A little tip is to peel the tape when the paint is not fully dried. Itll leave a more crisp line and you risk peeling the paint when you take the tape off when its fully dried

I have a '84' XLH that I did things to like new fenders and split tank then I painted. Swaped wheels to spoke. Had the barrels borded to 20 over. Replaced everything in the motor including barrings except the cams. Those are the only thing thats te same. I've got new generator-regulator, starter, LED headlight and sidelights. Its like a new bike but didn't cost thousands but still it only has a 4 speed. It's funny I keep going for that fifth gear when I ride with my friends LOL. My goal was to make it not look like a sporter and I think I did just that. Don't care what anybody says the sportsters are a good bike.

never had a problem with. It is a freaking fun bike to ride, good wt/hp ratio.

Mason, you seem like a nice guy so I want to pass on a little tip. I remain anonymous on here, but I have a small well respected Dyna performance shop. You can change the look of the front end for the better by redrilling the fender mounting bolts. It gets rid of the dirt bike look and when you see the difference, it's worth the effort. I have a dozen bikes done this way with probably a hundred thousand miles combined, so yes it holds up.
And yes on the COMMANDER II tires, my " shop " Dyna has over 160 pounds feet of torque at the wheel, and the MICHELIN is the only tire for me. All the very best, SARGE.

Apparently black is in. I punched up this video thinking it was to address functional issues with a 29 year old bike. Instead it was all about not liking chrome and making it black. I am an older rider about to inherit a 95 xl1200 Sportster, stock, with lots of chrome, which I really prefer. I find the conversion to black a bit sacrilege. The bike, stock, represents the taste of the riders of the time. Me!

And the horn doesn't look old school, looks like the horn on every sportster from 91-03. And the motor isn't a wet sump, it hs an oil bag to hold the oil. If it wet sumps, you got an issue....

Reading some of these replies and it's clear this video doesn't resonate with everyone. Shame on you for not blowing a years salary on a 26 year old sporty and not painting it dog shwang red. No, for real, this is quality content. Many people who are in the target demographic for a $2-3k Sportster ain't looking to soak another chunk of change in having the parts sent to a shop, powder coated and painted the right way, to say nothing of having the bike tore down for however long that takes. No, there are many possible reasons to be on the market for a '94ish Xl, but I don't think one of them is to do a $xxxx refinishing project. May I ask about how much you spent for the parts of the project you showed in this video aside from tires.and oil change? I ask because I think the money spent on getting up to date on things like overdue wear items (tires, brakes, cables, fluids, etc} would likely be spent by someone buying a bike similar to this one even if they didn't want to make it look brand new like yours. Also, do you know the make and model of that exhaust? That pipe is dope.

Jason Graham thanks for the kind words I really appreciate it! Everyone has their own opinion on how things should be done but most of them don’t own a motorcycle shop or have to make profit when they fix up an old bike... also this is RUclips so most of the people that leave negative comments don’t even have a motorcycle and still live in there moms basement lol I don’t have an exact parts list but you can find most parts for Harleys for very reasonable prices on eBay and even Amazon. The tires were definitely the most expensive thing, with paint and paint supplies being next. Thanks for tuning in and I might have to build another sportster real soon because it seems to piss off the chrome dude who “live to ride and ride to live” 🤣😂🤣😂 oh yeah and that exhaust system is a Harley Davidson screaming eagle 2 into 1, which is one of my favorite exhausts for a sportster because it’s not too loud but better sounding on stock and the engine seems to breath a lot better. 🤙🏻
