When Amber said she doesn’t like broken bones I just kept thinking she’s about to completely freak out when that infamous scene happens. I hope she covers her eyes!
Richard Farnsworth (the sheriff) was one of THE greatest stunt men in westerns for 40 plus years, almost never getting a speaking role and, suddenly (irony) gets speaking roles in his late 60's and 70's! Result?: Two Academy award nominations among others! Try the Grey Fox when you can! Also, a wonderful gentleman and an incredible horseman! Most likely, if you've watched western movies, you've seen him! Also in (briefly) Clint Eastwood's "Outlaw Josie Wales" (ok, another "hint"!🤣)
I had an older friend who was a movie stuntman & also directed stunts in many movies & TV shows. His name was John Gill from Red River, New Mexico. The last movie he managed stunts for was The Lone Ranger back in the late 70s or early 80s. He was also in some of that movie's group screen shots.
Oh man, that one season of AHS, she was just awful and terrifying. But I love her so much and instantly trust her again immediately every time she comes on the screen, how is she so good?! Lol
I got to see this at the movies when it was released. I was 19. The scene where he finally starts to fight back, the audience just burst into applause and started hooting. They went crazy. It was like everyone had been holding their breath for the first 90 minutes, when he hit her with that typewriter everyone exhaled. LOL!
The same thing happened at the theater I saw it in. I was 19, too. I had never seen a crowd go nuts at the movies. The place erupted in screams and cheers.
How many times you think people are cheering on a woman getting the crap beat out of her. LOL! Feel this is a rare scenario where we can celebrate that. LOL.
Comment reminds me when I was viewing Prince's performance in his film Under the Cherry Moon. Prince's acting was so awful, the audience cheered when he died in that film.
Caan makes a brief (but hilarious) appearance in a very strange 1991 film called "The Dark Backward", starring Judd Nelson, Bill Paxton, Wayne Newton, Rob Lowe & Lara Flynn Boyle. It was written & directed by Adam Rifkin.
Yeah he gets overlooked by Kathy Bates in this film, rightfully so because she was fantastic but Caan did a great job also, pretending he was hurt almost all of the role.
It was said that Jimmy Caan could never sit still, so Rob Reiner had a terrible time directing him in this movie, trying to keep him in bed and still for so long.
And she also cuts his left thumb off, the only finger you don't use typing, and puts it like a candle on a birthday cake she makes for him. A little more gory in the book lol
This movie still gets the job done without the extraneous gore lol Honestly seeing/hearing a depiction of a man’s ankles getting broken is more visceral and real-feeling than reading about a severed thumb or severed feet in words 😅
Yes, they really toned things down in the movie. I think they were already pushing some uncommon boundaries by have a setting that was very slow paced with only 2 characters for the majority of the movie. Even though the premise and plot of the movie stayed mostly true to the book, there was a lot trimmed. Today, this could have easily been made into a limited series. Movies over 2 hours back then were frowned upon, but today folks are happy to spend a weekend binge watching TV at home.
Y'all should totally check out Dolores Claiborne, it's the other Stephen King/Kathy Bates collaboration that's more of a great mystery then horror. It has another stellar Bates performance (her personal favorite of her career) as the angriest woman in a small town who's accused of murder and the only one who thinks she's innocent is her estranged daughter who has to prove her innocence.
The daughter is played by the incomparable Jennifer Jason Leigh, who's been in way more movies than most people realize & has also done a lot of television. Her filmography includes such eclectic titles as "Fast Times At Ridgemont High", "The Hitcher", "The Hudsucker Proxy", "Backdraft", "Anomalisa", "eXistenZ", "Easy Money", "The Hateful Eight", "Miami Blues", "Single White Female", "Palindromes", "Short Cuts" & "Synecdoche, New York".
In the book, she chops Paul's foot off with an axe, then use a propane torch to cauterize the wound so that he wouldn't bleed out. When it came time to adapt Misery for the screen, the decision was made to have the Misery hobbling scene instead of amputating his foot due to two factors. One of the reasons for the Misery movie differences was that there was concern over the level of gore if they staged King's original scene. Second, Rob Reiner wanted Paul to emerge victorious at the end of the film, and felt that Paul losing his foot was too harsh a penalty for him to have to deal with going forward. The change worked well though, creating an iconic movie scene, and one that's still plenty brutal in its own right.
As someone who'd read the book before the movie came out, though, that scene was disappointing. I actually turned to the fiend I went to the movie with and said something about it...😋
so did paul die in the book? lol sorry you just have mne intrested & one out of the two factors you say Stephen wanted him to emerge victorious" Im in assuming the movie? lolz
That's James Caan. One movie that Jay should check out with James Caan is "Brian's Song", the true story of professional football player Brian Piccolo. He's best known for his part in The Godfather.
Came here to say the same. “Brian’s Song” is a classic football movie, true story, and co-stars Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) as Gale Sayers. Great movie.
It was a trip to watch this at the movie theater. Everyone was yelling at the screen and covering their eyes. There was a collective "OHH!" when she broke his ankles. Great movie and masterful performances from James Caan and Kathy Bates.
Kathy Bates was so amazing in “Fried Green Tomatoes”! I adore that movie. Hope you guys react to it sometime! ❤☺️ She was also very good in Delores Claiborne 😊
Fried Green Tomatoes is one of her best roles IMO only because it's shows how versatile she is. I know so many people that relate to her story in that movie, and they'd spot a less than stellar actress in that role quick.
@@UtopiaBlue68 exactly! I also feel bad for other actors that they have so far only seen once, eg Tony Goldwyn who played the dispicable bad guy in 'Ghost' but who also was a great 'Nixon' and even voiced 'Tarzan' in the 1999 Disney movie. I like when actors get seen in total opposites, true actors can take you so far into characters and worlds that you forget the actor and just see the character! Anyway yes Kathy Bates (and others!) redemption time soon! Another vote for Fried Green Tomatoes!
I think they should save something like that for Halloween week/month. A lot of last year's "scary" selections were pretty tame like Edward Scissorhands
Kathy Bates won the Academy Award for Best Actress. It was a well deserved win considering these types of performances rarely win the Oscar. Rob Reiner ("Stand By Me", "When Harry Met Sally", "The Princess Bride") was the Director and the screenplay was by Academy Award winner William Goldman ("All the President's Men", "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid", "The Princess Bride").
I wasn't really familiar with Kathy Bates, but when I walked out of the theater after seeing this, I said, " That woman deserves an Oscar for that performance".
The way you both looked at each other when she says, "there look what you made me do," solidified you guys as being the cutest couple of movie reviewers on youtube. Subscribed!
Kathy Bates rightly gets a lot of praise for her performance here, but I think that James Caan deserves a lot of credit, too. He very ably played a man struggling in multiple ways and his reactions to what's happening are incredible. Like at the end when a well-meaning fan says the one thing guaranteed to most dredge up that horrible experience and look at his face, he's desperately trying to be polite and gracious while, at the same time, struggling not to vomit. Also, I love that at the end, most reactors relax when they see the actual waitress and not Annie, then go "augh don't say that" when she tells Paul she's his #1 fan, but you just say "kill her".
As an hyperactive guy, this role was very tough for him. As much he enjoyed the recognition following the release of the movie, he hated shooting the scenes in bed days after days. More so, Kathy coming from theater, she was used to repeat a scene many, many times, where James was a classic movie actor, with few rehersal. But bottom line he and Kathy found compromises and finally had fun together. They are one of the best duo ever
Both were brilliant but I also thought Richard Farnsworth and Frances Sternhagen gave amazing performances. Although for me, Frances will always be Ma Clavin
@@Dr.Acula76 Same! As someone who grew up on "Cheers," I also see Cliffy's mom whenever I see Frances Sternhagen in anything. Either that or Bunny MacDougal from "Sex and the City." I had an ex-gf who used to watch the entire run of SatC once a year, so those characters got burned into my brain as well.
I saw this in the theater years ago with a college buddy, and my then girlfriend (now wife). This movie did the book justice. If you two ever get the chance, you MUST read the book. It truly paints a vivid picture of just how disturbed Annie Wilkes was, and you really experience what Paul Sheldon experienced... pure "misery".
Kathy Bates won the academy award for her performance in this movie. She was also excellent in Fried Green Tomatoes, I think you would really enjoy it!
So glad y'all loved this! Bit of trivia for ya, at the end of the movie, his editor, the beautiful lady is Lauren Bacall! Huge star from a young age, she was married to Humphrey Bogart! Big Hollywood couple! Bogie was known for his big film Casablanca! Lauren was n a fantastic movie with Barbara Streisand and Jeff Bridges, called The Mirror has two faces! U both will love em!
VC Andrews was a woman, and she only fully wrote 7 of the novels under her name. A couple were unfinished, and the family hired a ghost writer to finish those, and to continue to publish other novels under her name.
Actor James Caan was excited to play this part cause he was generally type cast as a tough/intimidating guy. Playing someone who was vulnerable in an overwhelming situation was even different for audience viewers to see Caan play. I think he and Kathy Bates had great chemistry. Robert De Niro was originally offered the role of Paul Sheldon before Caan.
...knowing about the "hobbling" scene, I took my headphones off, as both of you did too...I was laughing, crying and cringing all at once...brutal cinematic history in that scene...
James Caan was also Sonny Corleone in The Godfather. He has 135 screen credits. One of my favorites was with Alan Arkin in Freebie and the Bean. Which is one of the first buddy cop movies ever made. His son is Scott Caan. He was one of the Mormon brothers in Ocean's 11.
I never realized that was him in the godfather! 🤯 I also enjoy Alan Arkin and have never heard of the movie you mentioned. Definitely going to check it out. Thanks for your post. 💜 btw, you should check out The Kominsky Method if you haven't seen it.
@scapito6536 Yes to the Kominsky method!! Alan Arkin is one of my favorite actors. If you like Alan Arkin, you shouldn't miss The In Laws. It's a hilarious comedy with Arkin and Peter Falk. Also, Catch 22, The Russians are Coming, He usually plays a role with a bit of humor. But he made a scary villain in Wait until Dark. He starred in lots of movies in the 70s. But since then, he seems to play smaller roles. See him in Grosse Pointe Blank, Sunshine Cleaning and Little Miss Sunshine.
@@nikolatesla5553 Thank you! 🤗 I'm scheduling an Alan Arkin movie weekend for myself solely based on your recommendations. I've enjoyed everything I've seen, mostly post 1980s. His delivery is the best and he just draws me in emotionally.
Freebie and the Bean, I haven't thought about that movie for almost fifty years. I saw the movie at the Bel-Air Drive-In on eight mile rd. in Detroit when I was fifteen. I've never seen it since and had forgotten about it until your comment. It is a good movie. Thanks for bringing back that memory.
“ One flew over the cuckoo’s nest “is a movie I would love for y’all to watch . I’m not sure if y’all watched that one yet but it’s awesome. Thanks for sharing your 🎥 🎞 amazing reactions. 🎉
I watched Misery inside a packed multiplex theater a day after it opened. When the hobbling scene happened, the entirety of the audience all collectively GASPED and YELLED. It was such a great moment. By the end off the movie, we were all exhausted in the best way. I hope you add and react to "Dolores Claiborne"(1995) It's the second time Bates stars in a Stephen King movie. It's very different in tone and story compared to Misery. But, it's so GOOD! "Eclipse at 5"💀🍸🌘
If you guys enjoyed this, you should absolutely check out Dolores Claiborne. Another King adaptation, and he custom-wrote the part for Kathy Bates after he saw her in Misery.
Yes! Dolores Claiborne is such an underrated film. I always preferred it over Misery. Kathy Bates even said herself that Dolores Claiborne is her favorite role she’s ever played.
In the book, instead of hobbling him, she cut off his right foot with I believe an ax. And she cauterized it with a blow torch. She also cut off a thumb, I can’t remember which one. She stuck it in the middle of a birthday cake 41:13 as though it were a candle.
Fun facts: The movie was shot chronologically to build up the tension between Kathy Bates and James Caan. Obviously it worked very well. In her Oscar acceptance speech Kathy apologized to him "for the ancles". The director Rob Reiner has a cameo as the helicopter pilot.
This was my introduction to Stephen King. I was a kid when I saw this on TV, and I didn’t even know about his books yet. What a great way to discover his work.
James Caan was in many movies and shows including Brian’s Song, The Godfather, The Eraser, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, Hawaii 5-0. His son is Scott Caan who’s famous for the movie Varsity Blues, Ocean’s 11, 12 and 13, Enemy of the State and the shows Hawaii 5-0, and recently Alert: Missing. James passed away last year.
There are several interesting facts about this book and what Stephen King has said about it 1. The book was inspired by King's experience with obsessive fans. He once met a fan who told him she was his biggest fan, and he began to wonder what would happen if that obsession turned violent. 2. The book was published in 1987 and was nominated for a number of awards, including the World Fantasy Award and the Bram Stoker Award. It won the latter award. 3. The book was adapted into a movie in 1990, starring Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes and James Caan as Paul Sheldon. Bates won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role. 4. King has said that "Misery" is one of his favorite books that he's written. He has also said that he relates more to Paul Sheldon, the author who is held captive by Annie Wilkes, than any other character he's written. 5. The book includes a scene where Annie Wilkes hobbles Paul Sheldon, and it has become one of the most memorable and chilling scenes in horror literature. King has said that he was surprised by the reaction to this scene, as he didn't think it was particularly gruesome compared to other scenes in his books.
>3. The book was adapted into a movie in 1990, starring Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes and James Caan as Paul Sheldon. Bates won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role. I think you made that one up
@@CurlieGrl that was one of the most horrifying scenes in the book, the movie scene is bad...the mental imagery from the book will be forever seared into your brain. Read that book when it first came out and ive never forgotten that part
Kathy Bates got an Oscar for performance. The agent was played by Laruen Bacall a great actress. She made her film debut in 1944 at the age of 19 opposite Humphrey Bogart he was 44 , and a year later they married. The movie was "To Have and to Have Not" a great classic. She was a hot actress and things sizzled in this one.
A lot of people don’t realize it, but Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile are also Steven King Stories. I think you’ve done some of those as well. Love you guys! Wish you could show more movie while you’re talking sometimes though. Maybe just not cut away all the time. I’ve usually seen them before, but would be nice to see some of my favorite parts. I know YT has rules about that too. 😁
@@laustcawz2089 Spoiler… I didn’t really notice many similarities beyond them both being about a prison break 🤷🏼♀️ I recently saw an interesting show about the real escape from Alcatraz and how they think it was actually done. It was so simple. They think they used an extension cord as a rope to tie themselves to the back of the ferry and basically hitched a ride. They also talked to the family of the two brothers who escaped. They sent Christmas cards to their mother from Mexico. It was really cool! 😁
I used to hear about girls reading VC Andrews in high school but i never read them until i worked for WVU for a few years and I had down time when the students and faculty were in class and I went to the department library where i worked and found a VC Andrews section and decided to read one and was SHOCKED that so many middle and high school girls read them. They were definitely sick...and i read Danielle Steel and Nora Roberts!
I used to like them as a angsty teen lol, but now, just, no. And ALL the novels and series of vc andrews the young girl always ended up in a incestious relationship, was yanked from her parents and had a evil grandparent with dark secrets ie incest in the closet. Of course v.c. andrews died kinda young and her family has a ghostwriter who basically copies that format. Loved the flowers in the attic 80s movie tho
Kathy Bates was also in another Stephen King adaptation, Dolores Claiborne. But I think her performances in Misery and Fried Green Tomatoes are my favorite.
This is the movie that made Kathy Bates a household name. She was relatively unknown before this, and only had smaller roles in the 70’s and 80’s. Fans of the Big Bang Theory also know her as Amy’s mother.
Yes, Kathy Bates became a star with this movie but you guys have to also get into the great James Caan. You MUST react to The Godfather. Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro and so many more. There are 3 parts to this movie and it's a must watch kids.
Love the reaction to the hobbling... I think everyone that has ever watched this movie has that reaction even on repeated watchings when you know it's coming!!!
The actor’s performances are brilliant in this one. It’s just James and Kathy most of the time and very subtle background music. They bring every emotion out so well.
He also plays the role of Brian Piccalo. Not sure how to spell his last name but anyway in the movie Brians song about him and gale sayers when they played for the Chicago Bears. Very sad movie, and true story.
I love how she slowly reveals her true nature, and you can see Paul go from being grateful to her, to being a little puzzled, to thinking "Ohhhhhh shit… what have I gotten myself into here?" And then he has to play along, and you can see that Paul's acting is just good enough to fool Annie, while you can still see in his eyes that he's scared and angry. And that scene where he says "Annie, whatever you're thinking of doing, please don't do it." Just incredible. Things got even gorier in the book. But that makes Paul's eventual defeat of Annie that much sweeter. And that's all I have to say about that.
Kathy Bates was an unknown actress when this movie came out. I saw it in the theater. When the credits rolled, everyone in the audience wanted to know "who played that creepy, crazy woman?" and there was a collective laugh from the audience when they saw that the last name of the actress was "Bates" . . . everyone immediately thought of "Norman Bates" from the movie Psycho. Everyone was saying "Bates, Bates, her last name is Bates" . . . everyone was thinking "Norman Bates" and laughing. Anyway . . . she wasn't unknown anymore after this movie ANNNDDD, she won the Oscar for Best Actress for playing this creepy, crazy woman, and I was thrilled for her. You know if people stick around to read the credits to see specifically who played the part . . . you know that means you made a big impression and that you were that damn good in the role.
I love this movie, even with the deviations from the book. I love a scary story, and nothing is more scary to me than what one human can do to another. Ghosts and aliens can't come close to that, because it's never quite as real.
Watching movies with you guys is always priceless. I think you'd like Fatal Attraction with Michael Douglas and Glen Close. It's also a bit of a thriller.
Kathy Bates!!! Undisputed one of the GREATEST of many generations!! NOBODY could have done what she did for this role. So much love for this unbelievable character!
I nearly fainted at the movies when Annie "hobbled" Paul. The tension in this movie gave me anxiety. I was sweating and nervous the whole movie! Great writing and acting. So good!
I'm glad to see you guys growing into the different genres of movies. I would love to see you guys tackle the 1973 classic "The Exorcist", director's cut.
@STakers-ni9jg I don't know if they'd be able to handle some of it, especially the scenes of the religious symbols being used and vandalized in such disturbing ways. The scene with Regan and the crucifix... 😮 It's a lot. When it was released, I knew it was horror movie that I didn't want to see and wasn't allowed to see until I was older, and I watched it for the first time at around age 16. It was the edited version and I was curious about why it had been banned in so many places because I didn't think it was much worse than The Omen or Rosemary's Baby when it came to horror with religion, though I believe those were banned in some locations. 🤔 I think it was in 2009, that I finally saw the uncut version. I was disgusted by what they did to and with the symbols, especially Regan's scene with the crucifix. 🤢 I then understood why it was banned. I'd like for them to watch more horror movies, but hearing them talk about their faith and religious beliefs, I think it might be too strong for them. I don't want them to be afraid to trust our suggestions because of something that may be very upsetting to them. If they watch either version, I can already hear Jordan saying he's going to have to watch a happy movie and sleep with the lights on. 😃
@@LMmccallL57 Regans crucifix scene was in the original..the only scene added in the 2000 directors cut was the spiderwalk. As much as I love this movie I wouldn't recommend it to these folks ever.
I saw this in the theatre with friends and our reaction to the hobbling scene was the same. 33 years hasn't diminished that gut punch you feel watching it
I took my headphones off, too, and I had to look away when she hobbled him. I covered my ears and closed my eyes the one other time I have seen this movie. I read the book first, and could hardly stand to read the hobbling part. Except in the book version, she cut off his foot and used some kind of fire thing to cauterize it, if I remember correctly. Kathy Bates is one scary villain.
I'm was so excited to rewatch this film with you. It's a great one, and yes, Kathy Bates in this was absolutely iconic. James Caan was an amazing actor as well.
Fun fact: there were a ton of other actors who were considered for this role before James Caan was cast, but most of the other actors didn’t wanna say in bed that long
OMG, you are watching Misery? This should be fun. Hey guys! If you have a list of Halloween Movies for next fall, please add "Silver Bullet" which is based on a Stephen King novella. Enjoy!💞

Heck yes you guys!!!!! So happy you two are reacting to this. Kathy Bates is completely terrifying in this movie. The sledgehammer scene is one of the more disturbing scenes in cinema. Stephen King really knows how to pull at people's emotions.

They were my favorites of hers. I also grew up loving Stephen King. IT was my favorite since the miniseries that came out right around this time.
James Caan. "Elf", The Godfather", Honeymoon in Vegas" and millions of other movies. (Someone already mentioned "Brian's Song", you should check that out.) Did you react to "Stand By Me"?, that was directed by the same guy who directed this. (Rob Reiner), that was based on a Stephen King Novella called "The Body". A very good Kathy Bates movie is "Fried Green Tomatoes". So funny, and heartwarming (and a little bit weird)
You've seen a few other movies directed by Rob Reiner. He did Stand By Me (also a Stephen King adaptation), The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally. He was on fire in the 80s and early 90s.
I replied to someone else's comment about this, but if you want to see more of Kathy Bates, I highly recommend that you watch "Fried Green Tomatoes." In it, Kathy plays a character who (a) is much more sympathetic than Annie Wilkes, and (b) grows and evolves as time goes on. Kathy won the Oscar for "Misery," and well deserved because she does a great job with challenging material ... but, in my opinion, "Fried Green Tomatoes" is her greatest performance. It's a tearjerker, though, so keep the Kleenex handy.
I dressed up like Annie Wilkes, complete with a VERY realistic foam sledgehammer, for Halloween one year at my hospital. People either had no idea who I was supposed to be, or they had a visceral reaction while saying, "I'm your number one fan." It was great. According to King, the reason why Annie runs so hot and cold is because Annie Wilkes is an allegory of his drug addiction. It held him hostage, made him write, made him unable to write, cut him off from people, made him believe that he needed it, and then made him totally dependent on it at the exclusion of all others. Trying to get away from his addiction made it sink its teeth in harder and cripple him physically and emotionally. It seemed so nice and helpful in the beginning but turned into a nightmare in the end.
They have. I remember because when they did Lost Boys I was laughing because they didn't realize they had already seen a movie with both Corey Feldman and Keifer Sutherland together
This is one of my favorite SK books and adaptations of any book. I truly enjoyed watching this reaction. Every time y’all said that Paul was fortunate for being found, treated and the realization that he wasn’t made me smile. One scene that I live is when Annie calls out Paul for “correcting “ her regarding the name of the short movies she loved. “ I know that Mr Man!!” Wow. Y’all took off your headphones and turned away I still cringe when I see that scene. I’ve seen this movie many times.
Was waiting for the reaction for the hobbling scene and you two did not disappoint!!! Both of you taking the headsets off so as not to hear the CRUNCH!
James Caan is a fantastic actor, this movie gives me the creeps! Another excellent Caan movie is a sports movie I've recommended...Brian's Song where he plays Gale Sayers backfield running mate Brian Piccolo in Brian's story
You guys are BRAVE! I happened upon this movie late one night at home, and I could never again! What she does to that poor guy is just so over the top!

If you would like to see Kathy s incredible acting range, check her out in the brilliant , heartwarming FRIED GREEN TOMATOES ......its one of my all time favorite films...Kathy plays a meek mild mannered housewife....can you believe it?? James Caan has been in a ton of films, you guys would probably like HONEYMOON IN VEGAS If you would like to see Kathy playing and and even more evil person check her out on the third season of American Horror Story---Coven........her character Delphine Lalaurie will send chills down your spine.
You also gotta give James Caan huge props for pulling of being terrified and in danger but acting like he loves and cares about her. The tension and fear hidden beneath that he manage to shine through is phenomenal and it wouldn't have worked at well without it and kathy wouldn't have shined so bright. He was perfect for the role.

Everytime you said “ he’s so lucky”, “ he got lucky” I had to just smile thinking “ boy you’re gonna change your opinion really quick on that one”!!
It was DEFINITELY mean for him to have hit her with the typewriter
James Caan did an amazing job for this role, and he still one of the greatest actors, RIP James Caan!
Caan makes a brief (but hilarious)
appearance in a very strange 1991 film
called "The Dark Backward",
starring Judd Nelson, Bill Paxton,
Wayne Newton, Rob Lowe
& Lara Flynn Boyle.
It was written & directed
by Adam Rifkin.
@@AmIDeadYet Her role was a lot bigger really. Several actors turned down Caan's role.
He even brought a touch of class to films like Elf.
Kathy Bates won the 1991 Oscar for Best Actress for Misery. Loved your reactions, have not seen it in years, got chills all over again!
In the book she doesn’t use a sledge hammer. She uses an axe and cuts his feet off and then cauterizes the stumps with a torch.
And she also cuts his left thumb off, the only finger you don't use typing, and puts it like a candle on a birthday cake she makes for him. A little more gory in the book lol
This movie still gets the job done without the extraneous gore lol
Honestly seeing/hearing a depiction of a man’s ankles getting broken is more visceral and real-feeling than reading about a severed thumb or severed feet in words 😅
Eww
Y'all should totally check out Dolores Claiborne, it's the other Stephen King/Kathy Bates collaboration that's more of a great mystery then horror.
It has another stellar Bates performance (her personal favorite of her career) as the angriest woman in a small town who's accused of murder and the only one who thinks she's innocent is her estranged daughter who has to prove her innocence.
The daughter is played by
the incomparable Jennifer Jason Leigh,
who's been in way more movies
than most people realize
& has also done a lot of television.
Her filmography includes such
eclectic titles as "Fast Times
At Ridgemont High", "The Hitcher",
"The Hudsucker Proxy", "Backdraft",
"Anomalisa", "eXistenZ", "Easy Money",
"The Hateful Eight", "Miami Blues",
"Single White Female", "Palindromes",
"Short Cuts" & "Synecdoche, New York".
This is one of Kathy Bates best movies! Another one is Fried Green Tomatoes, which you guys should DEFINITELY watch!!
People often forget that and Titanic
Yes. And what a totally different character! She's some actress!
I actually turned to the fiend I went to the movie with and said something about it...😋
Wow.
Firstly, they shoulda known what they were taking on with a Stephen King novel.
Secondly, the hobbling was pretty horrific anyway.
@@alanmackie7012 Extremely. How she explains it before she does it is horrible too.
so did paul die in the book? lol sorry you just have mne intrested & one out of the two factors you say Stephen wanted him to emerge victorious" Im in assuming the movie?
"Brian's Song" is a great movie. But if I remember correctly, bring your tissues.
Apparently a lot of actors turned down the role, because their physical movements (and therefore nonverbal expression) would be significantly limited.
Such a great movie
It was a trip to watch this at the movie theater. Everyone was yelling at the screen and covering their eyes. There was a collective "OHH!" when she broke his ankles. Great movie and masterful performances from James Caan and Kathy Bates.
Kathy Bates was so amazing in “Fried Green Tomatoes”! I adore that movie. Hope you guys react to it sometime! ❤☺️
She was also very good in Delores Claiborne 😊
I completely agree "Fried Green Tomatoes" is a fantastic story and after watching this I think its time for a bit of Kathy Bates redemption .. Lolz
Fried Green Tomatoes is one of her best roles IMO only because it's shows how versatile she is. I know so many people that relate to her story in that movie, and they'd spot a less than stellar actress in that role quick.
That's my mom's favorite movie, I've seen it SO many times. My absolute favorite line of hers is "Sorry girls, I'm older and I have more insurance!"

Your last name is Montoya, and you didn't even mention that Reiner and Goldman worked together on "The Princess Bride." For shame.
I wasn't really familiar with Kathy Bates, but when I walked out of the theater after seeing this, I said, " That woman deserves an Oscar for that performance".

@Randy marsh actually it was Robert Duvall who briefly played Boo Radley
@Randy marsh Boo Radley was played by Robert Duvall. If you want to see a young James Can I recommend El Dorado starting John Wayne.

He made so many bad decisions after The Godfather, it was like a second chance at a decent acting career.
...knowing about the "hobbling" scene, I took my headphones off, as both of you did too...I was laughing, crying and cringing all at once...brutal cinematic history in that scene...

But, it's so GOOD! "Eclipse at 5"💀🍸🌘
If you guys enjoyed this, you should absolutely check out Dolores Claiborne. Another King adaptation, and he custom-wrote the part for Kathy Bates after he saw her in Misery.

Kathy Bates did a hell of a job acting in this one. She totally creeper me out😱
James Caan was in many movies and shows including Brian’s Song, The Godfather, The Eraser, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, Hawaii 5-0. His son is Scott Caan who’s famous for the movie Varsity Blues, Ocean’s 11, 12 and 13, Enemy of the State and the shows Hawaii 5-0, and recently Alert: Missing. James passed away last year.
There are several interesting facts about this book and what Stephen King has said about it

"Zodiac" will freak out as well. Very intense and a true story to boot. Excellent movie.
The actor’s performances are brilliant in this one. It’s just James and Kathy most of the time and very subtle background music. They bring every emotion out so well.
Its truly set up like a play would be, i dont kno if it has been adapted but it would work well in that medium.

I don't know if they'd be able to handle some of it, especially the scenes of the religious symbols being used and vandalized in such disturbing ways.
I think it was in 2009, that I finally saw the uncut version.

“I like scary stuff but not like broken bones”…..oh poor sweet Amber.
The TV show Annie was watching is " Love connection". It's an old dating show. My grandma loved that show lol
Another of the few Stephen King adapted movies that follows the book for the most part. James Caan, and Kathy Bates play their Roles so Well.
Kathy Bates also was the unsinkable Molly Brown in TITANC (1997) Where actually played a nice woman.
This is from the first SK book I ever read. A great adaptation by Rob Reiner. Make sure to also check out Stand By Me if you haven’t already.
They have. I remember because when they did Lost Boys I was laughing because they didn't realize they had already seen a movie with both Corey Feldman and Keifer Sutherland together
You two bring such great vibes to your videos. You both looked so hyped to get into this one 😂. Great to see you’re getting into the thriller genre!
“ I know that Mr Man!!”
Wow. Y’all took off your headphones and turned away I still cringe when I see that scene. I’ve seen this movie many times.
Funny when Jay wakes Amber around the 30:17 min mark just as she drifted off!
"How lucky is he." As I hold in my chuckles cause I know what we're in for. Lol
The sheriff is Richard Farnsworth who played Red in the movie The Natural staring Robert Redford, a must reaction.
It's fun watching y'all see this classic Stephen King adaptation! And, the sheriff's sassy wife is a totally underrated character in my opinion. 😅 ❤
Frances Sternhagen is a wonderful actress and has been excellent in every role she played.
You guys are BRAVE! I happened upon this movie late one night at home, and I could never again! What she does to that poor guy is just so over the top!
I love that you guys noticed how few other actors there were in this film. Shows you how important good acting and good writing is.
Don’t forget The Godfather
Tawanda!!!!!!! LOL!
