  • Kiwis love the outdoors and a deck is a popular addition to many homes. Even better you can build one yourself.
However, it’s a bigger DIY job, and it’s really important that your deck is designed properly and adheres to the building code.
This guide will take you through the process step by step, so you can get the job done right with Mitre 10 and design a deck that’ll last for years.

Hey Chad, you can read the full guide as there are too many variables to answer that questions: www.mitre10.co.nz/guides-and-advice/guide/how-to-design-a-deck - Cheers

Hey Chad, there are instructions for if you’re building close to the ground, in the PDF. Please read this guide so you can get this right for your deck specs 😊 Cheers, ^James

Any suggestions for building over existing concrete that's sloping away from the house? 3m x 6m. I have brick cladding and height will be as low as legally allowed (by the house) but the land drops 600mm to the farthest point from the house.

Heya, there are quite a few variables for this one. I suggest you talk to a local LBP builder to get some advice on how to tackle the project 👍

When do you plan on updating your website to include the guide mentioned in the video? Currently there is only the guide on how to build a deck. Also it might be handy to include a link to it in this videos description when it is available. Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback. You can find a copy of the guide here: www.mitre10.co.nz/guides-and-advice/guide/how-to-design-a-deck. There is also a link in the description and in the video itself. Cheers 👍

Good instruction! just not quite understand, in this example, when u decide the maxium space between posts, u didn't choose the bear2, which has the max loaded dimension 2.09m, can u please tell me the reason?

There is a disconnect between the instructions and the plan. In the plan the piles are at 1.3m centres, not 1.65m that the instructions use for loaded dim calculations. With 1.3m pile centres (along the bearer line) the 140x90 bearers can have a loaded dim of 3.0 Probably used someone else to collate this document, and they really need to watch a newbie try and follow their instructions and then realise its not right, and then fix it up.

They start out talking maximum distance so you dont have to dig so many holes, calculate using 1.65, but in the end actually used the smallest.
