Review: 2023 Volvo S60 Recharge - 41 EV Miles + 455 HP!

  • I spend a week with the refreshed 2023 Volvo S60 Recharge. While the looks haven't changed inside or out, the mechanicals of this plug-in hybrid have gotten some big changes that result in some very impressive improvements in performance and electric range, now doing 41 miles of electric driving and finally having enough power to actually use the EV mode in most situations. Add in the pretty low price (relatively speaking) and the ability to now get the full $7,500 tax credit, and you have possibly the most compelling car that Volvo has made in a while. What do you think about the 2023 S60 Recharge? Thanks to Volvo for providing this vehicle to review.

      @@lions208436 to tell you the truth, I don't remember, it's out of my price range. I was just doing it for fun, sometimes. I like building cars that I can't actually afford lol

    Man Volvo really is hitting their stride with this model. I’ve heard a few Volvo V8s with modified exhausts and they’re pretty surprising!

    My dad had an S80. Very reliable. Volvos are so safe! Great review!

    Unfortunately all the luxury stuff like ventilation and massage was a 2019 and 2020 only. Very rare. V60’s with T6 and the lounge package are even rarer

    I got to drive an older S60 T8 one time and I loved it. I loved how the sport mode was called "Polestar Engineered." I don't think a used one is that expensive but I don't know how reliable it is.

    This is a timeless design by Volvo; I'm glad they are improving on it! Now to work on the infotainment and add padel shifters!

    When I had my 21 V60 Polestar Engineered (the older T8 powertrain) I regularly got about 44mpg with it with a full charge driving normally. Charge depleted was about 30mpg and trying really really hard to drive all electric I managed 77.1mpg (that was REALLY hard with 25miles of range lol).
    And as a side note, I noticed this powertrain does not give you the full power and will short shift if the engine is not warmed up. There are no indications about that or even a gauge to check, but after driving about 20k miles, that's 100% a thing. I got into a habit of forcing the car into gas mode when I'd start off in the morning, but drive relaxed enough out of the neighborhood that it was only idling the engine. There was no shifting, just using the electric motor in the rear. Then by the time I got to merging onto the highway, I had full power and the engine was warmed up. (They always say racing a cold engine is a bad idea, and its fully possible to do that with this powertain).
    Another note on Volvo efficiency! I currently have a 22 S60 B5 and if I use the coasting function in Eco mode, I have managed almost 46mpg a few times!

      Thanks for sharing your ownership experiences, that efficiency is impressive! Yeah you're right about that first acceleration being conservative because I probably hadn't used the engine enough, the second one definitely felt a lot better.

      @@MattMaranMotoring Yep, it's definitely a thing. As an owner of this car for almost a year now, I can confirm the first time you "gas it" the engine will only give you about 60% of it's power. You can tell it's doing it in Hybrid mode by the gas icon going to the middle of power indicator; once it's done warming up it'll stay back up at about 60% power.
      For anyone who is reading this and wants a trick, depending on drive mode there's a cheat code you can do on the drive selector. If you're in B, left, down down. If you're in D mode, down, left, down. What this does is shift the car into manual gear selection, which kicks the engine on to start it's warmup process, then shifts back to your drive mode. Pretty handy if you want to prep yourself for "spirited driving" without having to go into the menu or pressing on the accelerator pedal too hard.

    I know the battery is under there but good lord that is a small storage compartment under the arm rest. Great video!

      I like to tell people the car has a surprising amount of storage. The look on their faces when the surprise is how little it has is hilarious.

    I hear the road to much they should have throw some acoustic glass to avoid road noise and also I hear the tires hitting the road what’s up with that ? Is this a carpet ride or bumpy ride ? I wonder if it will be possible to add air suspensions after market though

    There’s a secret to getting good mileage on a trip (it’s a secret, because no one reads the owners manual :^) If a trip or round trip exceeds battery range, and if it’s plotted in navigation, the battery is apportioned over the entire trip, where advantageous. A 175 mile round trip I make regularly, yields ~55 miles per gallon.

      Yeah I know. Compared to other cars around this range this car really is a steal, but even then just 5 years ago this car would have been 10k cheaper even before the EV rebate.

    I am not sure why a hard working man driving an older used car grand children should be paying for the purchase of a new plug in but it seems to be a good one if you and someone else grand children can afford it. thanks

    on the center console it looks like there's a way to prop your phone up near it with it closed. i could be completely off but i think i see it. a la dodge ram. let us know! lol.

      @@MattMaranMotoring It's there, there's even a cutout that lets you have the cable plugged in while it's propped up.
      But it doesn't fit fat phones like the Samsung Fold series, but does fit anything up to the Samsung S## Ultra line.

      Ah I see what you mean now. To me it didn't seem big enough for most phones or very deep so I never even realized that's what it could be used for. @hyperbandit have you used it for your phone? Does it actually hold it well? I feel like that placement would also get in the way of my elbow. But good to see there's another potential solution for phone placement at least.

      @@MattMaranMotoringYes I have this exact same car... white, black edition, Bowers.. 41 miles of range. Only difference is I have the 2022.5 version with the last version of Sensus infotainment vs the google based system. Yes I can prop my iphone 13 in that little cutout. And I ordered an 8" USB cable off Amazon so I don't have to wrap up an extra long cable when connected in that tiny storage space. Works really well.

    Dude I waited whole video to hear charging time and what type of charging Volvo is using, disappointed

      My apologies for not including that info. It takes 8 hours to charge on a 110v and 5 hours on a Level 2. I did show the port at least, which shows that it won't DC fast charge, only regular CCS.

      my 2023 has 11000 miles, never used level two, always 110 V, ~15 hours if down to zero.

      @@colbyjk But you can put it into Power/Polestar mode and activate the gear selector to still choose gears, where paddles definitely would come in useful.

    You get way too excited for hybrids that get piss poor mileage. This compact is embarrassed by everything from an Elantra to the grand highlander.

      Mine has 11,000 miles since November 1, 2022. 104 miles per gallon lifetime, ~$35/mo to charge at 17¢ per kWh. My last four-cylinder BMW got 29.7 driven the same way.
