Was really hoping "But you still take the damage!" was going to show up. That line would come up so much in later Yugioh series, especially Arc-V. However, I can't think of too many cards that actually exist that would prevent a monster from being destroyed by battle or card effect but also wouldn't prevent battle or effect damage.
Well, the new Illusion type is effectively the "But you still take the damage" group of monsters, but they have come out nearly a decade after the final episode of that series.
Still remember Gage's emotions when he played Cimoooo with Kalut he looked so happy when he attacking his Blackwings but when Cimooo says Damage Step Gage's happy face turned into a frown and says "Please don't have Kalut" or when Cimo attacking and says Damage Step Double Kalut for game

Another thing about the Weevil beatdown is that it got huge in Japan due to the fad of Niconico Douga Medleys which would include a variety of musical tracks that were popular on the platform mixed together and usually accompanied by their original video sources, or sometimes even turned into entirely new songs that just happened to use the medley as a basis. "Fang of Critias", the track that plays during the scene, was one of the more common tracks to hear in these medleys and the scene was used as its accompaniment. And fun fact: Bait Doll is the only way for someone to activate their opponent's Trap card.

Worst thing is that I have no clue how THIS noob became a pro. He was regional champion or something with the worst deck I have ever seen. In Duelist Kingdom he had exactly ONE play, that needed 5!!! turns. Winning Insect Queen in Battle City made Joey's deck WORSE 😂😂😂
@@christopherb501 Technically by the cards wording Weevil could claim a victory by DQ, due to Téa's interference, as Berserker Soul (at least at the time of the episode's release and irl) said you were to carry on even if your opponent's LP hit 0 so Atem was duty bound to keep going, granted the rules irl have since changed but back then you had to keep going so by Téa interfering she stopped an action that had to happen and thus Weevil could technically claim a DQ win.
I feel like the scene where kaiser throws half of his cards from his deck when using power wall should definitely be a meme to show how people nowadays will simply dump half of their deck into the graveyard to win
That isn't a meme. That was one very specific thing that happened in the anime, and then the game came to a point where that's almost the standard of playing the game. It didn't come from that scene, it was the natural progression of the game. And people don't LITERALLY dump half of their deck like the scene did. You're completely wrong and had to be corrected.
@gasai yuno most memes from yu gi oh are a sket that happened from a scene in the anime or a meme from particular references to cards or people And of course, you can say people don't usually dump half of their decks into the graveyard, but it's all to poke fun at cards and characters that's all it really is.
Here's an idea: How about ascended memes? Meaning memes that have actually been acknowledged by official Yu-Gi-Oh products, such as Mirror Force being godly in VRAINS or Duel Links having one of Tristan's Skills be "Super Strength" or there actually being a Blue-Eyes Dragon Jet card.
You could also get a fair amount from the voice actors themselves, like Yusei's actor saying Card Games on Motorcycles, or Pegasus' voice actor clowning on Snatch Steal being unbanned
Another really memorable phrase from the anime is when one player activates a card that makes their monster undistructible by battle "-My monster can't be destroyed by battle -But you still take damage" And the occasional reverse
Honorable mention, as currently it is one of the trendy YGO memes, is "surprise/jumpscare white woman", which is an opponent endboard with a lot of monsters + I:P masquerena, during your turn, after you summon bunch of monster, they activate I:P to link for Underworld Goddess, which has a special optional requirement to summon with one of the opponents monster
Okay this is only BARELY tangentially related to YGO, but Ojama Lime being included and Rata being mentioned, I have to remind the world that Rata was actually the one behind the whole Morbius meme. One silly YGOtuber managed to make a joke that spawned an entire cultural meme that is sorta still ongoing to this day
Back in 2014/15 my local Yugioh community had a facebook page where people traded and sold cards. One day a new member tried to sell his common Mirror Force Trap Cards for an obscenely high cost. At the time Mirror Force was still played, but was no longer a staple and had received multiple reprints so the going price was only a few cents. Other people on the facebook page tried to tell him he wouldn't be able to sell the cards for so much but instead of taking their advice he argued with them, trying to convince them of how powerful the card was. What made it extra funny is that every time he mentioned the card, he referred to it by the full phrase "Mirror Force Trap Card." This became something of a local meme to the point that if anyone activated the card or spoke about it, they all called it "Mirror Force Trap Card."
As a Weather Painter player my group has the meme "This WP went for milk" is used when I activate a WP effect in response to target removal, since it banishes for cost. Also against the solfachord player we have "Normal Cutia, tale as old as time" just a variation in Normal summon aleister since Solfas can't pend summon Cutia.
I think it's less that YGO-players don't read, and more like Kaiba says in YGOTAS, that the rules are so complex that nobody can figure out how to actually PLAY Duel Monsters.

Back when I was a kid during Yugioh's early days, I loved the cards and game, BUT because I was (and still a) legally blind, I would need my mom to read me the cards. She even spent tie helping with an Excel document to write down all the descriptions for hte ones I had. Thankfully I use an electric magnifier now could you imagine her trying that for Endymion or Nirvana?
“White woman jumpscare” referring to Underworld Goddess is a good one. Similar to a kaiju, but it’s gained some popularity in Master Duel because you get the jump scare of her summon animation when she comes out.

I feel like The Ishizu Tearlaments deck should be a meme within itself, because of the amount of chain links you could pull off. I think the meme came off, because of malino's frustration and PTSD that he had when facing Ishizu Tearlaments so much, that he moved over to playing pokemon, before one of his friends said that all the shuffler and the tearlaments to one.

Another reason why Berserker Soul is so memorable is because it's one of the more notable cases of the original Duel Monsters run of the anime actually emulating the real card game fairly accurately. Not in the way the specific cards work - as established in the video, Berserker Soul doesn't work this way in the real game - but on a conceptual level, setting up a BS OTK combo through a combination of various card interactions (Breaker dropping down to "1500" ATK by using its own effect earlier in the duel) and a bit of luck. It's a -believable- interaction for people who actually play the game. The one other scene that comes close in my mind is the Slifer Revival Jam scene.
Regarding Berserker Soul in the real game, it's my understanding it did actually used to work like it did in the anime in that you just kept drawing cards after the opponent's already dead, based on its wording. It was a ruling change that made it so the game immediately ended after dealing the final amount of LP damage necessary.
One meme I absolutely love is "The Heart of The Cards" though Yu Gi Oh was my first card game and my favorite I do still play a lot of other card games with friends. So I love always being able to make a "Hear of The Cards" joke whenever possible
I actually used berserker soul as a card in Super Heavy Samurai. People will sidedeck any Spell Negation out their deck in game 2 because they know as SHS you dont use spells or traps. Making Berserker Soul an excellent side deck option for game 2 :P
More suggestions: The whole World Legacy archetype is somewhat of a meme because "LORE". Sky Striker was somewhat of a short-lived meme since so many had Raye as their waifu, but then it was revealed in some manga that she was supposed to be 13 or something, so people had an existential crisis. The Traptrix archetype is also a meme by itself because of featuring little girls who lure people into traps to have them devoured.

The whole meme with Mirror Force and Battle Traps in specific got a lot more funny due to later anime scenarios as well Shark in Zexal was set up to "cheat" when he accidentally saw the one of the cards his opponents deck contained, which was a Mirror Force Then Revolver in VRains was set out to have a "powerful card", and during one of the first duels Revolver participated in on screen, upon facing a bunch of monsters with almost nothing on the field, he goes into this absolutely fabulous dance and tell his opponent to "Fall into the bottomless abyss of despair" while activating Mirror Force, he then proceeded to use a ton of battle traps throughout VRains. Then in duel links, one of Revolvers skill would be to add one of the trap cards instead of drawing at the start of the turn, called "Might of Hanoi" Effectively making a lot of players in OCG referring to all Battletraps and some other trap cards as "Might of Hanoi"
The funny thing is, old school Yugioh players complain that cards like Endymion are too complicated, have too much text and that cards in old Yugioh were better. Yet Endymion’s effects are quite simple and are clearly explained on the card while an old card like Last Turn literally has a 14 page document dedicated to explaining how it works.
Not to mention that old card text was often quite vague and at times confusingly written, even for simple effects. Not to mention how the old Polymerization basically told you _nothing_ about how fusion works and you had to look up the rulebook to know what that card even _did._
Evenly and Mirror Force are why I have trust issues. I played Branded a couple months back and my opponent had a set card, I had game on board but no way to destroy or negate the effect, I didn’t have opening in my grave either. So instead of attacking I just passed, growing up I’ve been hit with so many mirror force I guess it’s just my knee jerk reaction when I see a face down. Long story short it was Jar of Avarice. Still won on the next turn but yeah.
In addition to the universal "you just activated my trap card", there are smaller, more core-player memes regarding trap cards, like "purple card" and "monke flip"

It's funny how Roger Slifer worked as an associate screenwriter for Transformers 1986 and co-created Lobo the Bounty Hunter for DC Comics yet his name is forever memorialized as a God card. Another fun intersection of Transformers and Yu-Gi-Oh is the band Psychic Lover who did the OP for one of the Unicron Trilogy shows and Yu-Gi-Oh GX
Mirror Force has become a meme for another reason too, which is the Vrains anime. Basically, the anime built up the mysterious, powerful card in Revolver's possession supposed to make the opponent shake in fear, which was revealed to be... Mirror Force. Which got a mixed reaction for being at the same time a well-loved trap card that functioned well and had some anti-link synergy, and an underwhelming reveal. Speaking of the anime, another big meme from there is "but you still take the damage". This was a stock phrase for the anime from the beginning, as it was gleefully reminded to duelist who found a way to prevent monsters from destruction but not stop the attack, but became really infamous with Arc V, who abused it to no end. It became so bad that Vrains had Lightning subvert it entirely, continuously sacrificing resources to avoid taking damage. The usage of the phrase has gone down a bit after that, but it's still there.
There's a good chance that even someone who isn't familiar with Yugioh will have heard of the meme, because of how ingrained into pop culture it is. One of Zer0's lines in The Borderlands is even "How hilarious, you just set off my trap card"
A meme the Japanese community has about the printed version of Ra is calling him "Wo, the Dragon Who Does a Lot" (coming from the resemblance of the katakana ra and wo ラ/ヲ and giving it an air of a ripoff just barely skirting by trademark laws while still obviously trying to trick people like those bootleg dollar store DVDs, and changing "yokushinryuu" to "yoku shinu ryuu") They also call him "Life Schlorping Giganto" (ライフちゅっちゅギガント)
Now, LittleKuriboh didn't change up anything with Obelisk because he couldn't find anything funny with the name, but he had a joke where whenever it would strike down with the Fist of Fate, an audio clip of Joey and Tristan saying "TORMENT!" from the episode "My Cards Will Go On" is played.
A friend in my friend group used to play Endymion, and we just nicknamed mighty master as "the bible" My personal addition to the damage step trauma is using TA.I. Strike against my friends. That card is stupidly good at getting rid of towers monsters
Me when Secrets of Eternity was released in January 2015. This set introduced the Infernoids, a series of monsters that can Special Summon themselves to the field by banishing other Infernoids from either the hand or graveyard. Notable cards in set include Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Qliphort Monolith, Uni-Zombie, Nephe Shaddoll Fusion, and a card that would bolster Satellarknight to combat the Burning Abyss Shaddoll meta, Stellarknight Constellar Diamond. In this series, both Nyhmnim and myself will be opening 24 booster packs or 1 box of a core Yu-Gi-Oh! booster set. We will build a deck and play a best 2 out of 3, and the winner will receive a small prize to upgrade their deck. HOWEVER! Each episode, we will open another box of the next set that was released moving in chronological order, constantly upgrading our decks before dueling each other at the end of each episode. This is the Yu-Gi-Oh! Progression Series.
One of them if only Niche that I like is Cowboy for game. Basically because whenever you're at 800LP or less and you see gagaga cowboy most would say cowboy for game. It also extended to other burn cards that can will basically take away the rest of their life points in a fell swoop.
I feel like at this point the Egyptian Gods should just have their missing manga/anime protection attached to their attribute. Only they have Divine-Beast as a type after all, and Konami isn’t exactly against changing things up in the rule book. Give it a few restriction on attribute cards and it could easily make up for the missing power without a bunch of text.

I feel like with Endymion and Nirvana High Paladin they wouldn't be so bad if Yugioh cards weren't smaller than other card games. Magic cards are only a little bigger but even their most text heavy cards are pretty legible. Meanwhile I almost need a magnifying glass for some Yugioh cards. I don't understand how japanese players read their cards when the kanji has furigana above it in the effect box, it's so tiny! I actually wanna make a Superheavy Samurai deck for Berserker Soul. You can't not duro monsta cardo if your deck only has monster cards in it!

Was really hoping "But you still take the damage!" was going to show up. That line would come up so much in later Yugioh series, especially Arc-V. However, I can't think of too many cards that actually exist that would prevent a monster from being destroyed by battle or card effect but also wouldn't prevent battle or effect damage.
Well, the new Illusion type is effectively the "But you still take the damage" group of monsters, but they have come out nearly a decade after the final episode of that series.
It's likely due to DL only really watching the original series and bits of 5D's.

Another thing about the Weevil beatdown is that it got huge in Japan due to the fad of Niconico Douga Medleys which would include a variety of musical tracks that were popular on the platform mixed together and usually accompanied by their original video sources, or sometimes even turned into entirely new songs that just happened to use the medley as a basis.
"Fang of Critias", the track that plays during the scene, was one of the more common tracks to hear in these medleys and the scene was used as its accompaniment.

@@christopherb501 Technically by the cards wording Weevil could claim a victory by DQ, due to Téa's interference, as Berserker Soul (at least at the time of the episode's release and irl) said you were to carry on even if your opponent's LP hit 0 so Atem was duty bound to keep going, granted the rules irl have since changed but back then you had to keep going so by Téa interfering she stopped an action that had to happen and thus Weevil could technically claim a DQ win.

That isn't a meme. That was one very specific thing that happened in the anime, and then the game came to a point where that's almost the standard of playing the game. It didn't come from that scene, it was the natural progression of the game. And people don't LITERALLY dump half of their deck like the scene did. You're completely wrong and had to be corrected.

Here's an idea: How about ascended memes? Meaning memes that have actually been acknowledged by official Yu-Gi-Oh products, such as Mirror Force being godly in VRAINS or Duel Links having one of Tristan's Skills be "Super Strength" or there actually being a Blue-Eyes Dragon Jet card.
You could also get a fair amount from the voice actors themselves, like Yusei's actor saying Card Games on Motorcycles, or Pegasus' voice actor clowning on Snatch Steal being unbanned

Okay this is only BARELY tangentially related to YGO, but Ojama Lime being included and Rata being mentioned, I have to remind the world that Rata was actually the one behind the whole Morbius meme. One silly YGOtuber managed to make a joke that spawned an entire cultural meme that is sorta still ongoing to this day

Back in 2014/15 my local Yugioh community had a facebook page where people traded and sold cards. One day a new member tried to sell his common Mirror Force Trap Cards for an obscenely high cost. At the time Mirror Force was still played, but was no longer a staple and had received multiple reprints so the going price was only a few cents. Other people on the facebook page tried to tell him he wouldn't be able to sell the cards for so much but instead of taking their advice he argued with them, trying to convince them of how powerful the card was. What made it extra funny is that every time he mentioned the card, he referred to it by the full phrase "Mirror Force Trap Card." This became something of a local meme to the point that if anyone activated the card or spoke about it, they all called it "Mirror Force Trap Card."
Kudos to the editor this episode, and I didn't see number 4 coming at all. DuelLogs really upping their game in these recent videos.
The Kalut meme had the perfect conclusion too, where Cimo drops triple Kalut in the finale of season 1.
As a Weather Painter player my group has the meme "This WP went for milk" is used when I activate a WP effect in response to target removal, since it banishes for cost. Also against the solfachord player we have "Normal Cutia, tale as old as time" just a variation in Normal summon aleister since Solfas can't pend summon Cutia.
I think it's less that YGO-players don't read, and more like Kaiba says in YGOTAS, that the rules are so complex that nobody can figure out how to actually PLAY Duel Monsters.

Back when I was a kid during Yugioh's early days, I loved the cards and game, BUT because I was (and still a) legally blind, I would need my mom to read me the cards. She even spent tie helping with an Excel document to write down all the descriptions for hte ones I had.

Think of it as like a god changing the earth they step foot on to suit their own needs. And lastly I put in a built in “Infinite cards”.

THERE, some of it is the same with obelisk, but I’ll also give Slifer and Ra Obelisk’s immunity to being targeted for effects, and I augmented Slifer’s ATK decrease to A: work of DEF too, and B: make it so if either the ATK/DEF of a monster *IS* just 0 at the end, rather then have to be reduced to 0 by the effect, meaning that Slifer automatically pops monsters with 0 ATK OR DEF (meaning it’s the bane of monsters with 0 original ATK _or_ DEF, like Relinquished, Rocket Arrow Express, Super Vehicroid - Mobile Base… regardless of how high the other stat is.) I also amended it’s ATK/DEF gain to work with BOTH player’s hands. Something that would make “Maxx-“C”” challenge’s more spicy.
And Ra:

THERE, some shared effects between Ra, Slifer and Obelisk, and some adjustments to existing effects, BUT I also put in a brand new one where _any change_ in your opponent’s LP, be it an increase or decrease, is feed directly to YOUR LP after Ra drains your own LP.
Another reason why Berserker Soul is so memorable is because it's one of the more notable cases of the original Duel Monsters run of the anime actually emulating the real card game fairly accurately. Not in the way the specific cards work - as established in the video, Berserker Soul doesn't work this way in the real game - but on a conceptual level, setting up a BS OTK combo through a combination of various card interactions (Breaker dropping down to "1500" ATK by using its own effect earlier in the duel) and a bit of luck. It's a -believable- interaction for people who actually play the game.
The one other scene that comes close in my mind is the Slifer Revival Jam scene.
Regarding Berserker Soul in the real game, it's my understanding it did actually used to work like it did in the anime in that you just kept drawing cards after the opponent's already dead, based on its wording. It was a ruling change that made it so the game immediately ended after dealing the final amount of LP damage necessary.
One meme I absolutely love is "The Heart of The Cards" though Yu Gi Oh was my first card game and my favorite I do still play a lot of other card games with friends. So I love always being able to make a "Hear of The Cards" joke whenever possible

I actually used berserker soul as a card in Super Heavy Samurai. People will sidedeck any Spell Negation out their deck in game 2 because they know as SHS you dont use spells or traps. Making Berserker Soul an excellent side deck option for game 2 :P

The whole World Legacy archetype is somewhat of a meme because "LORE".
Sky Striker was somewhat of a short-lived meme since so many had Raye as their waifu, but then it was revealed in some manga that she was supposed to be 13 or something, so people had an existential crisis.
The Traptrix archetype is also a meme by itself because of featuring little girls who lure people into traps to have them devoured.

The whole meme with Mirror Force and Battle Traps in specific got a lot more funny due to later anime scenarios as well
Shark in Zexal was set up to "cheat" when he accidentally saw the one of the cards his opponents deck contained, which was a Mirror Force
Then Revolver in VRains was set out to have a "powerful card", and during one of the first duels Revolver participated in on screen, upon facing a bunch of monsters with almost nothing on the field, he goes into this absolutely fabulous dance and tell his opponent to "Fall into the bottomless abyss of despair" while activating Mirror Force, he then proceeded to use a ton of battle traps throughout VRains.
Then in duel links, one of Revolvers skill would be to add one of the trap cards instead of drawing at the start of the turn, called "Might of Hanoi"
Effectively making a lot of players in OCG referring to all Battletraps and some other trap cards as "Might of Hanoi"

Along with "you just activated my trap card", I woul also add the iconic "I set X cards face down and end my turn"
The funny thing is, old school Yugioh players complain that cards like Endymion are too complicated, have too much text and that cards in old Yugioh were better.
Yet Endymion’s effects are quite simple and are clearly explained on the card while an old card like Last Turn literally has a 14 page document dedicated to explaining how it works.
Not to mention that old card text was often quite vague and at times confusingly written, even for simple effects. Not to mention how the old Polymerization basically told you _nothing_ about how fusion works and you had to look up the rulebook to know what that card even _did._
The "damage step Kalut" meme was even funnier in the season 1 finale when Cimo killed Gage with "TRIPLE KALUT, MOTHERFUCKER!"
Evenly and Mirror Force are why I have trust issues. I played Branded a couple months back and my opponent had a set card, I had game on board but no way to destroy or negate the effect, I didn’t have opening in my grave either. So instead of attacking I just passed, growing up I’ve been hit with so many mirror force I guess it’s just my knee jerk reaction when I see a face down.
Long story short it was Jar of Avarice. Still won on the next turn but yeah.

It's funny how Roger Slifer worked as an associate screenwriter for Transformers 1986 and co-created Lobo the Bounty Hunter for DC Comics yet his name is forever memorialized as a God card.

Back in the day we had an inside joke about Solemn Judgment. Every time it was used we would yell MOSES!!! IDK why. It just caught on.
Mirror Force has become a meme for another reason too, which is the Vrains anime.
Basically, the anime built up the mysterious, powerful card in Revolver's possession supposed to make the opponent shake in fear, which was revealed to be... Mirror Force. Which got a mixed reaction for being at the same time a well-loved trap card that functioned well and had some anti-link synergy, and an underwhelming reveal.
Speaking of the anime, another big meme from there is "but you still take the damage". This was a stock phrase for the anime from the beginning, as it was gleefully reminded to duelist who found a way to prevent monsters from destruction but not stop the attack, but became really infamous with Arc V, who abused it to no end. It became so bad that Vrains had Lightning subvert it entirely, continuously sacrificing resources to avoid taking damage. The usage of the phrase has gone down a bit after that, but it's still there.
There's a good chance that even someone who isn't familiar with Yugioh will have heard of the meme, because of how ingrained into pop culture it is. One of Zer0's lines in The Borderlands is even "How hilarious, you just set off my trap card"

Me when Secrets of Eternity was released in January 2015. This set introduced the Infernoids, a series of monsters that can Special Summon themselves to the field by banishing other Infernoids from either the hand or graveyard. Notable cards in set include Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Qliphort Monolith, Uni-Zombie, Nephe Shaddoll Fusion, and a card that would bolster Satellarknight to combat the Burning Abyss Shaddoll meta, Stellarknight Constellar Diamond. In this series, both Nyhmnim and myself will be opening 24 booster packs or 1 box of a core Yu-Gi-Oh! booster set. We will build a deck and play a best 2 out of 3, and the winner will receive a small prize to upgrade their deck. HOWEVER! Each episode, we will open another box of the next set that was released moving in chronological order, constantly upgrading our decks before dueling each other at the end of each episode. This is the Yu-Gi-Oh! Progression Series.

I feel like at this point the Egyptian Gods should just have their missing manga/anime protection attached to their attribute. Only they have Divine-Beast as a type after all, and Konami isn’t exactly against changing things up in the rule book. Give it a few restriction on attribute cards and it could easily make up for the missing power without a bunch of text.
yeah only god that have that kind of power is Ra aka the chicken but it still doesn't quite get the power that anime/manga have while Obelisk and Slifer/Osiris got left behind

I feel like with Endymion and Nirvana High Paladin they wouldn't be so bad if Yugioh cards weren't smaller than other card games. Magic cards are only a little bigger but even their most text heavy cards are pretty legible. Meanwhile I almost need a magnifying glass for some Yugioh cards. I don't understand how japanese players read their cards when the kanji has furigana above it in the effect box, it's so tiny!
