James Spader is the only reason to even watch this movie. He steals every scene he is in. Gorgeous and brilliant. It's hard to believe he is basically the complete opposite of the character he plays. He has completely gaslit all of us throughout his entire career and I love it.1
The crazy thing is steff is the character that I was most interested in. He actually really doesn't care about money & he had a crush on andi so ironically if she gave him a chance he would not care what anyone thinks about him dating her. He likes her bc she us different from all the snobby rich air head bimbos. All the venom he spews to his friend Blaine who gets the girl is obviously out of pure jealousy. He uses her being poor as an angle to peer pressure Blaine out of being with her. Steff is very perceptive for a high school senior & even goes to " what would your parents thing " as he knows they would freak. So Blaine dumping her at one point bc of peer pressure actually makes him weaker than steff bc steff says he liked her for 4 years & did not care if anyone said a thing about it including his Rich parents. Even when molly turned him down again & insulted him pretty good he never went to an insult back about her being poor or trash he just calls her a bitch which has no bearing on ur economic status. He did not care about money but knew Blaine worried about it. He seems embarrassed by andi in front of his freinds. The movies ending was blaine never goes back to her. So ironically he is more of a coward than steff. Steff obviously sees none of those things he said in jealousy about Andi bc he asked her out for 4 years !
You nailed it. I was 16 when this movie came out. He always wanted Andi because she was unique , not bimbos like the rest, but she turned him down throughout high school. That's why calling her "bitch" instead of " poor trash" transparently meant he was upset with her rejection. He himself thought she was special. It was jealousy when his best friend got her, so he tried to sabatoge it like a king manipulator. James Spader just layered this character perfectly. Our favorite 80's bad-boy.

Blaine was a wussy & he finally goes for andi when its prom & school is over. The original ending as I assume everyone knows is that andi did not end up w/ blaine & test audiences hated that. So andrew looks awful in the re shot version bc he lost a ton of weight & shaved his head for a play so they put him in an awful wig. Spader was my favorite character bc he didnt care about money & said to blaine " u think I'd treat my parents house like this of I cared about money " & I don't know if andi rejected him over & over bc she thought he would hit & quit it but I highly doubt it if he went after her for 4 years & was so jealous that she liked blaine that he played him like a violin. It would have been so interesting to see steff w/ andi bc I'd love to see his non giving a $hit attitude to his friends & parents. So if u think about it steff is the best character in the film as he is the only one who doesnt bend to peer pressure & liked Andi & didnt give a damn what anyone said. Spader steals this film
