor and the insulation it wont be as effective if its stapled up tight against the flooring...

    why cant u staple up on top of floor and only on the sides

      So it doesn't squash the insulation and make it less efficient

    2 inches of filter floss? Real men use 6 inches of sound deadening rockwool for floor joists.

    33% loss through the floor ??? check your info. its only about 12-14% for the floor. a ceiling is around 33%.
    also that method in the video doesn't insulate the joists so you still have heat loss through that. blanket insulating across the joist has far better performance. much more insulating for your dollar.

    • @benjifrater6077
      @benjifrater6077 5 лет назад

      True but unless you are ripping up the flooring (which most of us won't) then that is not really practical

    • @tweake885
      @tweake885 5 лет назад

      @@benjifrater6077 ???? the blanket insulation goes on the bottom of the joists not the top. you can't nail flooring down with insulation between the the floor and joist, that won't work.

    • @GustavoAndresHerrera

      @@tweake885 If I recall correctly, the standard doesn't allow you to leave empty space between the flooring and the insulation.

    Nope. The crawl space under my house between the dirt and the joists is about 500mm. And the spiders and cobwebs, uggggghhh.
